Gotta mention he’s nearly 4 hours into this concert. Most vocalists would’ve expired long before this and 40 years of marathon shows and he hasn’t blown out his voice he’s a beast
My dad saw him and would always mention that fact of playing whole shows. Blew my mind thats a lot of endurance especially back in the day without ac haha
Springsteen's strengths are as a songwriter, a storyteller, and a performer, not necessarily as a singer. Going to one of his shows is not just being taken to church, it's a revival. It's the energy, the music, the stories. Everyone else remembers "Twinkle Twinkle" or "Mary Had a Little Lamb" as their first songs, and I remember Born in the USA.
It makes no sense to me when people say that...he has a wonderful voice. I think most people who bash him do so because of his earnestness and activism.
Often the arm chair vocal critics are ignorant and think to be classed as a being able to sing is to hit the impressive high money notes and being technically pitch perfect and yes Bruce was never one of these type of singers. However singing is much more than that....it is also about producing a FEEL to what you sing and making people FEEL what you FEEL. Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits (whose pitch aren't that great either) and many more not considered prowess vocalists can't sing by those standards either but their FEEL is massively musical and emotional with a great connection to the lyrics they sing. Even Justin Bieber is said by those people to not being able to sing but honestly do you really think it makes any sense to sell millions and millions of records if they truly cannot sing??? If it was that easy then wouldn't it be the case that any random person who can hold a tune will be able to be international selling artists?
I’d say he’s in the Bob Dylan, Kurt Cobain category of singers-more emotion than natural talent, but such a unique voice you either love it or hate it. I love all three so no complaints from me.
I found some folks saying that about his voice when Born in the USA came out, because the feel of that song calls for a more primal "scream"; and since that song was so popular at the time you heard it a lot on the radio and some associated that as his main singing style. But so much of his catalog is not that style.
When people say that, it's pure technical. Bob Dylan and Thom York are good examples. Both not good singers (technically) but holy fuck, the emotion, the tone, the performance, the personality, the songwriting and all that stuff are top tier.
Just as a heads up to anyone who hasn't seen this performance of the song, where it cuts in the above video, Bruce brings his mother out on stage for a dance, and then his sister after her to play the guitar with him for the end of the song. So damn cool, and so well done...
I absolutely love this performance. In fact, it’s my go to video to watch to psyche myself up when I’m performing with rock choir especially if I’m doing a solo with the lads. Love the bit where he gets his mum on stage. The guy is oozing love for his job here!
I truly love your appreciation for great music. Along with great knowledge of vocals, your passion and love for music is what really stands out in your videos. Keep up the great work!
Really, listen to his Wild and the innocent album. Particularly "New York City Serenade" His voice was more elastic and hit some beautiful notes. His voice these days is more mature...less flexibility.
agree! there are others with this kind of voice, but way "deeper" . just check this guy's voice (intro is a bit long) th-cam.com/video/fuVXvWQ7WNM/w-d-xo.html

Always been a huge Bruce fan and my Uncle gave me his whole record collection back in the day because I wanted the Springsteen stuff. I discovered Joan Armatrading this way as she is forgotten by younger generations. Very underrated!
Put him in a nice old wooden pub and get him to sing a set. Then you will understand what his voice is all about. It's one of the most beautiful story telling voices ever, second to Bob Dylan of course, who also can't sing. I wish I could sing a story as bad as they can. Of course Bruce wrote the lyrics as well so it's comes deep from within his soul.
I love how at around 6:00 you are explaining how his voice has aged but it kinda still works for him and you're like "well he, he also looks so happy" and it really still works for him, i mean, he's The Boss
First you did my favorite bands such as Soundgarden/ Chris Cornell, Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Now you have done my favorite musician ever. His voice is not for everyone but I'm so happy you did a review. His late 70s/early 80s vocal style is my favorite era for his voice. Songs like I'm on Fire or Streets of Fire or Badlands are great examples of this era!
You pointed out how he lowers his larynx, he does that a lot throughout his career, especially on recent live performances as his voice has aged. But he’s actually quite versatile and has a few different “voices” he uses
One thing Bruce is really good at IMO are his long belting notes. He does sound like he's shouting a lot, but he's able to keep up their strength right until the end, and the shouting works for his style.
Totally unrelated to this, but I would LOVE to see your reaction to Fleetwood Mac “Rhiannon” live in 1976 on the midnight special. Stevie kills it and the band serve a remarkable performance.
Nice to see you take a look at Bruce. He does have a few songs he seems to shout more than sing, especially live (Seeds or Born ni the USA, for instance) but I do think he's unfairly derided for being a bad singer. His vocal style has changed hugely over time - he tries a lot of different things with the register that he has. He indicated in his autobiography that he always was very aware of musicians who had better voices than him (citing Rod Stewart and John Fogerty) and in the early days I suspect he may also have compared himself to local buddy Southside Johnny, who has a really great soul voice. At any rate, his 110% live drive comes in part from compensating for the fact that he simply can't sing like Roy Orbison or play guitar like Hendrix. Instead he wrote the best songs he could (and was selective about which of them to actually release) and he went above and beyond onstage for 1001 nights and more.
Bear in mind that DitD is always towards the end of a live set. There's no wonder he sounds a bit knackered, they've been on stage for 3 hours plus by this point!
Hi Beth, this song is one of my all times favorites, thank u for this reaction!!! Do you know Sam Fender???? He's a version quite similar to Bruce Springsteen, but young. He's pretty talented, deserves a reaction too 😉😉😉.
Enjoyed this! Very interesting! I was actually at this concert! Hard Rock Calling, 2013 at the Queen Elizabeth Park. Fantastic gig! Do have a question though, he performed this song around 2 hours into a highly energetic show, so would that have had an impact on his voice for this clip?
I don't know if you need to SEE the person performing the song to do these vids but I'd love to see you react to my hero Scott Walker. Perhaps the song "Montague Terrace (In Blue)" or "The Amorous Humphrey Plugg". The difficulty is, although he was a powerful singer, he did not enjoy actually performing and in fact did not perfom in front of a live audience since about 1975 so there are only a handful of videos of him actually performing, and none of them are really the songs I would choose to show to you
You previously reacted to The Hu Band. You should definitely check out Yat-Kha as well. A bit older band but i'm sure you will like it. They mixed metal with Tuvan throat singing. Kind of similar with Mongolian throat singing, but different at the same time. Dyngyldai would be a good choice of song. And i believe they also made a concert in London couple of years ago.
I'd love to hear your take on early and recent U2 performances. Bono's voice changed so much, it's like two different singers and I like them both for different reasons, I think it's really interesting.
your fellow Scot Amy MacDonald does a good version of this. (oops she did give a shout out for that at the end :) ) her Flower of Scotland renditions are awesome
I would like to see your reaction andy analyse of Gregory Porter ( "It's Probably Me" at the Polar Music Prize or "Hey Laura" Live At The Royal Albert Hall) Love your videos. Keep 'em coming!
Thank you Beth I love Bruce Springsteen and it would be great of you could react yo Paul McCartney, and from Argentina Carlos Gardel, Luis Alberto Spinetta or León Gieco too!! 👏👏👍
I’m pretty sure the only person in the world that I’d help cover up a murder for is Little Steven. Not that I’ll ever have to. Steven Van Zandt has essentially been radiating pure joy wherever he goes for well over 5 decades now. Easily in top 10 humans my home state of Massachusetts ever produced. ...maybe Macaulay Culkin. Not for any weird super fandom or anything. Seems like a cool interesting guy and all, but the world doesn’t need to know if Mac actually caught the murder bug after kicking Joe Pesci’s ass in Home Alone.
React to the hyde park concert version of Youngstown! they absolutely kill it! bruce sings his ass of,the drummer drums himself into a frenzy and the guitar solo by Lofgren in the end is iiiiinsaaanee!! :D
Hey Beth love your channel. Please check out a fellow Newfoundlander Cory Tetford. He has a TH-cam channel. I’d love to see your reaction to his version of Amazing Grace for Nova Scotia. He dedicated it to the families that lost their loved ones in a recent event of horrible shootings. Cory is a well known singer and song writer in Eastern Canada, he now plays with Alan Doyle formally of GREAT BIG SEA. :) love to see you showcase and react to some of his talented singing. Cheers!
I’ve been a huge Bruce fan since 1975 but I have never liked this song. It was one of first or second only written to be a top 40 hit, but his record label pushed him on this. Gotta mention he’s nearly 4 hours into this concert. Most vocalists would’ve expired long before this and 40 years of marathon shows and he hasn’t blown out his voice he’s a beast
Just the fact that he can still sing well after 50 years of 3-4 hour long shows is incredible.
My dad saw him and would always mention that fact of playing whole shows. Blew my mind thats a lot of endurance especially back in the day without ac haha
It happens when you take of yourself with a little exercise & abstaining from drugs.
Same. He's just The Boss.
I’ve got this dvd, it’s literally the last song in a nearly 4 hour set. This is exhausted boss and he’s that good
There were shows that were only 3 hours long? 😜

Everyone, do yourselves a favor and watch the second half of this performance. This is why he is the greatest live performer of all time.
Hello from New Jersey- thanks for this video🤙🏽
Thanks for sharing your joy!
Still amazes me that Bruce's guitar player, Steven Van Zandt, was Sil on The Sopranos. The man can do it all!
The E Street Band's third guitarist (third ffs) is Nils Lofgren. How many bands can claim that quality!

I think Bruce’s voice has got even better as he’s aged. I love his voice from The Rising onwards.
