    Your last reason was so interesting - I had never thought of it before! But I definitely have experienced that reading more Victorian Literature begets more love for Victorian Literature.
    Happy Victober, Katie!

    I have been looking forward to Victober so much this year. I often find Victorian literature to be comforting -- even though the period and novels were anything but. I think its because though the problems described in the books were quite serious and real they are often problems in which we have seen advances if not solutions. This gives me hope that we can overcome the seemingly intractable problems of today.

    • @katiejlumsden
      @katiejlumsden  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I find it comforting too - I wonder if it's because I read lots of it as a teenager so I find it nostalgic like other people find their old childhood favourites :)

    I finally got into Elisabeth Gaskell so i am reading crandford. i started it in sept. and now on chapter 3. then my load book from the library
    is north and soth . i got no father than chapter 4 in the north and south novel.that i am going to read it again. once it comes in at my library.
    classic novels that i love to read are great to get an idea on how people lived, worked,and how the classes differ.

    All your loves for Victorian literature I’m seeing as I read Trollope’s Can You Forgive Her? From other videos I get the impression that, while you love the Victorians, you’re very modern and contemporary in your reading tastes. Keep up the fine work, Katie! Talking about important things (literature) in a genial yet compelling way!

    I agree with ALL that u said! 💛 I want to do MA in Victorian Literature because I teach people to write SAT’s in my country, and I think that these books help to develop a “social sense”, afterall, the authors talk about all those society issues! Great video 🥰

    Such a great introduction into Victober! I completely agree with everything you said. I love the way Victorian novels make you fall in love with them often in a slow, subtle way. You slowly get to know characters, and maybe feel a little bored. And then you reach a point where suddenly you just absolutely love it!

    Thank you for affirming some of the countless reasons Victorian literature is the BEST. And I'm American, lol. Another huge reason I adore Vic lit is that there is often an underlying positive, spiritual current that counters the rigid religious morals and stereotypes. For example, Thomas Hardy consistently demonstrates a mystic, universal, dare I say yogic?, force that just fills my soul. ❤❤❤ Even dark, gothic lit has some beautiful spiritual insight that transcend the confines of religion, imo. Thank you for your wonderful insight!

    I haven't had a chance to pick up a book yet today but this video has me SO excited to get stuck into my TBR!
    I really enjoy the way some Victorian novels really take their time to get into the plot too, and I don't think I would have realised this if I hadn't read a lot of Victorian literature last October as I don't think I would have picked up on that style without reading a lot at once to see the pattern.
    I love the writing too and find it very funny, though I am not sure how much of that is intended and how much is reading it through a 21st Century lens but I enjoy it either way! Great video 😊

    This will be my first Victober as a Booktuber , I began with "The Star" by H G Wells on audiobook... which seems a rather unVictorian way of accessing it...maybe I should have found it on a wax cylinder or something... "Little Dorritt" is waiting on my shelf for me to finish the wonderful "Dombey and Son". I also hope to read some of the writings of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, even if Dickens was critical of their work (interestingly his daughter Kate Dickens, a painter herself, posed for John Everett Millais on a number of occasions). I need to read Elizabeth Gaskell sometime. Thanks for the inspiration, now I have to go and take Diogenes for a walk...

    Your love of Victorian lit is circuitous for sure. 🤗📚 Thank you for sharing. I'm fairly a new reader to Victorian lit. I've read some Dickens, Stevenson, Bronte's, H.G. Wells and I'm sure a few others. But the many popular books on booktube I do not think I've read. I think I'm more familiar with American authors of this time period. Now that I think of it, I don't think many booktubers discuss. hmm 🤔

    The 19th century was the century where the novel came into its own, largely driven by rising literacy rates and a growing middleclass who could afford to buy them. Also improved printing and publishing technology I assume helped. You get some of the very first children's books too like Alice in Wonderland, Treasure Island and the Jungle Book.
