    Hey!! I Love your tree. I bought a Satsuma Owari 1.5 months ago and planted it in the ground within 2-3 days. Its in a full sun location, have fertilized it once and been watering 2-3 times a week. Its almost 3 ft high. My problem is it has not grown even a single new leaf, also some leaves are starting to show little yellowish color. What could I have done wrong? Please help!! I really want this tree to grow. Also I m in zone 8b so we get good amount of sun.

      Don't be surprised if the tree doesn't grow a ton the first year or two as it gets established. A couple thoughts: 1) A newly planted tree can sometimes experience "shock" as its roots are somewhat disturbed during planting. this is normal, and next season will be a better indicator of its health. 2) Citrus pushes out most of its new tender growth in the spring. It's possible it's already done this. 3) Consider cutting back the frequent watering to a deeper watering once a week (or twice during the hottest weeks over 90+) . I hope this helps!

    Love satsuma. But I hear that they are going to grow big. How can you keep them as 5 feet by 5 feet? Thanks for you reply in advance.

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any tree can be pruned to your desired height/size (though sometimes at the expense of some fruiting). Citrus can be a little more forgiving because they are naturally a shrub/hedge (that often get trained as single trunk trees). If unpruned size is truly an issue, finding citrus grafted onto UltraDwarf "Flying Dragon" rootstock should keep the tree around 6X6 at maximum size.

      @@TheBusyGardener Thanks very much for your quick reply. If they are not dwarf , can we keep citrus real small by pruning? For example, if a citrus can grow up to 30 feet, by pruning, how small can we keep it? Right now, I have a spacing 8 by 18 feet? I love citrus, especially satsuma, pummelo, kumquat and blood orange. After watching you video, I really want to plan some citrus myself. Can I plant all of them?

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Plant them all! You can keep them as a low hedge, in groups of 2-3 planted to a hole (see my high density planting vid), or single trees you allow to take more space. In my multiplanting vid, you'll notice I have 9 trees in an 8x18 foot space. A couple things to note: I would get dwarf/semidwarf trees (should top out at 12ft on their own). Also, get those whose canopy is natural and HASN"T been pruned into a "tree" shape with all the lower branches removed. Think $25 young trees at home depot as the type you're looking for.

    The leaves on my “satsuma” mandarin are huge! Is that normal? Also when do they flower?

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All of our citrus flower in late winter. Leaf size isn't something to necessarily worry about!

      @@TheBusyGardener ok thank you! Also is there a difference between a satsuma mandarin and a owari satsuma mandarin or are they the same thing? Oh and the leaves hang low in a weeping habit, is that normal or doesn’t it need something?

    Which is best between Satsuma and Clementine for flavour and sweetness?

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't done a side-by-side between Satsuma and Clementines, unfortunately. Of the fruit I have here, I solidly prefer "Gold Nugget" to "Satsuma" and "Honey", but all three are great.

      How long ago did you buy it? Is it a young tree? Mine is 4 years old, and has really begun producing well in the last couple years. Have you fertilized it? Planted in the ground? Getting enough sun?

      The Busy Gardener I got it 2 months ago at a plant store so maybe I need to be a little patient but it’s growing so many little baby satsumas but their turning yellow and some have little brown idk if it could be that it’s been raining really heavy here lately

      @@biancaa740 Yeah, be patient. :). Citrus will naturally drop a bunch of fruit, even if you had tons of flowers, ESPECIALLY on an immature tree. Hang in there.
