It’s only a tiny mention, but the Gaffer said in the pub that Bilbo taught Sam to read and I enjoy that every time I read it. I like the mental image of Bilbo patiently and kindly watching Sam practice his letters in a sunny room in Bag End.

Even overlooking that the "Sam is the real hero" view is often very dismissive of Frodo's more esoteric struggle with the Ring for an entire year (and that it was Frodo's pity for Gollum, pity that Sam did not share for most of their travels, which ultimately enabled the destruction of the Ring), I don't know if I'd say there _is_ one "real hero" of Lord of the Rings.
The downfall of Sauron was brought about by fellowships, brotherhoods, and friendships between individuals and between kindreds alike. The Battle of Pelennor Fields was not won by Aragorn's arrival alone, but also the faithfulness of the Rohirrim to aid Gondor against all odds when they could easily have stayed home to lick their wounds; and furthermore, by Eowyn and Merry's shared courage and devotion to Theoden, which allowed them to deal death to the undying Captain of Mordor's forces.
And only thanks to that victory were the remnants able to march towards battle unwinnable by strength of arms at the Black Gate, so that Frodo and Sam might pass to the mountain unhindered, a journey which also only succeeded because they were able to spur each other on when neither could have ever endured the trip alone.
The conflict in Lord of the Rings is a conflict of Camaraderie against Dominance; of those who stand against impossible odds together, despite differing backgrounds and a few grudges from far-off times, against one who would make all things his own and sends others to fight for him by fear and threats.
There is no one true hero, responsible in the end for the final triumph, but many heroes who (though perhaps in greater and lesser measures) brought victory by a vast web of mighty works.

I love Sam, the choices of Master Samwise is one of my favourite chapters. I just hope that in their love for Sam people don’t under appreciate Frodo. Both were exceptional hobbits and there was a good reason Sam idolised Frodo!

While great in the films, Sam's quality shone greater in the books. Never faltered in his loyalty to Frodo and possessed great resistance to the Rings corruption. When he was the ringbearer, The Ring being very potent now that it was near Mordor tried to seduce him of visions of power and glory and Sam was able to overcome it due to his humility and wanting a simple life as a gardner

They were both the hero of the journey; Sam could'nt have taken the ring his will was not strong enough but he had the strenght to carry Frodo ,and Frodo was in the end so exhausted by his wounds and the terrible power of malice of the ring that Sam was needed to help him. Frodo's task was not to destroy the ring but to bring it to Mount Doom where it could be destroyed. And he did this; Frodo was the brain and the heart and Sam was the legs and the heart.

Tolkien called Samwise Gamgee "the chief hero" of The Lord of the Rings, going so far as to refer to the modest Hobbit as "far superior to" himself. Sam's grace, kindness, and undeniable heroism are ultimately responsible for the elimination of Sauron's presence from Middle-earth. But I didn't need Tolkien to confirm the most important character in the book and movies for me.

    • @MosDefnIT88
      @MosDefnIT88 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

Unlike Peregrine and every other character in the books and movie besides Frodo, he doesnt experience one moment of comfort, being around friends, or, in your face hope, safety, and, love besides what Sam is able to provide for he and Frodo both after they leave the fellowship and commence their lonely journey. Everyone had important parts to play of that there is no doubt. Sam is the unflinching heart of the entire story and without him Middle Earth falls.

A batman was an officers servant soldier in the british army, who when thd officer retired/sent in his paper followed him as a trusted servan and sometimes friend as a valet, footman, bodyguard or butler.

Frodo did not fail. He lived with the terrible temptation and and the unspeakable mental and physical torture of living with the ring. No one else could have done it. All the Wise and the mighty knew that only Frodo could take the Ring to Mordor. He accepted the duty in spite of his fear and his overwhelming desire to stay in Rivendell with Bilbo. Unpopular opinion: Sam was compelled by Gandalf at the beginning of the story to stay with frodo until the quest was completed.
Not to disagree that Sam was a faithful and loyal companion but to explain how Gandalf's magic strengthened that loyalty to the degree he would do things like leave the shire, wade into a river knowing he couldn't swim, and stay with the fellowship knowing that the shire, his father, and his lady friend were in danger.
None of this diminishes his bearing of the ring and wishing for clear skies and sunshine, breaking the magic darness of sauron and giving the rest of Gondir and the realm of men to make a stand.

I’ve always found the question of “who was the true hero of LOTR” to be a tautology. There is no single hero. To me, it has always been about the enduring spirit of humanity when faced against impossible evil (humanity being a multiracial term here).
That said, Sam is tied with Aragorn for my favorite character and the line/scene where he carries Frodo near the end is one of the most poignant in all of cinema and in all of the legendarium.

Tolkien was known for bringing in comparisons of religion to his works. I believe that while Sam wasn't necessarily a Jesus type figure, he was a perfect example of the passage of greatest love and sacrifice. And staying true no matter the situation or temptation, very much like Job. He's a shining example in my opinion of what it means to do good for the world and ask little in return.

I agree that Sam is a hero and it is tough when in comparison to the others in the fellowship that he was the true hero but when one thinks on it I can see it. He saw and spoke on things comprehending them in their truist form with no ego to become problematic especially when later tempted by the ring. Sam's voice and support to frodo was a great blessing keeping the focus on hope and the good as frodo interiorly fought the ring. Sam did carry the ring and was able to give it back to frodo says something about his interior strength and his humility in "knowing his place" in the bigger picture. I liked that he became a good family man and leader and sharing his gift from galadriel with the shire lands. It made me laugh when the hobbits leaving bree with aragorn and the pony bill in tow (I forget the nasty characters name) was sticking his head over a hedge I believe making a stupid comment when Sam eating an apple threw the apple hitting the creep square in the head shutting him up as the group kept walking.

No I do not agree that Sam is the true hero of the Lord of the Rings. For all the events that play out so many different characters played their part. As Gandalf said even Gollum had his role to play, that ended in the ultimate destruction of the Ring. So definitely too complex of a story for any one person to be the true hero.

I agree that Sam was the real hero because Frodo wouldn't have gotten as far as he did without Sam.

Perhaps i didnt understand it in that video but what does "the gaffer" actually mean? In german we call someone a "gaffer" who's starring at women or at an accident without helping. But it seems thats not the cade here right?

A big deal was made of how Samwise mourned parting with Bill the pony, but no mention was made of how they were reunited on the journey back to the Shire. As to the final question, Samwise is clearly not the hero of LotR - it doesn't even have a single hero, really. Frodo and Aragorn are the two chief protagonists, but neither is the hero of the entire story. Samwise is my favourite character and he does embody everyman heroism, however, the bravery of ordinary men thrust into horrifying situations, such as Tolkien saw for himself on the battlefields of WWI - which as the author would be keen to point out, does not make him an allegory for anything, it's simply an observation on human nature...

I'll watch this video when I'm done at work, but I'm re-reading the books right now . . . and Sam is kind of a huge jerk. At one point, Tolkien says that Samwise is an optimistic hobbit by nature, but he really isn't. It *feels* like Smeagol possibly could've turned a new leaf, except for Sam constantly being mean to him. He really is quite rude! I feel more and more pity for Gollum this time around. He's allegedly a "bad guy," but he's been corrupted by an incredibly powerful supernatural artifact for his entire presence in the narrative. He deserves better than what he got.
