When UnderVatten first came out I was all into HLB's Valde, and also was going through a break up. Gotta admit - since probably 2014-15 I was no more pleased by how old Vildhjarta sounds. And all things considered I listened to UnderVatten in kinda shuffle mode, and not even the whole thing. What a blasphemy. But 3-4 months later, when my life was all norm and balanced again, I've listened it two times in a row in intrumental, and GOD was I hooked. Since then I listen to this wonderful piece of art at least once per week, but more likely 3-4 times per week. And the thing is - it's still fresh! Idk how they did it, but the guys came out with the perfect fit for my music taste. I just can't listen to anything else now, dafaq

I added some timestamps for the different tracks :) thank you for this beast! I enjoyed it all!
    ~ MÅSSTADEN ~
    5:00 - shadow
    - 7:50 ”Vocal cadence ( with Katy Perry example), language and first vs second album”
    16:40 - dagger

    25:26 - eternal golden monk
    - 28:39 ””I know your wounds still burn” - possibly referenced in [track + timestamp] (I missed it lol)”
    30:11 - benblåst
    33:25 - östpeppar
    35:21 - traces
    42:40 - phobon nika
    - 43:41 (the one pixel gap gets fixed!!)
    47:09 - måsstadens nationalsång
49:07 - when no one walks with vou
    52:36 - all these feelings
    - 1:01:28 ”Thoughts on western perception of tunings etc”
    1:04:18 - noja
    1:08:24 - deceit
    1:14:06 - the lone deranger
1:22:20 transition between the two albums + album art for måsstaden under vatten. btw ”den helige anden” (the holy duck/spirit) is who the duck is. The meaning of the word 'anden' changes depending on which vowel you stress with a pitch accent when spoken out loud: 1st pitch accent gives you: *a*nden = the duck; 2nd pitch accent: *a*nd*e*n = the spirit. Search for "swedish pitch accent" for a nice vid explaining it better :)
    ~ MÅSSTADEN UNDER VATTEN ~
    1:25:25 - lavender haze
1:35:18 - när de du älskar kommer tillbaka från de döda
    - 1:37:35 (a perfect description of Swedish)

    - use of major keys + introduction of ”ambient motifs”
    1:45:25 - toxin
    - 1:49:46 ”Rhythm switchup during the last part”

    - 2:15:12 ”kaos2 ending ambient motif”
    2:17:39 - heartsmear
    - Couldn’t resist saying that it’s probably wolves you hear during the outro, also the 16ths on the hi-hat are definitely done with the feet, ’chicking’ the top and bottom together with the pedal.
    2:21:03 - vagabond
    - 2:21:15 ”PROTIP: Make sure the synth and the vocals are in the SAME KEY!”

It's so interesting seeing appreciation for their work on an analytical level! I personally just enjoy the work emotionally, so hearing how this all works is fascinating. UV has been such an important album for me - I've been in my mid 30's and music kinda lost its magic on me. I was sure nothing would ever reach me emotionally like all the discoveries in my teenage years. This album tore a lot of things open I thought I'd lost, and I'll forever cherish it for that. Even honored it as my first tattoo to keep reminding myself that no passion is ever truly lost. There's just something about these 1-2octave pitch little melodies between the chugging and the ambient that elevates their music from pure djent to something that reaches deeper for me.
On a side-note, try not to get the beard concerns too much into your head. A lot of men struggle with uneven growth, but noone ever noticed that as much as they do :D.

Love hearing your passion for these albums, I feel the same.
For me the album that came really close to the broken-speechless-overwhelmed kinda experience you describe, is Catch 33 by Meshuggah. First hearing Shed on a metal compilation disc, which send me in a whirlpool of discovering and re-discovering Meshuggah's music. Catch 33 has the same kind of structure, needing to listen to the whole album in one sitting and feeling an existential emptiness as the heaviness of Sum makes place for ambient guitars.
The same happened to me with MUV, which made me question my favorite band (which is important to me) for a year and resulted in Vildhjarta as the winner :)

But the second is one of the most incredible pieces of music I’ve ever heard. Incredibly complex and brutal but so listenable. It’s very melancholy but the sheer imagination and originality makes me smile! Masterpiece!

Some little facts about their cleans. Buster did a mix session for the single version of Den Helige Anden and he explains that they cleans on this album are old clean tracks coming from late 2000's, even before 2011 masstaden. Also says that almost all those cleans have different amount of pitch shifting and different amount of time stretch editing, therefore they sound different because of artifacts (or audio degradation) so that makes it "microtonal" or no on 440hz

Well, Max Martin was involved in that Katy Perry song, because of course he was, so maybe it's the bad Swedish influence manifest.
Possibly Swedish, allegedly sounding a bit melodic, is more allowing towards fudging the syllables. I don't know.

Fantastic. Regarding that "singing it like you say it" deal, absolutely agree. It happened to me with Uneven Structure after Februus. Man, I love Uneven's instrumentals. But Matheu just does not get English in a good way. He does that thing so much I just had to stop listening to them. Don't know if you have ever tried them, "8" is a masterpiece, but the rest is just too uncanny to hear only because of the lyrical-vocal part.

I’m not sure if you’ve noticed but both of the new singles actually use a riff from den helige anden. So they are already tying the new thing they’re making into under vatten. I genuinely think den spanska kanslan is their best song to this day, so I have high hopes it will absolutely top under vatten.
Edit: Calle has since corrected me, and it isn’t the same riff, so I’ve just found something where there actually isn’t anything. Please disregard this.

@@callethomer Oh! My apologies then. Just that the riff from 1:20 at den helige anden - under vatten sounds VERY similar to the riff in the intro to + ylva + and the riff at 4:03 on + den spanska kanslan +. Not sure if it’s intentional or not, but the similarity is uncanny! Adore all of your music, sorry for the inconvenience if I have spotted something that doesn’t exist, I’ll go edit the original comment to correct it.

    • @vernaltear
      @vernaltear ปีที่แล้ว

@@callethomer so I’ve been now listening to the three riffs I mentioned over and over again, and it’s because of the very beginning of the riff, the tone shifts are very similar, and then on the part where you do some long slides in den helige anden, in + ylva + and + den spanska kanslan + you don’t use slides, but follow a similar structure in terms of the melody. They’re similar riffs, but not the same like you said.

1:41:01 I have the same issue when drinking alcohol and found there's actually a term for it:
    en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_flush_reaction
I was under the impression for the longest time that I just had a really low tolerance for alcohol, but since this reaction is heavily determined by genetics (presence or absence of a specific enzyme) no matter how much or little I drink I have the exact same reaction every time.
I wanted to acknowledge this aside because if you are able to drink regularly despite having the reaction, it does increase risk for developing esophageal cancer compared to others who do not experience the reaction.
