Any fellow OCD people out there obsessing over those factory stickers still on the drawers in the background? Stickers that come off easy and leave no residue are one of life's great pleasures. I know those particular ones come off easy and leave no hard to remove residue. Great video!
You may want to get yourself a few bottles of sticker remover; they're like a quid a piece if I remember correctly, or perhaps even cheaper. If you remove lots of stickers, get yourself a big bottle of orange terpenes instead. Orange terpenes are mainly limonene, which is the main ingredient in sticker removal fluid.
@@robc8468 Nobody mentioned complaining. Well, besides you. But you were able to get your invalid viewpoint inserted, and some name calling involved...so you've achieved your life's goal for the day.
When connected to your DSO with coax there was no 50 ohm terminator. There will be reflections on the coax that maybe the source of the jitter as the DSO triggers on a reflection pulse rather than the actual pulse. Please repeat with a 50 ohm termination at the DSO and look at the leading edge and trailing edges of the square wave for it's risetime and falltime. Still looks a great product. Good video review too.
One of these days I’m going to have to buy a function generator cause I’m running up against projects where building something on a breadboard will just not cut it. This one looks like a decent candidate, great video Paul. Looking forward to seeing what the mystery project will be, maybe it will be the solution to my problems.
Great budget Function Generator. I purchased the FeelTech dual channel function generator from Banggood you reviewed and it's a great value saves space too.Keep up the good work.
Other than generating function displays on an Oscilloscope exactly what is the purpose of a signal generator? Why would someone need to use this? Also why would someone need a 60mhz verses a 15mhz generator for example? Newbie here just starting out.
Would that work to do in alignment on a CB radio I just put new capacitors in this walkie-talkie and I can tell it needs an alignment would something like that work
Hey I just heard your chatter and thought I'd ask if there are any local groups to get involved with. I'm new to the hobby and would appreciate any resources I can get.
Yes sir. Just south of Richmond. I've had ears on for a while but that was one of the few rx I've had that clear. Must be near by. Sorry if that was a little weird to find you like this but I don't anyone interested and it's so cool! Not sure if there's any active clubs but a field day would be amazing! Thanks.
a frequency/clock genarator, with a large range, but that only output square waves is more or less usefull than a signal genarator that output in a much lower frequency range but have options to the wave form ?
Nice option. I've been looking at the FY6900 for a little bit more money but that one goes to 20-100 MHz. Problem is that it's mains powered and the PSU is.. well, cheap Chinese. This one seems to be powered by a 12V plug pack or something like that so no problems with wonky power supplies?
I have the FeelTech Fy6900 60Mhz and it is awesome at only $90. There are cheaper models from FeelTech that costs about the same as the one you bough and has 2 channels. That one is also available with up to 100Mhz. They changed to a FPGA for the 6900 though so it maxes at 60Mhz but is more reliable. They recently made a new model that costs a lot more and trades the counter for a 3rd channel which is not worth it. It is really just the 6300 with a slightly different case.
That is a cool generator. I also notice the OptoElectronics 7010 frequency counter on top of the drawers. I have one that I bought brand new in 1980. I fried the input with too much DC input.
At the @6:15 time mark it was showing the jitter , ok I will agree with you on what it looked like on your scope , BUT I think you used a BNC - BNC connector that came with the unit...... If that is the case , then try a quality RG-316 type cable , I can almost bet ya that anomaly goes away.... I have seen it quite a few times.... I use those supplied cables for probes in signal tracers and DIY projects , I just cut one end off and that goes inside my project boxes or probe tubes .....Have a good one Mon Ami.

Thanks for the video. Trouble I find is that this 'affordable' Chinese test gear works great for a while, then packs up after a few months light use! I'm minded to think it's a false economy and better stick to the more expensive, recognised makes.
I think you make a very good point about what you need, generally if you need the high end gear you already know you need the high end gear whereas a beginner will have plenty of options with a cheap function generator which could be used to clock circuitry or test RC filter response etc. Personally I have the rigol dg822 at home and it covers all my personal electronics needs.
Good catch Barry! What I also noticed with it being not terminated the voltage should have been much higher which suggest to me that the generators output impedance is much much higher than 50 ohms ??? TNX for the upload and a peek inside ! 73 N8AUM
My apologies if you’ve mentioned it in the video I haven’t watch the whole thing yet but I’m in the middle of some work and if I get distracted I wanted to be sure to get my comment. If you haven’t tried the feeltech 60 MHz full function generators… They’re pretty great in my opinion. I’m not as experienced as you are, but I do have a lot of precision gear by HP and Techtronics… A lot of which is too fancy for me to use. And I definitely couldn’t afford the stuff… But spent a few years looking and I got lucky and bought most of it untested or not working and replaced a few bad caps. Or a few small problems like that. That was the only way I could afford nicer gear. But I’ve been second-guessing that decision because there are a lot of very nice cheap pieces of test you’re coming out of China. when I saw those feeltech 60 MHz function generators… Especially the newer version… I had to jump on it. I’ve been happy with it! Especially for under $100 like Banggood puts them on sale and so do others from time to time! There are several very long forum posts on Eevblog discussing a few isolation problems and such but it seems they fixed quite a bit in the later generations. Love your channel as always! And anyone who says anything about your hands can go stuff it up their ass. It’s crap you have to put that in the description.... because of jerks prowling around the Internet. Everyone thinks they’re a professional with nothing else to learn… Shit man.... it’s much easier going through life realizing that we don’t know everything, and it’s awesome to learn stuff. The most important thing I’ve learned is that the phrase “I don’t know“ is such a freeing thing to say, And opens up a world of learning and possibilities!
learnelectronics oh my apologies I’ll have to look through your videos again and check out those reviews. It looks like your GW-Instek (analog function generator) is a model 8020, right? If so, the digits on the display are _recovered_ by the generator, not used to _generate_ the signal. (This is well described in the manual and accompanying schematic). The display isn’t all that accurate. Based on my experience with that and other, similar GW-I models, my guess is that the cheap-o instrument you’re testing is hugely _more_ accurate as a frequency counter than the generator’s display. The thing that ultimately drove me to replace all of our analog function generators with DDS ones was the unacceptable frequency drift over temperature - up to a few percent. This is especially problematic as the instrument warms up over an hour sr so and/or ambient, as, for instance, when the sun passes the nearest window during the day. Assuming your DDS generator has a crystal oscillator for its MCU, that drift would be several decimal places out - making it a non-issue. On the other hand, the jitter you observed at the frequency limit will, most likely, always be worse with a digital instrument. Well, that, and the specs are often rather optimistic. Nice review. The 50 ohm termination thing can sneak up on all of us at one time or another. I believe the word you were looking for is ‘bandwidth’. If you make another video, your viewers might find that an interesting topic unto itself. Cheers.
You'd need one more, if you're emulating/working with 3-phased systems :ø) Gotta love the drop in prices on equipment, hopefully it will be fully servicable if/when it breaks in the future.
why does it say 2Mhz version and 5MHz? whats the diffrence? because i want a frequency between 10 to 100 on my rf antenna? can i do it with this device? sorry for my bad english but i need to submit this project to my physics teacher before end of semester
This is at a price point where the cost of getting into the UK will be half the cost of it. by the time you've added input duty, vat, and then the post office fee for taking the tax from you. you might was well buy a more expensive one in the long run.
A little off topic, I am interested in buying this signal generator but have never used Aliexpress since they do not take pay pal. Has anyone had any trouble using a regular USA based Visa credit card on an Aliexpress purchase, is it safe????
There's a "swp" button right on the front panel, so I would assume it does. Problem I've had with the FeelTech variants is that they (as far as I can tell) don't provide a ramp out sync'ed with the sweep, so that you can show the frequency response of a circuit with x/y mode on your scope. They do have a VCO input line, though, so you can use a second function generator to generate a sawtooth or triangle wave to drive both the signal generator and the scope.
