  • Testament (1983 film)
Testament is a 1983 drama film based on a three page story titled, "The Last Testament" by Carol Amen (1934-1987), directed by Lynne Littman and written by John Sacret Young. The film tells the story of how one small suburban town near the San Francisco Bay Area slowly falls apart after a nuclear war destroys outside civilization.
Originally produced for the PBS series American Playhouse, it was given a theatrical release instead by Paramount Pictures (although PBS did subsequently air it a year later). The cast includes Jane Alexander, William Devane, Leon Ames, Lukas Haas, Roxana Zal and, in small roles shortly before a rise in their stardom, Kevin Costner and Rebecca De Mornay. Alexander was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance.

One of the BEST films I've seen. Phenomenal cast. I'll NEVER forget it. Two words...JANE ALEXANDER!

This film is one of the greatest statements again (nuclear) war. No flashy action scenes or special effects. Just the life of an ordinary family shattered by an event they did not even see. Haunting, depressing and beautiful.
I was born in 1970 so the people in this film, the time it took place in are very familiar to me.
As said by many others, this gem makes Day after tomorrow look like a second rate action flick. Only 'threads' is on it's level but that has a more documentary feel to it

This was one of the few movies I literally had to turn off because I was too emotional, Lukas reminded me too much of my son and I was shaking. I went back and watch the remainder weeks later and glad I did.

I never understood why this film isn't as well known as the other nuclear war dramas from the 80s....I wish it had a blu ray release so more people could see and appreciate it

Great minidoc. I revisit it every so often. I think it's neat how near the end the writer talks about how he would have written it very differently (and perhaps not been capable of writing it at all) if he hadn't had children then, because it's also true for us -- the viewer could say the same thing. I mean, the way I reacted to this movie when I first saw it as a teenager in '83 -- as much as it destroyed me -- was very different than how I reacted seeing it again decades later having children of my own. It becomes even more devastating, on a deeper level, than it could have possibly evoked before I had children. Obviously, one doesn't need to have children to be demolished by this incredible film, but if you DO have kids in your life, you know what I mean. I've only seen it three times in my life and I may never see it again, because it's not a comfortable experience. It's important, and worthy, and everyone needs some kind of cathartic, evocative shake-up in a safe way (movies, books, etc.) at times... but this one takes a heavier toll on parents, and I don't 'enjoy' it the way I 'enjoy' watching other nuclear-related films.

Fun fact: The film was originally shot as a made-for-TV movie. Paramount executives were so impressed with it that they released it in theaters as a feature. The cast sued the producers for higher pay, claiming they were paid television salaries and not feature film salaries. The case was settled out of court.

I disagree. They are apples and kumquats. TESTAMENT was a brilliantly done, way above average piece, but, this film was done on a shoestring budget. THE DAY AFTER, had a MONSTER budget, acted by people who received huge salaries. You have to compare apples to apples.

@@dr.h.e.sawyerjr.9984 I have to compare QUALITY to QUALITY. Testament knocked me on my ass in a way few films have, and I was in a depressed daze for days.
It's an absolute masterpiece. The Day After is an above average TV Movie.

This film is beautiful and devastating. It's efficient but speaks volumes. I found an incredible amount of nostalgia in all of the little details of life in 1983. While I appreciate the storytelling and the independent spirit of the production, it does, in fact, depict my worst nightmare as a parent.

Wow, thanks for uploading this. I remember this movie came on tv when I was a kid and it terrified me. I recently re watched it, and it broke my heart. So much talent in all the actors. Especially interesting to hear the kids remembering their experiences with the movie. I'd wondered if little Lukas was aware of what nuclear war meant at the time of filming - sounds like he was very much aware. And Roxanna and Ross talking about the scenes that meant the most to them was fascinating.

This movie didn’t focus on the explosions itself or why it happened but the aftermath of it and how it slowly killed people from the fall out. Very sad and tragic yet very moving film. Jane Alexander got a well deserved Oscar nomination and it’s Lucas Haas first film but most people saw him first in Witness with Harrison Ford. And of course a unknown actor at the time a very young Kevin Costner.

Thank you for this post. A film that was so impactful, so real. Especially knowing what happened in Japan with 2 nuclear bombs killing many, many people/families and for generations to come. The Japanese lived this in their real lives.
More stories need to be told about what will happen when governments do the unthinkable.
This film gives just a peek of what would happen to people/families and has happened outside of the U.S.
We all need to think about this and think hard about what would happen if governments go down this losing path for all of humanity.

Very Powerful film. Even more applicable today, as the threat of Nuclear War has never been so relevant. My Company just released use of Nuclear Radiation drugs, SAIC knows better than most. However, Nuclear War is not survivable, regardless of preparation nor complacency, simply put.. you die.. That is what this film conveys..
