It's strange how many things in this April Fool's Update seemed to be based on Extra Utilities. Floater can be placed like an Angel Block, Cursed Earth equivalent, Double Compressed Block, ectara. Wonder if all of this is meant to references mods in general, after all grappling hooks and reskinned dimensions are fairly common.
This might be the most hilarious April Fools update. Some of this stuff is genius, and, as usual, was probably so much fun to think up. (There's the mysterious frying table.)
I feel the excessive need to say that in the french version, the potato dirt is called "Terre de pomme", while potato is "Pomme de terre" directly translating to apple of earth
I love how the potato's head that's talking to you tilts back and forth like a Hotline Miami cutscene. The player is just slowly going insane from consuming a poisonous potato and is going to start hearing a phone ringing in a few hours..
This seems like the sort of thing the Hermits should tackle as a group in a livestream together for charity to create the most beautiful (revolting) build. Starting out with six hours, all donations of a certain amount will lengthen the time you all play it. I'd love to see what sort of monstrosity pops up and whether any hermits would be able to complete all the achievements for this update in that time.
Reminds me of the time Grian and his friends played the Vote Update. I tell ya man, these april fools updates are criminally underrated for multiplayer.
This strikes me as a combination of ideas they had for the Trails update, an end update, and a potential Skulk dimension. There are random pathways and potato-wood platforms naturally generating (literal trails). The grappling hook would make end traversal much more fun. A new block that is semi-hostile (possible new skulk variant block?). The potato wood also somewhat resembles recolored/re-textured bamboo, maybe they had plans at one point to add a bamboo village? The potato boss also seems like a theoretical new boss mob idea. Imagine changing the context to fighting a skulk boss that has absorbed the "souls" of so many mobs and you have to beat it by defeating the "ghosts" of what it has absorbed. I know they tend to go wacky with the April fool's update but this seems like it has way more of a beta test feel to it than just being for silly laughs
Things I noticed while playing not seen in the video: The slab fish drop dents, part of a trident. Powerful potatoes are naturally occurring. Water is poisonous in certain biomes. Poisonous mash potatoes give the sticky buff when stood on, allowing the player to climb walls. Potato sheep can be sheared for their peels which come in whatever color they were. The grappling hook base can be found in a starter chest which is full of farming equipment.
Potatification on tools drops potatoes and poisonous potatoes when breaking blocks. Most blocks in potato dimension are broken with a hoe. The quardian slab mobs actually have spawners under the boss chamber. Also potato villagers can have jobs. Thank you for an amazing video ❤ There were loads of things to discover and thanks to you I picked up some cool ones. Hope that you can read this comment and learn something from my exploration.
These joke updates usually have a few prototypes features in them that we get in a real update later. I am thinking that the moving structures with proper player collision could be something they add in, at least for custom map usage.
I'm wondering if this shows off any other new features, but can only come up with a very short list. - smoothly moving structures - grappling hook (may have been implemented as a proof of concept in case the crab won the mob vote) - new tree generation (looks like Acacia with changed parameters) - placing blocks in mid-air ... I don't see any clear planned feature that would benefit from this though - unless they do add the crab.
Exactly. I went through last years update, and some of the features seem to have been added or were hinted at during the april fools update. Here are a few: The copper spleaves look very similar copper grates, the pickaxe block and place block might have hinted at the crafter, the void potion might have hinted at the ominous potion, and the big and small potions might have hinted at the new effects we got.
The dialogue with the floating potato head at the start is def them testing implementing a traditional game tutorial / adding functionality to allow mapmakers to do it. And MegaSpud - code for bosses where you have to kill their minions before they drop their shield.
I mean they have been really leaning into exploration so what better way to explore than something like an air ship mechanic. Plus it would give an alternative to elytra's if they ever want to adjust those.
A lot of these seem to refer to an old mod called extra utilities it had compressed cobblestone (up to octuples) angel blocks you could place in the air like the floatato and more Grappling is also something you fjnd in a number of mods and was inspired by fortresscraft's grappling mechanic (behaves the same and looks similar with a green beam) there is probably even more references I missed
In the coloseum there are actually spawners underneath the center under the unbreakable blocks, you can only get to the spawners by following a maze underwater
@@Kodaiva I hear more complaints about them not adding new items and just adding more variants. @@theonebman7581 I wanted to say no they aren't, but it is really hard to think of something better.. maybe Avocados? But potatoes are more accessible which plays a role into the ranking too.. hmm Potatoes have resistance starch which is great, but they have lectins, oxalates, alkaloids, phytic acid (which some is good, and they don't have a ton), and lots of starch. Not a lot of vegetables you can solely survive off of like you can potatoes, though, and those bad chemicals can be lowered by cooking to get them to acceptable amounts, but if you're eating them everyday that is a lot of all of them while not getting the cleansing benefits of other vegetables and even fruits. Hard to say, really.
Mojang was testing the custom worlds thing on previous april fools (god its like 3-4 years by now isnt it), then we got a portal looking ring in ancient city, now they make straight up new dimension on april fools. There is definetly some hinting of future big update.
I’m really glad that I experienced this update blind and in survival, there were a lot of things that you didn’t understand, that I knew, like how the beams for the grappling hooks are obtained by the potato guardians. And making the grapplers and elytra myself.
I started this blind in survival too, but haven't interacted much with the slab guardians yet, and I'm still trying to figure out how grappling hooks are made, what I'm supposed to do with toxic resin, and how to find amber... I'm taking an awful long time to explore stuff, haha, but I stumbled upon the boss dude while randomly caving instead of finding him with the potato eyes.
Toxifins and Plaguewhales honestly seem like betas for an actual in-testing mob, be it reworks or a cousin species to the guardians. even if this isn't the case and nothing comes of it, i think it's safe to assume the modding community will pick them up, un-potato them and make them into a mod of their own.
A lot of these features feel like in-development items and mobs for 1.21 1.22, and I really hope we see things like the grappling hook un-potato-ified later on.
@@jamwrightiamThr Wither already has a notable phase when it gets its projectile shield at half health. They also summon 2-3 wither skeletons on half health on Bedrock.
which is because, to make a block you need 9 potatos (9), then 9 of those to get the compressed block (9^2), 9 of those for double compressed (9^3) or in general for n compressed block you need 9^(1+n) potatos so quad is 4th conpressed meaning 9^(4+1)=9^5=potatos then 64 of that meaning (9^5)*64 = 59,049*64 = 3,779,136
@aceae4210 Your explanation and the 9^(1+n) is excellent. -But- -the- (5^9)** -isnt- -correct-. ** he wrote (9^5) but my app which is set to RTL is putting it as (5^9). Stupid right!
You want to use regular potato oil, not poisoned one, for lubrication. Lubricated items when thrown slide a distance linearly dependant on lubrication level. You can put lubricated items into the refinery recursively, to get higher lubrication levels. Lubrication level is a 32bit integer, it's a component, so can be modified in for example /give command.
p = 9^n p potato count, n potato block tier. 9, 81, 729, 6561, 59049. One stack of blocks p = 64 * 9^n 576, 5184, 46656, 419904, 3779136. seems to be correct.
there's actually a trapdoor in the colosseum floor that leads into a weird 1-tall maze (reminiscent of the potato door texture!) that just has four spawners for the slab guardians in it and nothing else also if you trigger more than one floatater at once the speed goes up, you can use /fill commands to aim a bunch of observers at a big square of them, I tried up to 7x7 which zoomed off pretty quickly!
The boss's name and the staff it drops are both likely references to World of Warcraft. Jaraxxus, Eredar Lord of the Burning Legion and Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian.
The "this is not a potato" painting and the one with a potato covering a man's face are both based on famous paintings by René Magritte, specifically they're based on "The Treachery of Images" and "The Son of Man" respectively.
it takes 3,779,136 poisonous potatoes to make a stack of quadruple compressed poisonous potato blocks, at 59,049 just to make ONE. filling up a shulker box with stack of those quadruple compressed blocks, and then filling a double chest with those shulker boxes, you can fit a total of 5,509,980,288 poisonous potatoes in one double chest.
The Zeppelin Mod is finally back, but from an april fools version hahahahaha I really want to make boats, airplanes, and rockets with that, it's just so cool
Tater Starcher AKA Spudermash They even included potato vines so you can swing around just like him! EDIT: And a sticky effect allowing you to climb walls. I think we have our winner here!
To me it seems like this was a hidden test for some features coming in an end update: Floating island biomes terrain generation, floating blocks, "engine" blocks, grappling hook all seem to fit perfectly into an end update. And the block that is shooting at mobs also does not seem to fit into a potato update, but much better as a feature in an end update.
@@StAngerNo1 i'm pretty sure the floating island generation is just the end generation reused, but yeah that stuff seems like it would fit in an end update
Played this in survival with my sister. She discovered that if you put several of the talking potatoes in a chest and leave them, they will auto add paper with messages beside them inside the chest. The messages will change different times you open the chest. Some of the messages will even say the user's name along with text. Some of the messages are very creepy. A very cool touch to the snapshot.

ive noticed in the past theyve used april fools snapshots to tease mechanics and tech theyve been working on so hopefully well see some kind of grappling hook or block mover soon
This definitely seems like a blueprint for a new dimension, they're probably tinkering with some features in this April Fools update so they can later add it on in some way or another.
But they could really give some texture love to the old mobs like cows, pigs and chickens. This proves how easy you can put together new textures, it wouldn't even be hard to surpass the old ones based on how they aged.
@@lolz3895 you'd be surprised how many people disagree. Look at how good the response to the new dogs were, people literally care more about new dog colors than the armadillo or the armor.

Once again, an April Fools update with a few things we would really want to see in Vanilla! The floating blocks and motor are really cool, it makes me wonder why they havent actually added airships to minecraft yet! Also that exhaust thing is similar to something i mentioned on one of Tangos videos, basically a box fan looking thing that can blow players, mobs and items in whatever direction you place it in! Could also work work with pushing airships around too :)
April fools snapshots use code from stuff they’re already working on, so we probably will get something similar in the next update or the one after that
To everyone saying “oh this is more content than the real updates” For one, it’s only on Java they don’t need to consider bedrock let alone controllers or mobile phones, for two it ignores all of the established design principles and doesn’t “fit” into normal minecraft, doesn’t need to be balanced against it and doesn’t need extensive debugging. Finally, most of the content is recycled and builds off other major updates. It takes a lot less time to change out the blocks in a bastion structure and add a few blocks when the ground work is laid out for you
Agreed. Even stuff like the potato altar thing- does it spawn everybody at the same location like the End or is there a conversion system like with the Nether or does the potato world have corresponding potato altars on the other side? What about going back? Is it laggier than the End/Overworld or Nether/Overworld transitions? Would having players in the potato dimension on multiplayer have performance issues above and beyond what you get when two players are in different dimensions now? Can a multiplayer server handle four dimensions as well as it handles three? Also, it's good training for the non-April Fools updates. There was an experiment somebody did where they got two classes of students to make clay pots for an art class. One class was tasked with making and submitting one clay pot- the best they could. The others were tasked with making as many as they could. Frequently, the quantity group made better quality clay pots than the quality group. They made big pots, small pots, bad pots- but also very good pots. Doing is the best training. Mojang uses the April Fools updates to give themselves a bit of training, away from the pressure of leaks, away from the strictures of compatibility across platforms, with no consequences if half of it is broken. We know with the frying block that people have very keen eyes towards hints about further updates, and from the Sniffer leaks we know that Mojang can't keep all information in-house indefinitely. The April Fools update gives them a chance to develop their skills. What's the minimum change they can do from their pre-established and verified functional code to get the result they want? They know Bastions spawn properly and well, that's the only structure that's really specifically associated with a slime-type mob with the magma cube spawners. They have old code for floating world types, so they can do a little tweaking to that and just roll it out the door. And then in a few updates' time, if they feel like adding a boss mob that has multiple stages like the Wither, they've seen what it looks like when people fight a mob that spawns other mobs and can decide if they like that. If they feel like using floating islands for something, they'll have spent a bit of time updating the code and working with it. The sort of mass testing that you want to make sure features aren't buggy, laggy, annoying, or not engaging is difficult to get, and the snapshot system is not a perfect cure for this. But the April Fools update allows you to have lots and lots of people testing and talking about the features and using them. And now, if you ever need to stress test a server where there are four players in each of four dimension, you can boot up the April Fools 2024 update and give it a go. Few other companies, even game companies, have this many eyes on them and this much to lose from bad updates. The April Fools updates are universally pretty well-liked or else neutral, because nobody has to play them as doesn't want to, and it's a diversion from the main path, not a step on it.
Few more things you probably didn't know about is. The rain in one of the new biomes also poisons you You can craft tridents from items called dents dropped by the plaguewhale All villagers no longer trades emeralds but trades in poisonous potatoes and Amber gems The resins has different clarity levels depending on where you obtained it, cloudy is from ore and fishy is from toxifins. Potato of knowledge is a consumable Exp bottle. You can sleep in the new Dimension Potato zombies attack other undead mobs, turning them into more potato zombies To lubricate items you need to put the item you want to lubricate in the bottle slot and the oil in the potato slot with a fuel source underneath Lastly that this is probably the most new content we'll get this year
So the smooth sailing jet engine block is of course amazing for so many things, but the corrupted block is pretty good too. Easy general purpose mob farm without needing to worry about light levels.

It's strange how many things in this April Fool's Update seemed to be based on Extra Utilities. Floater can be placed like an Angel Block, Cursed Earth equivalent, Double Compressed Block, ectara. Wonder if the Aether mod dev was a force behind it being a homage?

21:08 it’s a tool enchantment that makes whatever block you break with it drop a bunch of potatoes.
Few April Fools updates went this way.
The new slime potion would be cool for climbing walls lol
Interesting, maybe we can be able to craft tridents soon?
- smoothly moving structures
- grappling hook (may have been implemented as a proof of concept in case the crab won the mob vote)
- new tree generation (looks like Acacia with changed parameters)
- placing blocks in mid-air
...

Potatoes have resistance starch which is great, but they have
lectins, oxalates, alkaloids, phytic acid (which some is good, and they don't have a ton), and lots of starch.

You need 3779136 poisonous potated to make a stack of quad compressed.
I use Arch btw
which is because, to make a block you need 9 potatos (9), then 9 of those to get the compressed block (9^2), 9 of those for double compressed (9^3)
or in general for n compressed block you need 9^(1+n) potatos
so quad is 4th conpressed meaning 9^(4+1)=9^5=potatos
then 64 of that meaning
(9^5)*64 = 59,049*64 = 3,779,136

You can put lubricated items into the refinery recursively, to get higher lubrication levels. Lubrication level is a 32bit integer, it's a component, so can be modified in for example /give command.

Floatater is definitely my favorite block, i hope mojang gave us something similar in the future update where we could interact with the moving block.
So much of this feels like an homage to modded mc--makes sense given a lot of the devs have a history in modded and don't get to put those ideas in vanilla. But like, quadruple-compressed cobblestone? Blocks that can spawn mobs regardless of light?
A lot of it is just straight out of Extra Utilities! I love it!
The potato flower is literally just the wild potato in farmers delight
Once again, an April Fools update with a few things we would really want to see in Vanilla! The floating blocks and motor are really cool, it makes me wonder why they havent actually added airships to minecraft yet! Also that exhaust thing is similar to something i mentioned on one of Tangos videos, basically a box fan looking thing that can blow players, mobs and items in whatever direction you place it in! Could also work work with pushing airships around too :)
April fools snapshots use code from stuff they’re already working on, so we probably will get something similar in the next update or the one after that
Feels like this is what mojang spent all their time working on, and only gave us three things in the actual update cuz they ran out of time.
The potato battery also works as a lever, but in half slab form
The fact that this looks so well done tells me a lot of these will be added but are just reskinned for the april fools update😅
I hope they add some of the concepts from these like the grapple hook
Yea I feel this is related to some end update hopefully
Nope. They add things all the time and never used them later
I actually plan on getting the world record for most poisonous potatoes in survival minecraft
