I remember playing this at sears. It was the sweetest game I had ever played up to that point. Christmas of 1989 I got this game. I was the happiest boy in the world. Don’t really remember much about it and I’m sure I beat it. I just remember how awesome the graphics were. Good times.....
This is in my opinion the greatest port of Wonder Boy in Monster Land, even better than the arcade.

I remember as a kid, nothing in this game was harder than jumping over the boss key to get all the cash when I didn't have boot upgrades.
For me, it was that freakin' mushroom boss at like the 3rd stage just before you go into the first castle. That dude and his puked up mushroom babies got the better of me for a while.

At the beginning, when you start, there is a coin hidden in the trees, beyond the signboard. And at the first store, jump facing the wall on the left side for a bag of gold.
That game was one of my favorites of all time. It took so long to figure out. Having no save point s was tough.
Bionic Commando was an amazing game for NES, no save point either...loooooong game.
IMO the best Wonderboy of all systems. Brings my childhood back *nostalgia*

You can actually fight the squid at 10:37 twice. After fighting the squid, enter the water you had to jump over prior to entering it's lair (assuming you didn't fall into said water before) and, after you resurface, the door to the squid's lair will look normal instead of barred, allowing you to fight it again for extra gold and a giant heart.
That’s a squid? We called it a vacuum cleaner because we had no idea what it was! 🤣

And can often get the second best shoes from the octopus in the sea part

you can also get 64 gold by wiggling the joystick when you jump for coins

This is it! I've been searching for this game for decades! I knew there was a game I loved as a kid where there was an under water shop but you had to go left to get to it as you floated down. That's really all I remember @9:57
Another great game, that I sadly never finished. Only made it past the Sphinx a few times as a kid with lucky guesses. Glad to finally see how it ends.

I almost got through the whole game at age 8, now at age 28 I can barely get anywhere. Child-me was definitely better at this stuff...
I have beaten the SMS version before when playing it on my Game Gear. I usually preferred the PC Engine version (Bikkuriman World) since it was closer to the arcade version.
i finished it in 1988 I was ten, there's many tricks and hidden things, my brother's and I played for months, my second favourite, best is dragons trap
same for me. except the last round in the tower upwards. Today I am more calm for this part ^^
I was 6 years old when I got to the tenth level boss. I died but it was the farthest either me or my older brother had gotten.
I just raised my arms in victory and walked out of the room. 😁
@NPC #34254334 Response: I don't know if you've beaten this game now, but it is a game that is unfair since they expect you to play this in 1 sitting without any passwords or continues. You have to know all the secret doors in this game, power up your guy to the fullest, find money and hope it doesn't glitch on you doing that brick to brick wall jump in the last level. If you miss something in this game because you didn't know where certain bosses were etc. You won't be beating this game.
This is an all-time classic man!

I loved the added stage where you revisit the place you've been before and it's abandoned, all doors X added to the atmosphere of the impending doom of Wonder Land if you're unsuccessful!
The changed Maze path was surpising too since I have memorized the arcade one!

Wonderboys were the best thing on Master System, could never get bored with this game for some reason.
There are so many brilliant gameplay ideas in this game that never appeared in any game after this; not even in the sequels.
Whats sick about this game is the ending leads straight into WB 3 Dragons liar, and starts with you escaping the castle.

Did not know that. There was so much gear upgrades I had to make decisions on because of how money was in this game. Gonna replay this now with this trick
Great memories. For me, the hardest part was the castle's maze. No way I would have finished this game without getting some pointers on how to find the right path.
Used to clock this and also play 1943 in my lunch break for 20c on cabinet and tabletop before consoles! :)
The pyramid and those questions always killed me! There are still areas I never seen since I couldn't jump there.
The only Wonder Boy game I've played but was never able to reach the end boss. I think the furthest I was able to go was the blue boss with the ring of fire balls! What a twist about the last boss!

I bought this game at Toys R US based solely on the couple of thumbnail images on the back of the cartridge case. Almost 40 years later it's still my favorite 8-bit video game👍

Such a great game here and probably the most underrated WB game in the franchise here. The Dragon's Trap stole all the kudos point, I bought the original Wonder Boy when I got my SMS 2 in 1989 and I hired WB In Monster Land the most. Dark horse classic.

The part in the last castle where you jump all the way up on the two red blocks is the bane of my existence. I used to beat this game and my meat at the same time and now I can't get past those damn red blocks. Wonder Boy always gets hung up in the top of the screen. Can't recall how it was so easy 30 years ago.
Easy way to do this part...I found out today actually...Buy Ceramic boots...You won't get stuck jumping back & forth.
Thank you for uploading this game! I only got as far as those two tricky platform steps that you had to take all the way up to the very top in that part of the dragon's labryrinth in order to proceed further. I always got stuck there (lol), but glad to see the ending all the same. Games like this one made me proud to have owned a Master System. The NES may have sold more units, but Sega's 8-bit counterpart was better quality IMHO.

Easy solution to that...Don't buy legendary boots at all do not get them either. If you still have the game or access to it....Buy ceramic boots... You will not get stuck and the jumping will be super easy... You should be able to do it in 1 try....
That red squid thing is damn near immortal
This game took so many of my quarters when i was 10 years old.Unfortunately ijust couldn't beat it.The game still rocks in 2018 along with bubble bobble and double dragon.

This was my favorite video game of all time. I could never find the boss in the final round though. I would try to knock on what seemed like every inch of every wall to no avail. I would finally die of natural causes countless times.
The dragon was a ROBOT!! MIND FUCKING BLOWN.

One of my favorite games ever. A good way to kill 45 minutes. Granted, I don't remember the pathways in the last castle.
my late grandmother give me a coin every time i visit her , and sped it on this exact game machine.
Getting the perfect play through of this was maddening. Can't miss a single hidden door or invisible coin font or pick the wrong item and then there was the whole ruby and bell thing. I was so frustrated with this when I was a kid, lol.
Yes! This game was ridiculously hard as a child. It was impossible to purchase the best equipment without finding all the stupid hidden coins in clouds. It wasn't enough that you killed every enemy you came across! The only way to afford the Legend equipment was by killing all the enemies AND finding the hidden coins floating in the sky! So frustrating!

When I was younger, I initially thought those little mushroom monsters (called a Malkonid in the manual) were supposed to be a lady's head, which I guess was due to the low resolution? (In the manual, and indeed on this video they are obviously mushrooms.) I also learned the word "labyrinth" from the box of this game, and I misread it as "ladybrinth", so I took ladybrinth to be what those "lady heads" were called.
Since I wasn't able to beat this game yet, I prefer the Wonderboys that followed this one. Still very interesting and challenging game. You can't backtrack, so you have to choose wisely when buying armor. Pretty hard game.
