That's the way I like it and I never get bored.
The lighthouses were built because the ships needed light to be able to pass through the channels. That was their primary function. Lighthouse keepers didn’t have many things for entertainment, so most of the time they would go out and study the nature and discover new things.

Visiting New Zealand last summer (well, winter for them) was an ABSOLUTE trip for me as a Canadian. The concept of there being no large predators was just so bizarre, and the proliferation of flightless birds that could ONLY happen in this isolated environment was fascinating and bewildering.
One of the interesting things I learned about was the HARDCORE VENDETTA New Zealanders have against predators like stoats, cats, and even rabbits (who attract the stoats). There are dedicated campaigns all over the country to eliminating predators from islands in the fjordlands and parts of the main islands, and they've had a fair amount of success so far, and a lot of citizen science involved!
My dad has been a lighthouse keeper at basically ever lighthouse in New Zealand before they were mostly converted to remote control. It's cool to think he probably lived there at one point too!
There was an episode of Citation Needed about this bird. Definitely worth finding and watching.
I love that Hank gives John equal billing as a "special guest" alongside Cory Doctorow, Ashley Ford, and Roman Mars even though they literally do a podcast together every week.

Genuinely felt like I was back at uni watching this (I studied Animal Behaviour & Genetics and did a whole module based around Lyle's Wren).

We have lots of islands like that here in NZ, and lots of birds that have lost the ability to fly. Because our only native mammal is a bat, birds filled their places, and the ones who could fly, thrived! On such island is Ulva Island/te wharawhara. Which is an island off an island (steward island), off and island (the South Island). It’s an awesome pest free sanctuary island, open to the public. You can see kiwi and lots of other birds you don’t see so much on the main land.

Those islands are collectively called the Marlborough Sounds and they're actually sunken and flooded river valleys. I've been through there a couple of times on the ferry between Wellington and Picton and it's beautiful
