Glarry Violin - Is a cheap £30 Ebay violin any good?

- Although, I am not a trained luthier, I have a reasonable idea about how to set up a violin so that it plays comfortably and sounds ok. This is a cheap ebay violin costing less than £30, so I was quite prepared to have a go at making this one very playable and ideal for a beginner.

Great video. You actually gave the cheap violins a fair chance unlike most of the more popular videos. Had I not gotten a more expensive, already set up violin as a gift this would have been invaluable.
Much like yourself I'm not a luthier, but with the amount of time I've had to put into either fixing or adjusting my own instruments, setting one like this up wouldn't have been too much of a struggle with your imparted knowledge.
(As for playing it, one day I'll not make people's ears bleed)
Most beginners wouldn't be able to fix the bridge. I got cheap one with 🪲 fixed already and got Tonicas strings as replacement for my son. Will check on he's progress after 2-3 years 😅
As a luthier I can give you a couple tricks for shaping the bridge. Put it in position then put the pencil on the fingerboard and extend it out to the bridge to mark the height of the bridge. This works because half the thickness of a pencil is about right at the end of the finger board. and use a pocket knife to cut the bridge, its faster than sandpaper. The front of the bridge should be planed down so the top edge is about 1mm thick.

The reason I suggested sand/glass paper using a fairly course grit, was that I was thinking about a very safe and easy technique, that could be attempted by anyone. But sure, if the knife works for those who are competent, why not indeed.
I'm using this fiddle in my Learning Fiddle for beginners series and for £30, quite frankly, I'm astounded at how good and playable the instrument actually is.

@@peakfiddler I am going to be learning the Viola in August. I realize that it is bigger than the violin as the case will be also and therefore more expensive. Can you recommend a similar set up please in 16 inches that I can purchase ?
@@pheona1000 I bought my 16" Viola on Ebay direct and the bridge was fairly close and didn't need much work. It was many years ago so my recollection has faded somewhat. It was around the £95 + import tax and I had to buy decent strings and tuning adjusters, which cost almost the same. So it's definitely a higher outlay.

Thank you for that great review. I always thought these super cheap violins were junk, but based on your review, bought a Glarry violin set for $42 (including shipping). I was blown away. Quality is just amazing. I love it much more than a $250 violin (inflation adjusted dollars -$2000?) my parents bought for me way back in 1970's from a professional violin shop. How can they sell this violin/case/bow/accessories for mere $42? Even just shipping from New Jersey to California costs as much, never mind cost of materials and labor. Even if they stamped violin out of plastic it will cost more than what they are charging.

Dear Marganneg! I f you can afford one I highly recommend getting a violin with genuine purffling and not painted lines! There more apt to have better tone and nicer wood. Look for fiddle back onthe back of the instryment. It looks like satiny ribbon bands and is an indicater of a well made violin. Go for solid maple back and inlaid purffling and straight tight grain on the belly and watch out for cracks. Take a magnifyer you be glad you did! Happy violin hunting!

Dear Shadowwerk! The violin is a camelia! IT fits into many music Jeana. I too enjoy a good roundabout gypsy dance tune played on the fiddle. I enjoy both classical, folk and dance music on the fiddle. Yah sometimes classical can be stuffy and boring but if you have a well set up violin you have choice!😅

I don't play the violin either, but I did as a beginner with a guitar and that's easier than a violin but difficult enough.
In addition I have a very good technical understanding.
But I think it's great that there are people who take the trouble to show in a review how it is done right.
it just takes some research to learn how a bridge is setup. i bought an electric violin and the bridge was too high. a little research and handle reference violin tool and i did and this gentleman did and sanded it down to the correct high. just do little at time and take your time.
That may be true but with the money you save you can get a setup.

Dear Webaddage! He didnt taper it because as a beginner the feet and string height and space between the strings are really all that are important. Yes eventually you do taper and thin the bridge but that is with a better grade of maple. Beginer violins require softer bridges and softer bridges sag. So you leave them thick to telegraph the string energy to the post. A thin bridge buzzes and looses energy and also is easily cut by the high e tension. So you leave cheap violins bridges thick to keep them sturdy enough so they wont warp and so playing 5ths is easier. Hope this answers your question. Happy bridge making! Ya gotta ruin a few bridges in order to see what you can and cant get away with. You can get carried away with cutting too much out of a perfectly good bridge. Leave them thick and they will work better.

I spent a bunch of time on another video that that supposedly told to set up the bridge and the person used custom jigs with no info on making them and no measurements on anything at all. You on the other hand nail it. Exactly what I needed to set it up. Thank you again!

I acquired an Easter fiddle, I think it's very similar to the Glarry you made this video about, only it comes with 2 bows, otherwise it looks identical.
The Easter is inexpensive and sounds good when I'm not making it squeak or squall... lol...

A very good video, mot people do not realise to have a bridge professionally fitted can cost £100 plus, so on a £30 violin (you could but 3 for the price I pay for my strings) not worth considering. So knowing how to at least get it playable will help people. One thing I would suggest is the bridge is also too thick, and needs substantial thinking.
I must say, it does look like this instrument would be a very good starting point to convert it into an electric violin.
After you snap a few bridges youl come to the conclusion you spent a lot on bridges and wasted a lot of money by thinning at all. Keep the bugger thick use rat tails in the holes very gently and youl have a nice bridge if you don't snap it first! The man knows what he is talking about, he's the best teacher I've seen on cutting in a violin bridge either professionally or amateur and most people are beginners! I wish I'd had his instruction when I was a wee lad!

Here is the South U.S.A. we say a violin uses strings while a fiddle uses strangs. I guess it needs the accent.
Lucky we don't use catgut anymore, else I hate to think what the fiddel strings would then be called, haha

Great to know if you set it up right you don't need to spend a fortune to get a reasonable violin to start playing.
I'm wondering why you didn't taper the grooved edge of the bridge after sanding it to the proper height. Perhaps that might increase the vibration and by proxy the volume as well. I'm 67 years old and just now trying to learn to play the fiddle. I am really excited about it and glad I found your series. Thank you very much for sharing!
I prefer the slightly less bright tone, a hang over from my electric fiddle playing.
Thanks for sharing this experience! I borrow your technique to adjust the bridge, more efficient than mine. Beware of tuners like this: I got one out of tune, a newbie could have been cheated. The strings aren't brilliant, but certainly adequate once they get worn in a bit. I have filmed all of my beginner series of videos using this cheap violin and the same strings, bow and rosin. I felt it was important to put myself in the same boat as a beginner using a low cost fiddle.

I should get a new Glarry electric/acoustic violin tomorrow and I am looking forward to trying my hand at playing and even setting it up. I already play a little bass guitar and have even rebuilt and fully setup a few older basses with new pickups, nuts, bridges, and tuners. I really enjoyed your video, it was very helpful... I am sure to have a ton of questions and will watch all your lessons as I go!
With that amount of experience you should have no problem setting it up. Like any new instrument, be prepared to perservere, as it won't happen overnight. But it helps if you already play a stringed instrument and it's way less of a stretch than the bass guitar.
This is awesome sir... I'm a retired military fellow, and am just getting started in learning about violins. That is to say both in playing, and in workmanship. I have a $30 instrument coming in, and am researching to do exactly this sort of thing. I've even ordered an ebony kit with pegs, tail, and chin rest. Along with a set of Viotti strings and bridge to replace what ever happens to already be on the instrument. I figure that it's good to know how to do these things. I also ordered a nice'ish carbon bow that will match the ebony gear coming in as well. Granted the extras cost more than the violin itself, but by the time I'm done, it should be in much better shape than most of the two or three hundred dollar violins on the market. Well that's the hope anyway.

it's amazing common sense told me that my bridge was to high on My acoustic Cello my fiddle and violin. many teachers or instructors are not going to take the time to fit a student's bridge to that perfection selling the instrument to the student you have empowered me with a another anveue
Just wanna say I m sorry if I used the phrase violin shaped object. I didn't mean to put down anyone! My dad was a sailboat builder and I was raised to appreciate fine woods. I'm a craftsman myself and own an inexpensive pressed wood violin. The secret is getting all surface of bottom of bridge feet to contact the violins belly. Im still working at it it takes years of experimentation. Again my appologies for any snobbery on my part.Thats not what I'm about! Happy fiddling!😅
This reinforces the fact that it's the musician that makes the instrument sound good, not the instrument. Then again, I think you could make a stick with strings sound good. Cheers

Why is the bridge so thick? I watched a video sanding the upper profile of the bridge to thin out the upper section where the strings lay. Is this a preference?

I had already modified my bridge but it is good to get confirmation that it was correct to do so. I also spread the strings out a bit at the nut, something I had seen done on a different review of a glarry. Not for the feint of heart that though lol.
A couple of points you may have missed (apologies if it was me that missed them):
- take care that the bridge doesn't fall when tuning
- over rosining the bow could get a scratchy sound
The thing I struggled with on day one was holding on to it lol. It took me a while to figure out how to set up the shoulder rest. I thought I would have to shave the beard off.

Apologies Sean, I have only just spotted this post. I agree with all you say, except maybe hold fire on shaving off the beard. I did that a few years ago and it took me a while to get used to it, not for the feint hearted.
Just got a glarry for free, I struggled to hold it to and was debating shaving the beard but seeing your comment feeled me with joy it can stay ha ha.
Pour olive oil into the violin and swill it around until it is absorbed throughout the complete inside of the violin. This will simulate the aging process by filling in the open pores of the timber, which also naturally happens after many many years of playing due to dust, sweat and grime. This will take off the harsh edge in the sound. Sanding down the heavy lacquer coat with 1000 grade sandpaper then polishing it up with olive oil can also add to simulating the aging effect, to warm up the sound even further.
Have you actually done that and what about the smell after a period of time? Sanding all of the lacquer is quite a daunting task, for a £30 fiddle, once again have you actually done it and posted a video anywhere?
@@peakfiddler Haven't posted a video but ..... a 100 year old violin smells as well. The olive oil does not noticeably smell. The olive oil is relatively inert. Sanding enough to get rid of the glossy outer surface doesn't take long. Once the lacquer has a dull finish, it becomes absorbent for the oil to sink in. I have done this to a number of guitars including a Gibson ES335 because when they are new they sound is too harsh. Also to a cheap ES175 copy and a 12 String Fender. Bearing in mind we are talking about a 30 quid Instrument so if the theory makes sense then it's worth trying. I have also a Chinese fiddle which I oiled many years ago, fitted a bone nut and optimised the string height.
I just bought a black violin on ebay for 40 bucks and the nut was way too high so I filed it down to about 1.35 mm on the e side and 1.5 mm on the g side. It could go as low as just under 1 mm but better to take off too little than too much. I then sanded the bridge down like you explained. Now the finger board works easily the way it is supposed too. I couldn't play a note before I filed the nut down.
Thanks for the head's up. The Glarry Gv100 is currently selling on EBay for 29pounds 59. On Amazon UK the same make is 163 pounds 99. What's that all about? Peakey can you do a review of the Advanced Glarry GV306? It's about 60pounds and seems impossibly too good to be true.

I did one on their £40 electric violin, in fact I've used it on quite a few of my recent videos including the Christmas carol one. I've changed the strings to good old Pirastro Tonica to improve the playability and have used it on my recent gigs, plugging in via Behringer EQ pedal and fishman DI, bit tricky to play without squeeks trying to creep in but I can compensate by slightly adapting my bowing style.
Some might unkindly suggest that this a VSO, a violin shaped object. Nevertheless, I imagine that properly set up, as long it sounds "reasonable" it would make decent start for someone taking up the violin....
Chris, what string height do you prefer at the end of the fingerboard I’m MM, E-string and G-string?
(G-string 6mm) (E-string 3.5mm) Well that's what my Jay Haide is set to and it's pretty comfortable

@UCp6okpJgRwPSOibyWJOK4yg I used fairly course sand/glass paper when I sanded my bridge feet to fit the contour of the violin top, so it sanded down the feet fairly quickly. plus remember to use a sheet of protective paper so you don't scratch the surface. Failing that, use a small half round file and slowly shape the feet of the bridge, keep checking that the fit is correct.

What is the size?
Hi Lillian, It's a proper full size 4/4. Same size as my other 4/4 fiddles. It's ideal as a starter fiddle, if it's set up correctly.

Its all to much 4 a beginer .. i use a Stanley Knife to cut the Bridge ,, then sand .. . :)
It really depends who is playing it
The main reason i wanna learn violin/fiddle is playing blue grass and southern gospel for Jesus! Classical pieces too. Thanks for the review and technical manual!

Yes I agree, but for anyone who is first trying out the violin, this is quite a cheap way to see if it is an instrument that suits them for very little cash outlay. Then they can move up to a higher priced instrument costing many thousands, without making a rash judgement. It seems like basic common sense to me.
You buy a cheap one to practice on then save up for a good one it’s not a complicated thing, pretty sure most people would prefer a violin to nothing

Why do they not come "set up"? I'll not pay 2-300$ for a violin that is not "set-up" and ready to play.
Neither would I Becky, but this violin only cost 41$ including the cost of postage. Less than the price of a set of strings.

My parents paid $250 for a violin in 1970's (a pre-owned violin from a violin shop) and it was all "setup" but was awful to play for 12 years. I think a $40 Glarry violin is much better than my old violin, and knowing how to set up your violin is useful skill.
I’m so sick of the snobbish behaviour people have when it comes to cheap violins, at the end of the day if you are practicing and it doesn’t limit your ability to do so then it’s the perfect violin for you… sure if you need to play to a crowd then it’s probaly worth getting an expensive violin but honestly I’d rather have a cheap violin then beable to save up for a high quality one rather then buying a mid range violin…

I think for a low cost entry level instrument it is ideal. Particularly, as most people won't know if they will stick with it. It's certainly much better than the cheap fiddle I started on.
