But I don't really care because the reporting seems to be objective and fact based. With discussion of ways the company might be devoted to ocean cleanup, even if it seems unlikely.

I think most of the people defending 4Ocean are looking at the title of the video, “Is 4Ocean a scam?” and reading it as though he is asserting “4Ocean IS a scam!” And while the viewers probably should have paid closer attention to the video, wherein he clearly states that it is NOT a scam, the blame does PARTIALLY fall on him as well, for making such a click-bait-y title for his video. He knew that title would get people worked up, so he shouldn’t expect anything less than for people to overreact a bit and assume he is saying they’re a scam.
I’m irritated because why even try and possibly deter someone from supporting this organization? Everything he said is based on opinion in theory. He is absolutely uneducated about this project and has no factual information to provide only his opinions. The fact that he put scam and this organization’s name in the same sentence and throughout the video is all you need to do to plant a seed. this organization is out there doing a hell of a lot more than he is sitting in his chair making up stories for views. There are 1 million other things he could’ve spoke on if he wanted to talk about scams instead he targeted an organization that is out there making oceans clean and safe to the surrounding communities as well as ocean life. Whether they’re making money or not isn’t really that much of a factor because everybody has to be paid to survive unless you struck it rich and just strictly do volunteer work. It would be one thing if we were buying the bracelets and nothing was being done. Absolutely not the case. They’ve done more work than our own government has been able to provide.
Payroll is a huge expense of any corporation. 4ocean could easily go broke if they didn't have a good business model based on continuous profit. Nothing in what they do is going to be cheap. Yes, they definitely need to brand and market themselves.
Annabelle D oceans aren’t the only polluted places! If you live by a river or stream or forest, those also need cleaning! You can also help out at local animal sanctuary’s or shelters, they always need volunteers
The second I've heard that buying one bracelet cleans 1 pound of trash, I thought it was a scam. It is ridiculous. 40 000 dollars to clean about a ton of garbage?!? With 15 friends and 500 euro to hire a truck, and buy trash bags and gloves, we cleaned 3 tons of waste one weekend from a river bed and we had few bucks left for beers. Invest some time to clean in your community and you will help much more. You will also bring awareness. Hell, even the waste from your bracelet's package will be almost as much as the waste they will supposedly clean with you 20 buck! What these two sell is just clear conscience.

There are so many campaigns going, and so many people participating for no profit, you just need to look and sacrifice some of your precious time. It is also a great activity for families. I live in a country, where government prefers investors over nature, and most environmental campaigns are organized by common people and local communities. A very successful campaign stated in FB and managed to buy more than ten infant incubators (15,000-20,000 USD each) for hospitals, by simply encouraging people and schools to gather hpde bottle cups, and collecting them for recycling. It is managed by two people, who have regular jobs, plus volunteers' work. So, there are many ways to help. For starts, reduce your waste. My biggest concern with 4ocean is first: the cost per pound they give is unreasonably high. That probably means, most of your investment goes for marketing, rather than creating jobs and actual cleaning. Of course, any business needs capital to start and expand. I just hope their numbers add up, because the information in the website is not very detailed. Second, the bracelet obviously became a fashion accessory that screams "See! I care and save the planet!". I saw lengthy threads where commenters say they haven't purchased one yet, because they can't decide on the cutest color. I am pretty sure for most 4ocean's clients, buying the bracelet will give them the false assurance, that they did everything they could. But it is not. In fact the problem is beyond repair, and it will take much more effort from every single person, jut to minimize the damage.

Offering over 300 jobs in 27 countries and donating over $300,000 is not a bad thing. I have plans to start an organization to use the plastic they have stored in warehouses to build homes from recycled plastic. It is a long process to get started but I have faith.

Apart from Haiti and Bali, I couldn't find info about these cleanups in 27 countries. Also, are those 300 employees permanent and if so, how many are out of US and are actually engaged into cleaning campaigns? How do they produce the bracelets and where? To my worries of what they do with the waste stored in those brightly branded, squeaky clean containers in their adverts, you kind of gave the answer - still nothing. I hope your idea will happen, and the US waste (I assume you are from there) will be completely recycled. But what about Haiti and Indonesia, where recycling plants are few, or even non existing? Are they going to find investors and build one? Transport the trash? Sell it to China for profit (remember, they don't recycle US waste anymore)? All this things should be explained clearly, if they want others, besides Instagramers, to join their cause, because there are plenty of swindlers who exploit the environmental problems.

I live in a developing country in south east asia, our minimum wage is only $1/hr and looking at our ocean condition, you'll pick at least 10lbs of trash per hour.
Thought so, 1lb seems kind of small for 20$ I would’ve thought the equivalence of at least one trash bag full would’ve been fair. And I know your minimum wage is 1$/hr. But I have seen videos calling out companies that use children to look for things like Mica so that they can get a profit and get what they want, without having to spend a lot of money. The mica video I watched about Makeup they give the kids a mere few cents to risk their lives to look for it.

lmfao I got one as a gift from my boyfriend's step mother and it broke, thankfully, in my mother's pool where I could make sure it didn't pollute. The bracelets themselves are incredibly weak meaning that either they did the bare minimum for recycling the garbage for creating the strings and beads, or that they're actually just cheap materials that they purchased. Having been someone who's worked with glass beads in jewelry making?? There's no reason they should have broken right away.
I think they are actually very smart. The bracelets are beautiful! So more demand for them= more trash taken out of the ocean= more bracelets= more sales and then it continues!

The collected plastic is shipped to the Philipines or some other developing nation to deal with. We ship most of our garbage our rather than trying to deal with it ourselves. It's more economical. Yes I said garbage because only a small percentage of plastic waste cam be recycled. Of course 4ocean doesn't tell you that.

So here's the thing, if 4ocean was devoting 5% of profits to end pollution that would be great, but instead they are takeing money from people who might otherwise be compelled to give to charitable causes that will clean 100lb of garbage with their 5% and using it to enrich themselves ANNND tell people it's ok, because they may or may not be doing anything because..... The workers are probably being payed around 10 cents an hour and clean up might have stopped if they've cleaned up a million pounds the .0-1~ of the trash and they can continue to enrich themselves by doing nothing, the clean up was paid in advance. And people will say, but I bought this bracelet that accounts for nothing with money that would have counted for nothing, but when hundreds/thousands of people do this, that money could have made a difference but now it can't. The end's are nothing and means are pretty lies.
One thing that you did not question is who manufactures the bracelets ? Are they manufactured in a 3rd world country by child labor for a few pennies each? I would say there is a great possibility of that.
In one ad they stated that the native people in Bali handcraft the bracelets. The ad also showed grown up women working on them. So I think it is made by adults, but probably for little labor costs.
We have such bracelets here in Kenya. And they are damn cheap. I doubt they can go over 5 dollars. Actually three. It's just beads and a string. Not hard. So they are making money

Is not wrong but it's always good have a more thorough analysis about it, some people might even change their mind and donate the 20 dollars to a non-profit organization that can collect more plastic from the oceans with the same amount of money, some people buy their bracelets just to help cleaning the oceans so it's not really about the bracelets it's about helping the environment
I've actually done 2 cleanups with this group, and we pulled hundreds of pounds of trash from the water, and they gave us a bracelet as a thank you. There are volunteer cleanups, there is work being done, and the ocean is being helped.
I was at one of their cleanups as well, very well organized and promotes awareness. It's funny how folks are so upset about a couple of business entrepreneurs making some $, yet don't question banks being bailed out and billions in taxes being squandered. In the former example your contribution is completely voluntary but in the latter case it's not lol!

Just because someone voices their opinions and concerns about one specific issue/topic, that doesn’t mean that they can’t care about a different topic just as much. Whataboutism is not productive when discussing issues, and automatically weakens your own argument. When it comes to this specific topic, I don’t know which side I stand on yet or where my conclusions lie, but I do know I have many unanswered questions and concerns regarding their business model and practices. Simply stating my view on this topic has nothing to do with my views on other topics; things that I am equally, if not more, passionate about. Why would anyone in the comments be talking about their views on Wall Street and taxes, when we are on a video *specifically* talking about an ocean cleanup business, and why do you just ignorantly assume that people can only have one interest? Simple marketing. How many items in the our grocery stores are called health something? The products could be cereal, crackers, bacon or whatever. Overworked, ill informed consumers rely on the packaging and advertising to provide "education".

I just want to say what a blessing this company is. My order was wrong and within 5 seconds of sending them a message on Facebook, they had made it right and let my kids keep the bracelets that were wrong. I want to say that the mission of cleaning the ocean has inspired my kids to take it upon themselves to pick up litter that they see and try really hard at keeping their earth clean. It has led them to research ocean life, ocean pollution, and gotten them to using technology in a way for self led learning and for that I call it a win! I would like to know how much this dude is making to ramble on and repeat himself so what’s your salary?
I think the point of the video is fair. Accountability is never too much to ask, especially for a for-profit company that markets itself as being on a noble mission.

I'd pick it up for free. I remember when I was 8 and fishing in the sea for the first time, instead of fish i caught a pile of trash. They had to cut the line.

All 4Ocean does is sell people a good conscience. They don't really make any impact on cleanup or recovery efforts and have a bad habit of using local programs to boost their own sales. I live in Florida, where if you can believe it the ocean is kinda important for both our ecosystems and economy. I'm sad to say that as this company got more popular, our local efforts saw a downturn in support because, after all, the people buying the bracelets already did their part in their minds. And every time there's a spike in 4Ocean media attention, there's a visible drop in our donations. TL;DR if you want to actually make a difference, either donate to well-established charities or do something that we desperately need more of and donate your time and a pair of hands. A couple dozen people cleaning an estuary does infinitely more good than giving $20 to some big cleanup effort.

Maybe they need competition, this new "business" they're running is basically a monopoly, so they can charge whatever they want as long as they hold up to what they "sell" (that is 1lb of ocean trash cleanup)

I remember going to the 4ocean website after wanting to find ways to actually help with cleanups rather than buying a bracelet and I couldn't find anything.
think about it like this. imagine if I said I would pick up one ounce of plastic from the ocean if you paid me 10 dollars. or imagine if I said I would feed 2 starving kids if you paid me 40 dollars. sure I'm technically doing what I said I would do and it's still good, but I'm doing so little with so much money. like, I could feed four or five kids with 40 if I actually USED ALL the money. I could totally pick up more than an ounce of plastic for 10 dollars. a pound of plastic isnt really that much in all honesty. 20 for a pound? more like 5 for a pound, and 15 for some guy's wallet

Like Mother Tersa's organization that had 10's of millions of dollars at the time of her death, but did not provide medicine to those in need, because she believed that it was up to God to save people, not medicine. I'm from Indonesia (Bali to be exact) and I have no idea about 4ocean until those bracelet ads popping up on TH-cam. I've heard bunch of other organizations that actually done beach clean up around here but not 4ocean. Maybe it's just me. I wonder if there are any locals like me tho

Danye, I'm training to be an officer on board ships and so I know a few things about ships. There are websites which track the location of nearly all ships (those fitted with an AIS transponder). An example of this is the well known "Marine Traffic" website. You simply go onto the site, type in the ship's name and it will show you it's latest known position and some other information. Now, I can't find a single image/article which clearly states the 4Ocean ship's name or IMO number. It is not named "Ocean Plastic Recovery Vessel." I also cannot find any details on what the vessel used to be named before 4Ocean purchased it (you can use the previous names to find the new name). Regarding IMO numbers - all IMO registered vessels have an IMO number which is usually painted onto the stern of the vessel and somewhere near the bridge. Every picture or video I have found show no traces of this number which is supposed to be easily visible from port, starboard and the stern. Their vessel cannot be tracked because it is operating under a different name and all of it's identification features have been hidden. The ship "does not exist" with the details known to the public and is likely not operating at all. Edit: Additional information "The regulation requires AIS to be fitted aboard all ships of 300 gross tonnage and upwards engaged on international voyages, cargo ships of 500 gross tonnage and upwards not engaged on international voyages and all passenger ships irrespective of size. The requirement became effective for all ships by 31 December 2004." (SOLAS Chapter V - Regulation 19). Basically, a vessel of this size is legally required to have an operational AIS transponder on board, meaning that it would be trackable if we knew the ship's name.
It’s situations like this that makes me worry if there are any organization trustworthy enough for me to cooperate in. Whether they’re in it for helping the planet instead of the money.

He too has to be self funding because No Gov.of the world claims part if any responsibility towards cleaning up the Monstrosity of a mess mankind has abused the oceans with. Media& Gov are slow on the Uptake to assist however, Boyan Slat & Support Network have ongoing work -- progression shown from creeks& estuaries into river cleaning dumpsters solar powered & currently being delegated out to 100 dirtiest Rivers W.W. Just the sheer budget for online ads is a red flag. I've worked for local and international non-profits and we NEVER even come close to 4ocean online ad budget. Never. Even UN agencies don't have that much budget allocated for consumer-targeted marketing. Not that these non-profits, the big ones, don't have funding to allocate, it's that the funds are better used for programs and projects that actually have an impact on their cause. Edit: Please donate to non-profits instead. Visit their websites, there's usually a pie chart at the bottom showing what percent of the funds go to projects/programs and what percent goes to overhead costs. Some have 90% going to projects, to beneficiaries, to the cause you actually want to support.
I don't really like the company but that's a terrible comparison. Advertising is an investment. If you really did work for a non profit organisation and they didn't invest in advertising it's because they were stupid, not broke.

4Ocean don't sell bracelets, they sell good conscience. Not helping resolving anything, but at least it help feeling better while keeping using shit-ton of plastic every year.
$20 per pound of trash was an immediate flag. HOWEVER nonprofits really arent as accountable as people think. Selling products would just count as unrelated business income. it’s still allowed, just taxed.
Elizabeth Rose well, arguably, the issue with recycling plastic is that there needs to be a market for recycling to work. If recycled goods aren’t bought, then recycling facilities can’t really exist. So, it is important to at least use the plastic and turn it into a product. However, the bracelet is super cheap looking and this plastic could probably be put to better use.
I've only just stumbled upon your comment on 4Ocean Cleanup's work (this video). I like the way you analyse the available information, and I love how 4Ocean released a video 3 days later to update the public about their vessel - most likely due to this video and their response. I hope people keep making companies accountable by analysing their interests and claims, like you did here. Thank you for doing this, and posting the update on their response later (a day after their update).

Plastic is a byproduct of oil refinement. therefore using it IS an act of recycling. If we didn't use the stuff it would be thrown away directly into landfills.
Us simple mortals can't really do much of a change, only big corporations and massive producers can make the biggest change, we can't stop consuming plastic if that's all that's available to us and eco-friendly products prices are ridiculous.

This is great and happy to see how you clarify the position as I believe that many believe this is a not for profit. I happen to be from Boca Raton (now in NYC) and flew back to interview for the marketing head position. Absolutely love the idea of the company but had hesitations about the clarity. As a marketer and Surfer I would have loved the clarification rock solid prior to getting to this point. While waiting for my interview with the newly installed CEO something made me uncomfortable - a person entered their office and the front desk and asked if he could donate money to the company.....Clearly this person was not aware of how the company is run. I have worked for 3 #1 companies and felt this would need to be addressed immediately and this interview happened a few years ago. Great job!
Their entire business model is nothing but a hollow attempt at environmentalism. Creating those braclets, packaging them and mailing them out to people is going to offset whatever meager amount of plastic they decide to pick up. As the video states 1lb of plastic is nothing. In the long run it's going to be negligible compared to the environmental cost of shipping tens of thousands of braclets to people all over the world. If you really want to help the environment get in touch with local organizations that do regular cleanups and go get your hands dirty.
Are you sure these bracelets are made of ocean plastic? Thats the biggest question for me. If yes.. you van see the price, you can understand that bracelet isnt worth 20$ , and that is just a donation.
I can't say for these but I got a bracelet from another company that sold abandoned fishing line bracelet (witch I got more for the look than weather or not the charity was legit) and too there credit not a single thing in the packaging was plastic. Even inside the cardboard envelope was shredded cardboard rather than the bubble wrap I thought it was.
And where is the plastic that they are collecting going? That's what I want to know. It can't all be turned into bracelets (even if it were, that would be kibd of self-defeating since a portion of those will end up back in the ocean...but these dudes would have a made a good buck by then).
I work in a marina and I see these guys all the time cleaning out our marina and the inter coastal and they are all paid not volunteers they are captain driving out and cleaning up I see them working just in my area all the time and that’s a lot
Yeah but some people still think we can do tortillas without eggs. That vessels in movement, vessels parking, maintenance, everything is for free. And specially, that oceans cleaning has to be done by volunteers, while they are sitting with their fat asses at the beach eating ice cream, while the volunteers cleans their shit.

I saw the commercial 10 minutes ago and was prompted to the website to check the bracelets. It said somewhere in my reading than less than 5% of the material used in the bracelet is the actual trash that they have salvaged from the ocean. So it's been there for two months between arriving and the last time AIS was switched on and hasn't sailed since (because surely, a vessel committed to cleaning the ocean would turn the AIS on (when sailing) to avoid ocean-polluting collisions with other vessels). A pound simply isn't enough. I'm not American/British etc and I'm only familiar with kilogram. At first a pound sounded like a lot to me, but then I remembered that a pound is roughly half of a kilogram. 🤷♀️
Even with cheap labor, boats are stupendously expensive to own and operate. Boats like the ones shown in this video could easily cost $60,000 each, and use a few hundred dollars’ worth of fuel per trip (a lot of boats will only run on 93 octane, which isn’t cheap nowadays). Then there’s all the maintenance expenses, lifejackets and equipment, crew training, boat licenses and insurance, and possibly even the need to acquire permits to be allowed to do cleanup operations within coastal waters. They also have to hire competent people to man radios, radar sets and charts, to be sure no-one gets run over by a passing cargo ship.
Right? No one has to buy this product. And they don’t have to “show their profits” at all. Other private businesses don’t and this company is actually helping the environment and is getting hounded. It’s crazy haha

Even if it were the case that only 100k out of every million they get is going towards cleaning the oceans while the other 900k goes into their bank accounts, that's still 100k towards a cleaner planet that wouldnt have been there without this company. I totally agree. Just because something says "nonprofit" doesn't mean it's acting ethically or legally. And take a look at some of the non-profits' executive salaries. The other thing is that they're not out begging people for money. They're enticing us to join the cause. I think we'll find many more "charities" following the for-profit model because it works. People aren't bitching about one more begging campaign, and we're glad to buy. Some months ago I bought my first bracelet. It doesn't go with my jewelry or style but I wear it every day and keep spreading the message of what they're doing (and therefore, sending a message about how we need to stop ruining the planet).
I hope this video gets to the CEOs of 4Ocean and we can get some real answers, not because their doing something "bad" but because I would like to know how much good they really are making

Also the fact that ocean clean ups does not only mean the beach. You gotta go scuba diving for the majority of the trash. That would drive the costs up. But really they're selling bracelets made from junk for 20 dollars. The profit margin would be around 500% and any less is just a dumb business move.
They just saved 2 turtles chained together in Miami again a few days ago during a clean up mission. I think they’re doing much better than anyone else I see in the area contributing to the trash piles in our water ways.
@@carlosandleon Well the videos show the huge amount of floating stuff and they have a big ship that could be used to pull that up so all they need to do is show videos of them doing just that. And also show what they do with the waste as well of course. All charities these days happily show videos and photos of every step of this as it is incredibly easy and free to do so!

I used to work on the ocean for 30 years. The deck and setup of this ship is too small to collect 1/10000000 that much. You would use so much fuel to get so little plastic... just saying.... Anyone else who worked on the ocean have any thoughts?
I agree with you. I also could not find the vessel on any vessel tracker, or any sign of it's actual ship name or IMO number. The vessel "doesn't exist" using any of the details on photos and their own website's articles and is likely only for promotional use.
They bought a retired supply vessel, used it for promotion, painted and named it something else and are now using it as a personal surf spot hopping boat. Just speculating.
Pluse I would assume they would have to hire real captain and deck hands. But (this is a thought) could a shop possibly tow a net and or other containers(like barges) to increase the capacity of plastic

The second I've heard that buying one bracelet cleans 1 pound of trash, I thought it was a scam. It is ridiculous. 40 000 dollars to clean about a ton of garbage?!? With 15 friends and 500 euro to hire a truck, and buy trash bags and gloves, we cleaned 3 tons of waste one weekend from a river bed and we had few bucks left for beers. Invest some time to clean in your community and you will help much more. You will also bring awareness. Hell, even the waste from your bracelet's package will be almost as much as the waste they will supposedly clean with you 20 buck! What these two sell is just clear conscience.

There are so many campaigns going, and so many people participating for no profit, you just need to look and sacrifice some of your precious time. It is also a great activity for families. I live in a country, where government prefers investors over nature, and most environmental campaigns are organized by common people and local communities. A very successful campaign stated in FB and managed to buy more than ten infant incubators (15,000-20,000 USD each) for hospitals, by simply encouraging people and schools to gather hpde bottle cups, and collecting them for recycling. It is managed by two people, who have regular jobs, plus volunteers' work. So, there are many ways to help. For starts, reduce your waste.
My biggest concern with 4ocean is first: the cost per pound they give is unreasonably high. That probably means, most of your investment goes for marketing, rather than creating jobs and actual cleaning. Of course, any business needs capital to start and expand. I just hope their numbers add up, because the information in the website is not very detailed. Second, the bracelet obviously became a fashion accessory that screams "See! I care and save the planet!". I saw lengthy threads where commenters say they haven't purchased one yet, because they can't decide on the cutest color. I am pretty sure for most 4ocean's clients, buying the bracelet will give them the false assurance, that they did everything they could. But it is not. In fact the problem is beyond repair, and it will take much more effort from every single person, jut to minimize the damage.

Offering over 300 jobs in 27 countries and donating over $300,000 is not a bad thing. I have plans to start an organization to use the plastic they have stored in warehouses to build homes from recycled plastic. It is a long process to get started but I have faith.

Apart from Haiti and Bali, I couldn't find info about these cleanups in 27 countries. To my worries of what they do with the waste stored in those brightly branded, squeaky clean containers in their adverts, you kind of gave the answer - still nothing. I hope your idea will happen, and the US waste (I assume you are from there) will be completely recycled. But what about Haiti and Indonesia, where recycling plants are few, or even non existing? Are they going to find investors and build one? Transport the trash? Sell it to China for profit (remember, they don't recycle US waste anymore)? All this things should be explained clearly, if they want others, besides Instagramers, to join their cause, because there are plenty of swindlers who exploit the environmental problems.

But I have seen videos calling out companies that use children to look for things like Mica so that they can get a profit and get what they want, without having to spend a lot of money.

lmfao I got one as a gift from my boyfriend's step mother and it broke, thankfully, in my mother's pool where I could make sure it didn't pollute. The bracelets themselves are incredibly weak meaning that either they did the bare minimum for recycling the garbage for creating the strings and beads, or that they're actually just cheap materials that they purchased. Having been someone who's worked with glass beads in jewelry making?? There's no reason they should have broken right away.

The collected plastic is shipped to the Philipines or some other developing nation to deal with. We ship most of our garbage our rather than trying to deal with it ourselves. It's more economical. Yes I said garbage because only a small percentage of plastic waste cam be recycled. Of course 4ocean doesn't tell you that.

Does the end justify the means? I think so. We are drowning in plastic and it's killing our oceans.
So here's the thing, if 4ocean was devoting 5% of profits to end pollution that would be great, but instead they are takeing money from people who might otherwise be compelled to give to charitable causes that will clean 100lb of garbage with their 5% and using it to enrich themselves ANNND tell people it's ok, because they may or may not be doing anything because.....
The workers are probably being payed around 10 cents an hour and clean up might have stopped if they've cleaned up a million pounds the .0-1~ of the trash and they can continue to enrich themselves by doing nothing, the clean up was paid in advance.
And people will say, but I bought this bracelet that accounts for nothing with money that would have counted for nothing, but when hundreds/thousands of people do this, that money could have made a difference but now it can't. The end's are nothing and means are pretty lies.

I would say there is a great possibility of that.
In one ad they stated that the native people in Bali handcraft the bracelets. The ad also showed grown up women working on them. So I think it is made by adults, but probably for little labor costs.
We have such bracelets here in Kenya. And they are damn cheap. I doubt they can go over 5 dollars. Actually three. It's just beads and a string. Not hard. So they are making money

I've actually done 2 cleanups with this group, and we pulled hundreds of pounds of trash from the water, and they gave us a bracelet as a thank you. There are volunteer cleanups, there is work being done, and the ocean is being helped.

Simple marketing. How many items in the our grocery stores are called health something? The products could be cereal, crackers, bacon or whatever. Overworked, ill informed consumers rely on the packaging and advertising to provide "education".

I just want to say what a blessing this company is. My order was wrong and within 5 seconds of sending them a message on Facebook, they had made it right and let my kids keep the bracelets that were wrong. I want to say that the mission of cleaning the ocean has inspired my kids to take it upon themselves to pick up litter that they see and try really hard at keeping their earth clean. It has led them to research ocean life, ocean pollution, and gotten them to using technology in a way for self led learning and for that I call it a win! I would like to know how much this dude is making to ramble on and repeat himself so what’s your salary?
I think the point of the video is fair. Accountability is never too much to ask, especially for a for-profit company that markets itself as being on a noble mission.

All 4Ocean does is sell people a good conscience. They don't really make any impact on cleanup or recovery efforts and have a bad habit of using local programs to boost their own sales.
I live in Florida, where if you can believe it the ocean is kinda important for both our ecosystems and economy. I'm sad to say that as this company got more popular, our local efforts saw a downturn in support because, after all, the people buying the bracelets already did their part in their minds. And every time there's a spike in 4Ocean media attention, there's a visible drop in our donations.
TL;DR if you want to actually make a difference, either donate to well-established charities or do something that we desperately need more of and donate your time and a pair of hands. A couple dozen people cleaning an estuary does infinitely more good than giving $20 to some big cleanup effort.

I'm from Indonesia (Bali to be exact) and I have no idea about 4ocean until those bracelet ads popping up on TH-cam. I've heard bunch of other organizations that actually done beach clean up around here but not 4ocean. Maybe it's just me. I wonder if there are any locals like me tho

Danye, I'm training to be an officer on board ships and so I know a few things about ships. There are websites which track the location of nearly all ships (those fitted with an AIS transponder). An example of this is the well known "Marine Traffic" website. You simply go onto the site, type in the ship's name and it will show you it's latest known position and some other information.
Now, I can't find a single image/article which clearly states the 4Ocean ship's name or IMO number. It is not named "Ocean Plastic Recovery Vessel." I also cannot find any details on what the vessel used to be named before 4Ocean purchased it (you can use the previous names to find the new name).
Regarding IMO numbers - all IMO registered vessels have an IMO number which is usually painted onto the stern of the vessel and somewhere near the bridge. Every picture or video I have found show no traces of this number which is supposed to be easily visible from port, starboard and the stern.
Their vessel cannot be tracked because it is operating under a different name and all of it's identification features have been hidden. The ship "does not exist" with the details known to the public and is likely not operating at all.
Edit: Additional information
"The regulation requires AIS to be fitted aboard all ships of 300 gross tonnage and upwards engaged on international voyages, cargo ships of 500 gross tonnage and upwards not engaged on international voyages and all passenger ships irrespective of size. The requirement became effective for all ships by 31 December 2004." (SOLAS Chapter V - Regulation 19).
Basically, a vessel of this size is legally required to have an operational AIS transponder on board, meaning that it would be trackable if we knew the ship's name.

Just the sheer budget for online ads is a red flag. I've worked for local and international non-profits and we NEVER even come close to 4ocean online ad budget. Never. Even UN agencies don't have that much budget allocated for consumer-targeted marketing. Not that these non-profits, the big ones, don't have funding to allocate, it's that the funds are better used for programs and projects that actually have an impact on their cause.
Edit: Please donate to non-profits instead. Visit their websites, there's usually a pie chart at the bottom showing what percent of the funds go to projects/programs and what percent goes to overhead costs. Some have 90% going to projects, to beneficiaries, to the cause you actually want to support.

Elizabeth Rose well, arguably, the issue with recycling plastic is that there needs to be a market for recycling to work. If recycled goods aren’t bought, then recycling facilities can’t really exist. So, it is important to at least use the plastic and turn it into a product.
However, the bracelet is super cheap looking and this plastic could probably be put to better use.

Plastic is a byproduct of oil refinement. therefore using it IS an act of recycling. If we didn't use the stuff it would be thrown away directly into landfills.

They don't pay people to clean up the beaches. They rely on volunteers, based on the constant job postings at HQ (seems like turnover is high).
wehaveapiperdoone He addressed this in the video. They have a paid crew that pick up the majority of the trash. Any trash the volunteers pick up doesn’t go towards the “1 lb of trash per bracelet” count
This is great and happy to see how you clarify the position as I believe that many believe this is a not for profit. I happen to be from Boca Raton (now in NYC) and flew back to interview for the marketing head position. Absolutely love the idea of the company but had hesitations about the clarity. As a marketer and Surfer I would have loved the clarification rock solid prior to getting to this point. While waiting for my interview with the newly installed CEO something made me uncomfortable - a person entered their office and the front desk and asked if he could donate money to the company.....Clearly this person was not aware of how the company is run. I have worked for 3 #1 companies and felt this would need to be addressed immediately and this interview happened a few years ago. Great job!
Their entire business model is nothing but a hollow attempt at environmentalism. Creating those braclets, packaging them and mailing them out to people is going to offset whatever meager amount of plastic they decide to pick up. As the video states 1lb of plastic is nothing. In the long run it's going to be negligible compared to the environmental cost of shipping tens of thousands of braclets to people all over the world.
If you really want to help the environment get in touch with local organizations that do regular cleanups and go get your hands dirty.

Are you sure these bracelets are made of ocean plastic? Thats the biggest question for me. If yes.. you van see the price, you can understand that bracelet isnt worth 20$ , and that is just a donation.
I can't say for these but I got a bracelet from another company that sold abandoned fishing line bracelet (witch I got more for the look than weather or not the charity was legit) and too there credit not a single thing in the packaging was plastic. Even inside the cardboard envelope was shredded cardboard rather than the bubble wrap I thought it was.
And where is the plastic that they are collecting going? That's what I want to know. It can't all be turned into bracelets (even if it were, that would be kibd of self-defeating since a portion of those will end up back in the ocean...but these dudes would have a made a good buck by then).

I work in a marina and I see these guys all the time cleaning out our marina and the inter coastal and they are all paid not volunteers they are captain driving out and cleaning up

And specially, that oceans cleaning has to be done by volunteers, while they are sitting with their fat asses at the beach eating ice cream, while the volunteers cleans their shit.

I saw the commercial 10 minutes ago and was prompted to the website to check the bracelets. It said somewhere in my reading than less than 5% of the material used in the bracelet is the actual trash that they have salvaged from the ocean. People are focusing on how they are making a profit, but 4Ocean is a for-profit company, they say it themselves. There are pros and cons of being a non-profit and a for profit. At the end of the day millions of companies are producing waste, at least there is a company that is collecting it, even though it may be a small amount

Last location (last time the vessel had her AIS on) has it at the same spot on April 27, 2019. So it's been there for two months between arriving and the last time AIS was switched on and hasn't sailed since (because surely, a vessel committed to cleaning the ocean would turn the AIS on (when sailing) to avoid ocean-polluting collisions with other vessels).

In short:
Vessel was named/launched in November of 2018. 8 months later, still hasn't done anything. Fair enough, maybe in November it only was a brightly blue painted hull and not much more (fairly cheap those) and then it would take a long time to get it sea-worthy and outfitted for the job. But ....
Now, what would a decent investigative journalist do with this information?

Even with cheap labor, boats are stupendously expensive to own and operate. Boats like the ones shown in this video could easily cost $60,000 each, and use a few hundred dollars’ worth of fuel per trip (a lot of boats will only run on 93 octane, which isn’t cheap nowadays). Then there’s all the maintenance expenses, lifejackets and equipment, crew training, boat licenses and insurance, and possibly even the need to acquire permits to be allowed to do cleanup operations within coastal waters. They also have to hire competent people to man radios, radar sets and charts, to be sure no-one gets run over by a passing cargo ship.
Honestly, it’s a business, if they are honestly fulfilling their pledge then I’m happy for them however much they are personally making

Even if it were the case that only 100k out of every million they get is going towards cleaning the oceans while the other 900k goes into their bank accounts, that's still 100k towards a cleaner planet that wouldnt have been there without this company. Maybe stuff like this is how we trick soulless, greedy corporations into making the world a better place.
I totally agree. Just because something says "nonprofit" doesn't mean it's acting ethically or legally. And take a look at some of the non-profits' executive salaries. The other thing is that they're not out begging people for money. They're enticing us to join the cause. I think we'll find many more "charities" following the for-profit model because it works. People aren't bitching about one more begging campaign, and we're glad to buy.
Some months ago I bought my first bracelet. It doesn't go with my jewelry or style but I wear it every day and keep spreading the message of what they're doing (and therefore, sending a message about how we need to stop ruining the planet).

Also the fact that ocean clean ups does not only mean the beach. You gotta go scuba diving for the majority of the trash. That would drive the costs up. But really they're selling bracelets made from junk for 20 dollars. The profit margin would be around 500% and any less is just a dumb business move.
They just saved 2 turtles chained together in Miami again a few days ago during a clean up mission. I think they’re doing much better than anyone else I see in the area contributing to the trash piles in our water ways.
@@carlosandleon Well the videos show the huge amount of floating stuff and they have a big ship that could be used to pull that up so all they need to do is show videos of them doing just that. And also show what they do with the waste as well of course. All charities these days happily show videos and photos of every step of this as it is incredibly easy and free to do so!

I used to work on the ocean for 30 years. The deck and setup of this ship is too small to collect 1/10000000 that much. You would use so much fuel to get so little plastic...

I agree with you. I also could not find the vessel on any vessel tracker, or any sign of it's actual ship name or IMO number. The vessel "doesn't exist" using any of the details on photos and their own website's articles and is likely only for promotional use.
They bought a retired supply vessel, used it for promotion, painted and named it something else and are now using it as a personal surf spot hopping boat. Just speculating.
