  • Independence Mine is an abandoned gold mine that sits on top of Hatcher's Pass within The Talkeetna Mountains. It owes the rugged landscape to tectonic activity along the Castle Mountain Fault. The mine is located within 761 acres of a Park that includes multi-use trails for winter and summer activities. There is a visitor center in the old Mine Manager's house which include interpretive exhibits. Hardtack trail takes you past restored historic buildings that include a timber shed, collapsed mill, warehouse, mess halls and a bunkhouse. The Assay Office is now a museum with displays focused on mining.
