  • The 700r4 transmission is notorious for failure. Swapping in a computer controlled 4L80e will drastically increase durability and towing capacity.
    Parts needed:
    4l80e 2 wheel drive
    32 spline 4wd output shaft
    adapter for 4L80e or TH400 to your transfer case
    32 spline input shaft for your transfer case
    standalone computer to control transmission
    late model 6.5 flywheel
    late model throttle position sensor (not the early model switch)

    Ok buddy.. Im testing the one hole over for linkage..its a no go..cl9se but the 4l80 is wider..amgle looks close enogh but the arm will need to be shortened so ill retain original holes and modify arm like you did..8f im cuttin the arm no need to drill too. Great video..thanks.. Wosh i could send pics for others to see..

      Update!! One hole over on the linkage works... With a lil modification..i made 9t work by heating and bending the arm.. Cutting and welding works as well.. But only had to heat twice in 2 places and also drilled new holes in arm socket to sl8de it back 3/8.. That took care of wider trans. Ran thru all gears on shifter..no issiues.

    There's a plug in the rear of the case. That you install when going from 4WD to 2WD or vise versa. In 2WD application it lube's the output shaft bushing

    • @CrankAddict
      @CrankAddict  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not necesary to swap this plug when going from 2wd to 4wd, but you'd better drill it if you go from 4wd to 2wd!

    great video.. can you say what year your Burb is, also did you not need a Transfer case adapter? Also, can you comment on the lengths of the driveshafts needed? I have a 203 mated to a TH400, so sounds like it would be a direct bolt in?

  • @guysmiles2822

    Hey CA. You don't mention it in your video but am guessing you used the factory radiator setup for transmission cooling? Have you had any issues with the trans fluid running hot? Have read that the 4L80e doesn't like temps above 200 degrees. My third gen firebird would probably fry it's 4L80e without a external cooler? Thanks for the video.

    Hi there brother I found your video to be very educational, I’ve got a 87 blazer 700r4 4x4 and I’m looking to either upgrade to a 4l60e or 80e however since it is my first time doing a switch like this I’d greatly appreciate whatever tips you got. I can’t figure out which harness to buy which controller or even part and how to do a TPS signal for it

    • @CrankAddict
      @CrankAddict  ปีที่แล้ว

      Is your blazer fuel injected? If so that's an easy TPS source, else you can buy an aftermarket sensor that can bolt to your Holley, quadrajet, whatever. I used the TCI controller, but any standalone will work.

    Not sure if you’re still answering questions on this video.. but here goes.
    6.5/4l80 combo from 96 1 ton putting in a 69 c10 that I’m also solid axle converting. Has driver drop np241 I’m pretty sure. If I were to swap a passenger np241 or np208, what would I do for rear speed sensor?

    • @CrankAddict
      @CrankAddict  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      use the 2wd model 4l80 and either cut the output shaft like I did, or buy a 4wd output shaft and put it in. The output shaft swap sounds scary if you've never been inside a transmission before but just keep all the "modules" together and re-assemble them as modules and it is not so bad.

    I have an 86 chevy short box GMC 4x4 that currently has an SM465 manual in it. I havent taken out the transfer case yet but it must be a 32 spline case since my understanding is that an 86 SM465 is 32 spline? I havent been able to inspect the truck yet, so not sure what transfer case is actually in it. Thoughts on these questions?

    • @gabriell9289

      Yes you probably have a NP241 with a 32 spline. Same spline count as many and 4l80E

      I couldn't find any such swap info on the internet. I would just skip the used shaft and buy the correct new input shaft.

    Great video. Appreciate it. What did you end up doing for the gear selector? Quite a difference between the 700 and the 4l80. Guessing it took a fair amount of fabricating?

    • @CrankAddict
      @CrankAddict  ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually it was easy. I bolted on a 700r4 "fork" to the side of the 4l80e gear selector. I then had to cut and reweld ("re-clock") the gearshift cross shaft to make it work.

    • @guysmiles2822
      @guysmiles2822 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the info. You're right. It's easy. Just swapped out the 700 bracket in place of the 4l80 bracket. Looks like the gearshift cable and bracket from the car (3rd gen trans am) which bolts to the oil pan should hook right up to it. Thanks again.👍

    • @guysmiles2822
      @guysmiles2822 ปีที่แล้ว

      What did you do with the reverse lights and neutral safety switch wiring? The stand alone controllers don't have a provision for that. Must have to splice them in to the 4l80 some how? Thanks.

      @@guysmiles2822 The squarebodies have those switches on the steering column. Just reuse those. If you are using the original squarebody shifter then there is no change to the switch.

    I'm interested in doing this swap. I have a 1985 K20 suburban. It has a th400 transmission and a np208 transfer case. Do I need a adapter for the transfer case to mount to the 4l80e transmission?

    • @CrankAddict
      @CrankAddict  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need the factory adapter for a turbo 400 to np208 or if you can find one, a 4l80e to np208 adapter.

    Buenas noches amigo tengo una Chevrolet 1995 detroit 6.5 electrónica y la hice a bomba de inyección mecánica y trae la transmisión 4l80 pero no me hace todos los cambios solo 2 y antes con la otra bomba los hacia bien como podre correjirlo

      Cambia los solenoides de cambios adentro el 4l80. Hay 2 y son faciles a cambiarlos. Si todavia no funciona entonces probablamente tiene un problema con la bomba or los connectiones.

    I’m trying to buy this same truck and I’m pretty mechanically inclined but want to tackle on first time trans rebuilds etc like how you’re doing. They want 2500$ for it with a supposed trans issue, where is the best place to buy a quality trans rebuild kit for this 6.2 diesel transmission,

      I wouldn't waste my time on the factory 700r4. Get a 2wd 4l80e and a controller and swap it. I bought my 'burb for $2000 with blown head gaskets. I've made quite a few improvements since then.

    What’s the difference between the 2wd and 4wd gearing and strength wise? My blazer has 35 inch tires so hopefully the 2wd can handle it

    • @CrankAddict
      @CrankAddict  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      same strength. The only internal differences are the output shaft and the presence of the 2nd speed sensor. I consider the 4l80e STRONGER than a TH400.

    • @CrankAddict
      @CrankAddict  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you don’t have the rear speed sensor located in the transfer case how does it shift properly when they case is in low range?

    • @CrankAddict
      @CrankAddict  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Does a 4l80e shift the same if you put 4.88 gears in your truck? Sure. It has no idea of the tire speed-only the trans speed. Your digital speedometer will be way off, however, but I don't look at my speedo when crawling over rocks. If you like to look at your speedo in low then use an analog speedo and hook it up to the t-case.

    • @chadstevens8086
      @chadstevens8086 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doesnt the trans controller use the the speed signal to know when to shift? Thank you for replying.

    • @CrankAddict

      @@chadstevens8086 speed=rpm* gear. It shifts the same, but the torque converter will lock up around 25mph n LOW because the computer thinks your're doing 60.
