BRIENZERGRAT (Brienzer Rothorn-Harderkulm) SWITZERLAND

  • One of the most beautiful and CHALLENGING ridge hike in SWITZERLAND. It is classified as T4+, according to swiss hiking scale. There are some parts that are exposed but all are secured with cable or chains..partly the trail it's NOT marked..but you cannot get lost, because the trail flows on the ridge mostly.
    Our second hiking the Brienzergrat ridge, full video from the hike here!! • BRIENZERGRAT / Hiking ...
    HERE is the other "uknown" part of the ridge starting from "Brunigpass": • BRIENZERGRAT II (Bruni...
    The Brienzergrat trail is about 20km LONG, from Brienzer Rothorn to Harderkulm.. Brienzer Rothorn is the HIGHEST point on the route with 2350m.
    The route flows up and down, there are about 12 more SUMMITS to cross on the way.. So be aware, that this takes TIME! It is NOT a walk in the countryside!
    On the route there is NO water source, so be sure, that you are good covered.
    If you from any reason CANNOT continue the whole trail, there are many ways to go down earlier, the descents are regularly placed over whole trail.
    If you have enough of time, I would highly recommend, to save some money on the Train to Br.Rothorn and hike up from Brienz, then stay the night in the "Berghaus Rothorn" watch the Sunset.
    Camping /biwak anywhere on the ridge in this mountain area is strictly FORBIDDEN, because of the wild nature protection.
    If you want a challenge, you can start hike the COMPLETE RIDGE from "Brunnigpass" via Rothorn to Interlaken. =) Really good stamina and fitness needed!

    The Brienzergrat is always a brilliant experience. As a skyrunner, I enjoy both the challenging trails and the unique view. Here are a few tips for all those who dare to take on the challenge:
    - you need a very good physical condition
    - take at least 4 liters of water with you
    - the way from the Brienzer-Rothorn to the Harder is easier than the reverse route
    - do not go on the route on rainy days or when it has been raining the days before
    - ask about the exit variants
    - look for a guide if you are inexperienced
    - enjoy it!

      My experience with the Brienzer Grat. (Watch the difficult part for me (with a fisheye-lens): th-cam.com/video/sDfbIMt2mJ0/w-d-xo.html
      In 1995 or 97 I was on this trail (Brienzer Rothorn - Harder Kulm), and I didn't know how difficult it was. All I expected was the lengthy and constant ups and downs (according to my map - I knew it wasn't an official hiking trail, but still expected a passable route). Physically, it wasn't that much of a challenge for me as I was used to long and strenuous hikes - I considered myself an experienced hiker. I never thought about the difficulty beforehand, only about other important aspects to feel comfortable and safe (water, equipment, physical endurance, weather, etc.) and never faced any real problems. So everything was under control - previously I had been on many other "difficult" trails, or so I thought at the time.
      Two weeks before this tour I hiked to the Piz Gloria and used hiking poles for the first time, mainly for the descent to protect my knees. On the way home along Lake Brienz I thought to myself, this must be a great hike up the Brienzer Grat and just two days later I had a map to study a route.
      On Saturday I hiked up the Brienzer Rothorn, a 1600m climb and felt comfortable, sleeping there as the only guest in the dormitory.
      On Sunday I set off on what I thought would be a highlight, with magnificent views of the lakes and the famous Bernese mountains. Quite simple.
      I quickly got used to the hiking poles again, which gave me an extra feeling of security. After a while, the rock on the right side was too close to use the walking stick comfortably, so I folded it up and carried it on my backpack. I don't remember feeling uncomfortable or even worried up to that point.
      Some time later, the rock on the right stopped and soon there was a narrow path in front of me, about 50 cm wide, not too bad to walk on, maybe 10 to 15 m long (or so I remember). To the left it went down steeply about 1200 m as well as to the right 500 m. So far I've never had any difficulties on narrow paths, but I only remember in retrospect that I'd never been on such an exposed path before. I had not expected what lay ahead.
      I also folded up the left walking stick to carry it in my backpack and now walked without this extra security. But only a few metres! It hit me like a blow - I could go no further and sat down, one leg on each side of the path as if on the back of a horse. Later I don't even remember how I managed to sit down.
      Turning was not in my mind! On my back a somewhat heavy backpack, not strapped as tightly as today, I thought, crawling on my knees like a baby, I wouldn't be ashamed of that at all. On my knees I stopped immediately as I felt even more insecure as you have no grip at all and the centre of gravity is far too high - straight back onto my bottom. I wasn't panicking but I thought I have to get out of this situation - it was 10 or 11 in the morning - before it gets dark. What to do?
      I guess there were people waiting at my back, though I didn't hear anyone talking or any other sounds.
      So I remembered that I had learnt mental training some time ago - this is it now! I concentrated, got up and continued walking as if it was a normal path. I didn't turn around and soon reached the Tannhorn, where some people were resting and enjoying the view. No one said a word about this exposed path, nor did I.
      I can't remember the rest of the trail.
      My hikes since then: up to T2 (-T3). For a long time I didn't even realise I had a problem, but avoided all exposed routes afterwards.
      It was only about 10-15 years later that I really became aware of it and tried to overcome my fear of heights, only to be able to hike again as I was used to. I guess I will never get close to my abilities before that experience. When I get close to heights, I can't walk anymore, or if it's only steep on one side, I lean against the rock and become even more unsteady. I can't suppress this.
      About 5 years ago I found that this short stretch of path was about ~T4-T5. As far as I remember, there were no ropes or cables at all back then.
      It's not that I lack surefootedness or have vertigo, but the exposure to altitude now starts at about 3m if I am close to the edge.
      What should have been a great pleasure and experience became a hindrance and robbed me of a large part of this great hobby.
      As long as you feel good, keep going, maybe even increase the difficulty little by little. This is how I am trying to regain my skills. Enjoy.

    Beautiful images. For those who are wondering: The trail is actually usually classified as T5 which it reaches briefly twice (at the Tannhorn and Augstmatthorn). Otherwise it is T3 and T4, but it should not be underestimated and vertigo is (even without a gopro fish eye) a hinderance!

      @patrikfusko  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man.. We are looking forward to go there again.. Hopefully this year.. I think T5 is little bit over.. Even on the most dangerous parts of the ridge.. Like you wrote it on the Tannhorn and Augstmatthorn the parts are very well secured with chains and rope.. So it makes it max. T4-. Yeah like you wrote most of the ridge is pretty exposed.. But I would say the main challenge is in its lenght.. Must be carefully and good planned before the trip, there's no water source on the way.. So yeah.. I say this is the real challenge on the brienzergrat ridge in the hot summer days.. :)

    I planned a travel to Swiss next year around this Ridge. Where to go and how i'm not sure yet. So far only minute 4:00 to 6:30 scares me, a climb mistake and you definitely are dead (100 meter fall). Rest of the trail, seems way safer then some people make it seem dangerous like (for instance there is blog '10 reasons not to do hardergrat'). I don't know if the image is distorted (i noticed that on some 360° views and movies it looks way less steep then in your video with the camera on helmet, is it distortion or actually that steep, no clue yet. One thing is for sure (unless i'm mistake but i'm still researching): Tannhorn is by far the most dangerous, and a little part before Briefenhörnli seems super dangerous with like very steep rock ledges into a super tiny road. One slide left or right and boom. They are the only two parts that i'm really 'not sure' about, safety wise as an unexperienced, but higly motivated adventurer. I'm a little heavy but i can fix that by next year. If i skip Tannhorn and do like harder Kulm to Allgauwgören, do i skip most of the danger? The Allgauwgören and the Schnierenhirnli are my top priority for images and a sense of achievement (reaching a top). Augstmatthorn is also on my list, but seems very safe, except for last 20-75 meter (hard to see as nobody takes images from that, the windup (at 2000 meter until the raising top of augstmatthorn) is as safe as i can see, 3 meter broad walks without risk to slip (dry condition ofc).
    Is it me, or is there 'less sunlight' (sunrise) on Tannhorn? Does that mean you guys slept there?

    • @patrikfusko
      @patrikfusko  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hardergrat is only "part" of the mostly in common known as "brienzergrat". Hardergrat actually begins from harderkulm ends on the first summit "suggiture". thats where other part of ridge begins "riedergrat".
      Each mountain hike brings risiko with it, if it's dangerous, really hard question..
      it depends on which hiking level you are, fitness, fear of heights (some exposed parts) weather conditions and so on.. it is really long hike..
      you can check out our video from hiking the Brienzergrat from last year..
      it is really video full of information, it could help you more.

    • @patrikfusko
      @patrikfusko  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi, yeah in that case it is surely more difficult then Pilatus descent, considering it's lenght.. partly it is even steep, and it's classified in swiss as T5 hike, which is difficult, although Pilatus only max T3 difficulty. :)

      From Brienzer Rothorn, you just always follow the ridge to the west. About half the trail is marked, half is unmarked. After Augstmatthorn, follow the signs to Harder Kulm. Orientation-wise, it is really easy. It will take you between 7 and 10 hours in that direction. Expect to need 2.5hrs from Brienzer Rothorn to Tannhorn, 3.5hrs from there to Augstmatthorn, and another 2 hours to hike down to Harder Kulm.
      Please make sure you know what you are doing - pack sufficient water (3L), good trail runners or hiking boots, sunshield. Also, you need to be free of vertigo, a few sections of the path are quite exposed. It is not technically very difficult terrain, you not slipping is imperative.

      The other way (from Harder Kulm to Brienzer-Rothorn) is more beautiful but a little harder... In summer i do several tours in both ways.

      hey there! thank you! brienzergrat is very unique, you 're right :) .. the ridge in your video is called Niesengrat, if I'm right.. it looks looks like you have started from Drunegalm, from Alp Obere Drune, is that right? we did this one already in 2018, video is on our channel, we did started from Niesen via Fromberghorn and ended up with Steinschlaghore, desceending to Frutigen.. this year we want to do this one again.. very beautiful ridge as well, more challenging then Brienzergrat :) Cheers

Then walk up to the alp ˋˋoberi Drune´´. There u could sleep in a cute wooden house. Jakob would even cook for u. His Nr. 079 399 99 43. It’s not for free, but very affordable. it is not a T4- it is officially unrated, several parts are easily T5 due to the dangerosity, if you fall you will DIE, someone just did on that same path the 10 oct 2021 (thus my comment) and every year 1-2 people die on that path, I know the more you hike or climb the easier it gets but keep in mind ratings are primarily meant for people who do not know the area at all, not for elite alpinists/hikers who go wherever they want anyway, this path is too glamorized for me you see it everywhere and it attracts people who don't have the level for it's difficulty, you can disapprove but I already did 460km and 37'308 D+ of T3-T4 this year (current goal is to do all official T4 one by one) my comment does not come from a beginner

    • @patrikfusko
      @patrikfusko  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi there! let's say you are right.. but the only T5 part would be the ridge on Tannhorn.. but there is solid secured roped, we did the same hike last year, with more detailed video even from Tannhorn, where I scrambled up the ridge without using the rope, direct approach, that is T5. th-cam.com/video/0TCdPslg5jU/w-d-xo.html ridge is exposed and of course you fall you die, but this is the same as for T3 hikes, or any other.. it does not need to be official, so I know on which terrain I am on.. this whole ridge attracts people, this you are right, but you cannot forbid anyone to do it.. from gummhoren to Augstmatthorn and Harder it is only T3.. so T5 is little bit overreacting.. I don't know if you know this region, but it is nothing to compare, to T5 hikes like: Axalphorn, Loucherhorn, Glogghus, Niesengrat, Schafnase NW ridge.. here the exposure and difficulty are much higher.. and those are T5. We are hiking T5 and T6 hikes regularly.. and I agree with you, for someone new, may be this Tannhorn a real challenge, but is also represents the main technical difficulty along this hike.. this narrow ridge, not everybody is up to do something like that.. what the most people underestimate! is the length and their fitness level, combined with technical difficulty along this hike, like Tannhorn.. people may get in trouble.. peole just should take some time studying, before going.. :) have a nice day..
