I started selling on eBay three years ago after retiring for a hobby something to do. My initial investment was $400 dollars total. 3 years later I’ve made close to $80,000. Not every item was a triple or a home run some are a base hit or a walk. I can’t wait to get out of bed every morning this has truly rejuvenated my life. Funny as I’m writing this I just sold something. I also dream of Jeanie

I love sourcing and recycling, so it is perfect for me at this time. Yes, it’s stressful now, yet I learn, continue to persevere, and stay the course as what is the alternative for me? I've been selling on ebay for 25 years. I see such a change in the buyers now than back when I first started. I know the economy also plays a part in what people can afford to buy now, prices have soared on everything. I am always thankful for anything I make on an item. My entire business model is built on investing $6-$8 per item, Selling for $20-$30 on eBay, and netting $7-$10 per item. We sell 600 ish items a month. I could buy ten times the inventory I do, so its scalable If I wanted to work more. I'm netting 4-6k a month. The idea you cant make this work if you aren't making 1000% ROI are just misguided. I'm a grinder and I work hard.! I don't care what my hourly rate is. I'm happy and I'm the boss. By the way, I use my credit card all the time because I love the points. Pay it off every month.

Also don’t mind buying an item for $20, selling it for $40 + shipping, and netting a $11 or $12 profit. Over time, those profits add up, and who doesn’t like making a 50% profit. Heck, there’s plenty of small items I make only a couple dollars on, but again, a 25% to 30% profit is A.O.K. With me. Just having some fun.

I get tons of my stuff ‘free’. Actually lots of it is from sweat equity! I’ve done several clean-outs after estate sales. At my age I wonder how long I can do that. I also have a couple of friends who say hey I’ve got a box of stuff I’m ready to donate, do you want to go through it first? I’m not too proud to go through and take what I can sell. I know which thrift shop they want me to donate the rest of the stuff to. I also am happy to look for items they want and when I find them at a thrift shop I buy it and give it to them. Don’t kid yourself though…I still love the hunt and do that on a regular basis but am picky with what I buy and how much I spend. I was sorting and reorganizing my eBay area in the basement today… and oh my…that death pile!!! Maybe I’m not as picky as I think I am😖. groan.

I make so much money on travel. My keeping track of mileage is a major write off against profit. Many years I’m driving to pick so much, the government allowed this last year 62.5 cents per mile and making actual $18,000 to $25,000 on legal annual mileage write offs which is so much more than keeping individual receipts like gas, tires, brakes, engine repairs, oil changes, transmission cost even rental costs if your vehicle goes to shop. The allowable standard deduction from profit allows me to keep money to reinvest
That I don’t pay taxes on. Winner winner chicken dinner. Love this business.

The credit card example may have been brought up as many use a dedicated credit card to keep track of their purchases and expenses. If one goes into selling on Ebay expecting to make enough sales in 30 days (It can sure seem that way from some YT videos) to pay off the credit card monthly, that can be the issue. Many, many items are long tail and can take months to sell. Seeing expenses add up while waiting for sales will discourage many people. Even if they are using cash, it can be discouraging. The old adage, "You have to have money to make money", is true with Ebay too. It may not be as much with other businesses, but you still have to be patient to see a return on your investment.

Sometimes you have to research the item, do a write up, quality photos then packing and shipping. Don’t forget people pinging you about questions and requesting different photos. I had a person wanted to see the item outside in the sun. Another wanted to see the earring on my ear. I just want to sell items to get them out of my house. Kids don’t want anything and my husband and I are getting older.

We still have an ebay account but we use it as a way to advertise our Brick and mortar location. We cut back to the smaller size store and we really don't post that much on there. We sell antiques, have a brick and mortar store. We get more walk in traffic than ebay simply by having a facebook page and costing things as they come in. Our time is valuable, so listing photography, taxes, cost of sales just makes no sense on Ebay. People who are trying to sell Yard sale junk are now competing with chinese drop shippers who are selling new products. People work way too hard trying to make living on eaby and there are better alternatives..

I only do this as a hobby to sell things i love so i can build my collections. The cheaper items $20 and under might not seem worth it, but if they list and pack fast, those few dollars profit can add up quickly and help in between the bigger sales. Im willing to pay up for more expensive items. I know It will sell fast and are easy to ship even if i dont double up on it. People need to learn to break down what they'll make before they buy the item and determine if its worth it from the moment they buy the item to when it ships out the door and all fees are taken out. Also, have a way to sell or get rid of old inventory

I hear (read) so many people complain about ebay all the time. I just couldn't be more grateful for it! I have sold off and on since 1999 and am now full-time. Just starting back up in January I am now thrilled with the results! I just need to ramp it up now that I'm back in a groove. What we put into it is EVERYTHING. We hear it so often that we make money on the buy. I buy super low whenever possible and pay attention to sell-through rates, and get as much of my shipping supplies for free as possible. Ebay is helping me put my life back together after Hurricane Ian (we are still rebuilding here in Florida). I am absolutely certain that there is going to be so much more than that because I know what I am capable of. That's where the money is truly made. Keep up the awesome work, I appreciate you 🥰! I don’t think eBay was set up for the nickel and dime garage sale reseller …..trying to make a buck…..It’s more for the niche items, the vintage and the homemade -custom items. We’ve been selling custom hand painted to specific order instructions of buyer, full sized reproduction Carousel horses and rocking horses.. for 25 years… they sell for an average of $3500 so you don’t have to sell that many in a year to add to your income ….never had a problem. It’s when you start listing Willy nilly cheap items .. that’s when people get frustrated on shipping and how eBay works.

Well, I just started following you recently here in Virginia. I was inspired to start an eBay store by you and a couple others. I can't imagine having the amount of inventory you have. I would never put anything on a credit card. I started my store with a hundred-dollar bill that I found. I have not invested any of my own money, I should do about $2,000 in sales my first month. I have 60 items listed. I would literally have to go look for more items to list tomorrow I do not have a back stock. The Goodwill and post office are less than a mile from my house if I need. I've learned in the past 3 weeks that if it can't sell for around $30 (at least) and be picked for around $5 then I don't want it... After fees, if i take a lower offer, at least make $10 bill off that sale. $20 if im lucky. Buuuuuuut, 30% of my items are thing I purchased for around $3 to $5 plus gas, plus time plus energy and I will sell between $40 and $100. 3 weeks into this adventure and I'm shipping 10 items out tomorrow.

They do have a point, but that is looking at that single item and basing the whole business model on that one sale. When volume sales comes into play you end up making anywhere from $2/hr to $500+ hr! I know some days I dont make anything and some I make $100/hr.
Honestly it's too hard to try to make "hourly" pay in reselling. I aim for my yearly salary to be $X amount. You still have zero control over that number, but it keeps a idea on where you should be on items and listings. My ebay store has enough money in it to pay every bill I have off and sit comfortably, but the stuff doesn't sell immediately. Theoretically I have $100/hr+ in inventory.

The ROI calculation has to involve the cost of labor and then be annualized. You always have the option of putting your money in an S&P 500 index fund and getting an average annual return of 10.5% which doubles your money every 10 years. I think it is better to just think about the profit per hour on an item by item basis, like you said. And yes you need to include your sourcing time. Keep a log and get an average per hour of how many items you pick up.

I'm going to have to agree you had money to spend that was yours. Whats left thats actually yours after may be close to breaking even. You must include gas, time sourcing, time listing and yes the big one federal tax. There is a shear large amount of volume to actually truly make out. 1 dollar to every 25 you might make out and lets be honest 1 hour sourcing unless at a good large auction definitely digs into profit.

I ben saying Ebay is back to "normal" pre 2020 I think some newer sellers don't understand the full extend of the Ebay grind pre pandemic and we are just getting back to that time when you have to list good stuff consistently because the days of listing everything and it sells are over imo.

    - "I'm leaving sourcing out of the equation". Well, then we can't accurately assess cost.
    - $2 in the miscellaneous expenses is low.
Even though he used all the boxes he had for free, that doesn't mean they don't have a value that could be considered. You're not always going to have a free box laying around, and even if you do, there's still a market value that could be assigned.
-Not to mention the cost of everything that he can't/doesn't sell that he purchased that sits or he loses on.
-The equivalent cost of storing all that stuff. Ft2 has value and while he may already have space available for this stuff, if he didn't, there would be a cost associated with storage and a value/item could be assigned.
    - Listing items takes time, shipping takes time, sourcing takes time. While we may claim that we enjoy doing those activities, and it doesn't matter anyways, it certainly is a cost.
Without taking all this into consideration, we couldn't accurately come to a $/hr rate.
And because of that, video cannot accurately describe if it's worth it, or not.
A better thing would be for him to take all the time he spends on this stuff, accurately access his total revenue, subtract all his cost (yes, all cost. Equivalent of what it would cost to pay someone to source, ship, list, store, etc) and the come to a total profit.
After he came to that total profit, he would divide by hours spent (all hours) and could come to an hourly rate.

I dream of Genie :) love Turner's skeleton pumpkin shirt. I always keep an eye out for multi-quantity items, but they don't happen often. I'm really bad about knowing my exact numbers, but know my rule of thumb and 2x profit is not enough in most cases to pay the bills. More like 3x-4x minimum, but depends on the price of the item - like you said it's a sliding scale.

Let’s not ignore the fringe benefit of sourcing items on the cheap that you keep instead of buying full retail. What is freedom worth versus the 9-5 grind with only a handful of vacation days ? Roi versus the bank is obviously higher. Source at 4X for cheaper items with a minimum comp filter. Sell through rate considerations need to be quickly searched prior to paying/on sight. Good video Kevin ✌️☘️🇺🇸🍻

I Dream of Genie! I have been selling on eBay for 25 years part time as a hobby and because I love it. I think there are a lot of new sellers that think they can get rich quick without putting in any work. Some people also get stuck spending too much time researching their item and it cuts into time that could be spent listing more items. Keep it simple. List items you are familiar with until you get the hang of eBay. It gets easier with time. You get a feel for what sells quickly vs something that is going to sit in your store forever, and what the profit margins are.
