This version of Better Off Dead is as good as the studio version and Ray Cooper is so entertaining!!

It's good, but the other voices and instruments on the studio recording add another dimension and depth to this great song.

OMG. This is F’ing fantastic. That voice. Young Elton with blue eye shadow. Mischievous Ray. And Russian people, who look like Rusdian people do in my mind.

His eye makeup looks quite fetching. Lush eyelashes. Not to mention the great piano playing and beautiful voice. I think he was struggling with his weight here (I can identify).

I had just turned 18 that year when Elton and Ray brought this show to the USA (Back in the USSA, as the tour was called). A friend and I got tickets for the show in West Lafayette, Indiana, and we were absolutely mesmerized during the performance. Still the best concert I've ever been to (by far).

I saw them on "this" tour in NY (but in the USA). I have to say that Ray Cooper gave me the creeps---Hannibal Lector vibes (Elton sounded like he had had a little too much to drink), and when they played this song, someone in the audience knew all the words and acted out the whole thing. It floored me, because I'd never heard it before. Since then, it has become my favorite Elton John song to sing. He has so many other great songs, but this one is SO FUN TO SING!!

There was a face on a hoarding that someone had drawn on
And just enough time for the night to pass by without warning
Away in the distance there's a blue flashing light
    Someone's in trouble somewhere tonight
As the flickering neon stands ready to fuse
The wind blows away all of yesterday's news
Well, they've locked up their daughters and they battened the hatches
Siempre pudieron encontrarnos pero nunca pudieron atraparnos
They always could find us but they never could catch us
Through the grease-streaked window of an all-night cafe
Vimos cómo se llevaban a los arrestados
We watched the arrested get taken away
And that cigarette haze has ecology beat
As the whores and the drunks filed in from the street
'Cause the steams in the boiler, the coals in the fire
Si preguntas cómo estoy, solo diré inspirado
If you ask how I am then I'll just say inspired
If the thorn of a rose is the thorn in your side
Entonces estás mejor muerto si aún no has muerto
Then you're better off dead if you haven't yet died
'Cause the steams in the boiler, the coals in the fire
Si preguntas cómo estoy, solo diré inspirado
If you ask how I am then I'll just say inspired
If the thorn of a rose is the thorn in your side
Entonces estás mejor muerto si aún no has muerto
Then you're better off dead if you haven't yet died
Mejor muerto, mejor muerto, mejor muerto
Better off dead, better off dead, better off dead
Mejor muerto, mejor muerto, mejor muerto, mejor muerto
Better off dead, better off dead, better off dead, better off dead
    Mejor muerto
    Better off dead
    Este próximo se llama "Escritura"
    This next one's called "Writing"
It's about sitting around, picking your nose for two or three years
Waiting for angle but hammering through one of your songs
Pero de hecho nunca lo hace
But in fact it never does
Really shows you how good the song's worth, uh
    Perdón por el ángulo
    Sorry about the angle
De todos modos, la canción llamada "Writing"
    Anyways, the song called "Writing"
(Uno, dos y uno, dos, tres, cuatro)
