    Peter Sallis lived next door to us in Finchley. A reall nice gentleman but quite a private man.
    He was a very keen gardener and took great pride in his climbing roses and hydrangeas

    We spent a week here in 1997, and visited the cafe. Inside it didn't look like the cafe we knew. They turned it round for filming. We watched a rehearsal just by the foot of the stairs. Bill Owen has a stand in, then stepped in for the filming and was step perfect. My husband longed to see Norah Batty and was thrilled when she came out to shout at Compo. Brilliant!

    Brilliant place Brilliant programme used to watch on a Sunday with my mum. It became my mums favourite place to visit until she died. Who would have guessed I would end up living here 18 years after she died. 24 years here. It wasn't the same after compo and cleggy went. Thanks again for sharing love from Gill Holmfirth West Yorkshire ❤️

    My partner & I visited Bill Owen's grave many years ago, the other 2, including Peter's wasn't there at the time & the metal bars were not black, they were bare metal. Did you visit the Last of the Summer Wine museum? It wasn't until we visited it that I realised it started way back in '73.
    It's a beautiful village, so picturesque, no wonder they wanted to be buried there.

    Peter Sallis was in all the episodes. He mentioned that in an interview he gave for the BBC. Both tombstones are for Bill Owen, one from his wife with his real name and the other from his children with his stage name. And now Compo and Cleggie rest together.

    @ianlister4729 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The comment below re Compo's two headatones is quite correct. I believe there was something of a family dispute about headstone so two separate ones was the solution. Of course, Bill's son Tom also appeared in LoSW towards the end, and there was a short period of First of the Summer Wine but that didn't catch on.

    • @MotorHomeBeepBeep
      @MotorHomeBeepBeep  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      hello Ian, very interesting about the two headstones I didn't know and I never heard the first of the summer wine. They mustn't have been many episodes. See you. Alan

    • @ianlister4729
      @ianlister4729 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MotorHomeBeepBeep Hi Alan. Yes, First of SW first shown Jan 88 and there were 2 series'. It depicted Compo, Clegg and Foggy in their younger days (played by other actors of course) and I think that the hope was that it would take over the popularity of Last of SW at a time when they were thinking Last of SW would come to an end because the key actors were getting so old. It didn't work! I suspect it proves that the popularity of Last of SW was the idea of oldies being 'kids', and that people weren't that interested in their younger lives.
      I lived in Holmfirth for many years and often spent time watching the filming. First of SW was more complex to create since all props, costumes, scenes, vehicles, etc had to be aged back to I think it was WW2 times - tv aerials taken off houses, streets artificially 'cobbled', even weeds put in gaps between the cobbles. Google it. Maybe have a watch of it?
      Keep up your fascinating work.
      Hey, have you heard of the late Huddersfield eccentric Jake Manglewurzel? Look him up. He's entombed in his former home - a house of crazy inventions. That might be a good visit for your tour, but be quick because I think his house is on the market and is likely to be demolished, and maybe his body moved.

    Having just watched the third (inventor of the 40-foot ferret) ever episode of Summer Wine, I now believe that the burial plot for Bill was especially chosen, Bill is seen in the episode running past the plot. "William John Owen Rowbotham MBE" - otherwise known as Bill Owen!

  • @CobwebCottage
    @CobwebCottage 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hello Alan
    With the very sad passings today 8/11/22, of both Leslie Phillips and then Tom Owen, son of Bill Owen, (both of Last of the Summer Wine, Owen playing Compo's son in the sitcom, after the passing of his father in real life)....
    Well this got me to thinking about all the beautiful people we've lost just this year and I went in search of names... which led me to one thing, after another and now I've got a small list of possibilities for you to peruse and maybe pick one or two names to cover in your videos,
    *My apologies for the length of this* but I thought the names were worth a mention, just in case you needed a name or two at any time or if you were in an area where you could cover more than one person.
    Oh anyway ... here's the list.....
    (Obviously only do ones which you fancy doing and which you think your followers will enjoy).
    Sir John Gielgud.
    John Le Mesurier.
    Hattie Jacques.
    Max Bygraves.
    Beryl Reid
    *THEN* ... By chance I came across a list of some well known & famous folk who's ashes are interred at Golders Green Crematorium, in North London.
    I wondered if you had some free time spread over a day, to cover a few different people - each as an individual video, as you went around and found their memorial in the grounds. Then you'd have a few video's tucked away in your pocket for future days when the winter rains make visiting places a bit of a nightmare!

    *The following wonderful folks ashes are interred at Golders Green Crem* :-
    Irene Handl .
    Hughie Green
    Bram Stoker
    Marc Bolan
    Joyce Grenfell
    Enid Blyton
    Bernard Bresslaw
    Peter Sellers
    *Yootha Joyce* - actress - who I remember playing Mildred Roper opposite Brian Murphy in the sitcom Man About the House. Warm memories of that programme
    *Gordon Jackson* . (Actor, who amongst a whole lot of other things, played Hudson in Upstairs Downstairs, and Mr. Gordon Lowther (teacher) in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (film) - and was the love interest in the film, of Miss Jean Brodie, played by Maggie Smith).
    *Arthur Brough* (Actor who played the wonderful, warm, menswear assistant, Mr. Grainger, in Are you Being Served)
    *Jimmy Jewel* - actor and comedian - who I have fond memories of when he acted in Nearest and Dearest, with Hilda Baker. Aww loved that team.
    *John Inman*
    *Bernie Winters* - of Mike and Bernie Winters fame. Bernie later performed solo with his St Bernard dog, Schnorbitz
    I've posted this in a comment, in one of your videos 'from the past', so that it will be less 'noticeable' by other You Tubers who do the same 'job' as you do. My thinking was - 'what's the point of Alan having a list, if everyone else has that same list'. So I've hidden it here.
    Sorry it's a bit long, but they all seemed so worthy. *You may have already done a few of these names* - so my apologies for any duplicates. (I'm still working my way through your videos).
    Sending all good wishes. Keep dry. It's continually pouring down here in Dorset! I didn't used to have a swimming pool in my garden, but .......
    Regards ~ Cobs.

      Hi Cob That's got to be the most detailed messaged I received and I think that is superbly nice of you. I really appreciate it. I'll leave my email address and mobile if you ever want to send me a text or call or email whatever just do it. I do appreciate this greatly. The problem you get is that the majority of people I think are cremated and they're kept privately like Hattie but I've gone down the list.
      I've been to Golders green and a few of them have plaques and I've d the ones i filmed but the ones where there's no plaque I don't think there's enough to make a film from that. The ones I did I have squirreled them away for Christmas and January. You've thought very clearly and well about this. It's superb of you.
      Beryl is a good one her ashes were scattered at a cottage so that is doable and I like the idea. I'll give you I mention in the film I put your name next to the details.
      I found the easiest way is to put the person's name plus grave in Google and then finda grave that tells you but sometimes it's not true. They put ones that don't exist or it's a person with the same name that's not well known. I usually look at Google images to see if there's a picture of the stone and you fairly quickly get the idea.
      I've been in London for about 6 weeks but I'm going to head to the West coast and down to Southampton up the other side past Wales on the way back to Whitby. So there's still another month of traveling I think.
      I hope it stops raining for you down there it was pretty bad in London for a couple of days. Some of the roads were flooded.
      Take care. and a big thank you Alan.

      Hello again Alan. Happy Friday poppet!
      I've taken note of the contact details (thank you{, and have them written down in my trusty note book - so, if you want, you can delete the details above, so that you don't get any nuisance calls or dodgy/spam emails.
      Hope the weather becomes less bothersome, ☔ there in London, and when you drive down south, ... drive safely!
      Sending hugs ~ Cobs.

    It's 295 episodes if you count the Comedy Playhouse pilot. Peter Sallie was in every one. The Comedy Playhouse pilot was shown on 4th January 1973.
