Another only tangentially related thing; in the "Principal's" office one can see there's a window on the right side.. But how is that even possible?! The fake doctor's office is right next to his!
You can tell just by looking at it that the window is fake. Perhaps an intentional clue, as if you were to look through the fake window you would be looking in the direction of the doctor's office, which is currently in use by a fake doctor.
One thing that could lean into this reason is that there were two unused rooms for the Kindergarten: The Library and the Playground. It could be reasoned that the Playground would be accessible from the right of the Chao Doctor or Principle. Also noting that both the Medical Centre and Principle's Office have windows on the right, it could also simply be a room design choice.
Omochao has this unused line in the game: "Did you know the doctor's moustache is fake?" We know this refers to the Chao doctor because in the Japanese version he says "Chao hakase".

The Fortune teller could be key in understanding why the doctor did what he did. Some kind of bad future avoidance perhaps? Or maybe she told him what would happen if he DID overthrow the principle... Unless she's part of the same gang as the doctor and laughing guy. They worked together to overthrow the principle and now they each fill their own roles, buying from the black market to fill their needs

(This is far from the only reference to Japanese culture in the _Sonic_ franchise. Same here, I played Chao Garden so many times and somehow I still missed the small details in the background because I was so focused on raising my chaos.
Huh, you know as you started discussing the "principal", I was kind of assuming the twist was that he actually is the Black Market Chao. Not only are there all the connections you pointed out, they're also the only set Chao who wear glasses, plus why else would he have the portrait there. Also, I don't think the intent has to necessarily be malicious. Note that we're never introduced to any sign of Chao government of any description, and you don't pay for any of the official kindergarten services. It's very possible that the Black Market is actually the only thing keeping the school afloat, but the real principal objected on moral grounds, and so had to be gotten out of the way.
I was so skeptical at first considering the short video and it being a conspiracy about the Chao kindergarten of all things, but when you pointed out the portrait in the black market, all the pieces fell into place and my mind was blown to bits. All the weird things I noticed as a kid and even up until now that I just shrugged off as being 'just weird' were actually pieces of such a crazy puzzle! This all really has been in front of our faces for so long in the form of these small details that a kid would never think to put together like this. The Chao kindergarten may be tainted in my eyes now, but honestly I think this makes it so much better. This is one of the wildest conspiracies that has come out of this game that actually has the solid evidence to boot, you know, aside from the 'Rouge's boobs being made up of more than one polygon' theory.
I did wonder about that picture in the black market. Though why did they draw hair on it? Neither the principal nor the doctor have hair, but the chao in the health center does. There's other stuff on the picture too, but I'm sure it could be better examined if we had the image file to look at. The only one left to be discussed too would be the fortune teller chao. Was she complicit?
Translating チャオ博士 as Dr Chao here isn't wrong but very misleading... 博士 is more like someone with a doctorate (hence why it's used like the Dr title), not necessarily a medical doctor. Think Professor Oak (オーキド博士) and you would have a better idea on what it means. Considering he isn't giving medical advice but seems to know everything about chao, you're probably more accurate calling him Professor Chao in English. Fun video though regardless.

the Health Center reminds me of the Hotti Clinic, from PhoenixWright:AceAttorney, where the 'doctor' is more likely a patient insane enough to Impersonate the doctor, while the Actual doctor's whereabouts are left vague (or, in this case, if the Chao Doctor is the Chao Principal...but i always took the "Dr. Chao" part of the Japanese line to mean 'I have a Ph.D', not 'i am a Medical Doctor')

Just a change of glasses and a mask to cover up his beard (or apparently that mustache is fake based on some other comments??). I've always felt that the "chao" in the kindergarten are also humans just dressed up as Chao, since they are capable of speaking and performing jobs, which no other chao seems to be capable of.
I think they're intended to make the usual Chao noises and you just understand what they mean, somehow. Like Cream. In the Tiny Chao Garden you can see your Chao talk like that as well.
But what if we actually have all this wrong? What if the new principal/Doctor Chao and Black Market Chao are trying to help but they former Principal was against it so they made a plot to get rid of him? Think about it this way, the black market is the only way to get the other fruits, that dont grow in the three gardens, meaning that he must have some connections. And you get the fruits either by buying them directly from him or later by buying the seeds for the fruit trees and have your Chao plant them. Would someone trying to rip you off sell you the means of production to his wares? "But then why is he selling Chao eggs if he has good intentions?" you may ask yourself now, but what if those egg were rescued from somewhere and he just wants to ensure that are finacially able to take care of it, we know what lengths the Black Market Chao went to to get these eggs, so he wants to be 100% sure they are in good hands. Here is how it could have played out, the Doctor Chao and the Black Market Chao have known each other for a long time, even before the Doctor started working in the Chao Kindergarten and the Black Market Chao always was his first contact if he needed something special, and one day the Black Market Chao infromed the Doctor about the many different fruits some of his contacts were starting to grow, the Doctor saw the possible health benefits for the young Chao and asked the Principal if his friend could make a shop inside the Kindergarten. But the Principal was absolutly furious and he almost fired the Doctor right right there, saying he doesnt care about what the fruits could do, he wouldnt let anyone interfere with his way of leading the Kindergarten. The Doctor then met up with the Black Market Chao later that day, where he told him how furious he was at the reaction of the Principal, ignoring the good those fruits could do just because it wasnt his idea...that was when the Black Market Chao came up with a plan, one of his contacts found a chemical reaction that seemed to turn things into stone, and if the Doctor would take time to research it, he could maybe turn someone into a solution that would turn someone into a living statue. After a long discussion he decided to go through the plan, leaving the Kindergarten to research the "Medusa formula" as the Black Market Chao dubbed it, during this time the Principal hired the Chao who currently sits in the Doctors office. After the Doctor managed to fully complete the formula, he and the Black Market Chao went through with their plan, ambushing the Principal after dark and spraying the formula on him, turning his body to stone with him still living inside it, the new "Doctor" Chao saw them do it, but he agreed to stay silent if they let him keep pretending to be the doctor at the Kindergarten. The Doctor and Black Market Chao agreed, since they would need to have the doctor position filled anyways if the Doctor pretends to be the new Principal, under the condition that from now on he does nothing besides simple check-ups and sends sick Chao to him, and as a reminder to keep him in check, they left the bottle inside the doctors office to make sure he behaves. The Doctor then settled into the Principals office, keeping the former Principal in his office to show how much better everything runs now, and ever since the Doctor took over the Kindergarten, the young Chao are more healthy and happy. He now recommends every Chao parent to visit his trusted friend the Black Market Chao, who now set up shop inside the Kindergarten, if they ever need anything for their Chao, while the "Doctor" keeps playing his role and the Fotrune Teller Chao, who already saw all this before it even happend, didnt interfere because she knew that its would have a positive outcome in the end.
When I started watching this video I took it as a joke and was being amused. However the longer it went on the more I actually started to believe the conspiracy and now I think I'm fully convinced in the conspiracy.
This is a really fun theory here! I had always thought the Kindergarten had some shady stuff going on, especially with a *Black Market* just sitting there in the closet and no one batting an eye. Black Market deals with live export trade of rare Chao eggs, fruits/seeds and other items not typically found in the Chao Gardens - where does all this stuff come from? Do we assume these are procured by the Black Market by illegal and immoral means?? One thing the video didn't touch on was the motive - why get rid of the Principle in the first place? They could have easily been blackmailed or otherwise deceived - but no, they were *literally* removed from power and replaced. One logical reason would be the principle was going to dox the Black Market and shutdown the whole business, only to be retaliated against by the staff (or more specifically, the Chao Doctor + accomplices) Other fun nuggets of info which could add to this theory: - 1# Time passes in the Chao Gardens, but not the Kindergarten. If the real Principle was killed off where time doesn't pass, does this mean their body remains in constant stasis unable to decompose/disappear much like we see in Chao going inside the death cocoon in the gardens? Also interesting to note that none of the staff actually age, either. Although there is a framed picture of the Fortune Teller who looks younger (unless that is a past Fortune Teller?) - 2# Omochao's dialogue "Did you know the Doctor's moustache is fake?" - Originally I thought this was referring the the Chao Doctor (principle), and could hold up with this in context for the Kindergarten - 3# There are two unused rooms in the Kindergarten, the Playground and Library. These were removed likely due to time constraints and technology limitations, as they were going to use internet features. I can't remember exactly where these were intended to be placed, but vaguely recall they had numbered identifiers in the code the hinted they would placed around the Medical Center. Also interesting to note that some rooms in the Kindergarten have windows, despite being directly next to another room. That could have hinted that an additional open area was going to be next to these rooms (Principal's Office and Medical Center). Just a fun detail that could add to the Kindergarten conspiracy, pretty easy to hide the rest of the body in a place that no longer exists! - 4# Although this is likely just a glitch, there is an (unsettling) oddity within the Kindergarten where a Chao taken to the classroom can mysteriously disappear (I think it only happens when the Chao is in the first slot but I could be mistaken), and is replaced by a nameless chao with all E ranks. The original Chao essentially gets held hostage with no clear way of retrieving them from the classroom. This usually gets triggered when altering the game files, but if you retrieve a Chao that completed a lesson isn't supposed to exist, you can get the dialogue "Your Chao learned Your Chao Missed you... Visit the class again.". The 'Your Chao Missed you... ' part is unused dialogue assigned to the Classroom, probably a placeholder if the game couldn't find what the original lesson was. Again, it's probably only a glitch (albeit a strange one ripe for a creepypasta), that doesn't help with the Chao Kindergarten's case of trying to be a safe and educational space for Chao. - ?# Bit of fun hypothesising here - but who the hell is running the Medical Center then? This Chao is... odd to say the least. Also this is the only Chao that has the animal parts - specifically the adult head piece of a Condor (same size/shape but with different colour). Could we assume this Chao was once raised in the Chao Gardens but later taken in to be trained as Kindergarten staff? Maybe this Chao came from the Forest? A visual semblance of the forest can be seen behind the Kindergarten when entering. Maybe this Chao was originally assigned to run the other unused rooms (Library/Playground), or was the Chao Doctor's assistant?
I imagine this means Chao Gardens are a front for illegal activities, and their absence despite the continued existence of Chao implies after Sonic Adventure 2, the "principal" and the black market vendor are arrested, perhaps the fake doctor too, and Chao eggs are no longer sold as property. This implies that Sonic & friends have purchased illegal goods, but given the government didn't have Rouge step in to stop Eggman from blowing up Prison Island, the Moon, or even having her steal the Chaos Emeralds to shut down the cannon before the final story like she attempted to at one point and was not stopped from doing so, it's possible this conspiracy runs far deeper... or the government forgave Sonic for buying there because nobody suspected it was illegal.
i always found it weird that the chao emotion ball thingies looked like they were attached to the top of the chaos in the kindergarten rather than floating in the air. maybe that was intentional too, because the statute in the principals office looks like the ball is floating correctly. i'd imagine it would be easier to render a flat image that the emotion balls use rather than a rasterized textured polygons like the kindergarten chaos use, but i'm not familiar at all with the hardware, so idk. maybe it's just a camera perspective thing

I've always wonder what sort of business was going in the background of the Chao Kindergarten. However, the Black Market isn't just in Sonic Adventure 2, it has made an appearance in Sonic Adventure 1 within the Station Square Garden and another Black Market appeared in the Sonic Riders series (the first and second games). Makes you wonder if they were running an underground chain in different locations..
Alright, I'm all-in on this conspiracy. This gives Darth JarJar a run for it's money. Also, I'm wondering if the "doctor" isn't a medical doctor, but a mental doctor, and this place is a psych ward that is now run by the patients, as it so often happens.
As someone who has never played SA2 and thus has no context for the kindergarten, I thought you were going to go in the direction of the “principal” and the black market seller being the same chao. It makes some sense to me at least - it gives them a motive to delete the old principal (allowing them to continue their black market dealings uninhibited), they both wear opaque eyewear to help hide their identity, and the black market chao wears a face mask despite (most) chao having no mouths, meaning it could be to hide their facial hair. The only real problem I can think of is how they manage to get between the principal’s office and the black market stall so quickly without being caught.

can i ask, is there any way the fortune teller plays into this? it always seemed very odd to have off, almost religious practice occurring in the kindergarten, especially with the bait-and-switch from being called the “Fortune Teller” into being told “You won’t get your fortune told here.”
The Fortune teller could be key in understanding why the doctor did what he did. Some kind of bad future avoidance perhaps? Or maybe she told him what would happen if he DID overthrow the principle...

If you want to know why there is a fortune teller in the Chao Kindergarten and why it is used to name the player's Chao, in Japan, there is a type of fortune teller known as "Seimei Handan" or "Onomancer", who specialize in naming children.
(This is far from the only reference to Japanese culture in the _Sonic_ franchise. Other notable instances include Tails being envisioned as a kitsune, the Curse of the Colonel being referenced in _Sonic Adventure_ through its infamous Burger Shop Statue, Dry Lagoon's gimmick of rescuing and riding a turtle referencing Urashima Tarō, and _Sonic & the Black Knight_ depicting Sir Gawain attempting to commit Seppuku.)

Same here, I played Chao Garden so many times and somehow I still missed the small details in the background because I was so focused on raising my chaos.
Huh, you know as you started discussing the "principal", I was kind of assuming the twist was that he actually is the Black Market Chao. Not only are there all the connections you pointed out, they're also the only set Chao who wear glasses, plus why else would he have the portrait there.
Also, I don't think the intent has to necessarily be malicious. Note that we're never introduced to any sign of Chao government of any description, and you don't pay for any of the official kindergarten services. It's very possible that the Black Market is actually the only thing keeping the school afloat, but the real principal objected on moral grounds, and so had to be gotten out of the way.
I was so skeptical at first considering the short video and it being a conspiracy about the Chao kindergarten of all things, but when you pointed out the portrait in the black market, all the pieces fell into place and my mind was blown to bits. All the weird things I noticed as a kid and even up until now that I just shrugged off as being 'just weird' were actually pieces of such a crazy puzzle! This all really has been in front of our faces for so long in the form of these small details that a kid would never think to put together like this. The Chao kindergarten may be tainted in my eyes now, but honestly I think this makes it so much better. This is one of the wildest conspiracies that has come out of this game that actually has the solid evidence to boot, you know, aside from the 'Rouge's boobs being made up of more than one polygon' theory.

Translating チャオ博士 as Dr Chao here isn't wrong but very misleading... 博士 is more like someone with a doctorate (hence why it's used like the Dr title), not necessarily a medical doctor. Think Professor Oak (オーキド博士) and you would have a better idea on what it means. Considering he isn't giving medical advice but seems to know everything about chao, you're probably more accurate calling him Professor Chao in English.

Zoom gotta say I never imagined this type of video but I like the idea. How about a conspiracy on the Echidnas from Sonic Chronicles. I know that means playing Sonic Chronicles but there were some cool ideas there that took advantage of some of the older lore.

the Health Center reminds me of the Hotti Clinic, from PhoenixWright:AceAttorney, where the 'doctor' is more likely a patient insane enough to Impersonate the doctor, while the Actual doctor's whereabouts are left vague (or, in this case, if the Chao Doctor is the Chao Principal...but i always took the "Dr. Chao" part of the Japanese line to mean 'I have a Ph.D', not 'i am a Medical Doctor')

I couldn't tell from the vid if you were meaning to imply the guy in the black market is the principle as well. Just a change of glasses and a mask to cover up his beard (or apparently that mustache is fake based on some other comments??). Okay but can we talk about how the Chao Kindergarten is literally a 5 second walk away from Chao Hell?
I've always felt that the "chao" in the kindergarten are also humans just dressed up as Chao, since they are capable of speaking and performing jobs, which no other chao seems to be capable of.
I think they're intended to make the usual Chao noises and you just understand what they mean, somehow. Like Cream. In the Tiny Chao Garden you can see your Chao talk like that as well.
The most horrifying thing that I can't unsee is that the principal is constantly clipping into his desk.
The doctor likely overthrew the principle so that he could establish his black market in the kindergarten. Truly a despicable man
But what if we actually have all this wrong? What if the new principal/Doctor Chao and Black Market Chao are trying to help but they former Principal was against it so they made a plot to get rid of him?
Think about it this way, the black market is the only way to get the other fruits, that dont grow in the three gardens, meaning that he must have some connections. And you get the fruits either by buying them directly from him or later by buying the seeds for the fruit trees and have your Chao plant them. Would someone trying to rip you off sell you the means of production to his wares?
"But then why is he selling Chao eggs if he has good intentions?" you may ask yourself now, but what if those egg were rescued from somewhere and he just wants to ensure that are finacially able to take care of it, we know what lengths the Black Market Chao went to to get these eggs, so he wants to be 100% sure they are in good hands.
Here is how it could have played out, the Doctor Chao and the Black Market Chao have known each other for a long time, even before the Doctor started working in the Chao Kindergarten and the Black Market Chao always was his first contact if he needed something special, and one day the Black Market Chao infromed the Doctor about the many different fruits some of his contacts were starting to grow, the Doctor saw the possible health benefits for the young Chao and asked the Principal if his friend could make a shop inside the Kindergarten. But the Principal was absolutly furious and he almost fired the Doctor right right there, saying he doesnt care about what the fruits could do, he wouldnt let anyone interfere with his way of leading the Kindergarten. The Doctor then met up with the Black Market Chao later that day, where he told him how furious he was at the reaction of the Principal, ignoring the good those fruits could do just because it wasnt his idea...that was when the Black Market Chao came up with a plan, one of his contacts found a chemical reaction that seemed to turn things into stone, and if the Doctor would take time to research it, he could maybe turn someone into a solution that would turn someone into a living statue. After a long discussion he decided to go through the plan, leaving the Kindergarten to research the "Medusa formula" as the Black Market Chao dubbed it, during this time the Principal hired the Chao who currently sits in the Doctors office. After the Doctor managed to fully complete the formula, he and the Black Market Chao went through with their plan, ambushing the Principal after dark and spraying the formula on him, turning his body to stone with him still living inside it, the new "Doctor" Chao saw them do it, but he agreed to stay silent if they let him keep pretending to be the doctor at the Kindergarten. The Doctor and Black Market Chao agreed, since they would need to have the doctor position filled anyways if the Doctor pretends to be the new Principal, under the condition that from now on he does nothing besides simple check-ups and sends sick Chao to him, and as a reminder to keep him in check, they left the bottle inside the doctors office to make sure he behaves. The Doctor then settled into the Principals office, keeping the former Principal in his office to show how much better everything runs now, and ever since the Doctor took over the Kindergarten, the young Chao are more healthy and happy. He now recommends every Chao parent to visit his trusted friend the Black Market Chao, who now set up shop inside the Kindergarten, if they ever need anything for their Chao, while the "Doctor" keeps playing his role and the Fotrune Teller Chao, who already saw all this before it even happend, didnt interfere because she knew that its would have a positive outcome in the end.

When I started watching this video I took it as a joke and was being amused. However the longer it went on the more I actually started to believe the conspiracy and now I think I'm fully convinced in the conspiracy.

I had always thought the Kindergarten had some shady stuff going on, especially with a *Black Market* just sitting there in the closet and no one batting an eye.
Black Market deals with live export trade of rare Chao eggs, fruits/seeds and other items not typically found in the Chao Gardens - where does all this stuff come from? Do we assume these are procured by the Black Market by illegal and immoral means??
One thing the video didn't touch on was the motive - why get rid of the Principle in the first place? They could have easily been blackmailed or otherwise deceived - but no, they were *literally* removed from power and replaced. One logical reason would be the principle was going to dox the Black Market and shutdown the whole business, only to be retaliated against by the staff (or more specifically, the Chao Doctor + accomplices)
Other fun nuggets of info which could add to this theory:
- 1# Time passes in the Chao Gardens, but not the Kindergarten. If the real Principle was killed off where time doesn't pass, does this mean their body remains in constant stasis unable to decompose/disappear much like we see in Chao going inside the death cocoon in the gardens? Also interesting to note that none of the staff actually age, either. Although there is a framed picture of the Fortune Teller who looks younger (unless that is a past Fortune Teller?)
- 2# Omochao's dialogue "Did you know the Doctor's moustache is fake?" - Originally I thought this was referring the the Chao Doctor (principle), and could hold up with this in context for the Kindergarten
- 3# There are two unused rooms in the Kindergarten, the Playground and Library. These were removed likely due to time constraints and technology limitations, as they were going to use internet features. I can't remember exactly where these were intended to be placed, but vaguely recall they had numbered identifiers in the code the hinted they would placed around the Medical Center. Also interesting to note that some rooms in the Kindergarten have windows, despite being directly next to another room. That could have hinted that an additional open area was going to be next to these rooms (Principal's Office and Medical Center). Just a fun detail that could add to the Kindergarten conspiracy, pretty easy to hide the rest of the body in a place that no longer exists!
- 4# Although this is likely just a glitch, there is an (unsettling) oddity within the Kindergarten where a Chao taken to the classroom can mysteriously disappear (I think it only happens when the Chao is in the first slot but I could be mistaken), and is replaced by a nameless chao with all E ranks. The original Chao essentially gets held hostage with no clear way of retrieving them from the classroom. This usually gets triggered when altering the game files, but if you retrieve a Chao that completed a lesson isn't supposed to exist, you can get the dialogue "Your Chao learned Your Chao Missed you... Visit the class again.". The 'Your Chao Missed you... ' part is unused dialogue assigned to the Classroom, probably a placeholder if the game couldn't find what the original lesson was. Again, it's probably only a glitch (albeit a strange one ripe for a creepypasta), that doesn't help with the Chao Kindergarten's case of trying to be a safe and educational space for Chao.
- ?# Bit of fun hypothesising here - but who the hell is running the Medical Center then? This Chao is... odd to say the least. Also this is the only Chao that has the animal parts - specifically the adult head piece of a Condor (same size/shape but with different colour). Could we assume this Chao was once raised in the Chao Gardens but later taken in to be trained as Kindergarten staff? Maybe this Chao came from the Forest? A visual semblance of the forest can be seen behind the Kindergarten when entering. Maybe this Chao was originally assigned to run the other unused rooms (Library/Playground), or was the Chao Doctor's assistant?

I imagine this means Chao Gardens are a front for illegal activities, and their absence despite the continued existence of Chao implies after Sonic Adventure 2, the "principal" and the black market vendor are arrested, perhaps the fake doctor too, and Chao eggs are no longer sold as property. This implies that Sonic & friends have purchased illegal goods, but given the government didn't have Rouge step in to stop Eggman from blowing up Prison Island, the Moon, or even having her steal the Chaos Emeralds to shut down the cannon before the final story like she attempted to at one point and was not stopped from doing so, it's possible this conspiracy runs far deeper... or the government forgave Sonic for buying there because nobody suspected it was illegal.
i always found it weird that the chao emotion ball thingies looked like they were attached to the top of the chaos in the kindergarten rather than floating in the air.
maybe that was intentional too, because the statute in the principals office looks like the ball is floating correctly. i'd imagine it would be easier to render a flat image that the emotion balls use rather than a rasterized textured polygons like the kindergarten chaos use, but i'm not familiar at all with the hardware, so idk. maybe it's just a camera perspective thing

I've always wonder what sort of business was going in the background of the Chao Kindergarten. However, the Black Market isn't just in Sonic Adventure 2, it has made an appearance in Sonic Adventure 1 within the Station Square Garden and another Black Market appeared in the Sonic Riders series (the first and second games).

As someone who has never played SA2 and thus has no context for the kindergarten, I thought you were going to go in the direction of the “principal” and the black market seller being the same chao. It makes some sense to me at least - it gives them a motive to delete the old principal (allowing them to continue their black market dealings uninhibited), they both wear opaque eyewear to help hide their identity, and the black market chao wears a face mask despite (most) chao having no mouths, meaning it could be to hide their facial hair. The only real problem I can think of is how they manage to get between the principal’s office and the black market stall so quickly without being caught.
