Ben, as I used to say to freshmen in college who I mentored, “Do you know why everyone has asked you what you will be majoring in and what you will do when you graduate? It’s so people my age may get a new idea on what we may want to do when we grow up, because we don’t know how we got where we are!” Always keep your options open, keep moving - and moving backwards is okay (it allows for “do-overs”), and don’t ever burn any bridges - you never know when you will need to cross them again. Patton said, “I don’t like to pay for the same real estate twice”, meaning he didn’t like to retreat. But that was war, however, Patton recognized mistakes he made and learned from them by “thinking as if he had retreated”. So just keep moving and you will find the right path. I’ve learned a lot from you and wish you nothing but the best!
It's your life Ben. You gotta live it. Thanks for the update. Hell I'm 55 and have a law degree and never practiced a minute (there are lots of factors in that situation). All I want to do is regen ag now. I never had a vision of my future when I was young, now I do. Find your "purpose" Ben (see Simon Sinek) and be true to that purpose. It's not easy, finding the "Why". Took me over a year, but I'm settled on it now--to leave all the lands I manage greener and better than I found them--so I "have" to do R/A. But right now I'm doing three other jobs to put me in place to set my land up for grazers.
Mixed feelings, but you are a very talented, intelligent person with your whole life ahead of you. I coined a phrase when I was a little younger than you: "Never let your short term deviations effect your long term goals". Biggest part of that is figuring out your long term goals. Best of luck to you and I look forward to some pretty substantial things from you in the future!
Advice I would have given to my younger self … from 20-30 - find who you are and what you love to do, 30-40 - become an expert at it, 40+ find a way to make your expertise work for you. Congratulations to you for your accomplishments over the last couple of years … you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be at this point in your life. 😊. If you continue making a positive impact on others, the way Greg describes you did with him, the world will be your playground …
I align with this comment for sure and Playgrounds are meant for play! Also, past are informative and meant to stay in the past. The more you complete your past and release the past from your general consciousness (essentially erasing the slate); you will find peace and freedom in that space for creation and play. Enjoy your Journey Ben!
Thanks for all the content Ben. It really helped get my ranch started and running. I know all about changing direction. After 35 years in practice as a chiropractor, at age 64, I decided to turn my life sideways, move to Oklahoma from California and start up a regenerative ranch. I found that I was made for this stuff. I think when you hit on it, the new thing will feed your soul, make you very happy and most successful. Much love and many blessings sir. I look forward to hearing about the new thing.
I had the feeling just watching you this last year plus that you were destined for big things. Whether it's in regenerative ag or not, I'm sure you'll do just fine. But the experience you've had with Greg, Jan and Isaac will undoubtedly come in to play in your future, and serve you well. All the best of luck, young fella!
Good call. I had a feeling that that kind of life was not your destiny. Best wishes to you. May you find some joy in each day and always have everything you need.
all the best, have changed occupations four times over the last 74 years and so will you over your lifetime. have always enjoyed your comments and views on life. again all the best to you and your young and have a full life ahead of you, go for it!!!
Congratulations for discovering what didn't work for you. Now A new adventure is afoot ! I believe that education is something that you will carry and this experience will have taught you things that will someday be useful in some aspect of your life 🤷🏼♀️☘️💖🍀💖☘️🖖🖖🖖🖖👍👍👍👍😘💞🙋🏼♀️
Thanks for the update Ben. I’m excited to see where your desires and creativity lead you. If I may add… Chase your dreams as my Mom would say. Be bold and courageous choosing your path and continue to share what you are looking to create and fears to tap the resources and energy of the community you are connected with through your social media channels as a way to achieve what you want. Have fun with your discoveries. I’m grateful to have come across you while your path traveled through Green Pastures Farm. You’re a good person Ben, respected and appreciated by many.
Ben, you were an enjoyable and interesting person, on the Judy ranch. As were the others. We Will miss those moments, but More Importantly, is Your Life Choices ! God Speed Ben. ** ps; you and Issac were very entertaining doing Chewing the Cud. Thanks for those fun moments.
Good to see you once again. I often wondered how you are doing. Watching your videos I got the impression you are well educated and a much motivated person. Agriculture isn't the only occupation in the world. Kind of sad to lose you though, as agriculture is starved of independent thinkers. You have to follow your heart thiugh Hope to hear more from your journey in the future.
Daggone...I knew something wasn't right. I appreciate your honesty with all of us. No one knows the future. You will be fine. At its best, we all got to know a fine young man. A hand shake goes right here.
Ben, it’s been fun watching you learn & grow over the past year and a half. Greg was a great example of an authentic individual. His thoughts, words and actions were all in alignment. If you can do the same with your life you will be successful whatever you choose to do. GODS Speed
Just know that you and your thoughts and ideas have been really helpful to me (and obviously many others). At your age you need to follow whatever path interests and intrigues you. All the best!!
Life is a journey not a destination, let yourself find what makes you happy! You will always have the friends you have made in the past and future! Live life for Life’s sake!
Thanks for all the great content. I am sorry that it sounds like you won't continue in agriculture. The sector needs all the smart young people it can attract. Best wishes for whatever you decide. But keep your mind open to coming back in whatever role you choose. Hope out paths cross some day.
Echoing all the positive statements previous to this. Ben when I was your age...no kidding. Probably had my hand in two dozen different opportunities by that time. Then something clicked. It was never on my radar. High five.
Sorry to hear that the direction you were in didn’t work out, you seem so very happy when we were there last year, I don’t know what the future holds but I hope you’re going to do something that makes you as happy as you were, if not more so.
Good luck with your life. It will be our species loss not to have one more dedicated regenerative ag farmer/rancher out there but do what you feel best for YOU, and that is what counts.
You have so much knowledge, sad to see it leave agriculture but hopefully you will be back or talked that knowledge and use it for good where you can. Will follow your life journey whatever the future brings.
Massachusetts is a pretty great place to be a direct marketing grazier or farmer.... just sayin. Farming isn't for everyone though. I wish ya the best.
Well this is exciting. You seemed driven toward a career as a ranch manager, but that would be something within regenerative ranching. Your aiming for something different makes me quite curious as to where you could go from there and not in regenerative ranching.
Maybe its time to go to a brittle environment and transform desert into super productive grassland? What Greg does is easy since its a humid environment. There is nothing more meaningful to do in life than to stop the global desertification that has going on for the past 10.000 years with the new knowledge from Allan Savory. Global desertification is the biggest threat to humanity, and its also the only solution to stabilizing the climate from its changing course.
People change their career, on average, 9 times a life time. School is just a place to learn how to learn. Internship teaches you how to work while you learn. It also teaches you that making mistakes are important. When you have skin in the game, you learn that that mistakes cost you time and money. Sometimes they are the best lessons, other times they can ruin you. Balance will win the race. The worst mistake is when you don't learn from it and repeat the mistake a second time.
If you want to reboot chewing the cud in a changed form, assuming you aren't totally disinterested in ag, I'd definitely watch a channel or listen to a podcast where you interview regenerative farmers and ranchers.

To quote Yogi Berra, "When you come to a fork in the road, take it."
The cool thing is that you gave 100% while you were there. I know you’ll succeed in anything you pursue because of that. All the best!
Thank you much appreciated
Hey, at least you found out now instead of much later. I totally respect that. That took guts. I’ll keep following you.
Much appreciated. New content coming in the future

I would be really interested in knowing more about your decision to get out of regenerative agriculture. Good luck with your future Ben.

Good for you Ben......I always wondered about you being from Mass & a graduate of ivy league Cornell....just that you do not seem like an Aggie.
Life’s full of surprises
Happy Thanksgiving, Ben
Good luck with your life. It will be our species loss not to have one more dedicated regenerative ag farmer/rancher out there but do what you feel best for YOU, and that is what counts.

Hi from Virginia. Please give another update. What drove you away????
Keep on Truckin’!
Will do
You have so much knowledge, sad to see it leave agriculture but hopefully you will be back or talked that knowledge and use it for good where you can. Will follow your life journey whatever the future brings.

Who would I reach out to as a potential managing grazing partner? Who would you recommend?
Well this is exciting. You seemed driven toward a career as a ranch manager, but that would be something within regenerative ranching. Your aiming for something different makes me quite curious as to where you could go from there and not in regenerative ranching.

This is insane. Can’t believe you left the farm prior to finishing your apprenticeship.

Hi Ben. What were your realizations about Regenerative Ag ?
Miss you
😎✌👌👍🖖😁
Thanks for all the content Ben. It really helped get my ranch started and running. I know all about changing direction.
