    Thank you for all these tremendous videos. We are running a bike co-op in Svendborg, Denmark, where we fix up old bicycles together with people who want a new (old) bike. Loads of old frames are donated to us, steel and aluminium. We want to start at metal shop in our workshop so that we can begin customizing frames and perhaps even building new frames at some point (currently funding and hope to be able to buy some of your tools!). We get a lot of aluminium frames as well, so it would be nice with a tig-welder that can do steel and alu. Could you by any chance recommend a specific type?

    Just recently got the itch to try my hand at frame building. I can mig weld (can't everyone? Lol) and I'm looking around for decent used Tig setups. I somehow discovered your channel and I enjoy all the information you share!

    Definitely get a speedglas it will change your life. I find that it’s so clear that I don’t even lift my hood sometimes between welds.
    Love the videos man

      I bet Speedglas makes a nice hood, but for this kind of work I love my passive hood so much.

      Auto darkening is great, but I experienced failure of the shield one time -- had to spend a week wearing sunglasses indoors ...

    You could go to a welding shop sometimes they distribute gas, they might be able to sell you bigger bottles

    Great vid! I’m also curious about the Tig setting. Amps, freq, manual?... thanks!

      I am definitely going to cover that in future videos. I usually use pulse for steel.

    Great vid! What size filler rod are you using?

  • @kevancote

    Why do you use stainless filler rod instead of a mild steel filler for the 4140? Is it more the way it feels as you dip and work with it or are there strength implications?

      You know, I have to admit it's mostly because a lot of other framebuilders do it. That's not a very good reason, haha. I know a little bit about welding bikes from doing it, but I really don't know a lot about the metallurgy or chemistry etc. Other framebuilders who seem to know what they are doing and have been building bikes and welding them for a while seems to generally like it and as a beginner that was enough for me to give it a shot and I haven't felt the need to explore further, but it would be a worthy pursuit. Check out the welding tips and tricks youtube video where Jody welds up a bike frame. He uses tubing and filler supplied by Mike Zanconato and he does some of it with 880t and he makes some remarks about the filler. Jody knows a lot more about welding than I do!

      @@cobraframebuilding All good! Building frames seems more about the feel than anything. Really enjoying the content

    There are cheaper gas options for back purging.

    • @cobraframebuilding
      @cobraframebuilding  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheaper than a second regulator and all the fittings or do you mean cheaper than the expanding heat sinks? I primarily use the heat sinks to make welding go more smoothly and I don't always back purge with them. The regulator I bought is pretty cheap, so IDK my setup might not be the absolute cheapest, but it's really not that expensive either. If you're serious about making great bikes I think it's pretty reasonable to invest a hundred dollars in backpurge stuff.

    how long before you guys figured out how annoying the constantly moving zoom camera style was?
