Yeah, super interesting they rolled out for Microsoft first. Maybe for funding reasons. Also, hoping to see a playlist for Linux distros. Thanks for all your work ❤
As much as I hate Windows, I'm not going to fault proton for releasing their Windows client first since it's the biggest potential user base. Looking forward to the day when Windows on desktop gets eclipsed.
@@kostasmira2933 free you say, then Google you must use. If you want privacy you must stand up for that right. Many times it involves supporting those that are capable of making it right. If that means giving $ to proton then it must be done. Or you can self host 😅
Great stuff! I just installed it after deciding in june that I'll switch away from Google services. Proton is in my oppinion a really great service, which I really enjoy using. Seeing it evolving and improving day by day is great! Hopefully Linux tool will be available soon. Thanks for your work on educating us on privacy!
How did you get 1tb of space? the unlimited plan begins at 500gb and the family plan at 3tb. the bonus storage adds 10gb per year of subscription to the unlimited plan.
I was just checking this out from Proton. After going through fried Harddrive hell a few years ago and losing alot, not all of my DATA, I started backing up everything but being able to access files from any computer or phone is handy too. Thanks for the information. Liked and subbed the channel.
Did you ever get this to run using Windows on arm 64? If so, then how? Not having a desktop app was the only reason I was holding back from subscribing to Proton Unlimited. But my main device is a Surface Pro X, so arm support is impotant
As a Proton Fan: yes, that's only a small step into the right direction. I don't want to do, what Techlore demonstrated here. I want to see what's already in the cloud and sync everything with selective sync between my devices. I don't want to do this kind of backup thingy into a special computer folder. So, so far not usable. Must wait longer.
our review of how they roll things out for different systems was spot on. I would have loved to have watched this video if the MacOS version that was released last week had been available. What a poor job they did with it.
One thing the is fastidious is that it takes 4 clicks to get through to a list of its 5 apps especially mail and then another click. They could put those on the first menu when you start it up.
I'm confused because on the one hand, you can supposedly select any existing folder to sync to proton, however, proton requires you to select a folder for proton files to live. Does this mean it duplicates those files from the normal folders to the dedicated proton folder on your PC?
Not sure if I'm the only one, but I'd really like to have some kind of build in editor for both text and spread sheets. I use that a lot on Google Drive, and it's something I find to be really missing, for me to jump onto this and move all my stuff to Proton drive.
@@skittles.abuser what I like about Google drive is having access to an editor right there in the browser. For editing spreadsheets or office documents. Having to download a file, then edit it and then re-upload it is just a step down. Especially if you have some collaborations with people on different documents. I often do stuff like this on the fly from my phone also.
i think the next major service that proton releases should be an office suite honestly Although i would rather they work on finishing their current services first before moving to new ones lol
Tbh I'd rather just have a user fs driver that could mount the drive somewhere and seamlesslly work as part of my filesystem for moving, copying, changing/appending, whatever
I synced a folder and nothing was visible in proton drive, but storage got full and now I cant remove anything to clear up the storage. Kinda frustrating.
This is awesome to have... I have 540gb worth of storage on my proton account with them that was essentially useless until now. Heck if they make a linux version I would be able to replace megasync.
My first impressions were disappointing. For one, the UI seems confusing, and I don't really know what Proton Drive is doing when I get it to upload something. I don't like that they don't have any options to delete files in Drive from the client, and that the files are just "there". One other thing: I go to upload a file through the client, then I visit the web version, and my file isn't there. I don't know if this is a bug or something, but this new client isn't at all what I expected it to be like. Google Drive still has a lot more functionality over Proton at the moment.
are you pretending that proton drive isnt even a year old yet? with developers who havent been coding drive software? and you want them to be just as good this early?
I just want to be able to drag and drop an individual file from file explorer into my drive within file explorer without adding that file to a folder that is synced. You can do this with Filen.
Why there is that strange folder "my files"? So now there is "Proton Drive" folder storing just another folder which is the proper drive... That's not very convienient.
What about encryption, isn't that the main adv of using proton services, is it E2E encrypted , how are files encrypted on the client, who has the keys....
Off-topic question. It's my impression that many techs are the worst when it comes to privacy. What do you think? I suppose TH-cam techs have little choice if they want to support their subscriber base (Discord, Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok ...)
This looks great. Is this desktop app on both MacOS and Windows? Or do you know if they are working on the MacOS version (if they don't have it on MacOS yet)? Also, is Proton Drive cross-platform?
I nearly changed to it a few weeks ago, but ended up upgrading my google drive instead. The biggest issues as to why was the PRICE and also the lack of support for photos (I need to have preview file photos) The no photo preview is a deal breaker at this stage for me, so I will revisit in 12 months to see if they have added that in as apparently they are working on it, however knowing Protons slow development pace Im not hopeful it will be done anytime soon.
Proton does not have a slow development pace actually. They have very complicated systems and things like image preview would have the need for the entire image to be downloaded, decrypted and then displayed instead of just downloading a lower resolution image. Although there are obviously ways around this, things like this extend feature development periods. Just be aware that google drive does have access to your files and do acess them regularly.
The issues I have; Unable to sync to Proton Drive My Files. Drag and Drop only. When Proton Drive client is logged out, the file explorer Proton Drive section still shows My Files. They can't be opened or copied, but they can be deleted. Forcing a restore in Proton Drive internet. Also the file structure and names are still visible; I consider this a Privacy flaw. It would be nice for Proton to include a File Vault (ie One Drive) which would allow the inclusion of My Files.
Loved Proton until we found out they were taking screenshots and scanning our companies emails. Still a good vpn for our use, but after testing other providers, we found Express to be the runner up IF they were customizable like slow old surfshark.
Would 2 times be better? Google is cheaper because they sell a lot of your data no? Do you use for personal use or corporate use? If you were corporate you'd want to investigate proton as a option no? Also nice pfp 😁

Linux client is a must.
I came to comment the exact same thing lol
Also, it needs to be available as a flatpak

As much as I can't wait for the Linux version, the poor people stuck in Windows need Proton security far more desperately. Glad Proton responded.
