Awesome video! I just got my CRZ a couple months ago as my first car! and i agree that everything for this car is ridiculously expensive and not worth it. Enjoying it stock is probably the way to go power wise. Looking into a Mugen Body Kit for mine but its hard to find anything.
You're the first channel that i've seen that posts about the CRZ. Please keep up the content im excited to hear your opinions and the journey you take with this car! It would be great to get some inspiration for mine as well :)

I am in the same limbo with my manual crz, power mods or bolt ons in general are too expensive for this car. Thinking of just enjoying my 35+ mpgs with coils and wheels.

I agree man. Just wish it was cheaper to make power in this car 😔

I drive a '17 86 and always thought these CRZs looked dope. I think a car being worth modding really only depends on how much you want to personally.
My old car was an 03 Camry V6 that I did some tiny mods on and loved to bits. I'd have dropped a lot of money on modding that car and didn't want to stop driving it, but I eventually realized the platform was just too limited with zero aftermarket support. Even doing something like an exhaust or bolt-on turbo on that car was pretty much unknown territory. The CRZ has much more aftermarket but it's much harder to do mods. And the CVT is a biiig hurdle of course.
If I owned this CRZ and was planning on driving it a lot I'd do coilovers, sway bars, bushings, tires before anything else.
best of luck to you and your future projects my guy!

I agree man. I mainly touched on the power mods but realistically you could just make this thing look coil with coils and a nice set of wheels. Then follow it up with nice suspension to go along with it for a nicer ride

That road is God awful oh my gosh. I love these cars though. Thanks for this video! Always wanted to see someone's take.

Lmao the hilly road🤣? Glad it helped you. As someone who hasn't modified a crz yet this was my thought process when deciding what to modify on it as well as If it's even worth it

It wasn't a 'Sports Car'; it was a 'Sporty Hybrid'.
Before I say more, let me explain my current perspective.
I could buy a FK8 Type R for 40k. I could buy a FD RX-7 for 60k and get 20 mpg. I could buy an old V8 muscle car for 20k and get 9 mpg. I could get a 40k truck and get 20 mpg. I love vehicles and there are a lot of things I dream of.
What I can also do is ... buy a Hondata 6psi Turbocharger kit for the CVT CR-Z. I also consider getting a 6MT and do a HPD or HKS supercharger kit as well. Both cars would have less total invested than one of the vehicles I would consider. Both would feel fast and get good fuel mileage. They would be modern and safe (opposed to a 25k supercharged Mk1b 89 MR2).
I've owned or immediate family has owned thus I've driven freely many vehicles from all varieties. The CR-Z is clean, solid. It is faster and the cabin more well thought out than any CR-X was, I've owned a 84 Si and a close friend owned an 89 DX. Having driven a lot of cars in the late 90s early 00s era ... it is not as fast as a Eclipse GS-T but maybe close to a NA FC RX-7. It isn't as loud or stiff as a 91 Vette. It feels faster than a 19 BRZ AT, slower than a Shinka RX-8. It is miles faster than a 05 Civic Hybrid or a 3rd gen Prius. I don't find it 'fast' at all. My kids are impressed, their mother is. I find it fun, economical, worth it.
I wouldn't mind say a WRX STi Hyperblue or Type-RA; but 30-40k+ 20 mpg, and problematic and expensive. Rotaries. I'd love to have an NA and TII FC, a stock sequential twin turbo FD and a 20B FD; but I can't buy one for 9k any longer like I almost did in Sanford back in the late 90s. I plan on being able to rebuild them myself some day; but that day is not today so I won't own one until I'm ready. The mother of my kids has a Trail Boss Silverado that gets 18 mpg Premium fuel highway. Not looking to add to the gas guzzling part of the family too much. I'll buy a 2005 Civic Hybrid and put 05/06 RSX Type-S or Acura EL seats and call it a day at 45-50+ mpg and STILL modify two CR-Zs and be relatively happy until I can build rotaries for myself :p
I've owned and driven 70s muscle cars and land yachts to being a porter at a lot where I got to take out 6.0 GTOs, CTS-Vs, C6s, etc. and many things in between.
The CR-Z isn't perfect; but it is far better than an 89 Isuzu I-Mark RS, and that wasn't half bad either for a little econobox with a sporty suspension ;)

TL;DR look into the Hondata turbo data; they tested a CVT until breaking and then set up a turbo system for 6 psi that they feel is beyond safe; the CVT isn't that weak, just has a torque limit.
Ofc they didn't release a number; but imagine it was 200 lb-ft; then you would be able to smoothly roll onto that power and hold it at any point in the RPM band and be completely safe. WRXs come with CVTs but not STis as there is a safe torque limit and STIs pass it. Owners of WRXs have added cooling to increase the limit reliably but that is not my intention here. We are under the limit, by enough margin that Hondata felt 6 psi is safe and long term reliable (for whatever size turbo they are using).
For me it would be mostly a non-issue. I don't drive my cars hard almost at all any longer. I would redline my RX-8 when I had it about every outing, but never drove it like I did my 88 GXL RX-7 I had as a teen. I use S+ mode to get up to highway speed and it goes back to Eco; getting about 41 mpg back and forth to work and occasional taking one of the kids out for a cruise and playing a bit with S+ for their amusement.
Adding a Turbo to the CVT model or a Supercharger to the 6MT model is purely for me and my collector personality. It has nothing to do with being the fastest, it is about passion for a vehicle, for autos in general. Personalization. Sleeper builds. Making something you own or yourself/mind/body the best (it) can be.
Outside Preventative Maintenance; everything we do with our cars is fluff and unnecessary. 200 rating tires won't make anyone a better driver; just get them closer to an edge they can't handle the lower limit of. Suspension that makes for an uncomfortable ride on a car that will never see a track or autocross. Wraps and paint jobs, tint, wheels, etc. There is always a faster, better car, better investment of time and money ... but at some point that all should break down because what really matters comes down to what perspective you are willing to let yourself view the world from. Sometimes we control it, sometimes it controls us.

I really appreciate the lengthy writeup, seems like you've been around the block for a bit😄. Although I do love the crz platform I feel as MYSELF personally would never modify a cvt. Although you gave good evidence where it can handle 6lbs of boost, I understand. Almost any transmission can handle 6lbs of boost but the question is how long. I don't think very long. Personally even if it came with a good auto trans I'd prefer the manual as that's always what I've liked since ever!
