A New Way To Break Into Hollywood by Bill Duke - th-cam.com/video/OFqzhvz4V98/w-d-xo.html
In an age where everyone has a public voice...Bill Duke is one of the few that has a massage worth listening to.
Thank you to the Film Courage team and Mr. Duke.
He has a lot of energy in these interviews. He is mostly quiet on the set as director, Almost monastic. He directed Deep Cover...excellent film. He did Hoodlum. Lawrence Fishburne produced. I learned a lot working around him and his crew.
Awesome! Would love for you to check out Autism Theater Project
Bill Duke an American superstar with a ridiculous amount of common sense and wisdom.
Well played sir.
Superstar?
@@wwbuirkle
Yeah. U slow?.. Superstars are not always in the movie 🎥. Some are behind the camera and you don't even know...... Message

Have you been in 2 Arnold classic movies? No. But you sure went and saw them
I'm a grip and worked on many films genius@@KingG-d4h
I can't stop picturing him running through the jungle with a machine gun yelling "Ima have me some fun....ima have me some fun..."
+Erik Adkins lol for me its when he stabs the scorpion.
"Anytiiiiime"
Erik Adkins
Predator.
Erik Adkins Hell yea me and my football buddy’s use to act out all of those parts from Predator
"You're ghostin' us, motherfucker. I don't care who you are in the worrrld. You give our position away one more tiiime, Imma bleed you, real quiet, leave ya here. GOT IT?"
The comment about what schools teach being obsolete as it's taught rings true with me...I graduated from a fairly nice cooking school 20 or years ago. Even as I was doing co-op during my studies, the Chef I worked with was telling me that 99% of what I learned at school was out-dated, in terms of the market and that I would learn far more about actually being a working Chef by simply joining a kitchen brigade as a commis and working my 8- 14 hours every every day for a year or so. And it was true; the mechanics of actually DOING the job for 6 months after graduation taught me more practical skills than my 18 months at this school
Mike Roberts
Work and school are totally different and whatever job or career you choose, you’ll be retrained from all the stuff you tried to get a 3.0 in school.
Mike Roberts, As a culinary grad. also, I found it interesting that they sat us down and let all of us newbies know that when we graduated we would be 3 years ahead of anyone starting out in the field. However, don't leave with your diploma thinking that you are a super chef. That still had to be earned out in the field.
They teach little to nothing in the first place!
This man is great. He is smart, honest, a good actor, well-spoken, and kind. I wish I knew him in person. Bill, I love your movies!
No truer words have ever been spoken about the film industry than what Bill says here. I've been in film 44 years (and by coincidence met with Bill about doing his AFI film The Hero in 1980). Every insight he makes is spot on, exactly how it is.
Thanks. I was wondering when he went there. I did work on a few AFI projects in the early 90's and was just curious about who might have crossed paths with him.
@@seaninness334 I met with Bill in Pasadena in late spring or summer 1980 re: The Hero. My old pal Joe Garrity was his art director on that; if you track him down he will known more.
@markshostrom4942 I'm mostly out of the business now and back on the East Coast, but I'll keep it in mind. Maybe make a few inquiries. Thanks for replying.
He has made a very positive impression on me. what a tremendous person.

BEAUTIFUL INTERVIEW...CONQUER THE GOLIATH IN YOUR LIFE....NO MATTER HOW LONG IT TAKES...
I read an interview with British ex-lawyer who gave it up and became an actor who was unemployed a lot. He said his worst day as an actor was better than his best day as a lawyer.
Total crap
If acting is really part of his purpose then I believe it. However this concept is not just with acting. Life often rewards risk takers and people who believe and work towards their goals rather than working for someone doing something you hate to help that person or company achieve their goals just to be able to have some “stable” or “guaranteed” income. This whole fixed salary and employment scam hasn’t existed in the world more than 500 years, if even that. Centuries ago people traded whatever goods or services the family was involved in, nothing guaranteed day to day. If you think about it today there are no billionaires or multi millionaires that made their fortune from a fixed salary. High risk usually equals high gains… I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery ~ Thomas Jefferson
I stumbled upon Bill Duke in my youth watching Car Wash and his character had depth and meaning. I have been a fan ever since.
Bill Duke has a wonderful sense of being honest - with yourself.
80's action wouldn't been the same without Bill Duke. Awesome guy!
m4ffe Thanks, we love this interview. Glad we had the opportunity.
"Ok Goliath, my stone is not that big but I see your damn eye." That is DEEP!!!
this guy has a wealth of knowledge and experience. very good interview that's very informative
Renaissance/Entaprize Thanks, how did you discover this video?
He's Bill Duke not 'this guy'.
I can not stop watching his stuff. Amazes me from his words what he says for motivation.
You may enjoy our new full interview with Mr. Duke. We just published this one last week - th-cam.com/video/odpGdFLT8dQ/w-d-xo.html
You know you fucked up right - Bill duke
Love Bill Duke...a great mind humble soul.He should get more recognition of his legendary accomplishments...again,he is a humble soul.Peace#25
True words indeed. True words indeed. Even though security may not be as steady, the drive grows stronger to do what you want to do...what you were meant to do in life.
As a former editor in the entertainment industry I can tell you this: If you don't have the connections, if you're not willing to be humilliated, abused, and in some cases provide sexual favors, you're not going to be anybody important in Hollywood.
I love this guy! He's full of wisdom!
No doubt about that.
Every artist needs to hear his interviews. I am sure most won't heed.
This hit hard. I've been saying lately that I feel like my job will be the death of me.
I'm with you. I have a good paying job, security and benefits and all of the trappings, but I wake up most days feeling that I was meant to do something else. How does one move past that feeling.
problem is Hollywood uses 8 different actors to do every movie. favoritism is rampant. the end.
Then make your own movie and take it out of the hands of the big studios.
Its business right now they know people want to see kevin hart
Sfiso not anymore he died off in 2016
@@kevinreily2529 That's what Ben Affleck and Matt Damon did with "Good Will Hunting".
Thats GREAT ADVICE!😉 MOST PEOPLE GET BOGGED DOWN , AND I UNDERSTAND , WHY MY BROTHER IS FEARFUL, IM CONSTANTLY CHANGING TOWARDS WHAT I SEE AND ITS A LONELY ROAD ! BUT HES RIGHT IF YOU GET THERE ITS NOT MONETARY ITS SEEING YOUR WORK GET NOTICED ! PUTTING YOUR MARK ON THE WORLD OF WHAT YOU BELIEVE OR EXPERIENCED!😊😉NO ONE CAN DO THAT BUT YOU!!
Bill nails it! Security or Happiness? I love waking up and I love the fight
Thanks Bill for the honesty! I'm one of those fortunate enough to make living from his art. I heard about the high turnover in the film business. I had coworkers in Vancouver who loved and hated it. If I could make my own stories and have them come out well enough to garner a worthwhile audience, I would love it. But would the work kill me? Maybe, but then maybe I'd die happy...
for those not in the know, a nagra is a tape recording device used to record audio on set during takes. most of the sound is replaced i post production later but the nagra gives a reference
That’s why you go to Ivy League schools with professors who are in the industry or know people who are in the industry. The knowledge they teach you won’t be obsolete. Compared to a college who knows no one in the tv industry.
Pure Wisdom!!!
Bill Duke is Wisdom, Bill Duke is The Truth.
You are an big inspiration mr! I´m gonna work like a beast now on my acting career! :D
Love this guy and everything he did! He's cool and have much wisdom, much respect! great interview!
Film and Arts Education is tough because the palate changes so very often. I think.....I just remember every film school girl I dated from NYU was so stressed about nothing much, all the time.
Smart, smart man. So easy to listen to.
"Percentage of people doing what they want to be doing with their lives....." I would add that this is a pretty high bar. A more realistic bar is, "Parts of my life where I am doing what I want to be doing." To be clear, "Work" always sucks, at least at times, even if you are doing what you want to be doing. But that is why you are paid to do it, at least partially. And this is any industry. For myself, I spent a lot of my long life doing what I wanted to be doing, and a lot of my life had parts of it that I treasure to this day. But along the way was a lot of hard work, disappointment, struggle, bad mistakes/screw-ups, etc. Life can be hard, but it can also be good.
love real interviewers.
Bill Duke = Legend
Legend
He is a very Wise handsome man,I love his acting and wisdom
Great interview.
Luvie1980 Ur very beautiful i love ur look. U look like u should be famous
He's a great positive energy!
Interesting and thoughtful interview.
I love his movies ,and he is a great actor 🎉
A real actor's actor, brilliant work from him, always. I've always thought he'd be a perfect Dan Killian if they ever remade The Running Man in the true vein of Stephen King's novel
(written under pseudonym Richard Bachman)
Very humble and brilliant actor and director...
Great video, really really enjoyed this one.
Bird on a wire... the heavy with David carradine...’No Smoking in the Car’!..... Bill Duke has this presence about him!☝️
He has a look about him.. that makes you know he has suffered pain..
Bill played an 'unusual' early role in 'An American Gigolo' with Richard Gere.
He has great screen presence the camera loves certain people he’s one of them .
"its a sense of security"- not really, riding a house, car and family all one a single job that could drop you at any given moment over whatever is the biggest risk you can take.
06flighy
To me it’s the biggest risk as well but, he’s right, most people see those things as security. For them, it beats the unknown and unpredictable. The bad thing is, and this is where I disagree with him, retirement is not guaranteed. There is no real job security. There is only the illusion of it. Entitlements aren’t security either. That can be taken away as well. People view *entitlements and benefits* as God given *rights.* That’s naive thinking at best.
What an actor this man was, sadly missed
Well,I don't dream,I have OMINISM it's INHUMANLY Possible for me to needlessly overthink,I'm afraid to,I call it instinctive wisdom! Oh and the character he played on The Preditor,he cut up like Jack Jack on the Incredibles 😂😂😂😂🙏🏿
Keeeep those lines and machines hummin'.."
Great David & Goliath life metaphor.
OK...you guys need to turn up the volume. Thank God you did it here, but many of your other vids I can barely hear.

Was supposed to take his class at the Acapulco film festival but he had to cancel... Good to know he's still teaching.
Abe Spigner, Jr. Sorry you missed him. How long ago was that?
Film Courage it was the Acapulco Black Film Festival.... Wow maybe... 99? Pretty sure it was summer of 99. LONG time ago. Haha

"Here we are again, bro... Just you and me. Same kind of moon, same kind of jungle. Real number 10, remember? Whole platoon, 32 men chopped into meat... We walk out, just you and me, nobody else. Right on top, huh? Not a scratch... Not a fuckin' scratch. You know, who ever got you, they'll come back again. And when he does, I'm gonna cut your name right into him... I'm gonna cut your name into him!"
