On my bucket list as well as the Miho Wase, currently have Owari and Algerian Clementine as well as oranges like the Brean Tarocco, Moro, and Sanguinelli
Very nice profile of the Shiranui / Sumo "mandarin" tree. Can mandarins be grafted onto Eureka lemon rootstock? Like avocados, I like how you've got two significantly different varieties so that anybody can distinguish between the varieties. I've tasted them before and they ARE very large and have a unique texture and good flavor. And they are roughly as expensive as avocados in some of the stores as well. Thanks, Greg. 👍
Hey Greg, shiranui seems very similar to Mineola tangelo, which is a grapefruit tangerine hybrid, except the texture of the juice vesicles and it has some seeds as well.
Hi Phil, That's a great comparison. I just went and ate a Minneola to have it fresh in my mind. They both have bumps on top, of course, but the Minneola has a darker rind. The Shiranui peels more easily. You are spot on about the juice vesicles and seeds. Also, the Minneola is overall much juicier, and it has a tangerine flavor in it that the Shiranui doesn't have. You know that classic tang of a tangerine? Minneola has it, but I don't taste it in Shiranui.
@@gregalderdotcom absolutely, Minneola has a tangy flavor and is more suitable for juicing since it turns into a total mess, while trying to seperate the segments.
It's funny that the dekopon trees I see all lack micronutrients, mine here in Brazil really lack calcium, manganese and magnesium and whenever I watch a video the symptoms are the same.
This Shiranui tree is too young to say, but so far it has had consistent production. My Gold Nugget has alternated a couple times, but sometimes, curiously, it has had back-to-back years of very good production.
i have this grafted onto a mature acidless lime tree. Fruit is enormous; one segment is almost as big as the palm of my hand. tree is very vigorous and super productive. i find the flavor to be ok. not better than the TDE's or Gold Nugget. Actually, Dekopon doesnt top my top 10 list. but i have only had it for 3 years. maybe the fruit quality will improve
Greg gave a very accurate description of the flavor and size of the fruit. I have gold nugget and most other top tangerines and I would put Shiranui in the top four. It's a unique flavor that's amazing among other tangerines so if yours was not even in the top 10 then there's something wrong with your tree or your bud wood or you just picked it at the wrong time.
Picked Dekopon in February/March. Brix of the fruit was 15.5-17. Flavor was sweet/tart. Mine was very reminiscent of grapefruit which i dont find special. i found a seed or two in each fruit. For me, #1 is Kishu #2 Shasta/Tahoe Gold, #3 Washington Navel #4 Gold Nugget #5 Lane Late #6 Okitsu or Xie Xian #7 Cara Cara #8 Boukhobza #9 Page #10 Nules Clementine #11 USDA 88-2 #12 Tango #13 Tarocco #14 Owari #15 Pixie....Still waiting to taste Yosemite Gold that i planted last year

@@randomguy2246 preference for flavor is highly subjective. Kishu mandarin would be at the bottom of my list of citrus. I only keep the tree around because some people like it. In my opinion Algerian Clementine and W Murcott blow Kishu out of the water in flavor. They have a much more rich and complex flavor in comparison to Kishu.
Hi Greg! I heard the Shiranui is difficult to grow. Is this true? I live in Arizona. What are the challenges in growing this tree? I hope to hear from you as I am looking to buy this tree.
I don't find it difficult to grow in my location, inland Southern California. It does as well as my other mandarins and oranges. The only challenge I have encountered is that it makes too much fruit some years so I have to thin some. The fruit get big and will break branches or expose to sunburn.
Very timely video for me. I was just looking into trying to find the “Sumo” tree. Thanks for the overview, Greg.
Thank You Greg Love this post
Shiranui / Dekopan is one of our favorites as well. Beautiful looking trees!
Wow! So amazing & beautiful mandarin tree
Thanks a lot for all your sharing.
Love it. Can't wait for mine to mature to make that amazing fruit.
Thanks for sharing your experience with this citrus tree. I just brought one and I didn’t know much about it.
beautiful tree and fruits. king of all orange/mandarin
On my bucket list as well as the Miho Wase, currently have Owari and Algerian Clementine as well as oranges like the Brean Tarocco, Moro, and Sanguinelli

I grafted Washington naval Orange onto a Lisbon lemon and I just ate an orange from that graft yesterday.

@@gregalderdotcomif you had to choose between sumo, gold nugget and tango, which would you go with?

Hi Greg, is there any chance you have tips on how to grow these in pots/ containers?
Also, would you know if I could graft them onto a Cara cara orange tree?
Any idea where I could get this variety?
Greg is the Shirenui or kishu tree effected by the cold where you are
No, I get no cold damage to those trees where I am.
