Everything sounds awesome! Love the sounds of this new duramax... however one thing bugs me... why only a 9k lbs tow capacity? What’s the limiting factor leading to the semi low towing capacity? I would like to see numbers around 10,500 or better... I like to have the reserve towing capacity.
I need to talk to this guy! I'm discussed with some of GM's chincy decisions in the interior of the newer Chevy trucks since 2014.
Good fuel economy, but chincy switch, knobs , button's and the seats in my 14 SUCK!!!!
And the turbo in the L5p is under sized!! Nice Chevy engineer's!!!
Just towed an 8,000lb boat from Lake Charles to Birmingham with my 2020 3.0L diesel, Denali crew 4x4, high wind, storming/raining averaged 15 mpg over 550 miles at about 68 mph. Towed amazingly well. Does consume more DEF during heavy towing. Super QUIET, wife even said its quieter than my old 6.2L. Overall for 1/2 ton and comfort of Denali, outstanding A+. If you ever drive one of these 3.0L duramax you’ll be convinced and will never go back to gas. This is the power of the 3/4 ton pickup 10 years ago with the quiet and comfort of a 1/2 ton.
I hope GM puts the I-6 in the Tahoe/Suburban as an engine option. 30 to 32 mpg highway in the Tahoe with the 10 speed transmission sounds great to me. Road trip!!

Yes I hope they add it to the Tahoe’s and suburban the 5.3 is not good on Gas at all I’m getting 14.0 mpg Going about 75 to 80 mpg with out a load that’s horrible... I traveled from San Antonio TX to San Jose Ca and spent Crazy amount of money in this travel ; and I’m a big GMC Enthusiast....
That would be a perfect fit.
As it would be awesome it would steal sales away from the trucks they make more money off of them compared to the SUVs
@@Steve-pc6cb, but imagine you have a big family and you bring alot of gear with you and do lots of miles. A Suburban or Yukon XL with the 3.0L diesel would be a great car.
I have a 2021 AT4 with a 3.0. I towed my 20’ Triton bass boat 240 miles, averaging 65 MPH in some pretty hilly terrain and averaged 17.5 MPG. The most impressive to me was how effortless the 3.0/10 speed combination towed my boat. Way way better than the 5.7 Tundra TRD 11 MPG at 60 mph that I traded in.
A month ago I traded in my 2018 Sierra 5.3 gas for a 2021 GMC Evolution with the 3.L Duramax i wasn.t sure about a diesel , but I drive about 40,000 km a year and am light a very light duty driver ..Overall I like the truck ,
Friday towed a U-haul trailer with 2585 kgs (5,700lbs)...
I was stunned i was loaded getting 12.2 L / per 100 k ~ 19.8 MPG ... Few hills, light traffic, no passing, it was a nice steady drive ... a tad slower off the line ... but I barely knew i was pulling a load ,,,,
WOW !! no strain, no engine screaming , no dropping gears to help ..... i'm sold on a diesel 3L Duramax ya got me sold .

I’m a ford guy and not in the market for a 1/2 ton diesel. I know you did a short loop but that’s amazing to get 15.2 pulling an 8000 pond box. Plus the engineer with you got 19 on a long trip pulling a 4000lb trailer. That’s the type of efficiency that will get people in this market to take a serious look
It's a dont buy has a belt driven oil pump that you got to drop the trans to get to your looking at 2k in labor if the oil pump dont kill the engine

I have this 2020 GMC Sierra Z31 4x4 with the Duramax 3.0. Just anecdotal experience here - I got 27 MPG while towing a u-haul motorcycle trailer with my Triumph on it over 120 miles. I know that's light, maybe 2000 pounds tops, but it sure is great mileage. Absolutely love this truck.
First time diesel owner here. Loving my 2023 Sierra with the 3.0. Came for the thought of commuting comfortably in a truck and getting 20+ mpg. Staying for the fun factor. Love driving it.
I'm glad he discusses the importance of aerodynamics and wind on mpg. These factors are usually not addressed. We stick larger tires and lift kits on these trucks and then lament that they don't get the mpg advertised. In North Dakota here, the wind blows 10+ mph daily. Often 20+ mph. The way I see it, you have a 1 in 4 chance of having some element of tail wind. In every pickup I have owned, every semi I have driven, especially when towing, wind, or lack thereof can make as much as a 50% impact on mpg. I know that seem like a large number. But, if I am pulling a loaded enclosed trailer at say 6000lbs with any sort of tail wind, I may get 13 mpg with my 2006 Dodge Cummins. With a 30 mph head wind or cross wind, I may get 8 mpg. Of course the driving speed, with or without a trailer, with or without any wind makes a huge difference as well. Especially much above 60ish mph.
I completely understand. I drive a lot in Wyoming, Nebraska and South Dakota. That kind of wind impacts every vehicle.
What the heck some of us love the sounds of the turbo and the sweet music an in line six makes so come on after market let’s see the real potential of this sweet little six

Well I'm sold. I was already planning on getting the new AT4 with the 6.2 but now I'm thinking diesel. I drive a lot for work and fuel economy is very important. Now all they need to do is offer this in the new yukon/tahoe/suburban. I have a 2017 Denali and it got almost 26 mpg on a flat highway. That was according to the computer but it's usually pretty accurate when I manually check it.
I bought a Colorado with the 2.8 Duramax and I love it. If it wasn’t for the diesel motor I wouldn’t have bought the Colorado

Just bought the Silverado RST Z71 version and never enjoyed a vehicle as much as this one, love the 3.0.
Just wait until the belt breaks on the belt driven oil pump fails and then lock the motor up or timing chains get slack and have to remove the transmission to replace them

@@Remo850 I don't have one however I was making a comment on that stupid design, but what was wrong with having a crankshaft driven oil pump like the LS and the duramax engines, manufacturers are just making unreliable engines this days just for profit and not reliability 😡
Awesome the new duramax are insane. I have a 2.5 canyon duramax and it’s amazing. Everyday driving is over 40 mpg. Yes over 40. And it can tow 7800 lbs. it is a tough little truck. GM IS KNOCKING IT OUT OF THE PARK....

I’m hoping to do that in October during the Texas Truck Rodeo I go to. Not sure if Ford will bring their diesel though. Pretty sure Ram will be there. Chevy/GMC is strong maybe. If not there, then sometime soon.

I had a 1982 Chevy 6.2L 1/2 ton pick up that got 32mpg on the hwy and hauled Hog in a 4 horse horse trailer and would get 18mpg. Wish I still had that old pick up.

I would love a show down between the 2.7l 3.0l vs 5.3l vs 6.2l. mpg, mpg towing, 0-60, 0-60 towing, exhaust and off road testing.
I will tell you the results now. The 2.7L turbo gasser would be faster from 0-60 then the 3.0L diesel but slower than the 5.3L and 6.2L. Towing 0-60 would go like this from first to last place. 6.2L, 3.0L, 5.3L, 2.7L
Fuel economy. From best to worst. 3.0L 2.7L 5.3L 6.2L
Exhaust notes? Easy. They all sound like shit stock.
Off road. They will do ok. They are not jeeps. These are just predictions. :)

My best mileage is just over 40 when nursing my 3.0 in my SLT. Love it.
I have a 2018 Ram Ecodiesel and am very pleased with the fuel economy I get in my truck, BUT I can't wait to get my hands on the 3.0 Duramax! I think it'll blow the Ecodiesel out of the water.
If I were buying a truck this would be it. Its the same price as their biggest gas engine. And the efficiency is greater than a 3.5 ecoboost, which use to be the most efficient 1/2 ton engine. Plus less frequent oil changes.

2005 5.3 L33 v8.... 4:10 gears.... I still own this workhorse with no significant expensive issues.
The L33 is a baby LS1. Great little engine.
Going down a grade in snow / ice , especially towing , you want an off switch for an exhaust brake , just like a Jacobs engine brake has .
And...conversely, not towing, in summer, going down a steep hill, one merely needs to engage the "tow/haul" switch to engage the exhaust brake ( or so i surmise ) ...

Just like Ford it’s availability started at top and trickled down I’m sure GM will follow suit to stay competitive. They did to a point with the 6.2
2.5k upcharge isn’t unreasonable over a 5.3 and is much cheaper than the other two’s upcharge.

That's really good! A friend of mine has a Ram Ecodiesel and he says he gets around 14-14.5 mpgs on the highway when towing his boat (boat + trailer is a bit over 7k lbs).

I would really love to see that 10spd end up in the midsized twins! I have the 8spd in my 18' and love it. However, having a more HD transmission would be nice and convince more folks to take the plunge as a long term investment. I like to keep my trucks till several hundred thousand miles. A good strong transmission would only help ensure it happens.

Towing my 8000lb campers with my 2016 1500 ram diesel I average 16 mpg down and back to/from florida can't weight for the new ram diesel, but GM is a close consideration.

Diesel in PA is $.20-$.50 higher than premium. All these advantages are annihilated with the costs/tax on diesels. (Great review as always.) Do a review comparison on costs versus returns.

Amazing fuel economy. I have a 7600 pound (dry) travel trailer that I’ve pulled with my 2011 Chev 6.2 gas, 2015 GMC 5.3 and my currant, 2017 Chev 6.6 Diesel. This blows them away in towing fuel economy

Just curious why did you switch from the 5.3L to the 6.6L was it struggling with towing?
Eric Fox just happened to be at the dealer one day and saw the Duramax sitting there. It was just like a Midnight Edition except for the Duratrac tires and I have chrome mirror caps. The 5.3 even with 3.73 gearing was not as good as my 6.2 with 3.42 gearing. The 5.3 was ok. I don’t think it suffered but it was by far the weakest of the 3. My 5.3 truck had a tow rating of 11000 lbs, which I think was a bit optimistic
The diesel, omg! It stays in 6th gear going up hill ( haven’t mountain hauled) it just doesn’t lose speed.
I pick up my 2020 Texas Edition 3 ltr Duramax tomorrow. Traded in my 2018 GMC gas to tow my travel trailer better. Lookong forward to better torque and fuel ecconomy

Ya know, years ago I was getting 14-15 MPG towing 7k with 1k in the bed using my '15 2500HD Duramax LML. I still get 16-18 MPG around town.
2020 ecodiesel pulling 6k camper and truck loaded getting 18 mpg, 32 hwy empty.
Rides so nice. No issues. Duramax looks good, but way to pricey compared to my ram 4x4 crew cab.
I am a former GMC owner. For me, an evaluation involves much more than mpg. My truck had a wax-coated frame, and became a rust bucket in only 5 years. The service at the local dealer was abysmal. The seats wore very quickly, causing abnormal pains in legs and spine. The brakes were too weak for tow/haul. This new truck also has a wax coated frame, similar seats, and the same dealer; and worse, it has a belt inside the engine where a chain should be. The only pro, for me, to this new truck is the exhaust brake: but it is insufficient to overcome all the negatives with GM.
How dumb was that to put a timing belt instead af a chain...And I've heard the engine has to be pulled out to change the belt

GM finally learned what Cummins has known for decades about inline 6 engines....
This is the most promising diesel ive seen yet price, mpg, & power. GMC AT4 3.0L mpg run would be cool it being lifted. Mine does get slightly worse with the V8
Impressive, but chevy has the idea that a service life of a truck is 150k to 200k. There is an oil pump belt in the engine and if it is changed, the transmission has to be pulled.
So by the time a Chevy buyer has to pull a tranny for a belt swap, ford buyers have changed out the EcoBoost engine 5 times by that milage. Seems good to me
@@BP-bb4vg Lol there are plenty of 150k plus EB motors out there. Ford torture tested them . They are good engines as long as you don't neglect maintenence at all.

Great interview. Very good information. It's amazing how fuel efficient these trucks are. That's a really big trailer for a half ton truck too, I would have expected way less mpg with the large profile of the trailer.

Great video. They hit it out of the park with this inline, but very disappointing that they're not offering it in the base work trucks like RAM is. Many will want those impressive mpg and towing #'s, but don't want or need the more expensive trims. Construction/fleets... only choice would be RAM
G Man They are offering it in lower trim levels, but you may have to go Chevy instead of GMC.

Towed about 5000lb center console boat 600 miles with a 2021 Sierra and averaged about 13mpg.
Timing chain, high pressure fuel pump and belt driven oil pump are in the back of the engine! So if any of those things have issues you have to pull the transmission. No thanks. I was looking forward to possibly trading my titan xd and getting one till I found this out.

rochab77 So you wouldn’t buy a new $50k + truck because you can’t easily access parts that won’t need service until at least 150k miles? I can’t wrap my head around that logic. If you can afford a $50k + truck you really should be able to afford getting serviced many years down the road. All new vehicles have 100s of parts you can’t service without the right equipment.

The cost of changing that oil pump belt, high pressure fuel pump or anything associated with the timing system is going to be an arm and a leg on labor. Short term, yeah I'd get one but putting that stuff on the back of the engine where you cant access it without pulling the transmission is ridiculous and just because I can afford it does t mean I should have to spend that kind of money. I cant wrap my head around that logic either. And so what if they say be pil pump belt is good for 150k, if those timing belt guide rails fail (which they do) or the high pressure fuel pump fails, before or after that's either 2 to 3 more times you have to remove the engine or you will have to choose to service all 3 at once to "save" money. No thanks.
The solution is easy, go buy a Cummins engined (gear drive) Dodge. Has gear drive, Not belt drive.
I just hope this 3.0L duramax lasts. Hopefully it wont have a bunch of issues. I already want one but I'm going to wait a few years.

My 2021 had engine pulled out under 2k miles in. After fixed transmission leaked, and long story short GM did not stand by my Warranty. Buying 350 again for hauling.

the colorado is likely to get the 2.7 gas and keep the 2.8 duramax because the colorado won't fit the 3.0. While its only .2 liters bigger, its significantly longer

Listen, I love my 5.3's - I've had a bunch of them, but this diesel is the best. I just got it so will see long term but off the lot there's really no comparison (*for my use. Your situation may be different)
you can combine a v6 and an inline 6...its called the VR6 , VW has been making them for a long time, you get the benefits of the V in the same space as the I
I like the straight six design mini cummins but a duramax label easier to work on than V6 diesels
The throttle valve that creates slight back pressure at light loads for the low press EGR hardly qualifies as an exhaust brake and this is confirmed in all the test drives going downhill.

Instead of the DOA 2.7 4T they should have made a gas variant of the 3.0T as well. They already have the experience with the Cadillac programs. Since the EB fords hang with or beat the 6.2 in acceleration before a tune I’d imagine the gas variation would make the V8s GMs cash cow look bad while sounding much better than a V6

Ram is a joke 😂😂 a friend of mine had a new eco diesel and it had so many problems he traded within a couple of weeks and got a f150 platinum. The ram wouldn't start half the time, the air ride system was faulty, and thats just 2 of the problems he was having. Also doesnt help that the cummins eco diesel is italian made.. another friend has a 1500 ram bough new in 2013. Within 6 months had to have the transmission replaced. Also had a friend with a 2500 ram, and guess what.. more problems. I could go in but i wont.. Rams are crap

Chrispy841 not even to mention all the issues i had with an 06 Tahoe that had nothing BUT faults, (water pump dying 3 months after purchase, and numerous other issues) and then the same thing w a 09 Impala with the dual climate actuators failing, AC compressor dying and fuel pump failing even before the POS was a year old lmao
I was honestly thinking of stepping away from GM, but now I'm sold. I want this pickup. That mileage is INSANE. The premium price for the AT4 is killing me right now though and the fact that we don't get the option to change the seats to the brown/tan option, not sure why that's not standard but the black leather with accents is super ugly. I'll hold out for a few years I suppose.
I traded my 03 silverado ls with a 4.8, on a 21 with the 3.0 and it is unbelievable the towing an the mileage are great. The 03 truck got about 16 mpg highway or city, the 21 i've gotten as high as 31 mpg just cruising without trailer. Pulling the trailer with the trator with loader and fotary cutter, she just goes like it isn't there, the 03 would hem and haw a little ways

Great video! Yeah, I'm sold on the new 2020 GMC trucks w/the new diesel motors. Now I've just gotta decide which model. I'm leaning toward the 1500 AT4.
Timing chain, high pressure fuel pump and belt driven oil pump are in the back of the engine! So if any of those things have issues you have to pull the transmission. No thanks. I was looking forward to getting one till I found this out.
I like the info you get but there is too much talking, not enough time showing the truck or even a walk around. Let’s see the engine up close, the dash that your looking at, etc.

Is anybody afraid to buy this new engine other than me. I have always heard never buy the first year of any vehicle. Durability needs to be proven over time.
Mike Brandenburg I think you are just a puss I had the first gen ecoboost and sold her with 511,000 km on her with the original drivetrain and now I’m rocking the first gen powerstroke with 80,000 km on her with no problems yet.
While yes, most shy away from the first year of any model year, I'd have trouble waiting myself. It really is that good. Besides, to get a real sense of durability might mean 200k miles to some people. You really going to wait a 10-12 years for a durability result? By then, there will probably be something completely different on the market.

@@Pickuptrucktalk I usually like to wait two or three years until the major bugs are worked out, if there ends up being some major bugs that need to be fixed.
Roy Giller I think one or two years is reasonable, but I’d keep my eye on incentives. The market is HOT right now and competition is fierce. This means a big win for consumers. Economy might dip next year and change everything.

There is no real audio from the engine inside the cabin. It is just that quiet.
I have the same setup and get ~10mpg with my enclosed trailer. ~18mpg with a car on a uhaul car trailer

This just might end up being one of the best engines of the day, Diesel or Gasoline! I bet GM won’t be able to build enough of them for the first couple years or so! But just imagine an InLine DuraMax Six Crate Engine Program! As good as the V6’s May turn out to be from Ford an Ram, they will never have the inherent advantages of the InLine Engine! I just hope that in 6 or so years when we are ready to get a real nice truck for our retirement, one of these Chevy DuraMax Half Tons will be a great proven engine!

Modern Kevlar reinforced belts have been successfully used for years on high torque Harley Davidson Motorcycels! That have a better service and life records than steel chains! They are lighter and smoother and take less maintenance! Just look in any Snowmobile and see the belts running the torque converter! With most lasting the life of the machine.

PhillLsx Ga. I have put many thousands of miles, hard tire shredding miles on Harley’s that have a belt, or other bikes with chains and would take a chain any day! Just go into a Harley Dealer and ask anyone what they think of belt drive, over anything else but direct drive, but even that can be more problematic, when time comes to service or repair.

I have a dead Honda tractor in my yard with a broken timing belt, the the older Craftsmanship tractor with the Kohler engine is running strong!!

I’m getting 29-31 in my 21 3.0L 1500 RST. More like 20-22 with pure city driving. At the pump, I consistently get 1-1.5 mpg BETTER than what the computer estimates. Rapidly gets worse as I go more than 73 mph.
Towing my 24 ft 6500ish lb travel trailer at 60 mph, I was getting around 14mpg
It would have been nice to hear the engine accelerating when on the test drive without talking.

Electric fans.
Electric fans arent always weaker, especially when considerint against clutch fans since the clutch engagement on fans varies from engine to engine
@@jessehernandez5043 ON a truck, they are absolutley weaker. The clutch fan on a truck consumes 20+ HP. Elect. fans less than 4.
That's why you never see an elect. fan on a HD truck.

I just bought a new 2021 sierra 3.0 and drove it 45 miles in the city and the fuel gauge hasn't moved.. the gas version would have been a quarter empty.
Offer the 3.0 diesel in a 1/2 ton rcsb.

Trailboss is a Chevy. That won't come with the diesel and neither will the WT. The AT4 (like a Trailboss) with the diesel is only available from GMC.
I’m glad that they’re finally realizing how great Diesel engines are..can’t wait to get my hands on one! However...jeez we are a little behind on the 8 ball here! We all knew that diesel has excellent benefits..why did it have to take so long to start to mainstream small displacement diesel motors in usa? They’ve got some real catching up to do if you ask me.
They've always known... everyone knows. It's the amount of money it costs to develop the emissions system for it, and the super low sales numbers compare to gas engines, and the lower quality of diesel fuel we have in North America making dirtier exhaust gases. It's so difficult that Ford discontinued their 3.0 diesel option in their F150, and that's an engine that's certified and been on the road, but they ditched it in favor of hybrids. Toyota has amazing diesel engines all over the world except USA Canada, because it's not worth the extra R&D and certification to get it on the roads here.
What kind of rear gear options are we looking at? Locker available? What size tires are standard for fuel economy? So a rwd model is aiming for 35MPG? I assume bed length wont make a drastic difference...
3.42 gear. Rear locker, no front locker.
HellKitty 101 has the right answers. For fuel economy, this is EPA rated to max out at 30 MPG while the Silverado returns 33. You might be able to do a little better depending on your driving style and where you drive it at.

Diesel. Wait though for 2021. The diesel up charge goes from $2,495 to $995. Makes return on investment a lot easier.

They should have made this the same towing capacity as the 6.2 gas, don’t make sense to me that it’s capacity is less than the 5.3 as well
Might come down to full load EGT's or cooling capacity. Who knows? Maybe he can ask one of the engineer guys when they are on the show. That would be helpful.
If you want a quiet vehicle, get a Prius. Diesels are awesome because of the power they make, the loud noise they make and most importantly the high spool noise of a turbo. Stop making trucks quieter
Yeah that’s great. Is impressive. Too bad it took them this long to create a half ton diesel. Great fuel economy for towing. Way to go GM. Maybe now you can fix all the other issues. Rusty body parts, failed cylinder deactivation, crappy wax coating on frame! List goes on and on. Not mention 50k+ for a truck like this. Let me sell my house and I can buy three of them
Damn dude I dont know what you are talking about I have a 02 duramax. No rust no problems. People now a days have no common sense. You have to take care of your stuff in order for it to last.
I don’t either because I use your so called common sense. My current truck and my last on were rust free. BUT, if gm used the right materials on our trucks we wouldn’t constantly be spraying our panels with some kind of rust proofing spray or lubricant. Also the crappy wax coating on the frame as well. Don’t tell me you don’t have a rust free frame too. I posted an opinion. If your truck is an 02 and COMPLETELY RUST FREE, maybe you should make a video for the people who don’t have your so called common sense.
