    Lost 39 lbs since Feb 26 walking, cycling, diet and cpap (sleep), I've seen a huge difference in speed riding the same course 3x a week. I own a cheap aluminum road bike but our local pro shop said not to invest any money into making it lighter and go for a carbon road bike and upgrades. In the mean time, doc needs to see another 135lbs (61 kilos) gone...

      Nice man, keep it up! I’m still on my old aluminum bike and figured there was no reason to get a lighter bike while I could stand to lose 30-40lbs myself.

      Keep it going fella. I lost 15kg (20%) in a year. So much easier.
      I agree with the shop, go full carbon , and don't do cheap cheap lol. Trek/scott/giant with 105/Ultegra. World of difference.

    Losing body weight (from fat) has a snowball effect on you. (Been there, still doing that). If you have excess fat, it is not just the same thing as a weighted vest.
    Excess fat hurts your sustained power, as your heart and lungs are overworked from the excess fat. You are also more sensitive to heat.
    There is also the aerodynamics, the position, the saddle discomfort and possibly chaffing, overheating and excess sweat ....
    I would trade my fat weight for a weighted vest any day !

    This is not a real comparison. Losing body weight in reality means the heart won’t have to perfuse that extra bit of body fat and your body should be more efficient. This is definitely not the same as putting on or taking off a weighted vest…

    • @quickreviewchannel6931
      @quickreviewchannel6931 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      So basically they should have used up weeks or even months to put on weight which would have made not much to be noteable on performance differences in the test. Plus what you say could result in them having more muscle mass. So in reality what you say is pointless as it would have token too long to make the video and would make a very insignificant impact to the results.

      Another thing to consider is when you lose weight from yourself “in the correct way”, you tend to get fitter as a result and also able to sustain power for longer.
      I’ve lost 7st in the last two years and I can put out more watts for longer and obviously a hell of a lot faster… I did also buy a new fancy bike. But I’m sure that didn’t make that much difference

    I've recently gone on a bit of mission to get myself back to where I was and, in eight weeks have shed 11 KG. It struck me that the weight I've lost is actually more than the weight of my bike. So (probably over-simplifying this). We've probably all got far more potential of shedding weight from us than we have from ourselves because I'm still losing weight - and the equivalent of my whole bike has already gone.

    I've been training for triathlon for nearly three years now. I live in Finland and ever since I started to train more with other athletes around here I've discovered that they actually use even eight zones: if a HRM (mine is Garmin) reports five, they split the three middle zones - Low Aerobic, High Aerobic and Threshold - into two, calling them (actually in Finnish, but I'm giving a similar logic in English here) like LA1, LA2, HA1, HA2, T1 and T2. This is so prevalent that it's taken up in discussions all the time, and also used by coaches, which is why I've adopted some of it to my own training as well. I have found splitting especially the LA zone into two to be somewhat beneficial: previously I've often ended up just spending the majority of my training time only few beats below my HA zone lower limit (because everyone knows that doing LA exercises always feels soooo slow), but now I'm sometimes trying to force myself to stay on the lower half of my LA zone instead, to really force it to be very easy and relaxed.

    Body weight is metabolic. It not only weighs you down, it also takes up some of you metabolic capacity.

    I have gained 10kg in the past year. I came from a background of restricting and under fuelling. I now find hills a lot harder and my power has not caught up with my weight gain. However I am healthier and happier and hopefully more sustainable. Weight loss is not necessarily a good thing!

  • @aldude9511
    @aldude9511 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I know if I lost some weight it would help with climbing and aerodynamics as my belly wouldn't be as big and I would be able to get lower at the front. Currently, the legs are hitting the belly when in aero position.

    Power to weight is applicable ONLY for climbing. It doesn't factor in on flat, downhill, headwind, tailwind, crosswind, rain, or cold. However, body weight does factor in every step of the run.

    • @ljadf
      @ljadf 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think "power to weight is applicable only to hills" strictly true, the power to weight difference will be markedly less noticeable, but you'd still be faster on a flat if you weighed less for the same power... drag through friction would factor more prominently from tyres, although you can store more power, every time you break you lose more of it to heat if you're heavier, the only real benefit is for downhill.

    • @richhold7775
      @richhold7775 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ljadf For a given amount of power gravity will factor into the top speed achieved when going up hill or down hill. On a flat surface gravity doesn't help or hinder. If gravity isn't a factor then weight isn't a factor. On a flat surface all the power is going to overcome friction losses and drag.

    She produced only 190 watts, he produced almost 500w???? They're both equally trained athletes, right? How can the difference be that big? Is it because she's a woman? I can't say with certainty but I vaguely remember the differences between manon and the other presenters of GCN being a lot smaller.

    • @trepidati0n533

      Genetics, Gender, and possibly the amount of current training the individual has.

    • @RoScFan
      @RoScFan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@trepidati0n533 I would agree. Except: Genetics - she won some triathlons right? So her genetics should be bove average. Gender - hence my comment about manon; normally women are weaker than men, but cycling seems to be a sport both genders can do similar performances. Women are still less powerful, but NOT less than half as strong.
      and possibly the amount of current training the individual has - most likely explanation but as I said - arent they both equally well trained? Or has heather fully retired from competitions while mark is planning on doing competitions soon? Heather was close to the birtish champion in swimming, so I tend to think she is trained. So.... none of the explanations fit, hence my comment. I am truly shocked at that 190-450 watt difference and i cannot explain it.

    • @F1tch1c
      @F1tch1c 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know Heather always says the bike is her weakest discipline - she is an amazing runner and swimmer though. With FTP - mine looks crazy low compared to my husband when we road cycle together and I am usually the lead rider. It is better to look at watts/kilo - we are both sitting on between 2.2 - 2.5 w/kg so because I am lighter my watts don't need to be as high. (If I could get my power as high as my husbands I would be stoked and I would also do better at a lot of triathlons !)
