      Exactly if you say you don’t need training and continue to mess up then you definitely getting fired or placed doing something else. Most likely fired though.

    • @officialdieselreaper8845
      @officialdieselreaper8845 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Exactly! If he isn't going to accept any training, he doesn't need the job! I've been doing Landscaping work since I was 16, but I always accept any training offered because in the Landscaping business there is always something to learn! No day is repetitive. One day you could be mowing a yard, the next laying down mulch. Don't be afraid to accept help from someone who has experience in the industry!

    • @Tylnorton
      @Tylnorton 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@officialdieselreaper8845 Exactly. I've done some yard work off and on since I was 13 and if I were to work at a landscaping company, I'd gladly take the training so I can get better at it. I'm heading in the marine industry and I just finished my Mercury Outboard Training. I'm now Mercury Outboard certified and I certainly hope I get on the job training so I can learn even more, get better at it, and get familiar with the engines and tools rather than doing things right off the bat. That kid refused to do training and kept messing up the customer's lawns.

      The new guy clearly didn't want to do that type of work, it was a mutual parting of ways. It's not that some people can't do this kind of work its all about desire. Jobs like landscaping, warehouse work, or traffic flagging just to name a few can be done successfully by anybody with the physical ability as long as their heart is in it. There are a lot of people who are only in it for the money and those are the ones who don't make the cut.

    If an employee says that he knows everything is basically because he's hungry for work. Teach him and communicate with new employees of how and what you expect. I wouldn't never let go anyone on the first day, I usually give them a week to see how they do. A lot of time you can get non experience employees and you can teach them your way. Guys that have experience and start working with you don't like to be thought your way or listen to what you have to say because they think they know more than you.. so I prefer someone with no experience and teach him my ways how I like the jobs to get done. Plus by staying in the truck and just starting at your employer makes them not concentrate on there task bro.

    This is a great example of what a shitty boss looks and acts like. It is your business, your equipment and your show, but you basically set the trap for the kid and let him fall in it. You literally watched him fail. And then blamed it all on him. It doesn't matter if he said he knows it all. Show him that he doesn't and set the standard.
    Fix what you need to fix and work on making him the type of employee you need, instead of hoping that person falls into your lap. Never once in my 20 years of business have I encountered an employee that didn't need any amount of polish.

      Hire a foreman first off let him hire and run his crew. Obviously he hasn’t found anyone worthy but if you pay off the books or nothing good with benefits and raises. Those are the employees you get. They think residential lawn cutting is easy because they cut their own lawn growing up. Some guys are ready to go home when they know how many lawns are on that days route. These guys run them into the ground , (advice to guys going fit jobs on these type of crews). expect to work till there’s no more sun & 6 days a week. and you won’t feel overwhelmed. Also if existing employees truly wanted to help their “company” and know they need the help. They Take the time to help the guy. Instead They finish a lawn pie into the truck. Drive 5 minutes and joke around, pretending it’s fun. Then “ok only 20 more guys, Finish the 20. Ok 2 more and that’s it! “ Lol. If that’s the kind of company you’re at unless you desperately need the cash, get out

    cutting lawns isn't like cutting your lawn. when you are doing it for a living you have to know what youre doing, because every lawn is diff and you have to be very vigilant by making sure you arent cutting over something like dog chains, sprinkler heads, pipes sticking up from the ground etc... ontop of that you have to finish the lawn in a neat and timely manner, because you can't afford to spend too long on one yard when you're doing 100+ lawns per week. cutting lawns for a living is hard work, it's a grind and many people who never cut lawns for a living before don't truly understand how much hard work and grind it is to cut 20+ lawns in a day every day for a week.

    As a successful businessman, you expect perfection from your employees. That goal is nearly always unattainable. And prospective employees are always going to 'puff' some in an attempt to sell themselves. No one knows everything or performs to the exact expectations of others including their employer. Then too, standing and watching is just plain creepy. Better to be busy and peep while working, or go on an errand then come back and inspect. Any deviations in quality can be rationally discussed upon completion of your inspection. I notice you make fun of this fellow a lot and sort of laugh down your nose at him when in conversation. Not cool. Employees don't want stress to go along with the work they have to do. Try to go back and watch your videos to see what I'm referring to. A casual but firm manner of talking with him is preferable for both of you. If you have overall concern about throttle speed, etc, go over that with him between jobs and let him know the reason for your concern. And lastly, don't expect employees to last forever. People are not like they used to be many years ago. They have options. They will pick up and leave for any reason. Know that when you hire them. And remember to keep your cool and don't let the anxiety get the best of you. You can always go back over a job if necessary and that is easier than replacing employees.

  • @mediocremang
    @mediocremang 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    i know i'm late to the party but to all of you who think this man's a bad boss/leader/manager, and/or asshole:
    if you watched the video, he mentions wanting to explain things to the new guy, to which new guy basically replied "i know what i'm doing". now, the first few days of employment are mostly a probationary period, to judge a potential employees character, reliability and if at all applicable; competence - which in this case applies, because the new guy said he knows what to do.
    a good manager, at that point, will then usually decide to step away, because if the statement is true and you give the new employee a longass speech regardless, you're likely to give off the impression that you're either a.) ignorant or b.) take the new person for an idiot/liar. so instead of starting off on the wrong foot, you simply step back and watch from afar, preferably without looking like you're tryhard spying on the new employee, in order to confirm that they're a.) competent and b.) in line with your expectations.
    according to the boss, the guy's work was NOT up to par quality-wise, which is already off-putting considering the employee's claim of being an experience worker. he also mentioned that there was a time-related issue, but (wisely) pointed out the fact that this is something that can be solved in due time by developing proper routines with people that are legitimately inexperienced, BUT want to do good!
    at the end of the day, due to circumstances, the boss did exactly what you should do with a new employee. interview, estimate level of experience according to statement during interview, and lastly; teach or evaluate. different measures for different scenarios, you simply cannot go through the same routines regardless of these previous steps, THAT is bad management.
    finally, whoever got his shit into a twist and call the guy a "bad" boss because he wasn't out there working... you're getting a very small sample size here, for starters, and secondly, with different positions come different responsibilities. your boss's job is not to be out there with you 24/7 and entertain you and/or do YOUR job. a good boss knows when it's time to delegate and lead, but also when it's time to plain and simply help out in the field and won't think twice about getting his hands dirty when it's necessary, show you that he's there for you when it really counts - but you really got it twisted if you think a person at a higher level/paygrade should do your job, in addition to his job, and that anything but that is lazy - that's just a naive mentality, to be frank. don't like how that works out? leave and find a place that suits you better then, although i can tell you right now you'll have a hard time finding a place where everything and everybody accommodates your way of thinking/working.

    I remember when I was a teen, my dad taught me how to use the weedeater and gave me an area to clean up. He didn't mention that I didn't need to go full throttle all the time and I ended up snapping the crankshaft. I do not see working in lawn care in my future

    They love to use the string too short so it breaks off and if they can't take direction, they are history.

    I've used self propelled Honda x 1, wipper snipper x 1, and a spare push mower, and done 14 suburban lawns on a full day. For anyone that is new to this, and isn't fit, having manual equipment can drive the life out of you by the end of the day. These lawns are huge compared to what I used to do. I would never go back to mowing lawns. One guy I worked with ended up with a worn out knee after a career mowing. He paid off he's home over the years. Bare in mind I am in AU, and equipment is extremely expensive. The average lawn charge is between $40 - $50. Many use Walker ride-ons, but all the small guys are pushing mowers around. It's still viable, but AU taxes on small business choke business to death now, let alone being able to legitimately/affordably employ someone during the Summer months. That new guy in this video isn't thinking about the task at hand. He was exhausted by the end of the day, and could hurt himself. I bet he was sore the following day!
