Small Irish terriers were used to breed the Norwich, which was then crossed with the Border collie and Cairn terrier.
Drop ears and prick ears were the two original variations of the breed, which were interbred and shown together.
The original, prick-eared variety became known as the Norwich, and the original, drop-eared variety became as the Norfolk.
