    Perhaps the most important lesson in Testament is that even if you DO hypothetically live in the mythical 'middle of nowhere' as described in The Day After, you're not going to get away from nuclear war free of consequence.
    Once the sky starts raining radioactive pieces of the nearest strategic target, nothing's going to save you from the dire circumstances that follow.

      Indeed. To quote John Lithgow in The Day After, "There's no 'nowhere' anymore." ... though I hesitated to quote The Day After because really, Testament is the superior film in most meaningful ways, especially writing and acting. TDA is better known and certainly very grand and important and historic, but Testament is simply more effective, affecting, just a BETTER film... and on a fraction of a fraction of TDA's budget! :)

      The people in the movie were pretty ill prepared for being at the height of the cold war. No shelter in the whole town. No food storage. Not even the common sense logic of keeping windows and doors closed and not letting the kids play outside.

    I read the story before seeing the movie ... unlike most story-to-movie efforts, this one did a great job of adapting the story to the small screen.

    In my opinion Testament is more powerful than both Threads and The Day After. While certainly not as viscerally graphic, it is by far the most emotionally grueling. And one could argue that the slow death of children via radiation poisoning is as difficult to watch as the medieval post-apocalypse landscape of Threads. The screenplay and acting are simply extraordinary and it is unfortunate that this incredible film often receives less attention than Threads or The Day After. A truly brilliant and crushing film...

      Well, one scene in Testament is, quite literally, _viscerally_ graphic. But it's all the graphic content and all of the 'agony of the symptoms' theme the movie needs. The scene totally goes in line with the movie's general spirit of emphasizing the emotionally heartwrenching character of the general situation. I agree with most reviewers here. The movie is brilliant in this approach and doesn't really need the medical horrors emphasized, once is enough.

    Fun fact: The film was originally shot as a made-for-TV movie. Paramount executives were so impressed with it that they released it in theaters as a feature. The cast sued the producers for higher pay, claiming they were paid television salaries and not feature film salaries. The case was settled out of court.

    Really excellent film. You can tell from the first few minutes that the writing, acting and direction are all of a really high standard.
    Unlike The Day After, the characters all feel like real people and we are given just enough time to get to know them before the bomb drops.

    I don't know if any movies about a nuclear attack will hit the heart as this will. I grew up in the 60's. As kids, we were trained to duck under the desk, with our backs to the windows. As I understand it, Testament was meant to tell a story of the human spirit to show courage in the face of horrible disaster. Although this movie is emotionally devastating, I can't recommended it more.

    Not sure if anyone mentions this, but you forgot the scene where Mrs. Weatherly puts the answering machine tape in the portable cassette player, and hears the rest of her husband's messages...hinting at the fact that something seems to be happening in S.F. You also forget the heartbreaking conversation Mrs. Weatherly has with her daughter about love, physical and otherwise. They both realize Mary Elizabeth may not live to be a mom herself.

    • @mysteriumvitae5338

      In my personal fannon as to the conversation about love, Mary Elizabeth is probably already starting feeling queasy. Like at the very beginning of a tummy flu, you know. Except that a 'tummy flu' set of symtoms is the first stage of radiation sickness, too.

    Good review. "Testament" is one of the most powerfully moving films I've ever seen. It left me depressed for several days (Scottie's death scene got to me in particular). After saying this, you wouldn't think I would recommend "Testament," but I absolutely consider it a must-see. In the last few years, we've come closer to global war than we have been since the Cuban Missile Crisis; people need to be reminded of what we risk with nuclear war (especially those born and raised after the end of the Cold War, for whom the threat of nuclear war may seem to belong to another era). It behooves us to do everything we can to prevent the nightmare this film depicts from ever becoming reality. Watch it. Show it to others. Wake people up to the potentially horrific consequences of political brinksmanship.

      +phoenix1861 - I really can't add much to what you have said about the movie. It was a time when Ronald Reagan was fighting with the Russians. Thankfully, it was Gorbachev, and not Putin. So, at the time, there were several movies about nuclear war. Testament, The Day After, Threads from the BBC. Testament however remains the best. It is so painful to watch. When you feel that, you know that you are seeing something special. I'm lucky to have the DVD of this. Yet, It's not something I can bear to watch too often. Now, with North Korea, Putin, and the White House - we unfortunately seem to be going back in time. Best wishes, Ted

I found this site: www.acapela-group.com and noticed that if you select English (UK) on the demo, and then select Peter, it is the exact same old voice. I understand that you've changed voices in whatever program you use, and I'm not sure if you can purchase a full program from the site including this voice, but I just wanted to let you know that the old voice is still on the Internet if you look for it enough.

    David, I get the sense that Carol and the two boys actually live on past the end of the film. John Sacret Young, the screenwriter, is famous for his strong female roles. A slow and painful death due to radiation poisoning is just too easy. Based on his other works and characters, Carol will continue to suffer and toil, but she will endure and come out stronger as a survivor. The ending lines hint to me that they go on. What do you think?

    • @Truthseeker-4110
      @Truthseeker-4110 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe that she will survive for a more lengthy period of time than her children will, but invariably I feel that Carol will eventually physically succumb to radiation poisoning. Not sure if Brad and Hiroshi will last much longer. I like the idea that she survives and becomes very strong but due to the fact she doesn’t seem to have any desire to leave Hamelin, I’m not sure.

    • @mysteriumvitae5338
      @mysteriumvitae5338 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Truthseeker-4110 Well, it is quite possible that those who survived into the last scenes will survive. Radiation diminishes with time. I think if you're still healthy two months into an all-out nuclear war, the radiation around you has probably dropped enough that there will be no ARS any more. I think Carol will not succumb to ARS, which still doesn't mean she will not succumb to famine, other health problems or, for that matter - suicide.

    I will never forget this movie I saw it when it came out. I was terrified. It was poignant and scary. The actors were exceptional. Rozanne was great she carried it off. Great experience for Lucas too. This movie is one of several that defined the 80s it made the 80s about caring and getting the bigger picture, Reagan-esque type thinking. This movie along with The Day After were pivotal and very emotional it helped us avoid nuclear war. I'm afraid again this time we might be save again, Iran going through pangs we have a conservative President, we might get it right this time and oust the mullahs. And the illegals here, we may survive it isn't always threat's from outside. If we allow this invasion we are lost no longer an independent nation, do you people get it? Testament, the movie where the world's dumbest town, knowing apparently nothing about fallout or shielding, dies from sheer, utter ignorance. 2-3 weeks in a decent shelter could have saved most or all of the town, but they just kept living their NORCAL suburban existence as if nothing happened and so most die. Even impromptu structures built inside homes out of available materials could have provided 50% shielding and probably kept most alive save for the very young, sick, and elderly.
    But no, because this wasn't entertainment, it was political messaging, and the political message was that Reagan's very necessary and proper defense re-building after years of neglect was too dangerous to countenance. Better to just give up. This movie was also partially financed by a group later revealed to have received funds from the KGB for the express purpose of dezinformatsiya. . Notice how all this huge plethora of movies suddenly vanished after 1984 (no reelection to oppose).

    • @The_Fat_Controller.
      @The_Fat_Controller. 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, it was political messaging. Just like _The Day After_ and _Threads_ and _Wargames._ Reagan BAD! Just like today's Orange Man Bad.
      And you are right about Hamelin being the world's dumbest town. NOBODY in that whole community knew jack shit about nuclear war or fallout or radiation hazards. Were there not any military veterans living there who received Nuclear/Biological/Chemical warfare training while in the service? Nobody there with Civil Defense training? The police chief was utterly clueless. The town doctor could only provide a basic explanation of what to expect with radiation exposure. They lived close to San Francisco, and didn't have a clue about fallout potential? San Francisco has a major port, had a significant Navy presence at the time, airports capable of handling B-52 bombers, industry, highway and railroad transportation. How far do you have to bury your head in the sand to fail to realize you are living close to a major bullseye? I knew more about the effects of nuclear war as a teenager at the time than any adult in that whole movie. _Testament_ is a gripping and powerful movie about nuclear war, but ignorance was a leading factor in most of the deaths that occurred so quickly after the attack.
