  • Russia Regains "High Income" status Despite Western Sanctions | Vantage with Palki Sharma
The World Bank says Russia is a High-Income country once again. This comes despite thousands of sanctions that the West has imposed on Russia since 2014. Moscow has decided to look to the Global South for its economic needs, and this strategy seems to have borne fruit.

No, Russia is NOT doing well.
As a matter of fact their economy is seriously hurting while it's going in overdrive due to the war.
Example: making a car in Russia by Russian people and selling to Russians = healthy economic activity
vs Making a tank in Russia by Russians to use and destroy. = bad economic activity

Maybe because this is not credible. Maybe because it is not mentioned that the russian economy is inflated by massive expenditure of arms for the war. It doesnt take into account the rouble getting more and more worthless, the sneaking inflation, not to mention the long term implications of the sanctions. But by all means keep dreaming, but dont get surprised when you wake up to reality.

Why do you think that CNN or most normally reliable news do not post this? Could it be because the whole "news" organization called FP isn´t news but a propaganda channel???
Same dumb argument used again and again... why doesn´t CNN post that Biden controls the world together with Orban??? perhaps because that is a BS claim???
Now start with some education and critical thinking... it would help you for the rest of your life. Think if you lived in North-Korea, and you repeated their information... every country outside is evil, and only their dear loved leader Jong Un can save you... you must work hard for Un, with a minimal pay, to show your respect... as the enemy countries would otherwise torture you.
And then you went through all of your life repeating that same shit, thinking you have the correct information. From the outside people would laugh at your stupid stories. Same here!

When the BRICS were formed 20 years ago, Putin was already President and Russia was its second largest economy. Today it has fallen to fourth. The real question is why Russia hasn't ALWAYS been a high income country? It has by far more natural resources than any other country, yet this does not translate into prosperity for much of the nation. In 2000, the average Russian worker had twice the income of the average Chinse worker. Today they are almost the same. What is China, with few natural resources, doing right that Russia, with enormous natural resources, is doing wrong?

@aeluzarii I live in Russia and absolutely see many homeless people on the streets. US has much more social help for homeless than Russia far as I know (in states like California and such).
It is true that there's less homeless typically than in the US but only because the US doesn't lock up people in asylums against their will. In Russia it is likely for homeless people to just be locked up in an insane asylum (with really fucking horrible conditions, mind you).
Also most of the common Russian population is VERY poor, just so you know. Not necessarily starving but unable to buy much except basic necessities.
Do not be fooled, Russia is not prospering under Putin though it is true that sanctions haven't crippled us as much as the west has hoped. 2010-2014 was prolly the best economic period, after the Crimea sanctions $ doubled in price compared to ruble and its been pretty crappy to be a common russian since then.

      - apart military -rest of economy is in the decline (war economy)
      - medical care is crap: 7 years shorter lives vs Western Europe + one of the highest alcohol related desists.
      - avaition sector is drowning (spare parts problem)
      - even with lower costs - average level of living is below Bulgaria (the poorest country in the EU) - minium salary: $210/month!
      - corruption is on Africa level (140th place /180) - created current flood in Russia - but excuse is that "rodents eaten the dam" ;)
      - infrastructure (apart from big cities) is 20 years behind Europe - commie looking towns+ poor villages
      - "brain drain" + population in decline (especially Slavic)
      - economy wise, Russia is becoming China vassal (totally depended on)
      - reserves are depleted - the war will be funded by higher taxes now
      - 15% of refineries are damaged by Ukrainian drones+ over 33% of Russian Black Sea fleet already sunk
      - "fake conservatism" - very high level of divorces/abortion/ child abandonment, etc. (only 8% of church attendees - lower than in Holland!)
      - "Green Revolution" will damage future profits soon (oil/gas economy)
      - Putin can't even protect Moscow against ISIS - despite warnings
      - fact that you can go to prison for calling war a war (etc.), - is icing on the cake

People, consumer markets and labor generate wealth, not natural resources.
Hence, why South Korea, Singapore and Japan have absolutely no natural resources and yet are as rich as they are today.
If Natural resources alone generated wealth then Africa and Latin America would be the richest regions in the world.
Also China too is flooded with natural resources. The problem is they consume more than anyone else in the world and therefore need to import to meet all their needs.
It is because China has so many natural resources that Imperial Japan wanted to conquer China during WWII to feed its industries.
All of the Western manufacturers moved to China because China had a massive amount of cheap high skilled labor and the industrial and logistical infrastructure to fuel and back that labor.
Russia did not have the population to compete with China.
Furthermore, as you said Chinese labor was 1/2 of that of Russia.
Hence why Western manufacturers went to China instead of Russia.
When Vladimir Putin came to power Russia was deep into debt, the country was on its knees.
Not only did Putin pay Russia's entire national debt he built a reserve of $600 Billion.
Russia's GDP per capital is 3x than it was when Putin came to power.

Countries without many natural resources have to develop their human capita, like Japan or Israel. By contrast, resource rich countries tend to be more neglectful of the development of their human capital, like Russia or Argentina.
Putin's government has been a slow car crash for Russia in many ways. Population falling, inflation at 8,5%, interest rates twice that, shortage of skilled labour, low wages for most Russians, a self-inflicted war it will be lucky to escape with less than a million casualties, etc., etc..

Capitalist economy is mathematically unbalanced. That's why it can't contain itself within the given borders of a country. U can't simply work/produce and consume the product you have just produced within this system. You will either need to lower costs, find new (outer) markets, tap foreign raws to get extra supply and lower the oil prices, offshore the industry, accumulate debts and print money. This all comes due to inherently unbalanced maths.

Europe used to buy Russian resources because they were close to Russia, but if you look at the facts, you'll see that the USA and Canada are two of the largest producers of oil and Gas. Australia has the largest reserves of Uranium and is the largest exporter of natural gas as well as being the only country outside of China able to produce rare earth minerals. Australia also has the largest deposits of lithium and iron ore. China can't do without Australian iron ore and natural gas. Australia also has 1000 years of coal at its disposal, which it also sells to China. Australia has China by the balls, and Russia can't compete with that.

The matter of fact is usa, europe still buying Russian resources directly or indirectly through India or China, or using 3rd party countries, ordering for one country and re transiting it to themselves, or moving oil from shadow fleet to to another oil tanker. Talking about uranium ore itself is not useful. You need to enrich it multiple times in order to make it useful.

I hope one day India will be considered a "high income country" but in order for that to happen, the brain-drain needs to be reversed.

Brain drain is kinda good. Some indians return back to India to their families if they find a good job, and bring their expertise. ( Immigrant's Families aren't allowed residency or jobs)
India should become rich, brain drain will reverse.

VERY HAPPY to see Russia 🇷🇺 Rich again. I was very young in 1989 when Gorvachov destroyed USSR and condition of Russia was very bad. It’s this man of steel who uplifted the country and brought it to this level.
I feel India should become 1 single PM/party rule for 30-50 years to uplift it completely. And I don’t mean any other PM, but Sriman Modi ji
