- SWIV was a 2D vertically-scrolling Shoot 'em up game original released in 1991 for the Commodore Amiga and Atari ST 16-bit home computer formats.
The game was considered a spiritual successor to Tecmo arcade game Silkworm, which The Sales Curve) had previously converted to home computer formats in 1989. SWIV is an unofficial sequel, but the game's heritage is evident from the game design whereby one player pilots a helicopter, and the other an armoured Jeep.
Fascinating reading the comments here, thank you all (to those who have no idea who I am, I wrote the music for SWIV). To answer some of the questions ..... I actually used the Depeche Mode sample from a fellow Amiga (and now legendary games composer) Jesper Kyd since we were both in the same demo scene group 'The Silents', and were swapping sample disks in the post. Back then I didn't have any sort of synth or sampler, everything was begged, borrowed or pilfered from others! I didn't know till later where the sample came from (and technically this is full track from the demo it was originally written for 'Decimation', rather than the version used on the game which had it removed). And to answer the questions about out of tune samples and general weirdness later on (I think @ 2:10), it was simply because at the time I had no way of retuning samples at all. These were written on Noisetracker in summer of 1990 before they added the built in sample editor and way before Protracker. I sampled the orchestral hit from a Vaughan Williams piece of music from my Mum's tape! Now I hear it is sooooo out of tune I cringe! Back then my ears must've been blocked :-)
Dude i love your branding trackings, reminds me on speedball II and lotus III on amiga... if love your tunes... if your need a game, im your game artist ;) greets Flint
(and of course chaos engine I+II)
Internet is sooo amazing! I'm gald I can say "thanks!" one of guys who partially made my childhood ;) I played this game a lot when I was young and I loved intro thanks to that tune, so... thanks! :D
Was listening to "People Are People" and searched "swiv depeche mode" to check. Glad I did, thanks for the info. One of the many Amiga games I used to boot just to listen to the soundtrack!
O.O OMG.. I knew the name wasn't new to me... Not only have I come accross the man who created this tune for one of my childhood games, now it turns out you're the same Barnabas credited as Barn for the Medievil OST *_* I mean, I remember doing some research to find out who those two guys credited as Bob & Barn in Medievil credits actually were, but never made the connection! I grew up with SWIV, and Medievil is the game that made me buy a PSX, and I finally find out the author of their music (I have both on my walkman!) is the same person! May I say how much pleased and honored I am to meet you? Seriously sir, you rock! T_T

Thank you fella's for such lovely words, it's so heartwarming to read how much you all cherish the memories that this game (and music!) seem to have evoked. And yes, I did indeed write the music for MediEvil and it's various sequels. In fact that sort of fantasy comedy sound Bob and I spent ages learning how to do in MediEvil has just been applied to a film score we're in the midst of completing for a film called Amstardam, look it up on Facebook if you want to see some amusing pics and some of the orchestral sessions, have we improved over the years, I do hope so.... :-)
Loved it as a child and still love it. Sometimes I didn't start the actual game so i could listen to the intro music.
You and me both, bro
Me 3!
Me 4! But I also didnt run the game coz I wanted to see again that bad ass art of the helicopter.... that was so awsome, that wide look back than looked so futuristic and unbeatable, I felt that I became a pilot of that beast when I played it.
🕹💘
@@xixaoxaoxi yes the blueprints just made it more real and immersive.
Sometimes I start the game only to listen the OST.
On of the best track I remember from my Amiga.
Cheers from France.
FabulousFab same
Indeed !!!
same mainly just this one
Never heard of this game or song. What a banger. This proves that I don't just love retro console music because of nostalgia for the songs I grew up with. A lot of pieces are really amazing, like this one.
Andrew Barnabas...Great Work!!! in 1990, was a 17 y o,as you, and after high school time...the whole afternoon was passed on Amiga! You're not only an important part of amiga staff, but for our old guys today....a MYTH of informatic hystories...so i have today this track and other amiga music on my mp3 key in my car!!! the amiga legends will never die!!!
my and my brother were unstoppable at this game.
good memories listening to this again and still sounds brilliant to this day.
Thank you!
Totally agree ❤ nostalgia 😢
@@theguillaume73 Cheers from 17 yr old me 🙂
I am so happy to salute the man who created this inspiring and mind-blowing music experience to my ears back when I was a schoolkid! Your music is awesome! I would often load the game just to listen to the track. I had never before the privilege to thank in public somebody who gave the Amiga and its fans this great gem! Thank you Sir!
Thanks, humbled!
The epicness of this never gets old. What a time that was to be alive!
PAULA = one of the best sound chips ever designed in computer history.
This game was so advanced for its time. There was a ton of tricks it utilised - high sprite counts, background disk loading, over-scaning. And the intro was just awesome :-)
The last great schmup I remember playing.
Hi Andrew, i'm glad to find you here on youtube. I was 13 when i played Swiv on my old Commodore Amiga, it was 1991 !! I liked a lot this music and i like it too now. After over 20 years, i still remember this song, one of the best memories of my youngness. So, many thanks Andrew !! Very well done !!
the sfx in this game were fucking amazing
this is so good, especially that "out of tune" part.
This is an "imperfection" that makes the tune nearly perfect...
This version was also used on the acorn Archimedes version. Loved it, still have the original box and floppy for it!
thanks for this channel, been trying to remember the name of this game just for the music to it and all of a sudden it popped up on youtube lol, bit freaky really as i never searched for it but there it was lol, thanks!!!
i think this is the most memorable tune on amiga when i was a kid, and it's a banger
How many times did I load this game up just to listen to this music (and the intro from Turrican and Turrican 2)
One of the best 2D Shooters ever made. Thanks for showing :)
awesome tune :-) I copied this onto cassette and listen to it on the way to school haha
Holy moley, you wrote the score to SWIV at such a young age? Damn. I remember spending hours upon hours with this game, before quitting out of sheer rage after not getting anywhere near through it.
a student made this several years ago. still awesome tune.............. i got an amiga with 1meg ram AND THE DISK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glad you think that way. Seems like you feel the spirit of these games. One little thing: Amiga is not a console per say. It's a personal computer (16 bit - i.e. A500 and 32 bit - i.e. A1200, A4000).
Never thought I'd hear this tune again. God bless youtube!
This song was part of my childhood man! :)
Somehow reminds me of "People are people" from Depeche Mode. Such a great game and great music!
yes!, the drum samples must be from People are people atleast :)
Holy shit, the first 50 seconds sounds like dubstep. These guys could see into the future :)
OMG how did I forget SWIV? I LOVED this game and the music! Adding to my wishlist. Going to (re)-buy an Amiga soon. Wanting to find a mint in box.
the intro of the song is so awesome
Nostalgia 😢
i sometimes put the game on just to listen at the music...thank you for inspiring my youth
GOD I LOVED THIS GAME
When I was a kid, I thought passing this game takes 2-3 hours. Played today, what a surprise when I done it in 40 minutes.... 40 minutes back to '90s :)
Someone should make a song based on the intro! I mean, the song itself is good, but the intro is actually really good - it has a deep, industrial vibe to it.

I loved this song Andrew, really. Just wanted you to know. Every time i hear it (yes, i have the mp3 version on my ipod, along with others from Bitmap Bros) i start smiling. So... well, I thank you. Good luck with all your new projects :-)
Amazing!!!! What a great memories!!! Thanks, Andrew!!
Your tunes still sound inside my head lots of years after!!!
Thanks a lot!
Every time I played SWIV I just couldn't skip the intro because of the music. This tune is sooo epic :)
this music brings great depth of expression, salute the composer this is healing to the soul just off the memories of carefree childhood shit
It sounds like a Depeche Mode made a music for it. I love the sound, made on Amiga.
Well there are samples from Depeche Mode's People Are People :)
d vibe (swe) holy shit you’re right love this tune!
SHEEET, I remember this game, and that music bought back some memories.
NICEE!!
i've played this game as "Firepower 2000" on Super Nintendo O.o
never knew this was the original one.
@Stevieboy74
Hi. The guys name was Andrew Barnabas. His Amiga handle was Nightshade. Check out Global Gladiators and Cool Spot. Shite conversions, but his music always rocked...
good to know there are people like you
Fantastic. The only thing better than this, is loading the game from floppy on one of my A500s, and listening to it that way.
Ah, with that df0 clicking noise. Thank you!
awesome music!, and i always thought the out-of-tune samples were genious :D
This is awesome
Super Weapons Interdiction Vehicles
Secret Weapons Identification Verification & Special Weapons Interdiction Vehicles.
I was 6 or 7 when ive played this game. Good times.
Nämä amiga peli musiikkit on tänäkin päivänä kovaa rautaa, ei koskaan vanhene ajan rattaiden kulutuksessa!
wow this is like the best sound + music that i ever heard .
i really have to dl more amiga music and 8+16bit thats where the gold ist ;)
I'd wish I could find an Amiga before I die... Old memories... And this was the best music on A500...
My first game on A500 , my favorite intro music with pinaball fantasies
This tune.. The torrent of memories!!
When we played this game, I always took the jeep! It was.. my thing. =)
For 1980s synth music it’s actually pretty good. From a 16 bit processor aswell.
One of the coolest game soundtracks ever produced best part of this game!
Thank you! Humbled.
Cool soundtack, great fun in Co-op, ah the memories
must have listened to this 100 times its cool, games freaking solid though!
Thanks Andrew N, I had a listen and tbh I couldn't really hear much in the way of similarities but he may have done, who knows!
I was finished when the sea came. If i manage to reach it. Memories...
@blade004 .... I know what you mean, I have had a PC for years and with most still do and a laptop, I also own an xbox360, PS3, Wii and PSP and as much fun as they are they will never be as fun as what the Amiga was... I played the Amiga night and day without fail...... I play Amiga on an emulator on the PC, and they play on the PSP too, so I can still enjoy the Amiga anytime :)...
this game was damn hard but very fun. music is awesome.
I played this game today. my old amiga is working!!
You, sir, are a legend.
Amiga had the best game music at the time between Amiga v Atari ST. That why i went from ST over to the Amiga, solely cause game music was better between versions but still, both great computers at the time!
The Amiga had its flaws though. The hard panning of the channels so that everything was either left or right was a massive downside, and only having four of those channels was severely limiting to composers.
Good old days, reminds me of argueing with my brother over who got to be the helicopter. No-one wanted to be the Jeep!
one of the best games for a500 need to make a ringtone of it ;)
Some of the best music on the amiga for sure...superbly dark intro and some great sample sequencing thrown in there....except where the musician goes nuts at 2:10 and it goes completely tuneless! Don't know what he was thinking there?! Apart from that yes, it's deffo one of the best game intro tunes. Anyone know who the musician was, Alistair Brimble maybe, sounds a little like him?
I dont specifically remember this game. But this music i remember, So i must have played it.
Fuck High Definition 1080P... The Amiga made sure the future was then... The graphics was awesome, perfect animation to match, and out of the world music that can't even be matched today...... When Amiga stopped, to me that was the end of the world.... no technology today is worth shit.......
At first I thought the SWIV was the tiny car beneath the chopper.
damn, this is intense and awesome!
Andrew Barnabas (aka Nightshade) composed this using Protracker.
Yes! Fantastic music ... and game :D
AWESOME!
Love the music
@barnage5 God bless you.
At the start it sounds like the intro music from Kult - Temple of the Flying Saucers.
Sounds like a factory level in a platform game. Amiga music have great drums&bass giving power to the song. Too bad i never put my hands on a amiga :'(
@Stevieboy74 Maybe he couldn't transpose that sample right to the pitch of the track but won't let it out. If you ask me - I kinda like it.
@poopdungeon You probably wanted to say that Firepower 2000 title screen looked exactly like the SWIV's, which is not strange since Firepower 2000 was sort of a SWIV port/sequel for SNES (where it was also called Super SWIV) and Sega Genesis (where it went by the name Mega SWIV). The game on consoles got more of the coin-op arcade feel in both graphics and gameplay, but I still prefer the original Amiga version!
@melomonster007 Hehe, so did I. I freaking loved this tune and still do.
Amiga Techno at it´s best!
Me too!
Memories!
Wow! Me and my siblings we simply adored your tunes back in the days and we still do! I will surely visit your FB page. Which games do you still write scores for ?
The PAULA sound chip: still amazing, well over 30 years on from the days of the Lorraine prototype and the A1000. Commodore, you really fucked up...
@DantheGermanGamer FORGOT LOTUS???
This song is excelent!!.
Boah damn i loved this electronic hard surface sound, like in the good old times. And the game was real difficulty but very funny ;)
it won't let me paste in the URL. Just search for Bob and Barn on Facebook
Awesome
Classic.
hello, do you know any way to rip the samples from amiga game files to use on audio trackers?
Hehe! I wonder if Depeche Mode approved their sample from People Are People in this game song? :)
Funny the tires leave track marks, yet they themselves look flat as F1 tires :P
The music of an old Amiga 500 with 1MB or less. The modern PCs need at least 1000MB to pruduce the music like this! Fuck off Wintel! (Intel and Microsoft shit) Long live to Amiga and Atari!
Dont blame that guys for this. Its a fault older as you can imagine. It begins by Texas Instruments and the CAS System! ;)
I have beaten this game on the PC amiga emulator...spend my childhood trying to beat it and I finally did it...after hundreds of plays ( I did it alone, with 3 more lives to go - crazy as hell) once I did that I never played it again
SPOILER proof : bee like bugs in the core room(which is after the *cosmic station like* zone...after you defeat it, you lost your job couse there's no enemies at all - I was laughing as hell:D:D
I LOVED THAT GAME! (And this music blows!)
@iIIcommunication - hmmm I've tried to like it but have never been able to! lol. The bass and the synth just do not go together during that section, but hey it's a small price to pay for what is otherwise a great track, and it still fills me full of nostalgia when ever I hear it, along with some of the great demo scene music, in particular Nuke from Anarchy. His music was so good, especially what he composed for their 1991 seeing is believing demo.

Ooooh take me back!
Delicious.
