    Thanks for the video. It was a nice surprise in my inbox. I have started using Capture One for all my photo work. I find that the Fujifilm simulations work very well for me. I shoot both jpeg and raw at the same time. The jpeg ends up being more of a preview than an end result. I like working in raw for the extra latitude in processing. Keep up the great content and try to stay sane, Omar!

    I feel you on that Provia love, I'm an Astia shooter primarily, with Provia in the back for sunsets since Astia does not show much range of pink. However, I set up a Velvia profile for my trip to Japan, and I haven't looked back yet. I don't know what it is. If it's the light, the Japanese colour aesthetic or what, but I haven't touched any of my old faithful profiles in a month, and to me, that's exciting.

    If you shoot RAW+JPG and your curve is set to Auto in C1, upon import all your RAW files will automatically have the curve that you shot in applied. I was surprised once that all my RAWs were appearing B&W in C1 upon importing, until I made the connection that I was shooting in Acros and had my Curve set on Auto.

  • @PierricDescamps
    @PierricDescamps 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The colours match well in this type of scenes, but I find that for portraits, and when using dynamic range features in camera, the jpgs either look a bit weird or much better than the raw with profiles applied, and it's then very hard to get to the same look in c1. Typically skin color and shine removal on the face is magic in camera and requires massive work in c1.

    This video came up because I was searching generically for info comparing LR and C1. But, glad I watched it again because it's good to know the sims match so well. I recently switched back to Lightroom so that I can use it across different devices. Plus the new Lightroom is easier to use for a novice/semi-pro like me. I noticed that I could not get the raw files to look like the jpegs straight out of camera. The jpegs were able to capture a lot more detail in highlights such as a window in the background. I also noticed a lot of color variance in my favorite profile Astia Soft. I would love to see what you could do in complex lighting situations in Lightroom.

    My experience was completely opposite. Classic chrome straight from my x-t30 looks oh so good but when I apply classic chrome to the RAW of the same photos in both Capture One and Lightroom they appear way too punchy and contrasty. Also, the camera seems to process bakcgrounds very differently when compared to foregrounds. This boggled my mind. What if I shoot in provia and want acros or eterna or even pro neg later on? having the RAW file doesnt seem to help here! I am in panic. Help Omar. I trust you.

      Just coming to grips with Capture One 20 and one thing I am finding out is that not everything is burned into the RAW. Also just learning the customizations in my new XT-3. Using a custom Velvia with the new D neg thing that brings up shadows the RAW was way off. Took about an hour to get the RAW looking very close to the jpeg. One thing I had to do was push the saturation a bunch which surprised me. If you are shooting straight film simulations without modifying other custom settings then think they look pretty close. Their camera raw program will let you do any style jpeg using the camera processor and it’s free. You can also reprocess any raw with just the camera using any settings you want to make a new jpeg.

    hello Omar. first of all i would like to say thank you for all your videos. I have a question. Unfortunately in my country we don't have any professional photo or video store, where you can go see, take it in your hand and feel it or to rent a camera use it to understand how you feel about it. The only way for me to figure it out is watching channels like yours, but in the and even this can not help that because on paper the specs looks amazing but what about real life usage? I am a professional food photographer and i really like Fuji cameras and i would like to buy one but here is the think, when i look to the specs fuji x-t3 or x-t4 they are great cameras, because they have top photo or video specs, but in my case i don't need crazy video specs 4k or what ever, or crazy high frame rate. 99% i shoot photo. So question is what can you say or advice about fuji x-t20 or x-t30 for professional work? photo quality? As a food photographer sometimes i use natural light and tripod with bounce cards and all that stuff and 90% studio lights with different modifiers as it should be. what i am trying to do not to spend a lot of money for the camera which has a lot of unnecessary options for me which i am not going to use for professional work and buy for example x-t30 and the rest of the money spend for a good lenses instead of buying x-t4 paying 1700$ for just a body and same amount of money for the lens. what do you think or will you advice???

I was trying to look for more guidance on film simulation for Fuji, I do love how Classic Chrome, Film Simulation and Classig Neg look, but it would be nice an explanation on what circumstances to shoot those (and other film sims). For example, I know you need to be careful with classic chrome when shooting people (generally) because white skin will look more pale and stuff like this would be great. Could not find any decent video explaining this more in depth so I thought of my favorite photo/dad haha. Cheers.

    The C1 example mirrors what I see from other softwares, too. You don't always _need_ a subscription, but they soon cripple the software pretty much each year by leaving it for dead.
    The math seems to be that subscriptions do cost more in the long run, but the standalone purchases are never as inexpensive as they promise, either. You can also save a ton of money on food by not eating it every day ... you're free to do so ... but then a new problem arises.

  • @atephoto
    @atephoto 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    By the way. The Curve. If you leave everything as it was on import and "Curve" shows Auto, then C1 will auto select same simulation as used in camera. Try shooing same background and swap between velvia and eterna simulation in camera. You will then see that C1 will auto pick the simulation used in camera.

I heard a photographer consistently used Capture One's Fuji profiles and RAW for color but for black and white he always just used the In camera ACROS JPEGs because the noise and tonality was much more beautiful.

    Been watching you since 2017. I feel like I know you / your family! Please keep you / your family safe and healthy. For content, can i suggest an explanation on ETTR -- specifically how can I tell when I'm past the point of no return and about to blow out my highlights? I know the histogram is there to help, but honestly that thang confuses me!

    • @ogonzilla
      @ogonzilla  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Newman Files I’m not sure I’m the expert. I just make sure I expose for the highlights

    • @thenexthobby
      @thenexthobby 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basic idea:
      Bracket some images, say 5 with 1/3 EV adjustments. Make a note of which one is the "best starting point," either in-camera or later in computer.
      Long version:
      Now look at those same 5 images in FastRawViewer and see which one of the 5 is actually best exposed, absent of any jpeg previews that by definition must present a misleading histogram. The one more fully (and safely) exposed will probably appear "worse" than the rest initially, but that's because jpeg previews are made to look "acceptable" at the expense of potentially crushing shadows and blowing highlights ... in other words if you fix the midtones and contrast yourself (easy) a better-exposed image won't need highlights recovered or shadows fixed because they weren't wrong to begin with, within the context of the camera's dynamic range.
      It's not a converter, but in some ways a competitor to Photo Mechanic (for culling .. you can tag and choose some basic exposure/WB adjustments so that your raw converter picks all that up from the XMP sidecar files it makes.) You can also use it to cull out of focus images because it's got focus peaking.
      Anyway, what that app does is only look at the raw file, NEVER the embedded jpeg that sits in every raw file. The histogram you get from the back of a camera, or from within something like Lr or Capture One is basing initial "exposure" on the embed jpeg ... which could be quite wrong actually, and creates a look that emphasizes how midtones look to interpret "over/under" exposure. That could cause you to think you overexposed ... when you didn't!
      The examples they give in videos and such are for a typical scene that was bracketed. If you go by the camera's or Lightroom's (for example) histogram, you could pick the wrong "best" version and begin editing that one, _instead_ of the image that truly was exposed more fully within the limitations of the camera's dynamic range.
      They show some amusing examples of histograms created from jpeg previews (which by definition must include WB and tone interpretations/adjustment, hence the problem ... ) and according to that the image can look in the histogram to be simultaneously over and under exposed!

    Funny thing about supporting new camera RAW is X100V has the SAME censor and the SAME processor as X-T3&30 and softwares still don't support the files unless you upgrade to a new version. How creative is that? :D

      The problem is that the software uses camera names to set how it should behave and what defaults to use and when the name is not found, it just fails. If you would change the camera name in the EXIF (and other places in the metadata) to X-T3 for example, it would probably work fine.
      Of course the software manufacturers don't want to change this as it is beneficial for them.

    You can change in the EXIF the camera model :-)

    0:57 Just to be clear. It's not that they remove camera support from V12 and older software, you have to upgrade software if you keep upgrading equipment, and this is basically same as Adobe if you break down the subscription model - or Luminar. You said they forget you after one year and I'm not completely on that page, because they will continue to support you many many years after you have purchased a version ;) That said, I could easily had V10 or even V9 still if it wasn't for my X-T3 without paying any upgrades between then and now. It's a users choice and not their problem if you upgrade equipment ;)

    Here is a good video idea. Compare iPhone mic preamps using a app called MOTIV vs Fuji x-t20 or your Sony 6400 pre amps. Use your Rhodevideomicro please.

    Ya I've been a C1 user for years, unfortunately, I am using older non supported computers. So, sadly, I can't use C1 for my work with the Fuji XT 20 I just recently bought for my new work. Ugh!

      @Todd Jones The Curve. If you leave everything as it was on import and "Curve" shows Auto, then C1 will auto select same simulation as used in camera.
