Why I absolutely love is on the right, there is a table with two men, and one does the same thing as Thomas and runs away, abandoning the other. Is the wife mentally challenged? Is she incapable of analyzing risk for herself? Is she lacking any sense of self-preservation or instinct to protect her children? I'm confused. Is the film's premise that women are weak, stupid and incapable of self-preservation or protection without intervention from a man?
The mother didn't need to ask the father's permission to take her children and leave the area. Hey kids, let's go watch the avalanche from waaaaay over there. Then when the avalanche hit, she just froze there with them. She was STILL there when the powder cleared. Safety was right there! Just a matter of feet away. All she did was freeze like a deer in the headlights.

Director Ruben Östlund manages to strech his film for two hours, based on a single, devastating question: do we really know those we think we know? Many things are taken for granted in the relationship, important subjective matters are never mentioned, until a dreadful event that threats their lives confronts them with a disparity of reactions that triggers a cascade of doubts, quickly shared by others who find themselves unexpectedly involved. Östlund reveals an exquisite control of the environment, which accompanies the growing feeling of estrangement and coldness of the woman towards her husband. The point is well made in the first hour and a half of the movie. The last scenes on the bus repeat a concept to show that this can happen to anyone.
isn't it more about how weakness of character is judged entirely different based on sex? The last scene shows the wife pulling the same shit and no one really cares

False, incorrect and WRONG. At that age the child's brain is very very very small and will not remember this. I'm sure the cowardly mother will remind him constantly as a way to punish the dad. What really happened was the father was trying to clear a path for them to get through and the scared (and weak) mother was holding her children at the table. Pathetic.

In Force Majeure, he's clearly abandoning them even though there is an opportunity to save at least one family member.
And what exactly did the wife do besides stand there in panic? Is she unable to think for herself? Is she unable to act to protect herself or her kids? Are we to believe that she is the "weaker" sex and helpless without the intervention of her man?

I just saw the ad for Downhill and I "wikied" Downhill and learned it was based on this movie. Force Majeure got 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and Downhill got 46%. It's likely that, as is usually the case, the American remake of a good foreign movie isn't as good.

Father Of The Year right here
0:42 LMFAO dude just went off and protected a stranger instead of his own family
"Avalanches above, business continues below"
Damn daddy, that's how you feel? What you even come back for, should've just kept right on trucking.
Shayla Brown it’s fake.
What a loser. And that poor sweet little boy! Just watching it, all I want to do is protect him and the little girl!! So many props to the mother. She was incredible. This movie is wild to say the least. I definitely need to watch it again.
This would be my story if I were in his shoes: “I didn’t leave my family behind. I was getting myself to a safe place so I could assist you in the event that you were all buried in the snow. It’s like when an airplane loses cabin pressure. You secure your own mask to your own face first, THEN assist the person next to you.”
most stupid comment ive ever read, airplane is very different on what happen on the video! as a father i would secure my family before it got worst! but he insist its nothing and after he realize his stupidity he run like a bitch and get back like nothing happen!
Nice try
Funny that's literally one of the lines in the movie.
Epic scene, don't care if it memed from Twitter. Dad's a real bum leaving his fam like that, tho.
Funny how the sound is just perfect. 😂😂😂😂
anybody here from the new downhill movie?
xo yeaah man!
I just saw the ad for Downhill and I "wikied" Downhill and learned it was based on this movie. Force Majeure got 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and Downhill got 46%. It's likely that, as is usually the case, the American remake of a good foreign movie isn't as good.
