🔮 I was playing Dreams from day one and I made tons of really good creations and it helped me become a game developer in real life but I felt like I was wasting my time because I couldn’t export or make money off my content. I spent an average of 6hours a day developing content… I’m certain that Sony is still saving Dreams and they’re gonna release it free as part of a public game engine for everyone to use and add games in the PlayStation store. we will see it come back for sure but it was just a test for now similar to PlayStation Home. PlayStation Home will be back and Dreams will be back and they will both be a native part of PlayStations Metaverse. It’s obvious… they wouldn’t waste money without a long range plan.
Making money and export abilities are huge reasons, it feel so pointless cause it really is game development or modeling work when it takes days, months or years. I think Roblox has like 50 million active players Dreams get maybe a thousand on a good day, Dreams could be competition if it wanted to tbh.
I left Dreams probably 8 months ago or so because at the end of the day, it just wasn’t worth it because no one played your games. I felt like the remaining player base was primarily people building games and not enough people online to play your games. So I would spend 10’s of hours building games, release it, and get like 5 plays. I did not come up with this idea, but I loved the idea of having Dreams free to every PlayStation plus user to PLAY, not build, that would still require purchase, but if every person could log on and play games, the endgame would be so much better knowing youre putting time into something people would actually play. It just felt kinda pointless towards the end. As others have said already too, 99% of Dreams games looked like Dreams games. It always had that fuzz/texture that was hard to evade without maxing thermo pretty quickly which is another issue. The thermo limits feel so limited, especially with no PS5 version. Especially when you bring the idea of monetization into it like some have. I love that idea, but I’ll be honest, there is not a single Dreams game I would pay money for. I’m not trying to be mean, there are numerous excellent games in Dreams. But there is truly nothing worth replaying week after week as a lot of indie games are. And I blame that on thermo. You can either have crazy gameplay and weak visual, or great visual and limited gameplay. There was always a balancing act which was tiresome. We’ve all seen the amazing things Badrobo made and such which are incredible, but I want GAMES made with that fidelity which is just not possible on Dreams, it’s always just showcases like that. It’s a tough thing, I loved Dreams but there doesn’t seem to be a big payoff anymore to using it compared to other software.
I agree with everything you said. Just the mix of not having multiplayer, lack of marketing, and honestly even big creators exposing the game, and only showing off memes instead of quality more than likely through a bunch of people off in my opinion. Hopefully one day it’ll all piece together
Multiplayer, PC and export abilities, as someone who heavily made stuff on Dreams, I would want to touch on another aspect as that folks hate to hear, there needs to be a way for Creators to make money otherwise for a lot of folks either life catches up or you get burnt out in general money would help MM and Creators, it's just how it is. If MM did something like Unreal engine and took a small royalties from games that sell MM would be doing good and so would Creators who spend months or years making a single game. To put into perspective for anyone who disagrees there's ways to make money from Minecraft servers and Roblox games I think Dream's is more powerful than both of those in many aspects.
As an OG dreams guy myself who's been in this community throughout it all, I can firmly can say it had huge potential but it lacked consistently. Lack of updates, lack of marketing. Still love dreams no matter what.
imo the biggest problem with Dreams was how the vast majority of content "looked" like Dreams. Other than the jank physics everything felt like it had that Dreams "fuzz" and there wasnt enough differences between the materials or physics used to differentiate between all the games/content.
I don't think thats the biggest issue, as there's things that looks realistic and not flecky not saying it isn't a issue, I think, it's more of not having multiplayer, creators not having an incentive to make things look good because it can't be treated like something professional when you can make money off it. For me there are games on Dreams I would straight up buy If I could and I know the months or even years it could take to make game, even in Dreams.
I agree for the most part. I still believe a factor in the "Dreams is a dissapointment" equation rests on semi-delusional indie game devs. They fall in love with the UI, the community, etc... and assume their super hard work will translate into larger/broader recognition... then it doesn't. This bums ALOT of devs out, and for obvious reasons. But IF you take Dreams for WHAT IT IS... a family-friendly platform to build/experience ideas and quirky dreams... and spend no more time Dreaming (play/dev) than you would playing other games... your appreciation for Dreams will change dramatically. I'm working hard on a team project as the lead programmer. But I'm not doing it for the accolades... it's just fun, and I learn new things all the time. There are exceptions of course. I believe Elca's project (and a few others) should be taken seriously now that cash is involved... but otherwise... devs should tone-down their expectations from Dreams. A Bethesda exec isn't likely to hire you for your Wario-Sonic Dreams game. Just have fun making things in this wonderful game.
It's still early OG when it truly blossoms oh my goodness remember 10 years is a long time to be back by a company when the 3D printing happens all that good stuff it's like a fine wine waiting for the cork to pop off
i'm enjoying dreams for what it is, I mean to be honest i only bought dreams just to sculpt 3D models and made some puppet most of the time just for my enjoyment. I actually having a blast just sculpting stuff away killing time like characters like my own OC's from paper sheets into 3D models and sculptures, also do my own challenges by doing fan made sculpture of my favorite characters in gaming or cartoon and such. never actually bought dreams to play other people creations so no online multiplayer is no big deal to me, don't get me wrong, i'm still playing stuff when I need to get a break from sculpting. though regardless, dreams still have problems, been telling Mm to fix these for ages but it was like talking to a wall. - why the ability to quickly scroll up and down do not works? it was so annoying that while texting a description or a comment you cannot quickly scroll back up to fix a typo or something so you had to hold L1 or R1 to go back on top or down Very Slowly. - an optional feature to remove the Imp only during creating and only shows the pointer. - rise the limit on every freaking thing, you had no idea how this current server of dreams is set way back in 2006.. character limit on texting is very short, descriptions, tags, comments, number of replies, storage.. I really thought you have the freedom to store stuff as long as you have the free space on your ps4/ps5 like in the LBP series, not only that but there's a limit on stored creation on your ps4/ps5 that's around 256 creation which is ridiculous! and don't get me starting on the graphics thermo. - add a four legged puppet base. - we asked for a transparent shapes but we got a transparent flick for painting. - add an age restrictions per-creation so we can avoid these drunk dreams moderators. - rise the stupid limit cap on painting! I think there was another video on it but the big reason is also the economy, adults don’t have time worth to devote to dreams. If dreams organized itself like a Videogame-TH-cam where people create and actually monetize their art, the sky is the limit to how big dreams could be.
I haven’t played dreams in a long time... I do think they’re trying to do stuff for the game but 1. They left early access way too early & 2. They have questionable priorities leading to a slow output for major features! (last major one I remember was VR and psvr 2 is coming out soon with entirely unique controllers...) Personally I feel they should either get a major shift in the way they’re working in the company or they should stop and work on something entirely new akin to tearaway! This game still feels like it’s in early access and we first heard of it when the PS4 was announced... 💀
I can live with single player only, multiplayer will require servers and stuff which add to the monthly budget. I'm more bummed out by not having a PC version. I just can't get used to the controller, I had great idea's for games but as a hardcore lifelong PC gamer and 3D modeler I just can't get into it.
I've been waiting for you to make a video like this! I've been checking for updates on Dreams quite often, hoping that somehow soon it would come to PC - I've literally had clients approach me to create 3D elements and scenes for their projects, only for me to respond with - "ahh, sorry the 3D creations I've created are locked inside of my ps4 in my garage/man-cave!" Dreams is incredibly fun to learn and use, but there comes a point for all creators when they want to take it seriously, and at that point, you start asking - how can I monetize this, and at that point, UE5 screams at you... I'm guttered for Dreams, it really felt like the artist's game-making tool we'd been waiting for...
One small thing I want is them to make a new UI for the main menu to be cleaner for newer players, I remember trying for my first time it feels messy in a sense. But the huger issues are definitely are what you highlighted in the video
I love Mm and Dreams is the only game I play. But I’ve said before, I think dreams big updates have taken too long and worry that it’s hurt Dreams from being what it should’ve been and got the recognition it deserves. I don’t doubt for one second, that everyone at Mm are working their butts off to make it happen. Just a shame that they’re a small studio and obviously and that’s why it’s taking longer. They said they’re moving to new servers quarter one next year, that will allow them to update things more regularly apparently. I still have hope and believe in Mm. They’ve massively expanded their team. I really hope that’s to work on Dreams and not some new game…
I'm glad you've addressed multiplayer issues. I've been watching your vids from the beginning before the game's release, speculating on the type of stuff you'd make and getting other creator speculations, etc. Yet, this all feels like a missed opportunity for Sony's Minecraft due to what seems like a lack of confidence. It should've went to PC and it should be easier to create games. I tried to create an fps but spending a few hours after trying to attach a camera to a manaquine before I even began the level design was nothing nothing but frustrating. I gave up. My story-driven Starship Troopers-esque was therefore canned. They made it non-user friendly, which is why it needs to come to PC. Ps, good to hear you back and God bless you for the wonderful content you out. Dreams has been a wasted opportunity and it's sad as it's obvious. But we live in hope. It's great to see you back btw :)
I bought Dreams day one, played the game and even started learning the tutorials etc.. I soon realise the effort and dedication required and I end-up spending the time on other projects. I recently got a PS5 and I had to buy the game again. It has changed and improved in the past 2 years and there is an amazing community behind it. I think been able to extract your own content could be a huge plus, as at least the art/music piece could be added to a separate project and you don't feel stuck in the platform. I think the sweet spot for dreams now are young folks, lots of free time with lots of motivation to learn and pursue a career related with the content you create, not necessarily game development. For me now, I want to have some fun playing other creations and mess around with the tool as a sandbox. I know it can teach me new things and that's what I am looking forward to it.
Surely its not done yet tho? Aren't they gonna patch it for ps5 and then you'll have a lot more power and memory to play with. There could still be a long back end for this game. It'll take years for creators to really make top level games, in collaboration with others, whilst they work and live their lives..
"whats holding them back?" They recently stated that they were rebuilding the server infrastructure hoping for a launch sometime next (early?) year. I would imagine if they were to release on PC then this server migration would have to be done before such a thing could happen. The user base of PS4/PS5 is expoentionaly smaller then that of pc users. My guess is that if they brought a PC version online today, the servers would just crumble. Add multiplayer on top? Nuclear metldown! That is not going to look good. They would have lost their chance to revitalise the brand. The amount of time/work to do after the fact?.. not possible. Even if it never coming to PC and they update with multiplayer, the same applies. If the servers cant cope and everything comes crashing down.. bang goes their reputation!
I was hyped for the game since it was first announced in 2015. LBP exposed me to the challenges and fun of creating and I saw the potential. When the beta dropped, I got it immediately and really enjoyed it. After learning the creative side, I started to lose interest as I figured out how important it is to have a multiplayer aspect to a game like this. I wasn’t always in multiplayer in LBP but that is what inspired me to continue to create. I don’t expect to come back to the game but I appreciate the occasional updates. Might change my mind if PC and multiplayer comes into play.
Great vid bro, You are absolutely right, but one thing is, I don't think mediamolecule is big enough to handle the level of Dreams, and get it to where it needs to be in a substantial amount of time. PC and multiplayer is coming, they just not big enough to continue to work on content for the game to stay exciting (Dreamscon) and work on multiplayer and PC update, without taking forever.
I feel like dreams shouldn't be on PlayStation exclusive, it should really be on PC, like having different blends and shaders Like seriously, even when it was strictly told that oh if you use our software well it's our creation, Unfortunately, it felt like a Nintendo Romcom with how they've controlled it, It should be free and taken to make something hype and amazing And Overall I love 3d, whether it's anime, movies, cartoons, you name it 4D whatever any little bit of 3d I can love and appreciate Because I really enjoy it, like the only freedom I can tell will wave into the sky that's really doing wonderful is the Roblox Mods and I don't say that often, like it's a really beautiful feeling that I hope the same way they did with Roblox They can do with Dreams overall
See, this is what I don't like. Why limit the things you can do in a videogame with the powerful technology you currently have to give us SO MUCH freedom. Why?
@@valleypanda dreams is way easier than those engines and you can do basically everything inside of dreams also the thermo would increase alot more because pc is more powerful
I've had this game since early access, and if you don't believe me my user is BoogalooJonez9. It's really annoying how ignorant MM is to the community. At launch we get all of these levels with literally 100,000 likes, and creations have gotten so much better now and it's rare to see 1,000 likes on a quality creation. Media Molecule has started making bad decisions ever since they did the audio import update. They gave us 15 seconds worth of recording which was horrible and it caused people to leave. Obviously now its up to 30 seconds but that's only if you reach level 100. Not only that but they started giving us completely useless updates left and right which we all act nice about it but deep down we know for a FACT that these updates are completely useless. Mm has spent more time making "megapenguin" than actually working on multiplayer. Maybe if they got up off their asses and added stuff people actually care about then maybe Dreams wouldn't be dead. What pisses me off too is that most TH-camrs or people who tried to showcase Dreams showed it way too early, showcased mediocre creations, or just the unfunniest memes known to mankind. I'm still making things on this game and I love it to death, but seriously... These developers have made some of the worst decisions for Dreams.
I make a tweet that said "make a new free game on the PS Store that is free and you can play every game that is on Dreams you want but not create" i hope they will be doing this it's would be cool
I have been saying this on their Twitter for like a year and a half, this game could be as big as roblox, but they’re doing jack shit to support their own game
Why is Mm so daft? Their studio has doubled in size in the past few years and still no mention of multiplayer. How did they think this game was gonna succeed without mp. Lbp would never be as big as it was without mp. Sigh... 😔
I think it needs more marketing and adding ps5 features (dual sense), plus adding psvr2 support and maybe also bundle it. Dream is amazing, it's just needs people to show other people what can it do.
Dreams should have been free for anyone to play from day one. That's the main problem to me. To see all those great creations basically being stuck in a bubble of the same 1000 people who log into the game on a regular basis is heartbreaking. Pay to create, free to play would be a huge and important step.
I was actually pretty excited about Dreams, but I ended up not buying it as soon as I'd liked, bc of Real-Life stuff. And now I don't really think that it'll be worth the effort creating something, for 1) Because people are slowly moving to PS5, 2) It's difficult and not so much meant to create games that include many levels/stages/story, etc... And that's the biggest problem for me. I'd really like to create more than just gaming prototypes and so on. I'd rather create a whole game. And I think that this is where Dreams & things like Game Builder Garage have their limits and turn off people from creating stuff
In the end, there's one thing people really want. Money. I've seen some talented Dreams creators become *really* upset when their beta evaluation projects or attempts at monetization through Media Molecule are ignored/ghosted by MM themselves. Multiplayer is good for the gaming community, but money is what's holding creators back.
Mm should have firmly shut the door on the idea of monetization from day one. Leaving it semi open has only left people with unrealistic expectations, either holding things back with hope for money or bitter that they havent been amongst the few chosen ones.
just do it like Steam where projects need to be put through review and maybe you pay a deposit/fee or whatever so that really bottlenecks the spammers and trolls from being able to flood the "Dream Store" with bullshit or shovelware
Seems like they are waiting for PSVR 2 launch to me. It will be the perfect time to add social multiplayer. Another great title where the Engine can run inside the Engine is a Open Source PC project called "Godot". It is still in heavy development but is moving in the right direction. The ideal of any of these systems is where we actually own our own creation - not some company - and Godot is the only thing I'm seeing attempting that. Most creation tools made accessible to people are kind of... dystopian.
I was a og dreams fan and I loved making the meta runner fangame series on dreams and no one excepts me as a fictionsexual/romantic and I was getting harassed over the littlest things ever and I lost my %#$@ on dreams and people keep mass reporting me on PlayStation all because I have feelings for a fictional character named Tari and they prevent equal rights for fictophiles like me I’ve seen other people ship themselves with fictional characters on dreams and they don’t get hate but why does it have to be me as a victim
The thermometer limit is just killing the creativity. The “fuzzy” texture look of things makes games visually unappealing and the physics are jánky. The fuzzy look can be fixed but it destroys the thermo
My take is that Sony considers Mm as a R&D studio and just don’t care about what they’re doing. One day everything is just going to stop and Mm will go on another project. I hope I’m wrong.
Hytale. I wouldn't say it's dreams like it's more Minecraft like but they have the concept of "everything we used to make the game is given to the players". Made a video on it on my channel
Agreed. Unfortunately, I don’t think Dreams has much hope left. First impressions matter, and due to the poor marketing and the bad representation Dreams got from the big creators, the general public already has a certain impression of the game and it’s pretty much impossible to change it afterwards. On top of that all the momentum is lost at this point. It would take massive overhauls and marketing campaigns to turn the tide.
Dreams lacks monetization, since you cannot sell assets or complete creations it will never be a true alternative to a real game engine. No sane person would spend time on Dreams when they could use Unreal / Unity / GoDot etc and eventually hit publish to start making actual money. As it stands, the best Dreams can be is a convenient console version of an All-In-One suite for learning how to make very simple single player games. a lack of ps5 update, support for mobile & PC, as well as multiplayer creation and multiplayer gameplay are also stopping Dreams from ever truly nailing lasting success.
If money isn't involved then no way they'll let this game give us *free* fun lol gotta pay for DLCs or battle passes nowadays if you want fun... That's how it is and it sucks. Or you can have messy games like GTA DE or Saints Row 2022 lol that's the negative part I hate from modern gaming the most. And I'm sure a lot of people hate this pattern with modern games as well... (My point is if videogames are holding back on awesome content like this, more than likely must be related to money).
I made some Dreams early on and I feel in love with the game creation and they really made some cool with Dreams, I agree that Dreams should 100% come to PC and add multiplayer, it feels like they just gave up on Dreams mainly because there is really no communication with the community except “here’s next Dreamcon” which is cool but at least have an explanation on why you don’t want Dreams to be on PC or have Multiplayer.

Agree 100%. The high detailed stuff that doesn’t look like fuzz destroys the thermometer in Dreams so nobody pushes out that high detailed stuff.
Luma noise off and 0% inner fleck shading lowers the flecky look on non-sharp surfaces. This works on sculpts that are super small in thermo cost too.
I don't think thats the biggest issue, as there's things that looks realistic and not flecky not saying it isn't a issue, I think, it's more of not having multiplayer, creators not having an incentive to make things look good because it can't be treated like something professional when you can make money off it. Just have fun making things in this wonderful game.
Another good exception would be adding to a portfolio: music, audio FX, 3D/2D art, animation, etc.
It's still early OG when it truly blossoms oh my goodness remember 10 years is a long time to be back by a company when the 3D printing happens all that good stuff it's like a fine wine waiting for the cork to pop off

though regardless, dreams still have problems, been telling Mm to fix these for ages but it was like talking to a wall.
I once did a really nice painting and was about to add more but then I learned there's a limit on colors too, the colors just ran out lol! so I had to remove stuff on the painting and release it.

Always felt the same way as what you said. Mark my words, if Dreams adds multiplayer, and PC compatibility, it'll be an overnight sensation.
dreams needs more hack n slash games
th-cam.com/video/d9TGK_Rk7To/w-d-xo.html
A thermo upgrade and multiplayer could definitely save this game but they aren't adding it for some reason

boom
I got the game when it came out played it a bit and went off it but now I’m realising it’s actually fun lol
One small thing I want is them to make a new UI for the main menu to be cleaner for newer players, I remember trying for my first time it feels messy in a sense. But the huger issues are definitely are what you highlighted in the video
I think that's a very fair point as well, if it's too complicated people won't know where to go to find things, and they'll feel too overwhelmed
It needs MP & It can't be laggy like LBP3, also they should've used the LBP naming (glad they didn't w/out mp)
With multiplayer and PC crossplay you’ll have Roblox or Minecraft level of popularity. Easy.
Yeah man but the only way that dreams can be more if we make it more
Nice to see you back 👍🏽
The best creators should come together andake an open world game
Not to mention split screen multiplayer. I always wished lbp had that as well tbh.
Still think that a well-made PlayStation All-Stars game made in Dreams could have helped draw more attention to it.
Physics is to janky to make a game like that
@@standarsh2186 I don't know. Somebody made a Smash Bros-style game and it looked pretty good.
They didn't advertise or publicize it enough, should have been marketed as a service somewhat similar to Netflix or Spotify
At least now we can play with friends through shareplay. They really should do a lobby where each person can pick a dream to "queue"
It’s been 3 years and half actually if you count the early access 💀
I feel like dreams shouldn't be on PlayStation exclusive, it should really be on PC, like having different blends and shaders
Like seriously, even when it was strictly told that oh if you use our software well it's our creation,
Unfortunately, it felt like a Nintendo Romcom with how they've controlled it,
It should be free and taken to make something hype and amazing
And Overall I love 3d, whether it's anime, movies, cartoons, you name it 4D whatever any little bit of 3d I can love and appreciate
Because I really enjoy it, like the only freedom I can tell will wave into the sky that's really doing wonderful is the Roblox Mods and I don't say that often, like it's a really beautiful feeling that I hope the same way they did with Roblox
They can do with Dreams overall
See, this is what I don't like. Why limit the things you can do in a videogame with the powerful technology you currently have to give us SO MUCH freedom. Why?
Even if it did come to pc, you would have to deal with stuff like unreal engine 5 and blend and so many other competitors.
I’ll never fade MM. But everything you said is valid. Multiplayer alone with solve a lot
I am making a game that I wanted to use PS5 features for. I agree
The thermometer limit is just killing the creativity. The “fuzzy” texture look of things makes games visually unappealing and the physics are jánky. The fuzzy look can be fixed but it destroys the thermo
R.I.P dreams
My take is that Sony considers Mm as a R&D studio and just don’t care about what they’re doing. One day everything is just going to stop and Mm will go on another project.
I hope I’m wrong.
I don’t care about multiplayer at all but I’m mad about Sony who just didn’t ad the game at all
You just NEED to be able to export content at a point.
I just want to play with my friends like in littlebigplanet man
I don't want pc version at all, they have Unreal, Unity. But I want PS5 version and multiplayer.
what's that dreams-like think you mentioned? Haito... hi toe?
Hytale. I wouldn't say it's dreams like it's more Minecraft like but they have the concept of "everything we used to make the game is given to the players". Made a video on it on my channel
Could've, would've, should've
Maybe they will come with an updated version once PSVR2 drops
Facts
What is hyto or phyto what you speak of?
*Should've
I made some Dreams early on and I feel in love with the game creation and they really made some cool with Dreams, I agree that Dreams should 100% come to PC and add multiplayer, it feels like they just gave up on Dreams mainly because there is really no communication with the community except “here’s next Dreamcon” which is cool but at least have an explanation on why you don’t want Dreams to be on PC or have Multiplayer.
Oh no, everything is good and gravy...
When it gets multiplayer and comes to PC.
🙏🏾
Anyone doing an e.honda?
It's a damn shame, but I still love Dreams. So much potential. Better marketing campaign would have been good, also PC would be nice.
dreams for pc would be sick im waiting since launch of dreams for a pc port :/
shoulda been put on pc...
Agreed
They need to make a sequal on the PS5
With multiplayer and PC crossplay you’ll have Roblox or Minecraft level of popularity. Easy.
