QUICK CORRECTION HERE: "in the dark story, eggman notices that there are two energy readings for the last chaos emerald, leading him to guess that one of them must be fake" (TheGershon) My friend ParadoxAkumu was the one that gave me the idea to go over this cutscene for today's video! Feel free to skip the cutscene if you've seen it already (you're a heretic if you do) Caption that final clip of Sonic bumpin' it(?), not sure what I made him do haha
I feel like he could've specifically baited Tails just to deal a blow to his ego, knowing that he struggled with not being sure he could ever be as good as Sonic. This was a big point of his story in Adventure 1 and was the main focus of his theme song, too. He killed Tails' idol right in front of him and then made him feel like it was his fault in order to try and ruin the progress he made for himself, but his response was just to get fired up over Sonic's last wishes and battle Eggman anyways; it also showcases a bit of Eggman's main flaw as a character, his hubris, and how he underestimated his rival in Adventure 2, Tails. It's a wonderfully complex cutscene and the somewhat cheesy but lovably over-the-top storytelling is one of the prime reasons I love Adventure 2 so much.
Another interesting thing about the dark story is that their version of this cutscene doesn't show Sonic's inernal monologue in the rocket after it launches, leading you to believe that he does indeed just blow up. You wouldn't know the wiser as to how he escapes until you use context clues in the dark story's last boss fight or played the hero story.
This isn't anything new. Sonic was tricked many times before and after SA2. In Sonic 1, Dr. Eggman led him into a trap in Scrap Brain zone, forcing us in another Sonic Labyrinth zone again. In Sonic & Knuckles, there was a capsule that was actually a boss in Flying Battery zone act 2. In Sonic Adventure, he tricked Sonic and Tails to let their guard down when they defeated Egg Hornet, allowing him to steal the Emerald from Tails. In Sonic Heroes, Metal Sonic disguised himself as his creator to, and I quote by Sonic himself, "drat, a trap to stall for time"! In Sonic Battle, he came up to Sonic & Tails, and invited them to the Death Egg as a back up plan, after he failed to capture Emerl, which Sonic thought it was a good idea to send Emerl up there, which got him killed after Eggman reprogrammed him. In Sonic Riders, Sonic joins a racing tournament to battle Jet, and all Sonic needed to enter was give him the chaos emeralds, which Knuckles was suspicious of (not my favorite portrayal of Sonic, tbh). In Sonic 06, Dr. Eggman asked for the chaos emerald again for Elise, and they knew it was a trap, but Sonic went anyways, and got sent to the future. Sonic Unleashed, Dr. Eggman led Super Sonic into a trap thanks to his cockiness again, which turned him into a werehog. Sonic is well aware Dr. Eggman is deceptive because he's known him longer than Knuckles. But he's been tricked way more times than Knuckles has, and that's why he's wiser than him. At the time, Knuckles didn't know who Sonic and Eggman were, but even he's picked up on who is the most trusting in games like Sonic Heroes, Riders, and Zero Gravity. It's nice to see Knuckles' character development. Dr. Eggman is a great villain. He has an IQ of 300, always has a back up plan which makes him unpredictable, and is one of the most deceptive characters in the Sonic universe. "Once again, you fools have been tricked!" -Sonic Heroes
One thing you didn't mention is that in the dark story, eggman notices that there are two energy readings for the last chaos emerald, leading him to guess that one of them must be fake
Right, not to mention Tails himself said that a machine couldn't tell the difference between the real and the fake, meaning Eggman had two identical readings despite only missing one Emerald. Gotta appreciate the continuity.
Right and too there is a cutscene in the dark story mode where he does talk about how the heroes thought they could trick him with a fake emerald and has the upper hand within the cutscene
You have to realized Egg-man was in a 50/50 mix-up with team sonic and he guessed right when it mattered the most If he guessed wrong and sonic carried the real emerald cause of his fear for his friends danger (which he could assume because the original ransom plan relied) he just sent emerald on one way ticket to the vacuum and space and has to go get again which just gives team sonic more time to destroy the cannon Eggman used respectable prediction, deception and mental manipulation That's what makes that cut-scene so cool
@@ivrydice0954 Oh yeah he definitely still owned the shit out Tails, I'm just pointing out that it wasn't just some hunch he got over Sonic being a bit coy for one line
i also like the way his ears move, i love when they remember that the mobians are animal characters and make their ears help show expression similar deal in the first cutscene where sonic and shadow meet, sonics ear twitches towards where shadow is standing before sonic turns to look at him, he hears shadow before he sees him lol im not a furry i just appreciate the detail
"You've turned into a big-time villain, doctor!" I love this line so much. Sonic has that cocky personality you expect, but at the same time, you can tell he's cautious. He knows how careful he has to be in this moment. He can't screw up now.
To be honest, I've always seen Sonic's attitude at this moment as a reason Eggman took no chances. Why would you be so cocky in a hostage situation unless you're hiding something?
Yeah! He's literally taking her hostage, threatening to kill her. The entire scene is so epic. Today Eggman would just make silly jokes and never dare to do anything real evil although he is the villain
One thing i really like about Eggman is that no matter how silly he gets he still can prove time and time again he dosen't screw around and that he is a genius. (Even if he puts giant big kill me switches on his boss robots)
Not only was Eggman a threat here, but he *also* showed the most humanity and depth of all his appearances (in the games at least; X and Boom make him *way* more sympathetic than the games do). That little quiet moment where he reflected on his childhood hero trying to destroy the world... being willing to actually have a civil conversation with his enemies as he comes to terms with his own disillusionment with Professor Gerald... Like, yes, people go on about what a great villain Eggman was in SA2, and they're right. But let's not also forget what a nuanced *person* he was here too. This was a rare glimpse at an Eggman who did more than menacingly cackle or shout threats and insults. It was Eggman in a state of emotional vulnerability and humanity, and I wish we'd get to see that side of him a bit more often.
I personally would Like to Know Eggmans Motives in the Game Universe. Archies Eggman/ Robotnik was a power hungry Psycho long before he became Robotnik. And Robotnik in Sonic the Comic was Actually a Humanitarian corrupted by the Chaos Emeralds power and turned into a Monster. But we Never Learn Why Eggman wants to rule the world in the games, he isn't Heartlessly Evil like Archie Eggman, and he started his Career in villainy before he even came in contact with the emeralds, so what drives him? Is it because he wants to overthrow the Corrupted Government? After SA2 that would make sense given what GUN did to his Grandfather and Cousin. (Especially after the Events of Shadow The Hedgehog where we learn that Gun stormed the Ark out of a Misunderstanding, they thought Proffessor Gerald was Building the Eclipse Cannon to take over the world but it was built so Shadow could use it to Destroy the Black Comet when it returned.) But back to the point I want to Know Eggmans Motives behind his Career in Villany
@@zeusthefox1585 I always figured it was just kind of a thing he wanted to do. Like a robot world ruled by a genius like him would just he the best kind of world in his eyes. Sort of like Ultron or skynet I figured he saw humans as imperfect and irrational, unwilling to think in terms of pure logic like he was whereas machines were the opposite.
Its cause the shows are geared towards younger kids now and they want to make their characters as black and white as possible esp 4kids. Networks don't believe kids are capable of emotional depth or critical thinking
This was when eggman was a threat. Now he's a joke and kinda a push over. He literally held any captive, baited tails, and almost killed sonic. Without the need of some stupid and complicated plan like in forces. Peak dr eggman.
Unleashed was the last good Eggman plan. Most of it in the opening, but hey, he finally finished Eggman Land in that one. Colors is a tonal whiplash, and not a good one, like Colors is a Johnny Test whiplash.
SA2 as a whole did so many things right. Not just Eggman, but Tails proved that he could step up and be a real hero when Sonic isn't around. Taking on Eggman by himself was such a high point for his character. Plus, it works with his theme song Believe In Myself.
@@sunayama4650 Honestly, they just flat out shoved Tails aside to make room for non canon Original the Character. I mean, who here could imagine how Tails would have handled a... "whispen", or maybe even gave the Tornado 2 some serious upgrades...
Kuma Suna The same writers that did Sonic Colors & Sonic Lost World (Happy Tree Friends writers did the script) did Tails wrong in Forces. The writers for the first Sonic Adventure has Tails defusing a Rocket bomb without Sonic’s help and defeated Eggman while he’s in his machine.
I like Sonic's "last words" to them as well. Mostly because I admire the character development they all had in Sonic Adventure that carries over into 2. Tails' story in SA was about having the courage to do things on his own without Sonic. He proved he could, so now Sonic trusts him to finish their mission on his own. Amy learned to be a hero in her own right, even standing up to Sonic and getting in his way to protect Gamma. Even though she's still a damsel in distress in this situation, he knows that she's tougher than she seems and she can take care of herself. This is exactly what a good sequel should do. Character growth isn't left behind or forgotten. Use it!
Idk, I feel like the voice actor was trying to sound bittersweet when addressing Amy, but it kind of just came off as. "And Amy, take care of *yourself* for once."
I feel too many people gloss over Amy sneaking onto Prison Island and breaking Sonic out of his cell. Even if she doesn't get much time to shine due to a lack of gameplay, she absolutely carried her weight in SA2.
Also, another thing I noticed. Aside from Eggman potentially having heard their communication, another thing that could have tipped him off was Sonic's cocky smile & banter as he was going to give the Emerald to him. Sure, Sonic is usually cocky, but even Eggman knows that he will get serious if the situation looked dire enough. However, Sonic walked over, smug as all hell and even giving him the "You turned into a BIG time villain, Doctor!" tease, about to give Eggman the most powerful gem in existence. Sonic's calm & smug attitude during the situation is likely what made Eggman 100% sure that something wasn't right with the Emerald.
I like how Eggman, rather than cackling with glee when Sonic's capsule blows up, is instead stoic and simply bids his longtime enemy farewell. A big time villain, indeed.
I love the fact that straight after this scene, Tails kicks his ass... ...and that's probably why I hate the fact that the current games portray Tails as a pissing coward.
It’s a tough answer. Canonically Eggman does barely escape with the emerald but Sonic already puts the fake in the reactor thus stopping the laser and causing the final story message from Gerald. This scene specifically happens with tails saying “sonic, I did it!” on the radio.(I think) but eggman has the emeralds and seems to be just exhausted rather than clearly defeated. ‘‘Twas probably a stalemate with eggman getting too tired.
@@Killmerightnow I always saw it as Tails getting so caught up in the fight that he didn't realize he had dropped the emerald so he beat eggman, thought he was unconscious when he wasn't, thus eggman makes off with the emerald while Tails and Amy think they've won leading to the ending in Team Dark.
@@megasoniczxx Also, we need to keep in mind Tails just watched his best friend die. Adrenaline and rage kept him going during the fight, but as soon as he thinks Eggman is down for the count… he just doesn’t have the energy to keep going.
This is peak Eggman and a key example of why the Sonic Adventure games are held in such high regard. You don't get such great story telling moments out of 2D sonic.
@@failfort7822 Wow I you must've came up with that deep analysis yourself, here's why it's not smart: -No one in the game knows who Shadow is or the existence of a "Shadow" until they meet him. He is top secret shit. They only know Sonic. -Shadow rivals the speed of "the fastest thing alive". -If you were to forget everything about Shadow and get your first impressions on him without context, I bet you'd think he was some kind of dark version of Sonic.
@@failfort7822 uh,yeah, all they know is a super fast hedgehog stole a CHOAS EMERALD AT NIGHT.You can go away now projared fan and his fucking ass review.
When people tell me Eggman wasn't a competent villain, I show them this. This really is my favorite moment in the entire Sonic franchise, and it proves that Dr. Eggman shouldn't be underestimated. Every time Sonic thinks too highly of himself when comparing him to the doc, Sonic gets tricked! But apparently, he never gets tricked. 'Sonic is perfect'. It's a shame Dr. Eggman isn't a competent villain anymore, and so many people think he was never like this.
Kayvee Yep. That just makes him unpredictable. You think he is just a joke, and BAM. He is... Lol. But sometimes that’s not always going to happen. You never know when he has a back up plan. It’s what I love about him in the movie.
Everyone talks about how shoddy the animations are in the game. But damn, Tails' reaction to being baited is just perfect. It's just that look of complete awe.
I mean they are shoddy, but you can see the effort put into them, especially compared to SA1. Idk if it was abt lack of funds, time, or experience, but I think they did their best w/ what they had
@@tiablue9106 I think they used motion capture to make those cutscenes. If that's true, then not only is SA1 one of the first platformers with fully voice acted cutscenes, but SA2 is also the first platformer to use motion capture. Another thing, SA1 was basically the second big japanese 3D platformer to release, after Mario 64. Between those 2 there were only either American or British stuff. Just to show how important to the industry these games actually are.
In my opinion is something that sounds genuinely natural, it is the expected reaction to someone who is legitimate surprised, normally surprise is something temporary and fast, until it transforms into another emotion, so yeah you can only say a real quick "Woah" until you can grasp what happened But the "Oh No" from Knuckles is bland as F. and in the contest of a fight, normally you don't expect something as bland as that "Oh No", you expect something like a grunt or a curse, not a simple "Oh no", and since it is unexpected it can give you involuntary laughing, and add to the mix such bland and non-natural line plus repetition, since it repeats 3 times in each battle, you can have a meme-worthy line
Yeah, it was something that happened in a split second with no discernible warning, so Sonic made an audible noise before he could even process what was going on. It's normal.
6 Emeralds: *Destroys half the moon* All 7 Emeralds: *Can destroy the WHOLE PLANET allegedly* Well... that escalated. EDIT: Eggman knew about the fake Emerald. In the cutscene before Cosmic Wall I believe, he gets a reading that there are 2 Emeralds on the ARK other than the 6 he already has. He was aware of a potential fake Emerald plot before intercepting Tails and Sonic's call. He DIDN'T know that Sonic was about to give him the fake, so he did in fact bluff Tails and hit him with a Reverse -Mushroom- Card. Well played, Doc.
Well actually, the Canon only works because of the emeralds, the emeralds have INFINITE power, they can erase existance if they want and fucking piss on the time space continuem, but the Canon was programmed to crash on earth and not shoot it,the fact that the Canon worked with only 6 is a clue for their sheer amount of power. And the fact that robots can't utilize the emeralds fully or sonic 3 final boss would be invincible.
I think the principle of the power being so different between 6 and 7 Emeralds is because If we compare a wheel in which it has 7 vertices and one is missing, the wheel can't work properly, but when all 7 it's correctly connected, the wheel will work.
Legitimately one of the best moments in the franchise. I also love how in the Dark Story if you load your save after this scene Eggman is super hyped about finally beating Sonic and even starts going ‘look out Tails, you’re next!’.
In a prior dark story scene, eggman detects readings of two chaos emeralds and says “did they really think they could trick me with that fake emerald” so he basically just wanted to absolutely destroy Tails’ ego in the most painful way from what I can tell.
I love this cutscene so much. I once got my gf to admit to something that I accused her of in a similar way and I shouted out "YOU JUST GOT EGGMANNED" and we still laugh about it.
"You've turned into a big time villain doctor" Fricking love that line Bro after watching like half of the video I realized that the whole "You just told me fox boy" was referring to what Tails literally just said, I always just thought that he overheard Tails mentioning it before he says the "How did you know it's fake" line and didn't look deep into it dayyyum
I'm so glad the Adventure games, especially Adventure 2, have been getting much more positive attention lately. Given how much Sonic Team pays attention to what the internet says about Sonic (to a fault), I'm hoping this could mean a new game in the future that's more along the lines of SA2. But even if that doesn't happen, I'm still enjoying the Adventure renaissance!
@@sunayama4650 Fortunately, there's a fan remake for PC that's trying to recreate the full game sans all the bugs and other problems. As for the kiss scene... I like to think it was just a rushed idea for an "emotional climax" which they didn't have time to rewrite due to how rushed the game's development was. Much like with most of the game's plot, it also seems.
There’s another awesome moment here for tails’ defiance. This isn’t just a matter of Tails losing his best friend. This is them losing their last hope of stopping Eggman, and now millions of people are going to die, all because he got ahead of himself. No one would fault him for breaking down here, for just collapsing in a quiet despair. But he doesn’t. Because even if he doesn’t think he can do it… even if he can’t believe in himself…. Sonic _did._ and if Sonic believes in him, that’s enough.
I really like Eggman in this scene, but i wanna talk about Tails here too. Sure, he might be one of the smartest characters in the sonic universe but he is still an 8 year old that has flaws. But what i love about this scene so much, is that Tails inmediately starts to fight Eggman after he 'killed' Sonic. No cowering in fear, no "HeLp mE SonIC". You straight up fight Eggman.
Something I just wanna point out that's really gone under the radar with this cutscene, is how it parellals with the flashback of Maria sending Shadow down to Earth in the exact same type of pod.
This is why the Adventure games are so beloved. They were catered to an older audience, which shows Sonic at his best. I hate the childish direction this franchise has taken.
I remember first seeing this cutscene as a child after having finally beaten Crazy Gadget for the first time. That stage was the biggest pain in the ass. Then, this cutscene comes on and blows my mind to hell and back, and it was also right before I lost my last baby tooth.
This is the best cutscene in the franchise and its not even close. Bring back tension and personal stakes back. While you're at it Sonic Team bring back Eggman feeling like a credible threat instead of making him a joke.
One of my favorite parts about this scene is how Amy gets captured is the first time there's a consequence for the running gag of Sonic and Tails leaving her behind. At this point in the game, Amy getting left behind has been a running joke, with it happening 4 times beforehand(before Prison Island, before Metal Harbor, before Mission Street, and before Tails goes after the President). Once they get on the ARK, Sonic & Tails ditch again in order to stop the Eclipse Cannon, expecting the plan to go off without a hitch except, because Eggman saw them in the Dark Story, he knew they left Amy by herself and took advantage of that, leading to the rest of the scene. And then the game has her be left behind again in the Last Story, with her getting left behind again allowing her to convince Shadow to help the others save the planet.
You didn't even mention my favorite part of this cutscene! I love the characterization of Tails at the end. In Sonic Adventure 1, Tails believed in himself and beat Eggman which allowed him to be a hero just like Sonic who he aims to be just like. Now here, Sonic leaves Eggman - and the whole world, by extension - as his responsibility. Tails finally achieved his dream of being just like Sonic, and the result is the sudden fierce determination we see for Tails to beat Eggman and avenge his lost friend. Sonic games aren't exactly big on character arcs, but I love Tails's. People always bring up Shadow's arc, but I think Tails has a lot more of a relatable and satisfying arc. Also, in Crazy Gadget, if you spend ten minutes in the level then Eggman will come on the radio and say, "Sonic, if you don't get here right now, Amy WILL die!" It's such an intense line that reveals the severity of the situation. I know Eggman is a really silly character at times, especially in more modern iterations, but lines like that are why I think Adventure era Eggman is actually pretty menacing.
...then the modern games came and undid all that. I hate what they did to Tails in Forces. And it's not like it's a new issue. It started in Unleashed.
@@growasowa3444 Yeah, unfortunately almost all of the characterization of all the Sonic characters have been gone for a while now. In fact, all the characters are one-note now. Not that I really ever expected an amazing show of character development from Sonic games, but we've seen with the Adventure games that the characters can be more complex than they are.
Sonic's cutscene afterwards is great too. Even though he knows the emeralds really well by now, not even *he* is sure that he can pull off Chaos Control using the fake. It's a pretty long distance back to the exterior of the colony too, since the capsule is traveling so quickly. And though we don't see it, we know that Sonic actually keeps that fake emerald (at least in the Dark story) because both Sonic and Shadow can use Chaos Control in the fight, depending on which storyline you're playing. Since there's no way he has an emerald at the time, Shadow probably has a reserve of Chaos energy or knows Chaos Control well enough to teleport very short distances without an Emerald. I doubt that Sonic would have that ability having used it only once, though. I'm enjoying these videos. Most of your recent videos have been pretty long, so this is good evidence that you can also convey your ideas in a more short-form, concise method, and I hope you continue to do some of that after this month.
Great video and thank you for taking the time to highlight what made it genuinely so great. I also adore the part where once Sonic has returned after using chaos control, in the lead up to the final showdown with Shadow, Sonic and Shadow just have a conversation that borders on a friendly rivalry. It's a scene full of great dialogue and character beats and is those 2 characters at some of their absolute best.
This scene is not only brilliant by itself but for the whole build before handed, there are many things leading for this cutscene, and while it was playing, many things happened too First of all the elements: Eggman and his tools, Sonic/Tails and their own tools, Amy, and both a real and a fake emerald First: Eggman was watching the records from when Sonic and Tails was discussing something, Tails was holding the last chaos emerald, in Eggman's POV, he wasn't able to paint a figure with that alone, the most he can figure is: They have a chaos emerald and the possibility for it be rigged in some way Second: Eggman was receiving two signals from presumable one chaos emerald, since the others six was already plugged in, he assumed they can have both a real and a fake, but the machine can't tell which one is it, since Tails made the artificial to be as real as it can get, except it can screw everything if plugged in the place of the real one, Eggman was sure that the fake emerald can be a deal breaker to his plans, because there wasn't any reason to create a fake if not with the intention to be rigged Third: Eggman decides that the best way to tell which one is which, is to reunite both Tails and Sonic in one place, since one of the emeralds signals was moving towards the "Battery" of the eclipse cannon, and the other become stationary somewhere, he decides to track the stationary signal, which ends up to be Tails with Amy by his side, so Eggman sees this as a golden opportunity to force both Sonic and Tails to be in the same place at the same time. And is here that you can say this whole scene starts to play out. Fourth: Eggman manages to take Amy as hostage and hijack the signal of Tails and Sonic, possible eavesdropping the talk of both before Tails, Tails and demands Sonic to meet them after the crazy gadget, probably Eggman is leading the way to the place with Amy as hostage and Tails at front, we don't know how much time it takes to Sonic get to the start of the Crazy Gadget, so in this ellipse of time Eggman was already midway or near the place while Sonic was in the start of the stage. Fifth: When Eggman tracks him at the start of the stage he gives his first advice, we don't know how much time canonically passed until Sonic ends the stage, but pretty sure after the second threat he already is in the meeting point, just waiting, probably while Sonic is travelling through the stage, Eggman was trying to force Tails to give him the answer, because if one fail, the other still has his share of secrets, maybe he was even trying to get something from Amy too Sixth: Sonic finally made in one piece to the meeting room choose by Eggman, and try to outsmart him, and Tails nods to him thinking the same, since they know which one is holding the real deal, Eggman demand to Sonic put the emerald in the middle, and Sonic go for it, even compliment his foe, something so interest, but so out of character of his nemesis, but there is a reason he chooses this room, it is because he already has laid all the pieces for his game, and he was already near his conclusion, and with his oldest stone on the shoes right in the middle, he finally did a significant move Seventh: As his enemy was there static of surprise, he will do something that can either grant him the glory or be his gravest mistake, he will do a bold claim while everyone has little to no time to think rationally about a proper response, affected by the surprise effect, a bluff per se, he will get a response no matter what, either to guarantee his own deductions or to indicate who is the one holding the truest seventh emerald, any second more he will go for the kill regards the consequences, and then from the smartest mouth besides himself, he obtains what he wants, and smugly thanks for the answer, demolishing any hope Tails had, and the only fault here is Tails own naivety, showing to them that talent and intelligence isn't enough to beat his own wisdom Eighth: Now knowing the truth, after destroying Tails ego, he allows his defeated enemy say his last words, words of incentive to both his friends, after this, the triumphant Eggman sentence Sonic's demise, properly dismissing his oldest arch-enemy while he is presumable exploded in the space, grieving, Amy falls in the ground, After such words, Tails creates enough resolve and courage to avenge his fallen friend and to accomplish what they started, neutralize the threat at any cost And the battle starts...
"You can even see him hang his head for Sonic" but then his continue blurb for this scene is him gleefully laughing about it. On a more serious note, notice how Shadow isn't in the room to see Sonic getting escape-podded while Amy's threatened with a gun. Yet his "ordinary hedgehog" comment upon seeing the explosion in the dark side story shows he had some understanding of what was going on, so...was he deliberately avoiding such a darkly-familiar sight?
Eggman always knew there was a fake emerald. In the Dark Story, Eggman got two yellow emeralds (he already had 6) on his radar when Sonic, Tails and Amy got onto the Ark. This is what tipped Eggman off to the fake emerald. Not what you guessed.
Well, thanks to that, Eggman knows that there is a fake emerald, but that's it - he doesn't know yet why. His ambush on Tails yields further information - that Sonic is supposed to place an emerald somewhere. Eggman doesn't know for sure if Sonic is holding the fake one, but that seems very likely, hence the gambit, since if Eggman is wrong and Sonic actually has the real one, that will tear apart his plan.
Gotta say one cutscene I really do enjoy is the brief dialogue between sonic and shadow before their boss battle. With the building music and then them slowly speeding up. It’s like Shadow comes to an understanding sonic. For the first time he can appreciate the fact that he’s not a fake but something completely different. Idk why but it just hits different.
Truly, SA2 finds us with an Eggman at his most efficient, most brutal and merciless. It's not even fair to call him Eggman in this game. He truly is the Doctor. The Robotnik family are no joke in this universe. Love this game lol
I think another amazing thing about this cutscene is that is exemplifies the theme of this game. This entire game asks you to question what is real and what is fake, what is the original and what is the copy. That's the point of Sonic and Shadow's dynamic, you constantly asking who is the original and who is the fake, the characters are asking this two. Both hedgehogs feels so stronger that the other one is a faker because how can it be that there are two similar looking hedgehogs with the same powers of super speed? The player automatically think Sonic is real at first and that Shadow is the fake because Sonic has been around for 10 years and Shadow just got introduced. But this initially assumption is damaged when Shadow proves he can do things Sonic simply can't like Chaos Control. This hints at Sonic being a fake because as a copy he would be inferior to the original. And later in the game we learn that Shadow is older than Sonic and this is yet more evidence that Sonic is somehow a newer copy of Shadow. And the Real and Rake Chaos Emeralds mimic this dynamic. One is fake and the other is real. And just like Shadow, Sonic was ejected from the space colony is a capsule. But the crazy thing is that later in the cutscene, even though the Chaos Emeralds is a fake is can still do Chaos Control. It's almost like the game is telling you it's ok to be a copy because you can still do what the original can, like you can be your own individual regardless. And that's pretty much the conclusions that both Shadow and Sonic reach. Neither of them ever figure out who is the fake if any of them even are a fake. Rogue tries to convince Shadow that he might be fake but it doesn't mater to him. He says "It's still me, Shadow". His identity and belief in himself is so strong that he simply does not care if he is a copy. Sonic sums it pretty much hate same way to. When asked by Shadow "Who are you?", Sonic answers with "What you see is what you get! Just a guy who loves adventure!" That line pretty much the entire message of the game. It doesn't matter who you are or what powers you have. It doesn't matter if you are the original or a copy. All that that matters is that you know who you are and have belief in your identity because being a copy doesn't define you, *it's ultimately who you chose to be that makes you who you are.* And I thinks that's a pretty powerful message for a game about a blue hedgehog that loves adventure. ;-)
I also like the last two lines from Amy and Tails. Amy's "Sonic!" Into defeated crying is just exemplary voice work. Especially for a game in 2001. But it's Tails here that really blows me away. With Sonic gone and Eggman having the upper hand he almost indignantly says that if Tails gives him the real chaos emerald he'll release them both. Tails doesn't even hear this. Focused only on the last words of encouragement given to him by his best friend. Give him the last chaos emerald? Are you kidding? You have just made the biggest mistake of your life and Tails is going to show how powerless you really are!
One little bit that gets covered up because of the music, Sonic was cracking during his goodbyes. During that pause when he was addressing Amy, he's actually holding back a sniffle. He realizes that this is the last time he may see his friends ever, but he's still putting on a brave face despite his own fear so that they can keep on fighting.
There's also a cutscene where Eggman gets a reading from two emeralds when he has 6 when the heroes come aboard ARK. So he pretty much had an idea the whole time
You serious? did you forget what Tails said about the fake emerald having the same wavelength and properties as a real chaos emerald? If you even played Sonic Adventure 2 and got this point at least on the hero story you would know that Sonic got out of it with chaos control.
He didn't,he used the fake emerald to choas control, next scene shadow says the sonic might be the ultimate life form because Ihe was able to warp with a fake emerald.
Ok, but can we talk about my bro, Tails, and his shining moment here? Eggman totally eradicated his plan. He thinks his best friend in the world has been blown to smithereens and all because he was duped into blowing their cover. He must feel like an idiot, yet he still has the courage to go metal toe-to-toe with the man who emotionally wrecked him in a strafe-shootout mech fight. And, canonically, he wins. His courage holds up high and he wins. (He thinks) his friend is avenged. As awkward as Sonic Adventure 2 can be, I think that this is one of Tails’ finest moments.

When you see Eggman’s crops
He was even reviewing the security footage back in Hidden Base, where he sees the moment Tails showed the crew his fake emerald.
"Because you just told me, Fox boy." Probably one of the few times Eggman uses his 300IQ to trick someone *other* *than* Knuckles.

You have to realized Egg-man was in a 50/50 mix-up with team sonic and he guessed right when it mattered the most
If he guessed wrong and sonic carried the real emerald cause of his fear for his friends danger (which he could assume because the original ransom plan relied) he just sent emerald on one way ticket to the vacuum and space and has to go get again which just gives team sonic more time to destroy the cannon
Eggman used respectable prediction, deception and mental manipulation

What about his recap where he said he was pleased with finally defeating that Hedgehog?
(Especially after the Events of Shadow The Hedgehog where we learn that Gun stormed the Ark out of a Misunderstanding, they thought Proffessor Gerald was Building the Eclipse Cannon to take over the world but it was built so Shadow could use it to Destroy the Black Comet when it returned.)

Use it!
Agree even if she was a heavy wieght at first she is who convinced shadow to turn a new page.
Sonic's calm & smug attitude during the situation is likely what made Eggman 100% sure that something wasn't right with the Emerald.
no, thats pretty obvious lmao
also explains why he didnt say "because you were too cocky"
Not 100% he still had the shuttle tube and got the answer out of tails for 100%

That Sonic "woah." at 2:27 is on-par with Knuckles' "oh no." Surprised it doesn't get as much attention.
In my opinion is something that sounds genuinely natural, it is the expected reaction to someone who is legitimate surprised, normally surprise is something temporary and fast, until it transforms into another emotion, so yeah you can only say a real quick "Woah" until you can grasp what happened
But the "Oh No" from Knuckles is bland as F. and in the contest of a fight, normally you don't expect something as bland as that "Oh No", you expect something like a grunt or a curse, not a simple "Oh no", and since it is unexpected it can give you involuntary laughing, and add to the mix such bland and non-natural line plus repetition, since it repeats 3 times in each battle, you can have a meme-worthy line
Yeah, it was something that happened in a split second with no discernible warning, so Sonic made an audible noise before he could even process what was going on. It's normal.

SA2 is an underrated gem, story-wise. There's so much cool stuff hidden under all that cheese.

Meanwhile in Sonic Forces...
Tails goes completely back to his cowardly sidekick self
Shadow 3.0 with "IM THE ULTIMATE MERCENARY"
Growa Sowa Eh While it did start in Unleashed I do see the reason why they did. Because of Chip.
Sonic sounded so frustrated that Tails told Eggman it was a fake emerald, that shit had me crying.
I love how homie was trying so hard not to say *SUPER LASER PISS!*
Lazula In the pre-fight cutscene, in the Hero Story, Sonic holds up the fake Emerald and tells Shadow that he saved him.
I think Shadow was able to use Sonic's fake Emerald from a somewhat short distance.
3:46 i want a compilation of Sonic looking pissed
I love how the music kicks in when Eggman first traps sonic and calls him out on the emerald
0:54 "Except I'm not gonna piss on the earth, I'm gonna go higher"
What made this so epic was this was the first (and as far as I know only) time I saw Eggman holding a gun let alone to Amy’s head.
I just realized that Sonic stopped Eggman's super laser piss by inserting a piss rock in his cannon
STOP.
1:49 "I'M GONNA SHOOT AMY IN THE FUCKING HEAD"
voice acting aside, this is some clever writing.
With the line "youv'e turned into a big time Doctor" does anyone else hear ben Schwartz's voce
Ben Schwartz's Sonic does sounds very close to Ryan Drummond's Sonic except a little bit deeper.
VB 26Mistral Ryan’s Sonic voice sounds deeper than Ben’s to me.
Sonic: “Guess what everybody, it’s your favorite boy..”
Eggman: “GET THE FUCK OUT OR I’LL SHOOT AMY IN THE FACE!”
This scene is not only brilliant by itself but for the whole build before handed, there are many things leading for this cutscene, and while it was playing, many things happened too
First of all the elements: Eggman and his tools, Sonic/Tails and their own tools, Amy, and both a real and a fake emerald
First: Eggman was watching the records from when Sonic and Tails was discussing something, Tails was holding the last chaos emerald, in Eggman's POV, he wasn't able to paint a figure with that alone, the most he can figure is: They have a chaos emerald and the possibility for it be rigged in some way
Second: Eggman was receiving two signals from presumable one chaos emerald, since the others six was already plugged in, he assumed they can have both a real and a fake, but the machine can't tell which one is it, since Tails made the artificial to be as real as it can get, except it can screw everything if plugged in the place of the real one, Eggman was sure that the fake emerald can be a deal breaker to his plans, because there wasn't any reason to create a fake if not with the intention to be rigged
Third: Eggman decides that the best way to tell which one is which, is to reunite both Tails and Sonic in one place, since one of the emeralds signals was moving towards the "Battery" of the eclipse cannon, and the other become stationary somewhere, he decides to track the stationary signal, which ends up to be Tails with Amy by his side, so Eggman sees this as a golden opportunity to force both Sonic and Tails to be in the same place at the same time.
Fifth: When Eggman tracks him at the start of the stage he gives his first advice, we don't know how much time canonically passed until Sonic ends the stage, but pretty sure after the second threat he already is in the meeting point, just waiting, probably while Sonic is travelling through the stage, Eggman was trying to force Tails to give him the answer, because if one fail, the other still has his share of secrets, maybe he was even trying to get something from Amy too
Sixth: Sonic finally made in one piece to the meeting room choose by Eggman, and try to outsmart him, and Tails nods to him thinking the same, since they know which one is holding the real deal, Eggman demand to Sonic put the emerald in the middle, and Sonic go for it, even compliment his foe, something so interest, but so out of character of his nemesis, but there is a reason he chooses this room, it is because he already has laid all the pieces for his game, and he was already near his conclusion, and with his oldest stone on the shoes right in the middle, he finally did a significant move
Seventh: As his enemy was there static of surprise, he will do something that can either grant him the glory or be his gravest mistake, he will do a bold claim while everyone has little to no time to think rationally about a proper response, affected by the surprise effect, a bluff per se, he will get a response no matter what, either to guarantee his own deductions or to indicate who is the one holding the truest seventh emerald, any second more he will go for the kill regards the consequences, and then from the smartest mouth besides himself, he obtains what he wants, and smugly thanks for the answer, demolishing any hope Tails had, and the only fault here is Tails own naivety, showing to them that talent and intelligence isn't enough to beat his own wisdom
Eighth: Now knowing the truth, after destroying Tails ego, he allows his defeated enemy say his last words, words of incentive to both his friends, after this, the triumphant Eggman sentence Sonic's demise, properly dismissing his oldest arch-enemy while he is presumable exploded in the space, grieving, Amy falls in the ground, After such words, Tails creates enough resolve and courage to avenge his fallen friend and to accomplish what they started, neutralize the threat at any cost
And the battle starts...
3:30 is the greatest moment for tails
Eggman was a straight GANGSTA in this scene. Definitely one of the highlights of his career
I had never had seen a person talk about a cutscene like this.
Just a guy who loves adventure!"
That line pretty much the entire message of the game. It doesn't matter who you are or what powers you have. It doesn't matter if you are the original or a copy. All that that matters is that you know who you are and have belief in your identity because being a copy doesn't define you, *it's ultimately who you chose to be that makes you who you are.* And I thinks that's a pretty powerful message for a game about a blue hedgehog that loves adventure. ;-)
I thought the reason Eggman was suspicious in the first place is because Shadow told him he couldn’t sense the emerald
So he pretty much had an idea the whole time
That capsule that launched Sonic into space is the same capsule that launched Shadow 50 years before. Also it was by a Robotnik.
Tails looking like the Pikachu shocked meme 2:35
2:58 Sonic be dancing til hes dead
That hit to his pride as an intellectual, and then the rise to action after. Surely this is development that will stay with Tails forever...
Dude Sonic just frickin' died this cutscene is insane and so are you
You serious? did you forget what Tails said about the fake emerald having the same wavelength and properties as a real chaos emerald? If you even played Sonic Adventure 2 and got this point at least on the hero story you would know that Sonic got out of it with chaos control.
He didn't,he used the fake emerald to choas control, next scene shadow says the sonic might be the ultimate life form because Ihe was able to warp with a fake emerald.
@@Sly88Frye Calm down there buddy, for all we know they didn't play the game.
I was waiting for this to be the cutscene where Eggman pisses on the moon
