Why mono lavalier mic?
I know this video is over two years old but I just wanted to let you know that because I am on a budget I research every purchase into the ground. This is bar none the best comparison video I've seen on these two devices. I actually ended up watching this twice and it is a very rare thing for me to sit through a 24 minute video. You solidified my decision on the Tascam. Subbed, liked, and purchased through your link, thank you.
Thank you! These took so much time to research make and edit, I'm glad it was helpful!
it was great for me two. i been reading , watching on both .. and i pulled the trigger earlier today. i go tthe tascam .. thanks for taking the time , money you put into these types of vids. it does help others.
soa big thumbs up..
I just got the tascam in 2022 :D
Boom! Exactly what I was looking for, the Micro SD Card Max Capacity 04:18 knowing that the TASCAM can receive a 64 gb card and performs so well, did it for me. Thank you so much for this video comparison... getting the Tascam units for sure! Reviews and comparisons like this one are extremely helpful for those of us needing quick evaluations of necessary gear as, guys like me, are often on tight production schedules. Thumbs UP, have a GREAT DAY!!!
This is a very high quality video, very detailed. Congratulations by your efforts, hope your channel grow quickly.
Nice comparison!
I listened to this video on my studio grade Sennheiser HD 25-C II and I think the sound quality of the in-build mic's of the Zoom H1 are a lot better. The Tascam almost sounds as if there is a low-pass filter applied... really miss a lot of mid/high in that recorder.
Thanks for sharing! I will listed to it again.
Great review, I know it must have taken a lot of time to prepare. The top end of the Tascam does sound dull compared to the H1, but it's hard to know from the test whether the H1 has exaggerated high frequency response and whether in fact the Tascam is actually more accurate. When mine arrives (here in Australia) I'll be comparing it with the Sony M10 and the Zoom H2N, and probably with a Sennheiser MKH series MS stereo pair which cost more than all three recorders together, as a reference. As for monitoring via wifi, the Tascam publicity seems to say that it will be on playback only, not during recording. But it's confusingly worded, so time will have to tell. Very poor that the apps are not fully developed yet - they should have held release of the hardware till the software was finished. What if they can't make it work in the end?
Peter Nicholls Yea Its a shame, If people buy the recorders and we never get a proper android app a lot of people won't be happy and that's not good for a brand. You make a good point its very confusing the way they word their info " Audio from the DR-22WL can also be streamed over Wi-Fi to check the recording. Plug headphones into your smartphone and listen to a near-realtime feed from the recorder. " I hope they are not trying to mislead people. As far as actually listening to what's being recorded, I don't see why they couldn't do that. We already have that with devices that send a video signal close to real time. The GoPro and GH4 both do that and an audio signal takes up much less bandwidth than video. I guess time will tell.
...or the Zoom H1 employs a mid and high EQ boost during REC-time (software side). Which would not be a good thing if you need full control later in post-production. Untreated recordings will always sound a little more boomy...
Respect where due, thank you for your excellent reviews! I've watched (and re-watched lol) both of your Tascam DR22 reviews, as well as many others, and have just placed my order after a week of deliberation. Many good reviews, but your reviews stood out in particular as exceptional, for their thoroughness, fairness, and video/audio quality. Best wishes to you and yours for your help, and best wishes for your channel success for your great production :)
I went with the Tascam DR-22WL. Can't wait to get it.
Yukari Yakumo how is it?
Tdk Sivakumar Great so far.
Can you plug it directly into a DSLR and record like that?
Matthew Bishop Yes, put it in dubbing mode with the mode dial, and connect the line out from it to your DSLR (or if your like me and own an Olympus Micro 4/3s camera buy the SEMA-1 adapter to connect it which you can get from here: www.amazon.com/Olympus-SEMA-1-Adapter-Digital-Cameras/dp/B0035LBRNA).
Yukari Yakumo Placed an order DR-22WL:)
What a great review. The short cuts save time and the review is very in depth. Thank you.
Thanks for taking the time Max. Super review. Something most reviewers miss is the quality of the line input. That's important for users who would like to records needle drops, instruments... Very thorough review otherwise. Cheers!
Max Yuryev I went ahead and purchased the Tascam DR-22WL along with JK MIC-J 044 for Sennheisser , the Tascam is very feature rich and got a great deal on it :) Thanks.
Well done. I agree with your test conclusions, the Tascam does well with lows, the Zoom does well with highs. Which at this point still leaves me undecided. But I had a good chuckle at the "10-12 Hours" microblip. Thanks for your effort!
Spot-on when you said we came here for the 'WL' feature. Do you ever throw these files up on Audition to view the spectrogram? That will show you the range of the lowest to highest frequency as well as the noise floor better than Premiere (at least, it will show it visibly). Not sure if I'll add this to the kit yet, but thanks for putting this together.
I like the Tascam features but with the music sound test it sounds more muffled and less defined than the Zoom
The best soft soft tutorial ever!
Did your neighbours throw any eggs at your car when you had your stereo at full blast? ;)
This is what i need , thank you for this comparation 😊
Best comparison on the web MAX, well done. I was going to buy the Tascam BUT now have heard the compressed sound of the TASCAM in comparison to the very bright H1, I think the H1 has superior clarity. The Tascam sounds very compressed, especially in your car stereo test. Could it be that the Tascam is auto adjusting settings for the compression? Can it be manually adjusted to get the same brightness/clarity as the H1? I want to use it for music only. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks for this video. Well laid out with indexes. So many others reviewing microphones don’t do audio tests... yours was pretty good actually because we sort of have approximation of how that music is supposed to sound. As for the mics it seems like Zoom picks up less “room/environment” and more the actual sound
Thank you for the detailed review, I specially liked the recording comparison while on video. Just purchased one based on this review with your url.
Hi Max! Thanks a ton for this wonderful comparison between the two. Your reviews are always to the point, it really helped me make the decision. I'm going for Tascam dr-22wl. Great job, cheers!
Hi Max - thanks so much for your helpful and detailed review. In my opinion you were absolutely right about Zoom being better with high end and Tascam with low end. Having tried both very briefly I was able to confirm that the Tascam lacks crispness in capturing sounds like birdsong and the Zoom gives me the feeling that I am hearing back what I had heard originally.
The Tascam, however, sounds really nice for interviews because it feels slightly processed and gives a little nice warmth to male voices in the low end. So sonically I would say it depends on needs - Tascam nice for interview sound & close-up and Zoom best for field recording and capture. As for the interface, I didn't have time to play much but I got a good idea of that from your video and I would say for my needs I just wanted a really fast start and simple controls. Zooms used to have terrible interfaces (I had H2 & H4 original) but the H1 did just what I needed, so I bought it. The DR-22WL WiFi stuff seems like a great idea, but 2 years on I see Android users are unhappy with it, and it's not quite there. Keep doing those great vids - I really like your style! Cheers from London UK
A fantastic review! I have a Zoom H1 and it sounds great but... the buttons are ridiculously too small I often needing to use my fingernail, pressing hard, to get get them to work. It is also very hard to keep holding down the tiny buttons for rewind or fast forwarding, so you often end up having it jump to another track. To set the input levels and file size also can be hard to do on the fly since they are the same buttons and you have to go through just the right combination to access the mode you want. The memory card slot cover had to be glued shut being so small and flimsy it would not stay closed. I was in plastic product design and injection mold design and it is a shame for this overall poor design that somehow passed that could be easily been done right at the beginning. I just ordered the Tascam DR-22 at B&H for $109.
BTW, street price is hovering around $110 now, so feature-wise, the Tascam is the best bet. I expect Zoom will update the H1 (eventually) to compete. I do wish they would both allow for removeable built-in microphones.
I feel 10x more confident in soft soft, thanks!
I know this is kind of old, but I have my computer hooked up to my home theater system and it was very clear that the Tascam was more bassy, but the H1 was a bit better on the highs, with less bass. Both sounded quite good though.
Awesome! I ended picking up the Zoom H1 and the Azden Mic to your reviews. Subbed - keep up the great work! :)
Robbie Sabo Thanks! I appreciate it!
I searching to buy my first recorder. What i heard from this review..
12.12 Zoom H1 with lav sounded way better then tascam. 12:18 Tascam or lav has buzzing noise.
13:55 Zoom H1 with Rode vs Tascam with Rode, similar but zoom h1 has less noise.
14:50 Max volume better results less noise with Zoom
16:50 test in car, better results with Zoom H1, way better highs, less noise in lows,
Full blast test, 19:08 tascam has some reverb effect.
So Tascam has better features, better body, but worse recording capability.
I guess i will go with bigger brother of zoom family just to get features, and solid body.
Nice quality and very useful video test thank u !!!
Only thing I'd ask: the ios live monitoring is now working? Iwant to use this tascam to record wedding speeches lav mic on the groom and it would be very useful tha ability to minitoring (sorry of my bad english)
Great review. For future reference when doing the voice audio comparisons, record the same audio clip from both devices at the same time instead of doing each statement separately. That way your putting the exact same frequencies and db into each device. The car audio was fantastic and convinced me to go with the h1 as it had much better highs.
Great in dept comparison! I think I'll go with the Tascam. Thank you for your time.
not bad, I liked the music part; Tascam sounded a little muddy compared to the Zoom, and there was one section that sounded like "slapback" (double bassdrums); wonder if you have a special "stereo" setting enabled there? Would have preferred if you played some more "traditional" music instead of techno though. In a band situation techno is probably the last thing one would record live. more like drums, guitars and keys.
FANTASTIC! Max, thank you for all the time in producing this great comparison of both units. Just the info I needed to make my decision. (Tascam!) *Also, came back to use your link to Amazon for purchase to say thanks.
I just got the zoom, and not 100% clear on which way it should be facing. You have it upright in all the tests, is that the way it's supposed to be? Upright with the LCD towards the listener, and not pointed forward horizontally?
INVISIGOTH Well if your using the built in mic's then you want to face those towards the speakers upper chest/neck basically just below the mouth for optimal sound. If your using an external mic it doesn't matter how the recorder is positioned.
Great presentation, Max. Can both mics be used (1) as a USB mic, to record directly onto a laptop through the USB connection? and (2) plugged-into a camcorder or DSLR, to record sound directly while a video is made? (I believe the Zoom H1 is said to do both of these, but there isn't much info about the DR22WL yet, and I don't see anything in the online manual about recording to a PC using USB.) Thanks!
kerumbo Hey, The DR-22 can't be used as a USB mic but the zoom h1 can. Didn't realize this as the video was made but most don't use it as such. NP!
Max Yuryev Thanks, Max. Well, you concentrated on comparing the 2 devices as recorders, not as standalone microphones -- but I was wondering about the versatility, and it's interesting that the Zoom has an edge there.
Thank you so much for your review! Just ordered the Tascam.
***** Glad to help!
Firstly thank you for the detailed review.
I am really confused, is it really just me or i found the sound coming out of Zoom H1 much better.
Did you do any sort of post processing on the audio from H1 and DR22WL when you did the first sound test with the JK MIC-J 044.
I already have Audio Technica AT-899 and Tascam DR-60D as my primary setup but i need something more compact while i am on the move.
Hi Max, nice review, very objective. I do agree with you on the slightly brighter top end of the Zoom and the better low end of the Tascam. This does correlate somewhat with the size of the microphones, although there are other factors that also influence this, like internal built in EQ circuitry. Thank you, Regards
Hey, thanks for the Video and the test. I read that it's possible to use the H1 as an external mic for a laptop through USB. Do you know if the Tascam has the same feature?
thanks.
You've done such an awesome review. I went with the Tascam DR-22WL. Thanks for this! :)
I just got the dr22 in today and right away I hooked up my rode video mic pro to it to test out the set up that I've been wanting. Then I'd listen to the feedback through some regular apple earphones and it sounds weird. It's raspy and poppy. Is it just because I'm listening to it through some cheap earphones? I've never used a field recorder before and I'm still a beginner using the videomic pro. What would you say are the best settings on the Tasman when using that kind of setup?
Nice review, Max! Thanks a lot! It looks like, Zoom is better providing middle tones, but Tascam is better for lows and highs, especially in terms of music.
Best tutorial and information 💪💪💪
if you compare noise flor you should use normalization fx first to match the volume on both samples, preferably in some audio softwere to have better visual preview of audio spectrum.
Hi. How did the recorded files of your car system sound to you compared to the sound of your car system? To me, the Tascam sounded like it had a midrange hole whilst the Zoom sounded like it lacked bass and had distorted midrange. How much would the Rode mic cost? It sounded really good! Thanks for doing the review!
Muito obrigado pelas informações.
AMAZING video, I'd love to see more of these kinds of comparisons. Quick note, do you still use the Zoom H1? Noting that you said you liked the Tascam, why'd you plug the lav mic to the Zoom? Cheers
ento. Also just for clarification's sake, which has a better pre-amp built in based on experience? They sound similar to me (plugging in the VideoMic and lav), but just in curiosity's name haha
ento. Honestly they pre amps are really close, there may be a slight improvement on the Tastam when you test it but in real life usage its same. The reason I used Zoom is thats what I've always used :) Habit.
Max Yuryev Hey Max! I got a Tascam DR-22WL a week ago (being at the same price as a Zoom H1)and am absolutely loving it - so thanks!
However, I didn't have a windscreen on me (oops) and it picks up wind a lot more than expected; I was wondering if you had a good, cheap recommendation (aside from Tascam and Rycote's solutions, being $40)?
Thanks!!
Imagine a Hendrix in the comnt section said he was struggling and niggas said give up lmao.
fantastic video. can i hook up the tascam to a boom Mic?
Dude you are awesome just for showing me the Leaving Earth Dubstep track. Only a Mass Effect fan could recognize music from the game. But as for the recorder I am setting my eyes on the Tascam 22wl. Thanks
I'm not sure- is it possible to mount tascam to tripod? Is there any screw on the back or something?
In the playlist, I want to take a part of two tracks and put it in the setuper, but I don't know how...I want to setup each track piece by piece,
Hi,
Thx for this helpful video. To my ears, the Tascam is better on your voice, meanwhile the Zoom is superior in the music session in your car.
What do you think?
I had the Zoom, hated it.Felt flimsy and was awkward to operate.Fortunately it was defetive (funtions would freeze up) and I was able to return it.I now have my eyes on the Tascam.
Thanks for the review. PS: found out the tascam, and some other tascam products, use a proprietary micro-B *4* pin connector.Good luck finding a replacement if you need one, turned me off for sure.I looked everywhere online-no luck.
Great review simple and clear. Keep up the good work. I will purchase the Tascam and use it in Paranormal Investigations, I hope it will do the job well.
+Rui Sergio (Light in the Dark) Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Well Max after waiting for the review, i didnt expect that much info and to be that in-depth! loved it! errm im pretty much sold on the TASCAM if im 100% honest! would you say that -12db is an essential value to record at for a live concert?
I think most people do record at -12db, that way if the music or whatever it is that your recording gets louder it doesn't peak out and get distorted. You can always make it a bit louder afterwards if you would like and your on the safer side. If you wanted to you could bring it closer 0 maybe -6db if you know it won't get louder but I wouldn't suggest making it louder than that.
Very nice comparison! Thanks for your review!
Thanks for the thorough comparison.
glad it helped
Great and very thorough review!
Hi Max, I have a question. Does the tascam dr22wl could connect to laptop for using the external mic? Thanks for answering.
I love your reviews.
I am a complete nubie to this topic.
When listening to the car segment Would the results have been different with a different choice on the Tascam scene presets?
Very thorough review bro. perfect.
Very good job! 👏👏👏👏👍 My Favorit is the Tascam. 👍😉
which one is better. would you recommend it, thank you
Hey, thanks for your hard work, really useful.
Though I gotta ask, what are your thougts on the slight buzzing sound on the tascam during the lav test?
wow the Zoom H1 sounds much clearer, glad I got that one.
Just bought using provided urls (tascam 22wl), hope that help u in any way. thanks for great video.
Great video. Appreciate the work you put into it.
Does Tascam has an accessory pack like zoom? It was very important to me when I bought zoom h1, those features. Makes a lite of difference. Great video, by the way! Indeed Tascam is a better quality product, but without accessory pack and costing $50 more, it became hard for me, living in Brazil, to afford it.
Hi Max,
Love your videos. What would you suggest to use for a 5 piece band rehearsing in a basement? With AND without Wi-Fi.
Thanks! If you want something that will record it properly (each instrument on its own track) then you need this amzn.to/1GiikZd
Great review...i'm just curious does the Tascam has the hole on the back side you can screw onto a tripod too like the Zoom H1? Thanks
+Andrew L. Xiong Yes it does! :)
Awesome, thanks!
In terms of quality, I have a Zoom H6. I'm looking for something really portable that I can just lug around that is tiny but will still have good quality for all of my voice lessons and even in music classes? Which one is the best for the money in relation to that? By the way, love the extensive testing you did on both of these products.
Carrick Secorski Thanks! I'd go with the DR-22
Max Yuryev Thanks Max! I appreciate the quick reply!
is it ok to carry these guys around as I film scenery outdoors?
Did i see a frame with Blackmagic logo when you were talking about products released without the software having been completed??
Craig Hills Yes.
thanks for testing all this , it's very usefull....
The Tascam seems to be designed to be parked on a camera, with the camera like mode dial and the volume gain would point towards the camera operator. I might get one and attach it to my Nikon P7800.
thanks for your efforts good review
Thanks!
Hey! Love your channel. I've been struggling with audio issues on my own channel (this is just a personal account)...I was wondering what you would recommend for on-camera voice recording in a smaller, slightly echo-ey room, as you've noted you've had similar issues with that yourself: a shotgun mic either on the camera or on a boom, OR a lavalier plugged into something like the Tascam or Zoom H1 and synced up afterwards?
I think the easiest way is to use this. amzn.to/2eOLbO0 it comes with a really good $220-250 lav mic and is an easy option. I use it in this video and it sounds great. Not as good a shotgun mic on a boom right above my head going into a zoom H6 being synced later, but WAY easier and still sounds good. th-cam.com/video/qvsqRb5g6I0/w-d-xo.html
nobody noticed how much more WIDE stereo Tascam gives compared to zoom ? ... listen that on your headphones not on laptop ;) nice test btw! cheers!
H1 sounded like in mono compared to tascam and on my headphones i could easily feel deeper base on tascam.
Hey max, Excellent review as always but I have a few question for you. Watching this in 2015 I would first like to point out that these are both around 80$ tops on something like eBay, but their is a very slight tendency for the Zoom H1 to be slightly cheaper (Maybe 10-15$) Anyway what would you recommend I get now in 2015, the Zoom with a slightly better lav or the Tascam with a slightly cheaper lav and how would I set something like this up with a Panasonic FZ1000? I know very little about mics and how to use them with something like an FZ1000 so could you try to give me some answers please (ie: do I need a lav or a shotgun and which one do you prefer)? I currently record my audio separately with an Audio Technica AT2020+ into a laptop and as you can guess I basically am limited to indoors and its a pain to setup (Not that I really do any shooting outdoors, but it would be nice nonetheless to not have to setup my laptop to record)
Clientech Hi Clientech. It really depends on what your doing. I always prefer a Lav as you get less noise with the mic closer to your subject. I also Prefer the DR-22WL for more options it offers. This lav amzn.to/17Qe73o is fantastic for the money.
Max Yuryev
I do phone reviews mostly, and don't really want to sync my audio and use a laptop to record, but I want something with audio quality that will match the Audio Technica AT2020+ I don't know if you have ever heard samples of it but I would best compare it to a blue yeti pro with slightly better quality (I don't mind spending the extra money to get something significantly better. And is a lav the best way to go? I know there are shotguns and what not but is a lav the best way to go? I feel like its the best option because the way I do my reviews I would have to mount the shotgun backwards.
Clientech The closer you can get the mic to your subject the better the sound will be so yes I would say the lav is the best. The only reason they use shotguns for movies is they can't have a lav be seen on the actor.
Max Yuryev Oh okay that makes more sense. Is it possible to have two lavs plugged in to one recorder like the Zoom H5? and what are your thoughts on the sound quality between the H5 and H6, is it worth the extra 120$?
Clientech I think sound quality is the same your paying for the extra features. Yes you can do 2 Lavs in the H5.
Thank you mate! Very nice work. Cheers.
Hi max. I know it is an old video but The Zoom H1 has a new version called Zoom H1n more expensive but also more capable similar to this Tascam without the wifi as far as I see. But this might be even more interesting. Will you ever review the new Zoom H1n? You are the best on TH-cam.!!!
Thanks for this video! Helpful!
You look pretty confident to me :$ And for a 20 min vid, even better!
Hi Max!
Great review ! I noticed when you plugged in the lav mic into the Tascam dr22 you got a buzz issue going on, like if the ground was damaged or it wasn't plugged in all the way . Could that have been the mic or perhaps the internal circuitry of the Tascam ? I get the same issue with my dr07mk2 .... I think Tascam doesn't like certain mics in its 3.5mm hole. lol , or what do you think ?
Thanks !
***** Hi Allan, I think its my mic. I recently plugged it into the Zoom H6 that I purchased and the mic has a grounding issue.
If i just wanted something in my pocket to record audio with a lav mic, would you still recommend the Tascam? Do you think there is a big difference in sound quality? I was just thinking that maybe the Tascam might be too big to put on talent, if you need to mic them.
+c0pyimitati0n Tascam is just a bit bigger, but quality is similar. Tascam has more features which makes it worth it. If you don't need those the H1 will do fine.
Hi great video! I have a question for you, if putting either of these recorders off to the side so they are out of video frame (and just using the recorder's mic by itself ), will it pick up a person's voice still very well or does the person have to be facing straight on at the microphone?
Unless you want all the ambient sounds to be recorded too, you'll need a shotgun mic or put a lav mic on your subject.
thx u bro , this vedio can be very helpful!
Thanks, think I'm going to buy a tascam. Though since I record gaming on my pc the Zoom might be something , but I think the tascam wins anyways :)
Thank you for this video, really helped me make a decsion
Ryan McIntyre Glad to help!
the size/weight is a killer for vlogging, twice the weight? I do like the time stamp though.
Comprei essa filmadora e estou super satisfeito com ela
I just picked up a zoom h1 today. I want to record better audio when mountainbiking and thought mounting the recorder to my frame or helmet would be all I need (with a good windscreen). But I have noticed that there is a rattling sound when I shake the recorder. I wonder if this is a faulty recorder I'm having or is this something you have experienced as Well?
Canon DSLR cameras currently own, one of the 80D, stereo, with which work performing music bands clips on the street (guitar and cajon)
The fact is that, although I think the audio of them very good, especially the 80D that the mics are in front of the body, I decided to invest in a tape recorder to further improve my audio capture ...
Well, where is the question: I bought so well spoken Zoom H1 and I opted for it instead of the DR-05 because of the microphones in XY and in this case was expecting a much better audio than recorded by so badly spoken mics internal of DSLR ...
My surprise: Audio Zoom H1 was worse than the 80D ... lower and with a more muffled sound ...
SET: Both mics were in automatic mode, the same distance as the subject (since the H1 was on camera shoe) ... The only difference is that I configured the H1 to better quality WAV and camera I was recording in. MP4 (not MOV) ...
The Zoom H1 was wearing a Eneloop rechargeable battery. (I have heard that for use in burners, is not indicated rechargeable battery, is that right?)
Could you help me in what may be happening friend? Does my Zoom H1 came defective?
Thank you.
Thank you Max , very complete !
There's a video on In The setup's channel about free DAWs, alternatives, and even if you can't afford it you can "get" it. Not quite an
I am looking for an audio recorder that will easily record classes at a university and make it easy to search for the class by date time and recording name
e.g specify the name of courses e.g science101 and either on demand start the recording or preset the the time from 10:00am to 11:15am
Then be able to play by file or course name and date
Also I would want to be able to load it to a PC or mac directly not depend on wireless
Will Tascam do that? I should mention I have a Zoom H1 but it does not have those features
Honest I think the best bet got you is get a microphone that will plug into your phone, there are many for iPhone but I'm sure some for android, and then buy and app that meets your needs.
what's with the blackmagic design subliminar message at 10:01 ??
Listen to what I say right before then. I'm saying that what they do
I think it's a unfare comparison, i think the H1 is a DR-05 competitor, as the DR-22-WL to H2. I apreciatte your work and time, thanks!
Great review, thank you!
thank you so much! extremely helpful
