    @Jono Smith Do you have any videos about the correct way to apply a stencil to the skin? what products to use and how to get it done? Massive appreciation for your work as a resource for learners

    This video was very helpful! Did you use spirit brand for both types of paper? I ordered thermal paper without having a machine for it, so I think I'll need to order some of the hectograph paper for hand drawn stuff, right?

      During my apprenticeship, I was only allowed to hand stencil. I used spirit stencil paper. I had to apply a decent amount of pressure though. So its definitely possible.

    The whole redoing the placement is exactly why before u apply it u hold it up line it w maker spots and then after u can line back up to the exact points u made in the skin

    Do you think the way we hold the pencil/machine is definitive in getting nice lines? I tried the way you hold with the thumb going over the pencil and the index finger. It seems it gives a more steady grip, putting the work more on the wrist and avoiding shaky lines. Although it limits the dexterity a little. Do you agree?
    Your channel is gold, man!

    • @JonoSmithTattoo

      That’s a very interesting point you’ve made actually. It’s not something I really think about now but I remember when I first ever held a tattoo machine I couldn’t work out what the best way to hold it was. I don’t necessarily think there’s a ‘right’ way to hold it. I think whatever works for you to get nice consistent lines will be the best way. I do hold my pencil when stencilling designs like you’ve described with a finger applying pressure on the top to make sure I get a nice transfer underneath. Again, I don’t think this was a conscious thing but more of a method I’ve probably adapted naturally over time. I do tend to hold pencils and pens etc. a little weird anyway because I’m left handed. Thanks for your comment & thanks for watching!

    @3:21 @jono smith why not put the transfer paper behind the image paper and instand transfer it to the transfer paper ??.
    i do this and my mentor, and it saves me a lot of time, so just switch the 2 paper and trance the image.

    Hi these videos are great. I learned a lot through your videos. I have hectograph paper. Can I put plain paper over the hex paper and make a stencil like that?

    • @JonoSmithTattoo
      @JonoSmithTattoo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you can. You can actually use the paper then directly onto the skin to transfer the stencil.

    You mentioned a dot matrix printer. I looked on ebay and being that I'm poor and they a cheap is there a specific one that I should look for that will just copy the design I choose onto the thermal paper? Like a design that is on paper and copy it to the thermal? Or do they only work for designs off the computer?

    • @JonoSmithTattoo
      @JonoSmithTattoo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joseph Warrick There’s no specific dot matrix to do the job, they’ll all work. Using a dot matrix printer though you will need to print the design from a computer.

    I have used a lot of times a dot matrix and hectograph paper. It isn't as strong as handmade with a pencil. Is it better with thermal in the dot matrix printer?

    • @JonoSmithTattoo
      @JonoSmithTattoo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I use thermal paper in the dot matrix and it works great.

    • @rudemuinho
      @rudemuinho 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks for the answer. I was wondering what works beter in the dot matrix, the hectographic or the thermal?
      Just wanting to now if you have compared them both. Thank you anyway!

    • @JonoSmithTattoo
      @JonoSmithTattoo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I only use thermal paper in a dot matrix. I think hectograph would be too thick for it to work.

    • @rudemuinho
      @rudemuinho 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      good to know. My dot matrix printer is a cheap one with very bad resolution (240 x 120 dpi - Epson LX 300 II) and it works with hectographic, but the pressure on the stencil isn't as good as the handmade ones... so you get more copies with less effort, better accuracy for pc fonts (as you said in the video) but not the same durability in the skin....
      thank you very much

    Whats different betwee repro fx spirit classic freehand paper and repro fx classic thermal? The classic freehand does actually say thermal on the back but I don't think it is? Bought a brother thermal printer and used the freehand paper and it didn't work well at all.

    • @JonoSmithTattoo
      @JonoSmithTattoo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m pretty sure the ‘free hand’ stuff is the same as hectograph paper which is perfect fir hand drawn stencils but not so great for printers. The Classic Thermal paper is what you’re needing for the printer. You can make hand drawn ones with the thermal paper but they’ll be very weak. Thanks for watching!

    If someone has a cheap copier I could buy I’m getting old I’m 60 and tattooed all my life and like I say I had bad tendons thought I had carpo tunnel but no it’s all my tendons and you can’t operate on tendons so it’s with me for the rest of my life I don’t do a lot of tattoos no more but wen I do I find making the stencil is harder on my arm than the tattoo machines and of course I love my brass coil machine and steel tubes so you have a fair bit of weight ther I tryed using the pen style rotary but hard to teach a old dog new tricks I don’t like rotarys and never have got my custom machines from Daniel labonte in Quebec Canada ther are beautiful machines I like the weight I’m used to it so only one with a idea on a cheap stencil machine let me know I’ve just dropped a bunch of cash on auto clave and ultra sonic new tattoo bed so I can’t afford a expensive copier so If a fax machine or matrix whatever works please help me out with info I’m in Canada not one of them cheap ass monsterpoint things they are a waste of money sorry about the comments I guess I’m getting senile I guess comes with age thanks all have a great day

    The thermal papel can be used as hectograph by simply drawing on it right?

    • @JonoSmithTattoo
      @JonoSmithTattoo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can do but it's not nearly as strong as hectograph and it's also a lot thinner which sometimes makes it rip if you use it like hectograph. Thanks for watching.

      If you choose to draw on thermal paper, save the “onion” paper. You can use it also, as a stencil. Also, I never had a problem with it tearing as you draw on it, if you use a ball point pen. (Found this out by accident) lol 😂

    The only thing I don’t like a dark stencil I find a thermal paper gives me a great outline and it don’t wear out I’ve tattooed for 38 years or so and never used a machine but my tendons are bad now and I could use a machine but can’t afford I had a cheap monster point and it was junk I’ve never had a problem I cut the paper I’ve never had a problem putting the stencil on with paper I had the tracing paper it’s the big jobs that suck
