Cell shading doesn't really work outside of 2D surfaces because it has to be controlled too much. If you look at it from the wrong angle or you have light at a different angle it destroys the effect. The closest miniature effect is black lining which uses very dark lines between parts to seperate them.
At 05:00 - you mention that you go over and correct any mistakes using Corax White paint. Is that correct? Wouldn't Corax White be too light to correct mistakes over the Apothecary White contrast paint base? I was testing out this method today, and after trying to correct mistakes, I've been left with a lot of blotchy areas of grey/white - makes the model look dirty, as opposed to the clean results you get in yours. Just wondering what I'm doing wrong.
Didn't I says I used Ulthuan Grey? I used Ulthuan grey not Corax White. Ulthuan is a bit light still, but not so much. Again, not perfect, that's the problem with Contrast, correcting mistakes is a pain.

Just discovered your channel and I'm already a huge fan! Your White Scars technique has saved my High Elf project big time! Just two questions: Do you thin your paints/contrast paints with any mediums? What brushes do you use?
Thanks mate! If nothing is stated then the contrast paints are straight form the pot. Regarding regular paints, yes, of course you have to thin them down. I use a lot of different brands of brushes, but right now Rosemary and Co Series 33 are my favourite
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures thanks buddy, I always thin my paints don't worry but I've always just used water. Wondered if you used GW Lam medium or something else and if you'd recommend them. Really cool painting tutorial mate and is the corax white paint use as a undercoat or use a different undercoat paint for the contrast paint. Really cool video mate 😎👍
As it's shown, Corax white is used as the Basecoat for the contrast paint, what I do is give a quick layer of the base paint version on top of the spray to unify

It would be sweet if you got away from Space Marines for a while and hit up some other 40k races like Eldar, Orks, Tau and such. But great job thus far.
I like the chestnut ink bolter case bottle. I'm wondering if a grey wash would do the job as well as contrast does here. Is there anything specific about contrast which makes this possible or is it just what you had on hand?
Contrast has a very curious property as it shrinks a lot when drying, pulling itself from the edges and rised surfaces, it's silky smooth and doesn't do anything weird when it deies like a regular wash can do. It really is a great tool. You could get a similar result with a regular wash but it won't get a smooth result as this does.
I don't like doing freehand over Contrast paints, due to how you paint with them it's very hard to correct things and corrections are an integral part of freehand. I will use transfers with them if I manage to get my hand on some. I will make a video on freehand though, but don't know when 😂
I’ve been struggling to know how thickly to apply the Contrast paints. I now see that you’re putting it on pretty thick, almost like a brush loaded for a wash, but you’re also spending some time pushing pigment around before you’re done. Interesting. I need practice and lots of it.
I'd kill for brush control like you have on those eyes, they look fantastic, but my hand just isnt steady enough, or maybe i need painting magnifying glasses or something
Beautiful result, this was a great video! Subbed! I’m curious (if you don’t mind sharing) - what are you using to film the painting segment? It’s very nice quality footage.
Thanks! I'm a long time subscriber of your channel! I use a Sony XH300 bridge camera. It's a quite affordable but still nice camera with nice optics and you don't need extra lenses or anything.

I was thinking of following this for the old Juan Diaz daemonettes - got about 100 of them to paint. Would this be a good guide to follow to get that pale alabaster flesh tone?
Mmm, if you want a cold white Skintone, YES for sure. If you want a bit of warmth I will do this: - Basecoat of Cora White - Layer a mix of: 1 Part Skeleton Horde, 1 Part Guilliman Flesh and 2 parts Contrast Medium - do a deeper shadow if needed using 1 Part Skeleton Horde and 1 Part Guilliman Flesh with no medium - edge highlight with White Hope that helps!
@@paulschindler3543 I use mainly Raphael 8404 sizes 1 and 0. In this video I also use an Artis Opus size 1 to apply the contrast in the smaller details, not for the armour and the metallics Highlights. I don't like it for Highlights though, the point is not as good. The only reason I don't use my Raphael's here is to maintain their working life longer.
What size brushes do you recommend from the 8404 series? I am looking to get some real nice high quality brushes now that I am more used to the current ones I have.
hello! so i bought the daler rowney white ink. It is extremely thin out of the pot. I can't really control it for highlights since it is flowing like a wash. Is it a bad bottle or is that just how the paint is?
Shake it very well, there is a lot of residue on the bottom. Once thoroughly mixed don't have a lot in the brush, if you load the brush too much it will go everywhere. Less is more
Thanks! I've been painting with inks extensively for a long time so the Contrast Paints come very natural to me. They are like inks but much more forgiving and controllable.
JuanHidalgo Miniatures I'm up to the eye lenses now. Dude that's intense. Was that 7 colours for a lenses? I'm struggling to keep 1 colour inside that tiny space let alone 7 smaller and smaller paint spots. That dot inside a dot was next level.

Hi! this is pretty amazing! Now I know how I'll paint my starter set. I have a question though, I want to replace the red parts with blue instead. Do you have any tutorials where you paint with similar steps but using blue? or do you have any suggestions as to what colors you would list for each step if I wanted to paint blue instead? Also, what brush do you use for layering? it looks really good and precise. Thanks!
Hi! Yes I have a couple of tops on blue, I'm doing a tutorial on Ultramarines but it's going to be the last one of the 9 loyalist legions for dramatic reasons. I would just do them like the eye lenses myself. Talassar Blue all over, Ultramarine in the recesses and Highlights with Temple Guard Blue, Baharroth blue and Blue Horror. Hope that helps!
I will only do the 9 original loyalist Legions for now sorry. I need to stop at some point and that seemed like a good one. I love painting marines but I don't want to just do marines
Great looking min but GW must love you! Why not mix colors? It must take forever opening and closing over 20 pots of colors. I'm trying to move away from the GW pot for everything approach though, I don't think its effective in terms of time. There's an Italian mini painter called Marco and he mixes all of his colours from about a base of 12. According to Marco the way GW wants you to paint is using a pre reneissance model of separate dyes and inks for everything!
Thanks! First of all I don't use the pots, those are terrible, I have everything transferred to droppers. I know how to mix, if I find a true Magenta, Cyan and Yellow, black and white I can make you almost any colour. I was taught that and had to do it a lot. Been there, done that. The truth is I don't like it, I'm lazy. I work hard and love buying paints 😂, so many paints... 😂 Apart from my laziness, it's a matter of consistency, I KNOW that if I grab a bottle of a certain paint it's going to be 100% the colour I want, no mixing, no testing to see if the tone matches, just shake, open, squeeze and I'm done. I know exactly how it's going to dry, I know if I need a little bit to retouch in say 10 days or a month because it chipped or I messed up I can grab it again and it's still going to be the same. I understand Marco's and others way of doing things, it makes sense. It's the true artist's way of doing things. It's also not for me, I'm a bit of a mixed bag, I studied art but I'm also an engineer, they are two parts of myself that somehow mix into a weird combo. I like art and I like artistic expression but I also like an organized and predictable system to use for that, it's important for me. Also I'm VERY lazy. Again, thanks for watching and for reading the wall of text I've just posted. If you reached this far you have earned yourself a kiss 😘💋❤️

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures I'm using grey seer as a base. I'm able to make it more white after a glaze of Ultuan grey but it just seems really grey when I start painting
@@BL_Lusha yeah, Grey Seer is WAY too dark. You need to start with Corax White as a Basecoat, that's as dark as you can do to make it look good. I always do Corax White for my whites
If you make the white Highlight too wide try covering the mistake using Ulthuan Grey or a mix of Ulthuan Grey with a bit (very little) amount of a darker grey if it stands too much. An alternative could also be using the Apothecary White to cover it up just as a regular paint with a fine brush to paint over the slips and just that. Hope that helps!
Thank you very much for the reply. I have tried to cover up mistakes with contrast paint before, but the result didn't show after some layers, and the color just was way off on both sides then. Never thought about mixing ultuan Grey with a little darker tone to match the contrast color!
@UC5mIN9NVtsv4diBULt_ZcLQ yes Ulthuan is what I used to cover the parts where the Contrast dried up weird as you can see in the video. It is a bit lighter but if you add a touch of a darker colour it will match up pretty well I think. It's my pleasure. I just thought people that adopted contrast paints would appreciate a video showing how they can use the tools they already have to achieve a very good result. I was also tired of people claiming Contrast Paints were rubbish, you know it's easier to blame the tools
I did the radar displays on the inside of my rhino/razorback yesterday using the similar green paints but not the white then yellow base e.g. on top of leadbelcher (yuck !, it's only the inside of the vehicle though) I used Caliban Green, Warpstone Green and Moot Green for the on screen visuals such as radar circles and flow line and targets and text. I didn't use the glaze with the dark angels green also. You skipped to the part where his bolter was edge highlighted., I have problems edge highlighting the underside of the bolter (you know with Eshrin and also Administratum Grey lthin ines), the black grill on the underside on the bolter is a pain, I can only do it via subtractive highlighting i.e. adding black over the grey.
Yeah don't be ashamed of doing a massive grey like and painting the inside of that line black, I do that all the time. Contrast over metallics looks great imo, sounds like a cool display

Thanks for the idea. I will probably do a short video Darren Latham style, one leg at a time. It's a very interesting colour scheme
Are you using a wet pallet for contrasts? Do you know how a wet pallet effects contrast paint, or if you mix contrast with medium how a wet pallet will effect the paint?
I don't use a wet palette for contrast no. Not for regular use at least.
The only time ibuse it is when I'm making a glaze with them, fpr regular use I have my dry palette

Just discovered your channel and I'm already a huge fan! Your White Scars technique has saved my High Elf project big time! Just two questions:
Do you thin your paints/contrast paints with any mediums?
What brushes do you use?
Thanks mate! If nothing is stated then the contrast paints are straight form the pot.
Regarding regular paints, yes, of course you have to thin them down.
I use a lot of different brands of brushes, but right now Rosemary and Co Series 33 are my favourite
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures thanks buddy, I always thin my paints don't worry but I've always just used water. Wondered if you used GW Lam medium or something else and if you'd recommend them. Just watching your white video about the Daler Rowney stuff. Totally agree White Scar is god awful! Thought it was just me!
I use Lahmian sometimes when I make glazes if I want to be sure that it's extremely smooth
Is there a chance for a video about painting Sons of the Phoenix using your method?
No sorry, no more marines. I don't want to go down the rabbit hole that is successor chapters.
Ah ok and thanks for replying to my questions mate 😎👍
Happy to help! Thanks for watching!
Yep that’s cool and your very welcome mate 😎👍
Loving how you're taking contrast paints up a notch, I have seen a heap of videos on table top ready contrast painted figures, it's great to see you use more advanced techniques with them. BTW I am in awe of your brush control! I also like the brush you are using, nice fine resilient point and good deep belly. What type of brush are you using in this video? Do you have any you would recommend?
Thanks! I thought that people might like to see some videos of what can be done with the paints if you put a little bit of effort into them.
The brushes I use are Raphael 8404 sizes 1 and 0, those are my main brushes for fine detail. Here I also used an Artis Opus size 1 to do the metallics and apply the contrast to the smaller details, it's a brush I use when I don't what to use the nicer ones.

Will thinning down the Apothecary White make the model overall brighter/less grey?
Of course! Mixing Contrast Medium in will definitely make it less opaque and thus show more of the white undercoat.
JuanHidalgo Miniatures Thank you! Maybe I’ll try 1:1 for my attempt on white armour.
@@NotMyGoogleID I think 1:1 is pretty much the ideal mix. If you find it too light try 2:1 mix of Paint and Medium

It would be sweet if you got away from Space Marines for a while and hit up some other 40k races like Eldar, Orks, Tau and such. But great job thus far.
In fact I'm completely finished with Marines, Eldar are coming next week
I like the chestnut ink bolter case bottle.
I'm wondering if a grey wash would do the job as well as contrast does here. Is there anything specific about contrast which makes this possible or is it just what you had on hand?
Contrast has a very curious property as it shrinks a lot when drying, pulling itself from the edges and rised surfaces, it's silky smooth and doesn't do anything weird when it deies like a regular wash can do. It really is a great tool.
You could get a similar result with a regular wash but it won't get a smooth result as this does.
A great video, very informative and that marine looks very nice. Next step freehands? :-)
Yes! You kind of need to work the paint on the model, it's a completely different way of painting.
I'd kill for brush control like you have on those eyes, they look fantastic, but my hand just isnt steady enough, or maybe i need painting magnifying glasses or something
I use magnification myself, it helps quite a lot
Would love to see you start doing eavy contrast character models like Guilliman or Gahzkull or... The Silent King 😉
That won't happen sorry. First they are too big, I hate painting large models, second they would take too long to paint for a video.
Amazing! What's your recipe for the white glaze?
What do you mean? The glaze used in the rounded parts to make the highlights? White Ink and water

I was thinking of following this for the old Juan Diaz daemonettes - got about 100 of them to paint. Would this be a good guide to follow to get that pale alabaster flesh tone?
Mmm, if you want a cold white Skintone, YES for sure. If you want a bit of warmth I will do this:
- Basecoat of Cora White
- Layer a mix of: 1 Part Skeleton Horde, 1 Part Guilliman Flesh and 2 parts Contrast Medium
- do a deeper shadow if needed using 1 Part Skeleton Horde and 1 Part Guilliman Flesh with no medium
- edge highlight with White
Hope that helps!

JuanHidalgo Miniatures quick question. What brushes do you use? They always have the sharpest points in your videos!
Bello! Nice work boss! I like so much! Respect from italy!

What size brushes do you recommend from the 8404 series? I am looking to get some real nice high quality brushes now that I am more used to the current ones I have.
For Raphael 0, 1 and 2

hello! so i bought the daler rowney white ink.
Less is more
That smooth coat on the armour.
You figured contrast paints out
@@uglyduckling81 thank you! I've been pushing the limits on what I can do in small spaces. You can check the eyes on the next marine in the community tab of the channel later. Sadly not in the next video as it's almost impossible to record.

Hi! this is pretty amazing!
Dark angels one please! And one for space wolves!
Every original Legion is coming!
It seems like you had the blackTemplar pretty thin. Might be helpful to comment on the constancy
When I dilute it it's commented and the ratio displayed (shading the metallics), on the rest of applications it's straight out of the pot
JuanHidalgo Miniatures oh, sorry I missed that.
@@the1gofer no problem mate! I'm happy to answer all the questions.
Great job - but I always Wonder why supersoldiers in the far far future use leather pouches on their combat kit..? 🤔

I love it, can u do red scorpions? Its a very fun scheme to paint

I actually have a lot of problems with my apothecary white coming out very grey. Any suggestions on how to fix this issue?
It is grey, what colour are you using as a Basecoat? Also you need to Highlight it with white
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures awesome! I'll give it a try with my next squad of White Scars :)
Can you give any tips if I totally screw up the white highlighting? How do you cover it up?
Now I wish I made a mistake while painting this so I could have shown how to fix it
I really hope it works well for you
