Do you have any questions for me about this song THE ENCYCLOPEDIA SALESMAN? I'm answering the interesting ones in a future video, so please comment your qs down below!
How did you come up with this song? I know you started initially writing this on 2018 but how is the idea born? Was there really an encyclopedia salesman that came knocking on your door when you were younger or was this idea born due to your love for books?
I'm sure Sung Dong-Il aka Deoksun's father in Reply 1988 would probably buy that Encyclopedia from A-Z from the salesman knowing he's knocking all over cities under heat of the sun from 9-5 😭😭😭😭 Saddest song of the album huhu
This song is so precious for me because it reminded me of this childhood memory. My aunt used to have this Encyclopedia collection, I always admired them from the glass cabinet, we were told not to just casually pick the books maybe because they are expensive, she said that she bought it from this man because he looked so desperate and exhausted from all the door-to-door salestalk, though my cousin told me that my aunt was actually tricked into buying the collection, she said that there's no need to buy them because internet already existed that time 🤭 So yes, I learned the types of clouds from the encyclopedia. Thank you Ate Reese, I feel like you were singing in my perspective
I am not a big fan of fantasy, fiction, romance books and the likes, but one thing is for sure, I grew up loving the encyclopedia. My grandmother has a set from A-Z on her bookshelf and the curious little me was astounded by the fancy looking hardbound books with the titles pressed in gold color. Indeed, through reading those, I was shown the world -- from animals, to countries, to flowers, and other wonders of the world I wasn't initially interested in -- my view has begun to expand. Listening to this song aches my heart because, aside from encyclopedias, there are a lot of things that helped me a lot that are being sold by humble people on the streets. "He promised me tomorrow but I can't do the same for him."
"He promised me tomorrow..." I remember that moment... i was in g6 that was 2010, we can't afford to have internet that time... but my mom manages to buy me An encyclopedia set for my birthday.... I remember myself infront of my encyclopedia set trying to find the right letter to what topic my assignment is about... and I'm proud to say that I always get a perfect score... I even got a high rating from my teacher for my presentation thanks to my encyclopedia set... i still have them and even if their not updated I still display them in my cabinet...
I can totally relate to this. I remember being a kid, reading our hardbound How Things Work book bought from a door to door salesman. It definitely sparked a love for knowing the intricacies of ... ... everything anything. Thank you for reminding me of all those good memories. I'm grateful to have wonderful things to look back to.
this song is so masterful, and it hurts. i cried. the double meaning of lyrics, the overall message, the tune and the story you showed. it's so real and it's so beautiful. what a truly underrated gem :(
I remember back then, my mom would always buy tons of dictionary from volumes 1 to 10 and there's this man who keeps knocking on our door. Under the heat carrying heavy loads of books. I salute them! ♥️♥️♥️
For me, it's about the hardwork of a salesman that keeps on trying so he can support his family. While the other side of it is all about a daughter or a son seeing his fathers hardwork. Who wants to help but not capable of doing it because they are still young. This song deserves an award.
This is one of the reasons why I think you are such an amazing musician and lyricist. You take a seemingly simple story and give it so much color and depth.
I think Ms. Reese is perfect to have a duet or collaboration with Mr. Ed Sheeran. Who else agrees with me? I just remembered the songs of divide album of Ed Sheeran with this song.
hello! yes my father used to read me those books. i still have it piled up on my cabinet. missing those days too, when we were young, innocent, and carefree.
The whole song reminds me of Sky sailing "Brielle". The story telling is so good. I never met this guy but the nostalgia this brings feels like i'm remembering a memory i have long forgotten.
my mom got us these really thick encylopedia books that comes in each letter of the alphabet when me & siblings were younger, along with a couple of “i wonder why” books. i dont think we had internet at the time, so watching cartoon network all day, & reading those books were our only source of entertainment (aside also ofcourse the constant fighting & brawling that comes with having siblings). i really miss those days. & i guess i also miss the dying jobs brought about by the technological advancements like the photographers in our town plaza wherein you have to wait for like a week before u get to see the actual image they took during school activities like Nutrition Month & such.
Paminsan minsan naluluha ako sa kantang to 😭 Ang cool na yung taong nagsulat ng album bilang dedication/thank you sa internet ay self aware din sa mga naiiwan sa society dahil dito or sa technological advancement in general
This reminds me of when I was younger when a salesman would offer encyclopedia promos door to door. Encyclopedia backnthen was golden. And I would.say thoae who have it were well-off in my perspective. 😊😊
this song makes me remember that time in 2011-2012 when we went to a different city far from where we live. my mom’s workmate had a call with her daughter, her daughter was crying it’s because she had a little kid fight with this brother and her mom to make her shush told her that she will bring her an encyclopedia. years later she gave that to me. i dunno it may not be a very special memory but together with it i can remember that time when my father reads me i wonder why books. i treasure those memories knowing that i could never bring back time.
was this about someone special and or personal? what happened to him after everything? after the world started not really needing these door to door salesmen? Big fan btw! you’re a really great poet and a really lovely singer 🥺💚
This song triggered some good and sad memories, we used to buy books not on bookstore but from book salesman and in lay away term as books are expensive but we know that internet happened and some of them are now lost in circulation. Thank you Reese for you music, I felt like you are writing/singing in my POV.
We didn't own any encyclopedia but our aunt sent us a four-set dictionary as bulky as that of an encyclopedia. I remember loving it because some words have pictures on it to further describe a word (very helpful for me as a visual learner). To be honest, I can't remember the last time I've opened any of those four sets 'coz this time, everything is just a google away. This whole EP, especially this song, made me realize the things I've taken for granted and that I should always be grateful even with the little things. Thank you for your music, Ate Reese. 💛💛💛
This song really made me cry and remember where I came from and my cronies who are still on the field knocking 7-5,sometimes sunrise to sunset.... with humility they faced people in different state of living... Just to survived the day...A Big Salute to y'all!!!
I'm born too late to see real encyclopedia salesmen going from door to door selling encyclopedias but we had a complete collection called "The Children's Encyclopedia". They were bought by my grandma and my mom told me stories if her going from one volume to another to finish her homeworks back then. I used to read a lot back then and the pictures and captions on them were so interesting, they were my friends and I loved thos books with all of my heart, honestly. Too bad our old house was flooded during Ondoy and it ruined a whole bookshelf of books. I wish I can meet an encyclopedia salesman one day. They're probably really expensive but I'll do everything to buy a whole collection. Encyclopedias and their salesmen needs more love.
i remember people knocking on our doors just to sell books and goods and i was so always excited to buy those but of course, my family had a limited budget so we cant really buy those things from them. but it really felt good talking to them and listening to their stories why they are selling those. so precious. so beautiful.
Ate Reese's songs always tell a story. I really like the songs she puts out. Never fails to make me have the feels. Continue to do your passion, Ate Reese! ILY! I wish you the best!
I relate to this so much. Still now, our encyclopedias are still in our wooden cabinets. Thank you so much for another great song. You always touch my heart.
Listening to Ate Reese's music brings me back to my childhood. When I was a child, my mother gifted me a letter A and B encyclopedia and a couple volumes of science encyclopedia. I was so happy that moment she brought it home. We were not together for years because I was raised in my father's parents house soooo... hehe long story. But, anyway, everytime I listen to Ate Reese's music, especially this, it reminds me of my passionate and curious days. She also motivates me to read more and to treasure all our little moments in learning something. I love you, Ate Reese. This is my favorite track in this EP. ✨
At the back of my brain is a man I remember him clearly though no one else can In his suitcase He showed me the world And I had a vision so grand All that there is at the palm of my hand I'll write off all the battles and wars Erasing human scars All day he's knocking doors all over cities Under heat from 9 to 5 The load is heavy, he's got a family Hoping only to survive 1 out of 20 and his light is glowing dim He promised me tomorrow But I can't do the same for him The man took a seat at our table He laid out the pages until I was able to find myself In between the words And he made a deal with my father Letter to letter my mind wanders farther They shake their hands And off he goes again All day he's knocking doors all over cities Under heat from 9 to 5 The load is heavy, he's got a family Hoping only to survive 1 out of 20 and his light is going dim He promised me tomorrow But I can't do the same for him Oh, I heard screaming next door Nobody needs this anymore Somebody's slamming the door Nobody reads this anymore Whatever happened to him All day he's knocking doors all over cities Under heat from 9 to 5 The load is heavy, he's got a family Hoping only to survive 1 out of 20 and his light is going dim He promised me tomorrow But I can't do the same for him
this is really a big tribute for the people and jobs that have been forgotten in time because of today's social media age. our heart goes to you ❤️ anyways, guys lets thanks ms. reese for putting up this song that is full of compassion. how i wish i could write like you.

Sino (or sino-sino) po 'yung naging inspiration in writing this song? Based po ba ito sa own experience?
In one word, how will you describe the theme and aesthetic of this EP?
Is the song for those people who have jobs that are on the brink of being forgotten due to this digital age?
Is the title "The Encyclopedia Salesman" a reference from the movie?
My father was an encyclopedia salesman. Lagi niya kinukwento yun samin. Share ko to sa kanya. :)
I'm sure Sung Dong-Il aka Deoksun's father in Reply 1988 would probably buy that Encyclopedia from A-Z from the salesman knowing he's knocking all over cities under heat of the sun from 9-5 😭😭😭😭 Saddest song of the album huhu

Does he have a name? Whatever happened to him? Is he a memory from your childhood?
It's like pursuit of happyness but the man is selling encyclopedia.
I can totally relate to this. I remember being a kid, reading our hardbound How Things Work book bought from a door to door salesman. It definitely sparked a love for knowing the intricacies of ... ... everything anything.

Have you guys still encounter an Encyclopedia Salesmen up to this day? I’m just curious...
I’m sure 90s kids can relate to this song💕
My mom was selling encyclopedia before. It was a fun job, but very tiring. Well, I grow up seeing her doing that job. 💛 Free books for me. 🤣💛
I can imagine a person who relates to this song just crying 💖

I think everyone is familiar with "I wonder why?" collection of encyclopedia, right? Ahahaha. I miss the childhood days. Golden days indeed! :(

Kakadiscover ko lang ng kanta na to naiiyak ako bat ganuun huhu galing ng story telling
LMAOOO I'm not alone crying after all
Huge Regina Spektor energy 😭 Just spot how Reg and Reese close their eyes so tenderly during live performances. True musicians at heart do this!
i actually cried here when i was listening to your album, then still crying to the next song
Ms. Reese, will you also do a "dissecting the song" series for this EP like you did in Arigato Internet? 😊
PS. You're my favorite songwriter ❤✨
Ahh, I just want an actual Encyclopedia salesman to see this :
my mom got us these really thick encylopedia books that comes in each letter of the alphabet when me & siblings were younger, along with a couple of “i wonder why” books. i dont think we had internet at the time, so watching cartoon network all day, & reading those books were our only source of entertainment (aside also ofcourse the constant fighting & brawling that comes with having siblings).

This reminds me of when I was younger when a salesman would offer encyclopedia promos door to door. Encyclopedia backnthen was golden. And I would.say thoae who have it were well-off in my perspective. 😊😊

This is your saddest song 😭😭 My heart for that encyclopedia salesman 💔💔
here before this song will bomb the mainstream.
Reese. 😍
At the back of my brain is a man
I remember him clearly though no one else can
In his suitcase
He showed me the world
And I had a vision so grand
All that there is at the palm of my hand
I'll write off all the battles and wars
Erasing human scars
All day he's knocking doors all over cities
Under heat from 9 to 5
The load is heavy, he's got a family
Hoping only to survive
1 out of 20 and his light is glowing dim
He promised me tomorrow
But I can't do the same for him
The man took a seat at our table
He laid out the pages until I was able to find myself
In between the words
And he made a deal with my father
Letter to letter my mind wanders farther
They shake their hands
And off he goes again
All day he's knocking doors all over cities
Under heat from 9 to 5
The load is heavy, he's got a family
Hoping only to survive
1 out of 20 and his light is going dim
He promised me tomorrow
But I can't do the same for him
Oh, I heard screaming next door
Nobody needs this anymore
Somebody's slamming the door
Nobody reads this anymore
Whatever happened to him
All day he's knocking doors all over cities
Under heat from 9 to 5
The load is heavy, he's got a family
Hoping only to survive
1 out of 20 and his light is going dim
He promised me tomorrow
But I can't do the same for him
Reese I love you
