I've also listened to a number of these American Revolution Institute lectures lately and I thought this one was pretty interesting. Especially considering commentary from other lectures in the series about how important a uniform was to a soldier both as a useful garment that conferred prestige and also a highly valuable item. Neat details here that link geopolitical developments to military dress.

I’ve listened to a number of these Revolution Institute lectures lately, so, despite some skepticism about the title - ummm… French Military Dress? - I thought I’d give it a chance. Alas, my skepticism was well-founded. After 40 minutes I’ve given up. Neither interesting, nor relevant enough to bear further listening. I fully appreciate trying to use material culture to try to explain our past, but it feels like the history, as it already exists, is the catalyst of this story of reform, while the material culture, the ornamentation and uniforms, is not the driving force of the story. Largely, I see mostly just good illustrations to ornament history. So, this “height of pedantry” just is what it is.

How silly. Don't you have anything else to do?

@@seandail1 Let's respect Dr. Keagle's work as more than "silly"! I mean, some people more into fashion or more obsessive about material culture than I am might find this to be hours of scholarly archival work well spent. My rather long-winded comment was an attempt at constructive criticism about general relevance and not meant to belittle the scholarship. I only wish that it hadn't been the very first comment Dr. Keagle received on TH-cam and that maybe I'd left out my somewhat flippant "skeptical" tone at the beginning of my comment - I didn't think of that when I hastily wrote my post. Apologies!

My reference was to your comment, not Dr. Keagle's work...

So a lecture about French military uniforms was indeed about French military uniforms, how surprising!
