      In NZ the story is Brian killed Dowling with one punch, then Brian felt bad, gave him one pump of CPR and Dowling came straight back to life in the tunnel, then they had a few beers and ciggies at the aftermatch and had a good laugh about it. Probably true, I dunno.

    I remember watching that fight as a kid. Long story short, I ended up working in London with a kiwi who’s last name was Tamati, I jokingly said “you aren’t any relation to the legendary KT?” He said, “yeah that’s my old man.” Got free tickets to the RLWC opening match Eng v Australia at Twickenham as a result. Small world I guess.

    I grew up in North Queensland and knew Greg Dowling, he played for Herbert River in the Foley Shield comp, in the front row with my brother-in-law Murray Groundwater (RIP), the other prop. My wife was an Ingham girl and Murray was married to her sister. I watched the whole of that bout next to the sideline fence at Lang Park and never saw GD land a single punch, which at the time was very disappointing. But I had to hand it to Mr Tamati, he landed plenty. Forgive and forget eh, he seems like a nice enough bloke.

      @@lapalad so playing in the same team as coloured people makes you automatically not racist? Most stupid thing i've ever heard. Dowling doesn't pick the team. Dowling might not be a full time racist.. but for those insults to be your go to when things aren't going well or your angry.. still makes you a racist.
      Australia casual racism culture is effed up. Many aussies have good friends of different nationalities and at the same time will be making racist comments about their race to other white aussies when they aren't around.

    • @oz5565
      @oz5565 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have been called many names on the pitch about my colour and it never bothered me at all. In fact we would often joke about it after the game. Mohammad Ali said many things about his opponents race or colour, do you refer to him as a racist too?

    • @ejsmith9194
      @ejsmith9194 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@oz5565 well good for you, you have thick skin. But that doesn't change the fact that its wrong. Insulting someone based on their colour is what racism is.. not everybody is you. And whether you react or not is irrelevant as its just plain wrong to insult somebody because of their skin white or black.
      And sure Muhammad Ali calling white people names is technically racist. There's a lot of racism that goes both ways and i don't like it. The problem is though, that racism against white people like name calling doesn't really have the same desired effect.. as White people were never treated as being an inferior race. White people weren't made into slaves and racially profiled for centuries due to their skin colour. White people haven't been persecuted and murdered in large masses due to the colour of their skin for centuries either. So when a coloured person calls a white person a racist name due to their skin colour being white.. the white person will think "thats not nice" or "i don't care"..
      When a white person calls a black person a name.. you open a whole bag of worms - that black person will be feeling anger due to his ancestors and family being treated like sh*t due to their skin colour, he'll be thinking that the white person feels superior to him just like the white people in past and society would think they were to his parents and grandparents. And think about all the murders, being treated like your not human and all the slaves that went through the same name calling. That right there is the difference. The white person doesn't have any past with their race being treated horribly in the western world atleadt and treated as inferrior. So racism towards white people is real.. but doesn't have the history behind it to really make a white person feel that rage.
