Re: "Leashing" - I can explain why helping the jungler is called "leashing" - many patches ago, there was no aggro bar for mobs in jungle. Back then, players learned a new technique where you could juggle the mob aggro between 2 people by stepping in and out of leash range causing the mob to never have time to attack at all - which was pretty broken coz jungler would be full health lv2 ready to gank immediately. This new "leashing" method spread like fire, junglers started requesting "Can you please help me leash?" Then Riot was like "stop this" and reworked mob aggro so you can no longer do this, but the term for helping the jungler stuck with the community and is now a legacy artifact.
Except, leashing simply refers to the range that something can move before being tethered back to it's starting location...It's literally named after the concept of a dog leash, and the term has been around since before League of Legends existed. This is not a League of Legends term. It's been in use since they first added max leash ranges to WC3 in 2002. The term is completely indepenent from the technique of abusing it that you're referencing.
also back in the day, the midlaner used to leash for jungle. the reason was, that the mob will follow the first player, who attacked him. so midlane will attack the monster behind a wall before heading mid. the monster will now run around the wall before bouncing back to his spot, where he eventually attacked the jungler itself. note that at this time, monster HP didnt reset as it does now as long as someone keeps attacking. so the jungler was able to get a lot of free hits in before he takes dmg. this was also at a time, where junglemonsters where extremly dangerous for most lvl 1 champs, compared to today. so a lot of junglers actually needed this leash to make it through the whole jungle without a reset as well. eventually riot remade the jungle, both in monster lethality and how the leashing worked. this killed the leash from midlane but at the same time, most junglers where now able to clear their jungle without help. the only reason you still leash, is to give your jungler a small headstart, wich is still important for ganktimers or to arrive first at scuttle. obviously, the name "leashing" stayed, like with many other things, that changed over time. other examples are pinkward (control ward is red now while it used to be pink) or ninja tabis (who are now called steelcaps)

For everyone in chat and here in comments who needs to hear this: Mac won the LEC 3 times. He had a lot of high regular season placements. He does not need to know how many hits it takes to kill a pink ward or how many creeps you need for level 2 because the players he coaches are way past any of that already. He is not teaching them how to play their lane or how to play their micro. So many people criticized him for "not playing 10 years and it shows" but instead I really respect him for still having the drive to continue after all that time of not playing the game. He won titles while not even playing the game himself, that's impressive.
No one says he is a bad LEC coach. We are saying he is a bad new player coach. At this point a gold player would be a better coach. Grubby needs someone who can explain the basics, and tell him he needs to focus on finishing his support item.
@@morosov4595 Alois will do that, because unlike Mac, he is a soloqueue player and will explain all the stuff to him as a player, not a coach. Mac gave him insight about some strategic basics (well and some advanced ones too), not some basic level League mechanics.

Tbh even though im Grandmaster Peak (GM), i still learn a lot too. Although ive already been doing almost all of these things, most of the time its my instinct and I never thought the proper timing or some deep principle to what im doing. At some point i randomly throw lol. Going back to gaming after watching the coaching stream i actually win a lot more, atleast 9-1 since yesterday 😂 since things became more clear to me which makes me play more confident & consistent. So thanks. I Might as well try Challenger.
They literally explained that they do most of these things by instinct. It's the reason challenger streamers exist, they can talk to their community and play the game at the same time *because* their autopilot is at that level. @@Katafalk462
As a long time league player and also fan of yours, it's interesting to see your league growth because it's essentially backward to my experience where you are learning high level wave manipulations tactics before you even know what the championship do where it took me learning the entire roster before any of the other fundentals.
well, we had to learn this stuff either by playing the game or by watching vods of better players and trying to essentially reverse engineer the reasoning behind their decisions. it's wild to think how much of what's considered standard practice nowadays was seen as revolutionary at some point in the past. now is honestly a great time to be a new LoL player because of how many great learning resources are out there.
This coaching session is pretty meh. I feel like the coach should be the one in charge of the replay so he can show specifically what's happening and pause and fast forward and so on.
It's called "leashing" because way back jungle aggro worked differently, monsters wouldn't attack the closest target, but rather follow the first attacker until the end of aggro range, hence letting jungler get a lot of attacks in during this "leash".
I love this new series as someone who has been playing league for so long. He is also beast at dota. I saw them both on your stream. It would be fun as hell to watch you discussing league with league celebrities. Also I think its kinda overkill now, when you don't even know what most champions do.
37:00 fun fact: Leashing in the traditional sense used to exist in League of Legends as well. You could manipulate the jungle monster pathing by aggroing them and moving around in a certain way, while your jungler could hit it without taking damage, similar to Dota afaik. Riot eventually added more sophisticated AI to balance jungling better. But the term leashing stuck, even though now you are just helping your jungler by applying damage to the camp without doing any "real" leashing.

As much as its really nice that Mac took the time to help out with this coaching. I feel like he should have thought more about the fact that he is talking to someone completely new at the game. It seems like he was constantly trying to give you advice from challenger/pro level play. Completely disregarding the fact that from your gameplay you are most likely going to start your ranked journey somewhere around silver. Multiple of his analysis/advice was either completely useless information to you. Or actually harmful to your low elo ranked performance/usefulness. A few examples is the support item talk (AP poke vs Tank last hit item) The tank item will only benefit you slightly with not dying early on. and once you get around lvl 6 onward the AP from the AP item will be better in 99% of your games. Talking about sweeper lvl 1 (again this is completely useless in low elo, especially if youre playing support as your adc will never understand that you are trying to get a lvl 2 advantage. And will either push fast anyways, or last hit and enemy gets lvl 2 first.) Also warding deep enemy jungle is much more useful in high elo as low elo junglers are completely random. Yes in high elo a jungler will clear their bot side camps (Wolves, blue buff, gromp) before ganking. So you will spot him most of the time with a deep ward. But in low elo enemy jungler might walk around the river for 30sec. or even walk into enemy jungle randomly, and if he doesnt run into any of your allies, your deep ward is now completely useless. Also if you run into the enemy jungler while you are trying to place that deep ward you will either lose half your HP and have to flash away, or you will die in most cases. I appreciate Mac trying to help, but honestly alot of this info is not useful at all to someone who is starting from fresh in low elo.
Alois and Pobelter can teach him the soloQ side of things. Considering Grubby's background as an RTS player I think it's actually good for him to understand some of the higher level macro that drives "optimal" in-game decisions. Understanding wave and minion management is really big since it allows you to win both your lane and enable other lanes.
Honestly the main problem with this level of coaching is simply that all the strategies and timings and optimizations in pro play are based on the assumption that execution will be near perfect and small advantages will be properly snowballed into a victory. That simply isn't the case in solo-queue, even at relatively high ranks. Also, Grubby's DOTA/HOTS experience gives him the basics of farming, micro, and general strategy, which is plenty good to start out. What he needs most right now is a thorough explanation of some nitty-gritty league-specific things like vision, tower/minion aggro, dragon/baron buffs, runes, items, etc. After that, it's just a matter of learning what all the characters do.
I think grubby would do great as a shaco playe since he plays RTS which micros more than one unit. I think bard Sup is great for him. I think Teemo top an heimer mid would suit him too. then ADC would prbably be something like Ezreal because everyone loves ezreal
Tip for you and other beginners regarding harrassing under enemy towers: practice against bots (preferably alone/training) push the wave and start harassing while avoiding tower aggro. Listen to the tower aggro ping sound. Just remember that ‘diving’ for a kill on the bot is easy but diving players is a different story.

I think you should try Quinn top or mid. She is very OP at moving around the map especially with lvl 11 and lvl 16 when u upgrade your ultimate. For that reason you take ignite on her and don't need tp. You can fly around the map, cover waves and clean up fights with ease. Also she is good at killing squishy adc or mid when they solo split side lane which happens a lot in low elo. Quinn for me is the most fun champ in League.
Mac is a cool guy and a fantastic pro player coach and all but I don't think he was a good choice to coach you at this point. Especially for someone who hasn't played for ages himself and isn't teaching from a player perspective but rather top of the level pro player coach perspective. Pro play is quite a lot different to solo queue ranked, I think a big part of that actually is no voice comms maybe? I still feel grubby doesn't have a very basic baseline understanding of the game yet. Mac hasn't played for years and only specializes in pro team coaching. I personally cant wait for the future coaching sessions and when grubby is confident he understands all the basics and when he ventures into ranked for the first time it will be fun, but get ready for harder games (and maybe more toxicity in ranked). People do say that league is toxic but really I don't think it's that bad, they have actually removed some ways to be toxic recently (e.g. pinging another allied player on their portrait is no longer possible, its only possible when they get kills (to celebrate their play)) the only toxic thing they can do is question mark ping spam you or say you are bad in chat, if they say anything worse than that it might get censored and instantly chat banned or if you report it, they will most likely get chat banned if it wasn't automatic (riot is good and quick at chat banning ppl who be toxic). I haven't seen anyone say anything much bad in chat recently honestly though, question mark ping is commonly mis-used though and its up to you if you think thats toxic.
@@sandz000 But it isn't, DOTA has just more strategic elements. Doesn't make League "simple", that's the whole point, lol. League is just a completely different approach. If you watch high elo games as a low elo player, you probably don't understand what's going on. In high level play, you path wrong once, lose a few seconds and it can cost you a game. It's just not the case in Gold, cause people do whatever they want there without any clue. The only people who say League is simple are hardstuck low elo players, or people who never played League at a high level at least and think it's simpler because at their low monkey elo if the game is simple, then it is simple if you're playing vs actual humans with brain and hands too. DOTA in low elo is also easy if you're playing vs NPCs. (Been playing since DOTA 1, have some experience).
I mean... anyone who isnt disingenuous would be able to tell even by now. Grubby's 1st coaching game that stream was quite similar to his proceeded 1st solo one, adc was losing, and a jungler/top who was feeding. But with Mac's help, he was able to win the first one. And in the thresh game, he even started throwing himself. Mac's understanding of where he needs to be and what he needs to do, shows the depth of the game. I think the one flaw was that he didnt really explain to grubby how he came to those conclusions, which is fine cause itd be impossible to do so in 2 games.
If you're gonna get support coaching, get Coach Cupcake. Getting a pro coach for low ELO SoloQ is like getting John Madden to coach pickup street basketball, it just doesn't mesh.
No diss but a solo queue coach would have been better. Everyone in your team is a monkey that will drag you down 90% or carry you 10%. They aren't the same, isnt it the same for WC3? Two types of coaches.

Minion damage matters a lot early game. As a top laner it can win or lose u a solo fight. Let's say you have 3 creeps and enemy has 2 stacked waves. Early game creeps can outdamage the actual champion damage-
I mean this with no shade and utmost respect to Mac because he seems like a lovely person but…isn’t it a bit foreboding for the European league scene that the coach for one of the biggest teams hasn’t even played the game in years? I understand that competitive and solo queue are very different, but he didn’t know how many minions it took for level 2 and how many hits it was for a control ward. I wonder if the top Korean teams have coaches who don’t play. It’s very possible, I know Polt was involved with T1 for a long time and he barely played, but I think he was manager more than a coach. I dont think you need to play to understand the gane theoretically as long as you have played it on a high level before. If he had never played i agree with you though, but since (competitive) league is mostly about macro game and understanding composition dynamics its fine. It do agree though that it helps a lot with drafting comps if you as a coach understand the limits of champions and what your players can do with them. But like he said he closely observes his players solo queue so im sure he does. But most pro games at the higest level between 2 good teams are won through superior positioning and rotations. The times where mechnical outplays deside games are rarer which is why we get so hyped for them.

LoL has problem with describing staff roles imo, he shouldn't be described as a coach because he just works as a manager with staff behind him but now in Vitality he is "labeled" as a manager which finally is accurate for the work he actually do session with Pad who works under Mac would probably be much better because he is actual coach who works on pure gameplay more
don't worry league isn't as good as wc3. grubby has had a very unusually non-toxic and low smurf experience so far and his first game ever was like a fairy tale league game. grubby hasn't even seen 10% of how toxic the community and how snowballing the game can get. the only people that main league don't know any better.

Ive played dota since 6.21b (Dota 1) and played for 10+ years on and off between WoW xpacs getting a humble peak of 4.6k mmr in Dota 2 as a hard carry main (PA, Anti-Mage, Weaver, etc) and I moved on to league because learning a new game was fun. Nowadays I legit prefer League than Dota because the game is more fun for me and much much much much more well supported with a bigger community, frequent updates and a more active and dynamic competitive scene. While Dota has its unique gameplay going for it, League developed their own twist to what Dota started which in my opinion is more ruthless and competitive than Dota in the gameplay aspect. League didnt kill their competitors out of luck or "people not knowing better". People legit prefer it

I am generally against the idea of coaching in video games, and here is no exception. Guy didn 't teach you at all how to use your champs, and most of the information he gave is completely useless in solo/duo. What he said is useful when you have humans in your team. I am emerald and still most of the times I have animals. And my rank is top 6%. So until you reach master, you can 't really apply what he was teaching. One friendly advice is to play top or jg, because are the most dominant roles. You can 't rely to your team.
I agree to a degree, because true, in low elo those things are not applicable, but on the other hand he will still have this knowledge in the opposite to probably close to a 100% of lower elo players :D

It's called "leashing" because way back jungle aggro worked differently, monsters wouldn't attack the closest target, but rather follow the first attacker until the end of aggro range, hence letting jungler get a lot of attacks in during this "leash".
I love this new series as someone who has been playing league for so long. I think one thing that could make this series longer is when picking a new champion to play watching the TH-camr Vars and his series on”why no one plays x champion” and “why everyone plays” as well as “everything wrong with”❤

37:00 fun fact: Leashing in the traditional sense used to exist in League of Legends as well. You could manipulate the jungle monster pathing by aggroing them and moving around in a certain way, while your jungler could hit it without taking damage, similar to Dota afaik.
Riot eventually added more sophisticated AI to balance jungling better. But the term leashing stuck, even though now you are just helping your jungler by applying damage to the camp without doing any "real" leashing.
Finally i have a way of figuring out whats happening in all the different MoBas from scratch so i can keep up with all the cool animes

But his overall game knowledge is impeccable, minus some honestly minor nitty gritty, and as he explained he is able to take time to process plays one by one. Even if he can't see what's happening as rapidly as regular players, his logic is absolutely on fire after he takes whatever time he needed to make the review. He has an excellent analytical mind, thank you for sharing this valuable coaching.

As much as its really nice that Mac took the time to help out with this coaching. I feel like he should have thought more about the fact that he is talking to someone completely new at the game. It seems like he was constantly trying to give you advice from challenger/pro level play. Completely disregarding the fact that from your gameplay you are most likely going to start your ranked journey somewhere around silver. Multiple of his analysis/advice was either completely useless information to you. Or actually harmful to your low elo ranked performance/usefulness. A few examples is the support item talk (AP poke vs Tank last hit item) The tank item will only benefit you slightly with not dying early on. and once you get around lvl 6 onward the AP from the AP item will be better in 99% of your games. Talking about sweeper lvl 1 (again this is completely useless in low elo, especially if youre playing support as your adc will never understand that you are trying to get a lvl 2 advantage. And will either push fast anyways, or last hit and enemy gets lvl 2 first.) Also warding deep enemy jungle is much more useful in high elo as low elo junglers are completely random. Yes in high elo a jungler will clear their bot side camps (Wolves, blue buff, gromp) before ganking. So you will spot him most of the time with a deep ward. But in low elo enemy jungler might walk around the river for 30sec. or even walk into enemy jungle randomly, and if he doesnt run into any of your allies, your deep ward is now completely useless. Also if you run into the enemy jungler while you are trying to place that deep ward you will either lose half your HP and have to flash away, or you will die in most cases.
I appreciate Mac trying to help, but honestly alot of this info is not useful at all to someone who is starting from fresh in low elo.
Alois and Pobelter can teach him the soloQ side of things. Considering Grubby's background as an RTS player I think it's actually good for him to understand some of the higher level macro that drives "optimal" in-game decisions. Understanding wave and minion management is really big since it allows you to win both your lane and enable other lanes.
Honestly the main problem with this level of coaching is simply that all the strategies and timings and optimizations in pro play are based on the assumption that execution will be near perfect and small advantages will be properly snowballed into a victory. That simply isn't the case in solo-queue, even at relatively high ranks. Also, Grubby's DOTA/HOTS experience gives him the basics of farming, micro, and general strategy, which is plenty good to start out. What he needs most right now is a thorough explanation of some nitty-gritty league-specific things like vision, tower/minion aggro, dragon/baron buffs, runes, items, etc. After that, it's just a matter of learning what all the characters do.

Tip for you and other beginners regarding harrassing under enemy towers: practice against bots (preferably alone/training) push the wave and start harassing while avoiding tower aggro. Listen to the tower aggro ping sound.
Just remember that ‘diving’ for a kill on the bot is easy but diving players is a different story.

I think you should try Quinn top or mid. She is very OP at moving around the map especially with lvl 11 and lvl 16 when u upgrade your ultimate. For that reason you take ignite on her and don't need tp. You can fly around the map, cover waves and clean up fights with ease. Also she is good at killing squishy adc or mid when they solo split side lane which happens a lot in low elo. Quinn for me is the most fun champ in League.

Mac is a cool guy and a fantastic pro player coach and all but I don't think he was a good choice to coach you at this point. Especially for someone who hasn't played for ages himself and isn't teaching from a player perspective but rather top of the level pro player coach perspective. Pro play is quite a lot different to solo queue ranked, I think a big part of that actually is no voice comms maybe? I still feel grubby doesn't have a very basic baseline understanding of the game yet. Mac hasn't played for years and only specializes in pro team coaching. I personally cant wait for the future coaching sessions and when grubby is confident he understands all the basics and when he ventures into ranked for the first time it will be fun, but get ready for harder games (and maybe more toxicity in ranked).
People do say that league is toxic but really I don't think it's that bad, they have actually removed some ways to be toxic recently (e.g. pinging another allied player on their portrait is no longer possible, its only possible when they get kills (to celebrate their play)) the only toxic thing they can do is question mark ping spam you or say you are bad in chat, if they say anything worse than that it might get censored and instantly chat banned or if you report it, they will most likely get chat banned if it wasn't automatic (riot is good and quick at chat banning ppl who be toxic). I haven't seen anyone say anything much bad in chat recently honestly though, question mark ping is commonly mis-used though and its up to you if you think thats toxic.

@@sandz000 But it isn't, DOTA has just more strategic elements. Doesn't make League "simple", that's the whole point, lol. League is just a completely different approach. If you watch high elo games as a low elo player, you probably don't understand what's going on. In high level play, you path wrong once, lose a few seconds and it can cost you a game. It's just not the case in Gold, cause people do whatever they want there without any clue.
The only people who say League is simple are hardstuck low elo players, or people who never played League at a high level at least and think it's simpler because at their low monkey elo if the game is simple, then it is simple if you're playing vs actual humans with brain and hands too. DOTA in low elo is also easy if you're playing vs NPCs. (Been playing since DOTA 1, have some experience).
I mean... anyone who isnt disingenuous would be able to tell even by now. Grubby's 1st coaching game that stream was quite similar to his proceeded 1st solo one, adc was losing, and a jungler/top who was feeding. But with Mac's help, he was able to win the first one. And in the thresh game, he even started throwing himself. Mac's understanding of where he needs to be and what he needs to do, shows the depth of the game. I think the one flaw was that he didnt really explain to grubby how he came to those conclusions, which is fine cause itd be impossible to do so in 2 games.
If you're gonna get support coaching, get Coach Cupcake. Getting a pro coach for low ELO SoloQ is like getting John Madden to coach pickup street basketball, it just doesn't mesh.
No diss but a solo queue coach would have been better. Everyone in your team is a monkey that will drag you down 90% or carry you 10%. They aren't the same, isnt it the same for WC3? Two types of coaches.

Minion damage matters a lot early game. As a top laner it can win or lose u a solo fight. Let's say you have 3 creeps and enemy has 2 stacked waves. Early game creeps can outdamage the actual champion damage-

I mean this with no shade and utmost respect to Mac because he seems like a lovely person but…isn’t it a bit foreboding for the European league scene that the coach for one of the biggest teams hasn’t even played the game in years? I understand that competitive and solo queue are very different, but he didn’t know how many minions it took for level 2 and how many hits it was for a control ward. I wonder if the top Korean teams have coaches who don’t play. It’s very possible, I know Polt was involved with T1 for a long time and he barely played, but I think he was manager more than a coach. Either way great video!
I dont think you need to play to understand the gane theoretically as long as you have played it on a high level before. If he had never played i agree with you though, but since (competitive) league is mostly about macro game and understanding composition dynamics its fine. It do agree though that it helps a lot with drafting comps if you as a coach understand the limits of champions and what your players can do with them. But like he said he closely observes his players solo queue so im sure he does. But most pro games at the higest level between 2 good teams are won through superior positioning and rotations. The times where mechnical outplays deside games are rarer which is why we get so hyped for them.

Ive played dota since 6.21b (Dota 1) and played for 10+ years on and off between WoW xpacs getting a humble peak of 4.6k mmr in Dota 2 as a hard carry main (PA, Anti-Mage, Weaver, etc) and I moved on to league because learning a new game was fun. Nowadays I legit prefer League than Dota because the game is more fun for me and much much much much more well supported with a bigger community, frequent updates and a more active and dynamic competitive scene. While Dota has its unique gameplay going for it, League developed their own twist to what Dota started which in my opinion is more ruthless and competitive than Dota in the gameplay aspect. League didnt kill their competitors out of luck or "people not knowing better". People legit prefer it

I am generally against the idea of coaching in video games, and here is no exception. Guy didn 't teach you at all how to use your champs, and most of the information he gave is completely useless in solo/duo. What he said is useful when you have humans in your team. I am emerald and still most of the times I have animals. And my rank is top 6%. So until you reach master, you can 't really apply what he was teaching. One friendly advice is to play top or jg, because are the most dominant roles. You can 't rely to your team.
I agree to a degree, because true, in low elo those things are not applicable, but on the other hand he will still have this knowledge in the opposite to probably close to a 100% of lower elo players :D
But this coach is spitting bs... sorry but how can HEAD COACH say something like "you get lvl 2 after 8 minions on bot"?! It's 9, and it's not "some random" 6 melee and 3 ranged...
