Anyone else doing last minute revision?
heyy
Last minute? It was February when you posted that...
yup
Exams for post 16 are in Feb x
Yep
The structure of the short sections of the 5 staves creates a light hearted feel to the novella - this contrasts with the overall serious/sombre message to the readers of society of 1843 (when the play was written) to help the poorer of society. This reflects the light hearted attitude of the upper classes of society at the time, and their negligence towards the lower classes, due the widespread prejudice that they were in their own unfortunate circumstances due to no-ones faults but their own, which was of course not true. Therefore, through structure, Dickens conveys the message to the reader that the higher classes must cease their ignorance, and cooperate in an attempt to aid those less fortunate, which will inevitably benefit everyone within society.
Note: Don't write what i have put in the brackets in an exam - it is just there so you know what I have written. ^_^
@Daniel Carey lmao chill kid ur in year 7
I was wondering whether my interpretation for the novella being called a "carol" was acceptable.
The lack of rhythm and music, especially when the text focused on Scrooge's miserly ways, is symbolic of how Scrooge is disjointed from society; he does not fit into traditional values and pushes away any form of human interaction. Carols being inextricably linked to Christian values can show that the Scrooge's of the world have caused people to forget the meaning of Christmas: a time of rejoicing and social interactions with others. ( side note: Carols being a form of holy music insinuate joy and purity, both of which is not present during the focus of the text being on Scooge).
hi can u tell me how u write ur mr bruff notes please? do u do it by writing notes on paper , write it on flashcards or on mindmaps ? thanks...
@@kiraxopatel4656 its late but i usually do it on flashcards as mind maps

Currently revising for English Lit as it was recommended by youtubers and my own english teacher, in the process of making mindmaps! My first time watching Mr Bruff :)
Great!
I take 'ignorance' to mean people like Scrooge. They are ignorant of the plight of the poor, seeing laziness as the cause of poverty, and misconstruing the actions of the thieves as that of all the poor.
Tommy Scott I take Want to mean Scrooge as well; his ‘avarice and hard-dealings’
Exactly. They both symbolise Scrooge and by extension the rich and greedy.
Lol, can I use that for an essay?
@@Fun4u5678123 Yeah, of course
Good luck tomorrow everyone. I know I'm fucked😂 and good luck to my fellow geographers
Sameeeee XD good luck to you too, i know i need it. wish you the best results come august
James Trousdale I'm a geographer gonna hate being locked in a room😂😂
James Trousdale I've literally done no geography revision pls help
geography is easy, just remember always use data manipulation for the Qs where it gives you info, and always have 3 points in a six mark q. bang bang easy a*. english lit on the other hand...
i'm sorry , but geography is not as easy as that. you need to learn 23 case studies inside and out and not even all of them come up. there are 6 sections and 2 exams. yeno what why am i even making counter points i get A* in geography anyway XD
Really helpful sir, one improvement would be that it would be really helpful if with every point you go over you link it back to structure.

@@arakurd6351 how do short staves convey light heartedness?
@@Paul-iq8bu im pretty sure thats what MrBruff said but idk how
@@arakurd6351 Yeah he just stated it without explaining why. In my exam today, I said that the fact that its called a christmas Carol shows that dickens wanted to spread the message of the novella nationwide to inact change, as christmas carols were sung all over England.
@@arakurd6351 bro THANK YOU im using this rn
How do you comment on structure in a Christmas carol
could you create an analysis video on the Paper 1 and Paper 2 for 2018 English Literature
How could you talk about symmetry being used in the structure to bring out the themes?
Victoria kiljfds could you elaborate please

MrBruff to the rescue!
i'm doing my dec mocks...and it's last year's question! does anyone remember the AQA English literature paper 1 romeo + Juliet and Christmas carol question? please!!!
While you explain your points, I like to pause the video and turn what you said into a paragraph with quotes. Though, for this one, I'm not sure what other quotes I could embed:
Dickens three-ghost-structure used in 'A Christmas Carol' not only seems strange for the time it is written - society at the time was highly religious and the idea of the supernatural was ridiculed - but it seems as though Dickens was trying to set the plot as an ironic joke. Firstly, the definition of a "stave" is each 'paragraph' used in a Carol. The fact that the term "stave" is used to describe each 'chapter', rather than the term 'chapter' reflects the irony and introduces the humour within the novella, since it is call "A Christmas Carol". Furthermore, Dickens use of "ghosts" may be acting as a lure: people begin the novella and find it entertaining - they believe there is no way that a simplistic, ridiculous plot like this could ever have a serious ending and therefore feel as though they're not being lectured. As the novella progresses, and Tiny Tim is introduced, the audience learn that Tiny Tim is "dying", and therefore see the horrible effects that a post-industrial society has on a single child. Shakespeare has made them feel comfortable and at ease with the novella, before tearing this apart and secretly lecturing them. They only realise this once the novella has been fully read.
Could anybody help me out?

Last minute revision😬

Very cool bro
Marley tells Scrooge that the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come will visit him when "the last stroke of Twelve has ceased to vibrate." That must mean that The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come will appear at 12am, not 1am as mentioned in the video at 3:58. Right?
The last stroke of exactly twelve o'clock. In other words, when it is twelve o'clock, the clock goes ding dang dong. At the end of the dong, the ghost appears. So, a few seconds after 12 oclock
Michael Ross Thanks for confirming. So I'm assuming that Mr Bruff made a mistake by saying 1am instead of 12am then?
Kill me now... good luck everyone!
hey!! i was just wondering how you would include the analysis of the title in the essay? - what could you link it to?
How may paragraphs should be written
LastSon “how long is a piece of string?” That’s how my English teacher always answers that question.
I would suggest to write about 4 or 5 paragraph. I suggest to use PEE/PEA or even PEASH (point,evidence-quote-, analysis, speculation, historical context)
One thing to point out, Fred is Fan's (Scrooge's deceased sister) son and so would not have the surname of Scrooge
Fred's father clearly had a different surname since Fan and her husband werent obviously relatives. In this case, Fred took his father's surname; not his mothers'.
8 years later and im watching last day before my exam. goodluck everyone!
Can you add these points in the essay for the exam? And how?
yep
Have you done any videos or written anything on Hamlet? Also spectacular channel:)!!

Sayed Sayed lol
thank you so much~
No problem.
Literally at work rn washing up n listening to this video, exam tomorrow morning lol
Watch this at 1.5x if u in hurry
why does scrooge represent both the upper, stubborn class ans the middle, i care class. ???
no not Fred, scrooge and fezziwig. Fred scrooge and fezziwig. Scrooge being freds last name. I got confused with it too.
Oh XD can you tell i am failing... thanks :)
Fred’s last name wouldn’t be Scrooge cos his mum’s maiden name is scrooge, so Fred must have his dad’s last name.

I will honour Christmas with all my heart
I thought a Christmas Carol (As opposed to a pagan carol that the practice derived from) was a song with a story and moral message (We three kings. Good King Wenleslas Looked out, etc.). Could it not be therefore that Dickens was likening his novella to just such a Carol? Seems uncomplicated to me and not at all surprising.
never heard about pagan carols
Apparently, the Church appropriated the practice as a means of stamping out the pagan songs that were sung at their festivals. They Christianised their music and took it over. Probably a good thing they did. Those pagans were brutal.
