      Found it disturbing. Some wavy(or shaped like letter S) bookshelves look nice, but that just looks like it's about to fall over.

    Hotels in Ukraine are very cheap, safe and nice. I have been in Ukraine 6X and no problem at all in Ukrainian hotels. Very nice morning food, no problem with usual bank debit card eighter. Offcourse im a volunteer and i do have many contacts developed in Ukraine and as an estonian its much easier for me to figure everything out.

    Hey Olga/Olia tell everyone , don't forget to go to customer service at your bank before you leave where you live and make sure they know that you are leaving the country and make sure to make the proper arrangements with them so they don't suspend or cancel your bank card as soon as you try to use it outside the country. You guys have a great new year.

    Good advice all around. I have never had any of the problems you mentioned in Ukraine, but that is because I did my due diligence before coming. I learned a few phrases in Russian. I contacted my cell phone carrier prior to my trips to make sure my phone would work. I contacted my bank to make sure my debit card was cleared for use overseas and did the same with a credit card as back up. I read up that much of Ukraine operates on cash, so I made sure I brought a reasonable amount of cash with me. I also made sure that I did not advertise that I was carrying lots of American money. I arranged for a hotel through a booking agency and arranged for transportation to and from the airport with the hotel. I did not leave the more common and public areas until I was with someone I could trust so I didn't end up in places I should not be.
    My point is that a little bit of preparation goes a long way. But it is also nice to know that if I run into difficulty I can contact you. A nice service to offer.

    Olga. Those are all very good points. ))
    I want to add: It is always best to know the alphabet and some words of the language in the country that you are planning to visit.
    Another piece of advice is to look at google maps and go to the road view. Look around on the main roads in the area that you plan to visit. That in itself is a major benefit. This gives you an idea of where things are and helps reduce the overwhelming feeling of being lost. ... It is an awesome feeling when someone asks where something is and you are able to tell them despite the fact that you don't live there.))

    This video will save many people a lot of trouble. I was guilty of not checking my credit card and phone service before coming to the Ukraine, too, but luckily everything worked fine and I did not have any problems at all. But I understand that not everybody is that lucky, unfortunately. My recommendation would be to learn at least some basic Russian or Ukrainian. That will make it a lot easier to get help if you need it.

    When you see Bart Simpson and his comrades around the Christmas Tree in Independence Square do not take a photo. The moment you do they all surround you and demand a hefty payment and if you resist your life is in danger. I had to hand over everything in my wallet. But i am Australian and we don't put up with shit like that. I rested for a half hour in my hotel room above the square then returned to the scene of the crime with a bunch of policemen. They quickly rounded up these Loony Tunes and I got my money back. I let them know in my best Australian what I thought of them; I will leave that to your imagination.

    Very good advice. A lady arranged for me to stay in an apartment in Bucha, Kiev. She overcharged me and just wanted me to buy clothes for her. No one else spoke English in the apartments I was in. I stopped buying her clothes and in the future, will only stay in a hotel in a foreign language country.

    I have stayed at many apartments in and around Kiev which were arranged by Ukrainian woman with no problem at all around $35 US per night for brand new apartments. The issue with the credit card and phone has happened to me several times even if I tell the bank first. You must have cash when you arrive at airport, just in case. I eventually contacted the bank with internet, but the time difference was also an issue, took two days to clear cards. Now I take several cards with high limits and plenty of cash. I have traveled to outlying areas in Ukraine, but only with a Ukrainian and had no problem. Uber works fine in Kiev and I love it, better than private taxis for sure. One issue you did not mention is lost luggage. On my first trip to Kiev the airline lost my luggage, no one at the airport spoke English. I finally got my luggage but it took three days! Pack necessary items in a carry on, for sure. In case you're curious, I had thankfully done just that.

    Olga,you are so right,better safe than sorry. I went to Bucharest enroute to India and they put me in a hotel for one night. It was just after the murder of Chaucescu I was having breakfast in the hotel and bunch of men were coming to me asking me to change Dollars,but I did not want to change because stores were all empty nothing to buy. I refused five or six people .Then my conscience kicked in,I was telling myself ,Sury you live in NY and you think you are a big shot and do not want to help people .Then I said next hustler comes I will help. Then this guy came and told me ,sir you do not have to change Dollars,but I am going to NY next month and I have some twenty dollar bills,would you give me a hundred dollar bill,I said no problem ,I took out a hundred dollar bill from my jacket pocket and gave it to him and his five twenty dollar bills was in my left hand and he looked at the hundred dollar bill and said can you change this bill because it is little torn in the side. In America torn Bill is no problem.Anyway I was little irritated with him,I put my hand in my jacket pocket and gave him a hundred dollar bill.Suddenly I am surrounded by five or six people and they said you are exchanging money and we will arrest you ,we are Romanian police, I was totally pissed and told them I was not changing dolllars just giving him a bigger denomination bill, I was so angry I told that Romanian or middle eastern crook ,here is your twenty dollar bills and he took the money and scrammed and those police people left ,they were all part of a group of crooks and then I realized that stupid me returned his twenty dollar bills but my hundred dollar bill was with that bastard.

    For the credit card issue. If this happens use your smart phone to connect to the wifi at the airport or a cafe. You can then access your mobile banking. You can also make a call to your bank using wifi.
    Also, be careful of demonstrations. Some, especially those by the far right can be violent. Avoid large gatherings, especially of young guys in military style uniforms. These do happen in the center of Kiev, so just be aware. Your embassy will often issue advisories for this, so check their website and the local news.
    Lastly, my experience is that police in Ukraine are not at all like police in the USA. Most are not overly helpful and of you are the victim of a crime, reporting to the police doesn't really help. If it was a serious crime, report it to the embassy as they usually have better channels to get it addressed.

    So I am going to Ukraine in February to meet this girl I have known for 6 months now. She say she can fix place for me and get cheaper price and all. Should I worry about this? She also always say no if I want buy her anything so I assume its good sign but what you think?

    If you are going to travel 3,000 to 6,000 miles to see her in Ukraine.....
    She should at least be able to travel 200 km to meet you in Kiev...
    Tell her you will cover her train ticket... most it will cost is around $25...
    If not... she is not for real......

    So, I am coming from USA to Kiev to meet a fantastic girl. We struggle with WRITTEN language, but not speaking. She is coming to Broyspil to gather me. I want to bring her a gift. I found a small, inexpensive necklace that I want to give to her. It represents her, shattering the mythical glass ceiling for women. It cost $62 USD. Is it advisable to give it to her when I meet her? I sure would like to. If not, what is more appropriate? I certainly can't take flowers on the plane!

    I want to be on that Nat Geo show "Locked up Abroad", in a Ukrainian prison. I think it would be the quickest and most effective way for me to accelerate my Ukrainian language learning, and I'm also certain that in the correct prison situation, my listening comprehension will also improve dramatically.

    Is there a (transformer?) that would allow a U.S. cellphone/smart phone, to charge in Ukraine?

    • @davidnull5590
      @davidnull5590 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most American cell phones will not work in Ukraine - the *CDMA* type will not work. GSM phones with a SIM card will work. Check your phone type, Iphones can be either type. You can buy a SIM card and inexpensive prepaid service at the airport, Kyivstar is a good cell provider (kyivstar.ua/en/mm). To charge a phone you will need a charger with a EURO plug (220 volt), available on Amazon and Ebay. Don't try to use a converter with a phone/laptop charger, there is too much risk of killing the device. Most of Ukraine seems to operate with payment cards from PrivatBank (owned by the Ukrainian government, 2,500 branches in the country, 320 branches in the Kiev region alone) seems to be the most widely used and trusted. I'm wary of using my U.S. Visa card in Ukraine. PrivatBank has special features to secure the card in Ukraine by tying your cellphone to payment verification. There is a bank branch at the airport. en.privatbank.ua/individuals/privatbank-payment-cards/

    Problem with Ukraine is that Ukraine is considered a corrupt country in terms of banking and practically every bank in the United States will raise a red flag for possible money laundering anytime money needs to be transferred to a bank in Ukraine or a credit card needs to be used there as well as ATM. I suggest coming to Ukraine with cash and finding a legitimate currency exchange where you can convert your USD to Ukrainian Hrivnya.

      Yes, this is true while actually Ukraine is not the most famous country in money laundering))

      Romello Cox sadly most people don’t accept lgbt people, people are ignorant and afraid because under communism there was no mention of LGBT people/rights; th-cam.com/video/QYzccu5tn7A/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/lok0js_fXLU/w-d-xo.html , th-cam.com/video/u1QQGNtSskI/w-d-xo.html , th-cam.com/video/3XAgevGq1Ug/w-d-xo.html , BUT they’re beginning to have pride marches th-cam.com/video/vhOkagxxJg4/w-d-xo.html hopefully that’ll make people open to lgbt

    • @Samchocolate11
      @Samchocolate11 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Valissimo So as Ukrainians instead of mass migrating to the west (and South America + Poland + Czech Republic) why don’t you do anything about your homophobic locals? Why don’t you try to change their views?

    • @valissimo780
      @valissimo780 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      First of all! I came back to Ukraine after graduating in Holland. Secondly, I am not homophobic, but I am religious, so that's def not the topic I would like to raise local's awareness on.
      So yeh, I think it's not feasible to generalize ;)

    Hi Olga! Great videos! I just looked at the language map and it shows that in western and center Ukraine they can speak and understand ukraineian language more than russian. Is it true? I hope that its true, because i have to be honest, i like ukraineian much more.
    I want to learn ukraineian language.
    Your videos are good help! :)
    So do they speak ukraineian in Kiev too?
    Im hungarian and i want to travel in Ukraine so thats why i want to learn. I know in the very West there are a few villages that speak hungarian, but i need the language that i can use the whole time.
    Like the western and center.
    I want to communicate with locals.
    Is ukrainian the way to go?
    Thank you.
    Have a good one.
