[Hudson-Bergen Light Rail] HBLR trains in Jersey City and on the Conrail River Line (July 2023)

  • The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail is a light rail system in Hudson County, New Jersey, across the Hudson River from New York City. Contrary to its name, it doesn't go to Bergen County. Yet. It does go to North Bergen, which is actually south of Bergen County, but that doesn't really count, does it...
The HBLR primarily makes use of former railway rights of way, including for its tunneled section. Bergenline Avenue is one of the few stations that requires elevators to reach platform level. Within Jersey City it has a very curvy alignment full of sharp 90 degree turns, and is generally slow, but there are still strategic grade separations (albeit still slow).
There are two core services that operate, and another on weekdays only (the single unit Tonnelle Av-Hoboken service).

Never even enters Bergen County - What a scam of a name - should be renamed the Hudson lightrail! Time to build that extension to Bergen County!

For a significant time, I thought the HB stood for Hoboken because why would the line be named after a place it doesn't go to?
(Naturally, there are other similar situations elsewhere, e.g. the Tojo Line doesn't reach Gunma, etc, but this is the one closest to home)

Originally in the 1990s when they were still planning the line, it was actually called the Hudson-Jersey City Light Rail. Both Union and Bergen County wanted in on the project initally. The name was changed to the Hudson-Union-Bergen (HUB) Light Rail. Then the real estate market in NJ boomed the old railroad right-of-ways the line was suppose to use all of sudden had all this opposition to the project. On the Elizabeth end, they couldn't find funding to build a bridge over Newark Bay. (The Elizabeth portion would've basically revived the Bayonne Scoot in Light Rail form). So Union County pulled out whole Bergen County remained onboard. Now the name was shortened to Hudson-Bergen Light Rail. This remained this way until Tenefly in 2008 threw a massive stink that got the Anti-Rail Governor's attention and he effectly took the Bergen County portion of the plan out back and gave it the Ol' Yeller Treatment. So we were left with only the Hudson portion of the system and by the time the Tenefly extension was killed, the trains were already rolling with the HBLR moniker. Their logic is why change it now, our foot is already in our mouth.
