As a native New Yorker I can confirm to anyone unfamiliar with "upstate" this designation does NOT apply to Scarsdale, which is nothing but a very upscale suburb of NYC.

Agree, New York City folks think all of Upstate NY is just a few miles up the Hudson River. They have no idea about even farther north, so called Northern NY, like Watertown, Tupper Lake, Massena, Malone, Ogdensburg, Plattsburgh… they’ve heard of Lake Placid and maybe the Thousand Islands. When you think you live at the center of the known universe, geography knowledge is too much to expect

Grew up in Kingston and did residential construction for many years there. You have the same attitude as many , especially the newly arrived "Cityots" : I'm here ! Now shut the door! I don't want anything to change! In my area because of IBM's downsizing people had depressed or flat housing costs for well over a decade. You can't have affordable, and restrict supply, Basic rules of supply and demand. The best you can do is develop sensibly, as in no one group gets everything they want. I remember telling my fellow 8th grade history class that they had no clue how lucky they were to be living where we were. (In 1974!) They didn't believe me! They ,like me, were kids, and hadn't lived any where else yet. Sorry for my kvetching but I think we both love what we have.

Downtown Poughkeepsie is in sad shape, but the suburbs and small villages in the area are real nice. Many in the area like to keep it the way it is and not have NYC people move in. Metro North and Amtrak serve the area and the walk across the old RR bridge spanning the Hudson is spectacular. Never thought it would happen, but it did get done.

At one time before air travel, people from NYC spent the summer in the Catskills. Large hotels were built and then more and more started going to Florida and the Catskills were forgotten except for the hunter, fishermen etc. It has changed somewhat now as many "city folks" have discovered whats up beyond the suburbs of NYC. Land prices have gone up, and many locals have been priced out of the area. But there still are many rural areas in the Catskills.

I can think of another town not mentioned, The city of Corning / Painted Post NY, where many Corning Inc. executives call home, including the CEO of the company. Homes here average slightly over $250,000 and can sell for as much as $2 million. I'm not sure what the average income is here, but with so many Corning Execs, it's probably quite high.
The community is within 20 minutes of Keuka and Seneca lakes, where there are many wineries, distilleries and breweries. Corning also has two wonderful museums, CMOG (Corning Museum Of Glass) and The Rockwell western Museum. Strolling down Market Street is an event in itself, where there are many many quaint shops and dozens of wonderful restaurants. The Gaffer District also has many planned events throughout the year, including Sparkle, which is held every Christmas Holiday. Honestly, there is just too much to list, but I can say from personal experience, having lived here my entire life, it is a wonderful community and I couldn't imagine living anywhere else. In a word I would say it is down right special.

He did all the work for the clubhouse there and by extension, whenever a resident was making a private party, they'd call ABC Party Rentals. Point is, I can affirm that when approaching the gate, the guard was fuly aware of and expecting your arrival. I can additionally confirm that the houses there are on another level. Tuxedo Park is all old US money. Most of the [named] mansions there were built in the late 1800s. The money and influence found therein, is the type that fund presidential campaigns (probably all liberal democrats- that enjoy the tax loopholes that were designed specifically for their type of wealth). Ive personally seen a picture laid out on one piano - among the family frames - a picture of that homeowner shaking hands with Bill Clinton.
