I have an 1894 blued marlin in 44 magnum with a 20 inch barrel that was made by marlin itself and is stamped JM. I purchased it new in the UK in 2007. When I bought it, before firing and as a precaution to what I had read, I had it sent off to a gun company in the UK (called South Yorkshire shooting) who specialised in tuning marlin lever action rifles. As well as tuning the rifle by refitting, smoothing and polishing internal parts, they also fitted it with a trigger kit. This got rid of the floppy trigger and reduced the trigger pull weight. The tuning was done to smooth out and remedy any cycling issues so that the rifle was then very easy to cycle and operate and was far better than a new rifle fresh off the production line.
The company that carried out the work, who also sold new marlins, stated that it was common even then to have cycling issues with brand new marlin lever action rifles. This was a few years before any involvement with Remington.
Many thanks for producing the above video and the research that you have put in to clarify the date of manufacture of marlin rifles.

Thanks for your comment. In reality, the Marlin company as we fondly remember it ceased to exist in the early 2000s when when the Freedom group bought them out. Then, even that Remington run Marlin company disappeared when the Freedom group had to liquidate everything. So the truth is, If it were not for Ruger buying the Marlin name along with all of their assets and intellectual property, we would have no more Marlin Firearms ever. That said, I'm really thankful for Ruger, and they are doing a bang-up job with the new Marlins.

Reputation and respect is difficult to earn and easy to lose if you're not careful. We were all hopeful that Cerberus would be successful and most of us lost something. H&R alone was a loss to budget shooters and new shooters. I gave a few single shot shotguns away for gifts. Getting back to reputation. Remlin really became a slur in shooting circles.
When Ruger purchased Marlin, some tried to call it Ruglin, but it never stuck. Ruger's reputation was so good people were willing to wait and see. Most of us want there to be a Marlin and a Ruger. The only negative I've heard is price. Given Ruger's willingness to offer something to everyone, I expect there will be a Marlin for most budgets.
You cleared up a lot on the serial number topic.

    • @TargetSuite
      @TargetSuite  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Great comment! Thanks! There has been a lot of banter about the price of the new Marlins, but my store here north of Houston is selling them for around $1,100. That's just a few dollars more than Henry big boy. So I think once the new wears off the price everybody sees will be well below MSRP. By the way I sure miss the Handi Rifle. By the time I figured out how great they were they're no longer available.

I totally agree with what you said about TH-cam and their totally BS Bots and Algorithms. I have a very small startup channel and I post what is a pretty good video and it only gets 17 views in 14 days while an old man in North Dakota posts a video of himself driving down a country road in a road grader and it gets 590 views the first hour. It doesn’t take much to realize there is something very wrong at work here. Oh well thanks for the good video.

Do you have a new channel, you have to be patient. It does take the algorithm sometimes a year to really figure out who your audience is. That's why they say he's a TH-cam channel is not a Sprint but a marathon. I got the same results you did when I was first starting out.

Before I launched my channel in 2019 I watched hours upon hours of videos on how to have a successful TH-cam channel. One thing I learned . . . success on TH-cam depends on doing things in a way that pushes the right buttons in their artificial intelligence, aka, the algorithm.

You have a serious problem that I picked up at the beginning of this video. I feel I should help you out of the serious situation you are faced with. What makes us in the firearms community so dang good is our willingness to help others.
Therefore you need to box up the model 39 and I when it is received do swear to store it with other members of Marlins family in one of my safes..
I know it will be hard to say goodbye but if you truly love something then you should set it free.
And you are welcome in advance.
Haha! Seriously though you have some good looking Marlins there.
As for the Remlins. You actually have that right 100%. It was within the last 3 years that Remington finally got the rifles out the door with no issues.
As for Ruger. Their Marlins have been superb since their release. Sticks are fitted properly , metal is finished properly and they took their time and got these as close to perfection as they could. Now they have had a few issues arise with some of their bolts. But they seem to have fixed that issue quickly.
I believe Marlin to be in very capable hands.

I chose a late 2009 1894 for the Ballard rifling. There were some gold triggers available then for around $500, but I wanted to avoid the Microgroove.
The fit was very fine, but finish of the internals required filing and stoning using a jewelers loupe to get rid of tooling marks and scratches.
I also upgraded the trigger to the non-floppy Wild West model.
Very fine rifle . . . one of the issues the late New Haven JM models had were a reduction in hand-finishing and their tooling was wearing out.
This added to the problems Remington had moving to Ilion, and explains poor quality as they were converting production to CNC. CZ also had the same issues with Dan Wesson's . . . trying to make CNC from worn original tooling specs.

Thankks so much. I just bought a 336W that was a safe queen and doesnt have a scratch on the wood. I believe Beechwood ? It has CM on the barrel so i believe it was made in April 2018 so i believe thats a good year for a Remlin 336W . I paid 327 for it at a pawn shop. If i hadnt someone else would have snatched it up. Too clean and pristine to shoot. Lol. Ammo is priceier than 3 years so we better stock up. Thanks again. Hello from Lubbock Texas. Deer and Hogs all over the state.

I have a Marlin 25M 22 magnum made in 1986 (14XXXXXX) bought new when I was in high school. Oh the stories that gun could tell. I had a 336 in 35Rem but traded it for a S&W 1500 in 7mm Mag because I was getting stationed up in Alaska. Come to think of it, may have been a Mossberg 1500, either way it was a Howa re-brand. Man that gun would shoot, took a Dall from 500yds and a few Caribou too. Thank you, sir, for the trip down memory lane.

My Dad had three hunting rifles A big 300 Magnum a gun he was very fond of. we new he had purchased that gun new because it was a Weatherby Action a pretty Blonde Stock and Seiko Scope #One brother has in his possession, 42He had a 306 that my brother Hunts with .I have the 30-30 Marlin and I have wanted to figure out its age...my serial number begins with "F" so now I know it was manufactured in New Haven in 1949 thank and I watched you till the end

My most recent model 336 is easy...100 year anniversary, built in 1970 chambered in .30 30
I just picked it up earlier this year and it was in unfired condition...i have only put 40 rounds through it...It was a bit stiff after sitting in a collection for 52 years...but a light coat of oil and working the action while watching TV has smoothed her out nicely!
My Serial # begins with a 70 738**...growing up I have always owned Marlin Lever guns...but i really like the Winchester 94...just because its so dang handy a rifle to carry through these mountains and river bottoms...thanks for another great video!...MTwoods

Really enjoyed the video friend. Very informative. I see that my daddys 35 rem marlin was made in 1979. When he gave it to me we could not hit a 5gal bucket at 50 yrds. Im pretty decent marksman an missed it about 4ft to the left so I had all my gun friends even a wva trooper check it out an couldn't find a reason for it to be off that far so I set it in the corner for a month and one morning having my coffee i look down the barrel and notice the front sight was off to the right side. IT was a WOW MOMENT so I called Marlin and they said send it to us an we will repair it at no cost so I packed it up and time rolled around and it was the following year deer season so I had no other deer rifle so I put a scope on it and its been that way for 44 years. Killed a few deer with it. Great deer rifle. Thats very odd isn't it. I enjoy your videos alot. Im going on 71 years old.

I say 1924 because that’s the closest date I could find information on. I believe I had (family gun, swaps hands, everyone wants it) a 1924 Marlin Model in 30-30. Serial number 568. It has several “568” roll marks I believe in ALL of the locations you mentioned including the bottom of the receiver. When you take the stock off, it’s also stamped “568” in ink on an inside face. The for-end is also ink stamped “568”. The only thing not original is that somewhere along the way (before my 35 years started) someone did drill and tap the receiver for a weaver rail. I really wish one of my ancestors hadn’t done that but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to appreciate that aspect because all that means is that this rifle has been used for almost a century by MY family. It’s still a fine shooter too. I miss it dearly and one day I will have it back.

I've got a Marlin Model 97. The predecessor to the 39 and 39A.
They did not keep records for those particular years. Nearest I can get is within a decade and compare serial with other examples. It's about a 1912.
It's had it's bore sleeved and stock refinished.
    The case hardening is faint.
But I love it and it shoots great.
24" barrel; you almost don't need ear pro.
    Something about an old gun.

I know exactly how old mine Marlin 39a is. I bought it in 1966 from a gun shop in Los Angeles, and it was brand new then. So the serial number has to be right around 1966, maybe a year or two older then that. But real close.

Nice video. I'm a Marlin collector of sorts, since I primarily buy "shooters" and not necessarily collector condition guns. Just an FYI, Remington bought Marlin in 2008 and the manufacturing problems started immediately. One of the worst debacles was with the 308MX line. Many receivers had barrel threading that was not square with the receiver, which resulted in what was called "barrel droop" and 2009 was the year. I own a 2007 308MXLR and was just about to buy a 2009 308MX when I had the seller check for barrel droop and, sure enough, the barrel was low & offline by about a 1/4", which basically destroyed the value of the gun. I'm in Houston quite often with a son who is a Houston firefighter and my father-in-law is there, a Rice professor and Christian who has taught an adult class at his church for 50 years. God bless and keep making the levergun videos.

Thanks George, I appreciate the information but I will have to wait for further info., but I am pretty sure I have all of the stuff I need to date and identify the Marlin Safety rifle I have in 38/40 caliber. I believe you would enjoy taking this old rifle around the block for a few shots. If you are interested I might be convinced to furnish the rifle and ammo for you to feature it on one of your videos. The old carbine is a wonderful, old gun that will surely surprise people when they actually get to shoot it. It is a simple buckhorn rear sight with a fine blade front sight that is truly a real fine pin point top of the blade shooter. It started out as a centerfire black powder cartridge but when smokeless started the rifle had no problem going to smokeless powder because of the robust design. I always shoot smokeless in it but always use premium ammunition, factory made. It was my Grandfathers gun that was my Father's gun, then it became mine. I have quite a few handloads that my Dad and I reloaded, but I don't really like to shoot much of it because he liked to load em up pretty hot. I keep them, and they shoot great but I am trying to take better care of the rifle and so just factory safe loads for the old girl now. Let me know what you think, I don't live that far from you, so we will see.

Great video. Nice to see the XLR model in this. I have one in 30-30 but I got it cerakoted black. Just too shiny for me in the Alberta foothills. I did have a 308 ME blued/wood model in 2007 or so and shouldn’t have sold it. Always wondered what happened to the 338 ME? Since 2002 I’ve had 3 30-30s, one 35 Rem, one 444, one 45-70 and one 39A and four model 60s. Some good a couple not so good.

Thanks for your comment Larry. Most information I could find on the 338ME just said it wasn't popular and was dumped. But I can't imagine Hornady got involved in a project without doing their homework. I suspect with what was happening at the "new" Marlin there just wasn't corporate support to promote that cartridge. Nice guns, by the way.
