- Kevin Campion was one of the toughest players to ever play. Kevin sat down with Sporting News Australia to talk through his career as a rugby league journeyman and his infamous fight with ex teammate Shane Webcke

Ran into this man at Currumbin the other day and my son had a photo with him. He took the time to have a conversation with him about footy and asked where he was from, what position he played and gave him words of encouragement. Real gentleman.
That's a great story. Bet your young bloke was pretty happy.
Yep good story. Son would've been stoked🎉
I think Kevin Campion is the most influential player the warriors ever signed because he's still spoken of today and a true tradesman of our game
Hahaha
@M you're actually right there mate.. Europe has been a bunch of soft pansies for decades and by 2050 it seems NZ and Australia will be too.
Very much in the vein of brad thorne
@M And in 50 years Australia will still be shit at soccer
He and Steve Price.
One of the best forwards the Warriors signed up.
@M random comment but ok… cool story bro.
Totally agree. They had some skilful forwards but he was the absolute rock of that team.
@M too many hollywood actors play that game...
@M and yet here you are commenting on a rugby league video . Lol
Totally agree
just a pure rugby league man, no hype or shit just pure footy player, loved watching him ply his trade
Bloody legend bro, thank you for your service to the warriors
The amount of people taking time to show some love speaks volumes of how much this Legend is appreciated on and off the field. I love it!
One of the biggest reasons I started following the warriors. Tough guy on the field, gentleman off it. Thanks for the memories mate! Hope you're happy and well 😎😎
One of the best players to wear the warriors jersey.
@M yet you are here watching and commenting on a video about a Rugby League great.........
@M kaka sport
@M You like soccer, I like league. There is no need to compare sports.
I am a Christian, you may be an atheist, that is your choice. League is my choice
@M you sound like a rabid Islamist....
Fair play to the Aussies, I like what he said at the end - always admire their work life balance - big difference between a dirty player and a hard one, think he was a hard one for sure
Campo we love you in NZ brother! Clipping Webby really solidified you as an honerary Kiwi for life! 👊🇳🇿
Watched you throughout your career Campo ... and just watching this interview and couldn't help. but say that you are a legend mate ... on and off the field.
Gave the Warriors the steel up front, nobody wanted to mess with Campion, coz you knew Monty Betham was somewhere nearby.
Great signing, one of the best the Warriors got, along with Brent Tate & Steve Price
@M sport for men that cant take hits ....
@M Maybe 2550..
@M grow up
@M still here obsessed lunatic. where is your carer?
@M What soccer needs is someone like Kevin to show them how not to like on the ground crying if someone nearly touches them.
One of the true hard men of the game. Thanks so much Kevin. You beast!
Warriors fan here. He made our club so much better. Guys like him made our team tougher.
"We didn't play for the money, it was more for the opportunity back then" something the game has been lacking for the last 10-15 years. These days you play hard for half a season then pen meets the paper and you get to have a holiday for the length of your contract. Great game we love.
True. But couldn't we say that about a lot of sports when it comes to money? Ruins competition.
L take
Milford comes to mind
They would have happily taken large sums of money back then too. It just happened that it wasn't available.
100% agree apart from the 10-15 years bit. big money has ruined all sport for a lot longer than that sadly :(
You were. You ARE... AND ALWAYS WILL BE A LEGEND OF THE GAME... RUGBY LEAGUE. ... Thank you for all you gave to the sport.
I'm not a league follower but always knew the positive attitude and mana he brought to the Warriors, they are really missing someone like him now.
Thanks Champ Campion for being one of the Hartman for The Broncos. You were always appreciated!! Also great to hear you heaping that appreciation to Alfie Langer.
One of the hardest men in nrl history the great Kevin campion what a legend
@M soccer is for the soft ones
@M
What ? Soccer or football as you should call it is garbage mate, I'm English and prefer the Unon game, but these old time league boys are hard as nails, football is for girls in my opinion.
@M ew take that fairy sport away from my sight
@M sounds like you're trying to convince yourself of something. Stop being a pest.
@M obsessed 😂😂😂
Great Warrior Kevin Campion. Fondly remembered for not being afraid to spill blood for the team..
The good old DAYS, they don’t make them like they use to
Great footballer, genuine, humble, hard working, feet on the ground guy
Sucks how many of our heros end up in thankless low pay jobs... doesn't feel right. These are the elite of our game and they deserve so much more...
I know it sucks but he seems content with his life and spending more time with his family and thats the main thing.
He said it suits his life style not yours
He'd be making 6 figures .. settle down
Nrl players are hardly heroes, doctors, surgeons and other medical professionals are heroes, not people that catch a ball.
@@Matt-vr5zk you can't tell someone who there heroes are meant to be... My hero was a guitar player growing up.. subjective experience!
Kevin Campion...absolute legend
Thanks for your massive contribution to the St George Dragons... always reliable and ready to give 100 %..
man the value system of the old players was something different
One of the toughest the game has seen. He use to spill blood weekly for the warriors.
He played with some unbelievable talented players from different eras wow and perform at a great level for so long
Boxed with him and knew he couldn't fight. Haha.
Loved watching him play for the Dragons. We could do with some of that whatever it is he had in the Dragon’s teams now instead of guys whose haircut is more important then their tackling technique!
he was a great asset to the Warriors......I don't know if the Warriors would have done as well without him.
I've done some work with Kevin and he is a genuine good bloke. He bought me lunch 5 minutes after meeting me.
A great player. We watched him on TV from PNG.
These videos are great, I loved the Matt Seers one too.
Living legend and a true winner wherever he went!
I think that was PJ Marsh holding Webke down while Kevin had free shots.
4:09 the old jatz hanging out lol
Knowing that Campo started a cleaning business after he hung up his boots makes me respect him even more.
Thank you for your contribution Mr Campion or should I say champion, cheers mate.
He epitomised the Warriors. A Warrior by name and a Warrior by nature.
He added so much to the Warriors & was always great to watch, such a hard but really damn nice guy
The man, the legend
Excellent snapshot of the great man!
Great punch by the way - look on the bright side, most of the time when you punch an Aussie, it takes five minutes for the effect of the impact to make it to the brain! ….
Oh, …. Hang on!
You ARE an Aussie! 😳🇳🇿💪🏼🤓
I remember this game. Webcke was being an absolute menace and had been involved in a couple of incidents and at that point he was totally dominating the entire game. A scrum was called and campion was meant to set in the second row but he taped the player up front on the shoulder and told him to swap. The scrum set but campion had both arms in, not one over the hookers shoulders. all you saw was Webcke's head bounce up and when the scrum cleared he was standing there with a face full of blood. A very old school way of sorting a rouge opposition player
Great interview Campo
One Tough Warrior💯
I never followed the giants or seagulls but i used to go and watch good players play against Sydney teams pure rugby league back then
Champion we still talk about this guy loved his football
One of NZ's favorite Aussies
TY! Legend!
Iconic name at the warriors. He gave any team that hard edgel. Great mate.
Bloody legend!!
Great vid cheers kev'
You will always be the Hard Knuckled down Warrior in the NZ Warriors jersey Campo
I wonder what He thinks about the modern Game in 2024 🤔 Kevin Campion certainly knew what he was doing on the Footy Field 👍
Hey campo, 5'11 mate the same as me. Your mate daz from Toowoomba. All the best. Great lock forward.
Yes, Kev was the best player the Warriors ever signed and I told him so a few years later while watching footy at Tweed Heads.
Seems like a top bloke. Absolutely one of the best ever Warriors players
awesome kevin..:))
awesome for our warriors..,,great player
poor bloke, that fight still haunts him till this very day.
I remember watching that game live as a kid, I was like holy shit 🤣🤣
I loved when he played for the dragons. Tough as they come and was a underrated ball player 🏉
Great man, always enjoyed watching campo play, no mucking around just got on with the business...poor ol' webby lol, another good player though.
No nonsense workhouse he was, loved his tough no nonsense mentality on the field. Sounds like a good bloke off the field too!
That fight lives on in memory. When men were acting like men.
Good on KC for looking after his family.
One of the best forwards ever, balls galore!
Recruited by a great man, Grant Bell. Belly goes down as the best coach I ever had. Congratulations on your career Kev…
Harndo
Absolute legend 💯
Sarina Crocodiles 🐊💪🏻
A Bloody Legend ✊🏽
I was there at mt smart ( then eriksen stadium) when he fought webke😅
I remember watching the Warriors when Campion was there. Top player and hard as nails
I was at that Broncos game that day. Legendary afternoon. Bring back the biff lol. I'm sure Kev and Shane had a tinnie after the game.
Nothing wrong with being a cleaner mate,💪🏼💯
Kevin Campion was one of my favourite players BUT he was basically king hitting Webke in this trade off because Webke had his arms held behind him by another Warriors player and was basically defenceless. Don't know if Campion realised that in the heat of the moment but he should own it in retrospect.
Humble man! Great player!
An OG hardnut forward of Rugby League💯🙌
U look like Alfy as well mate
Warriors legend! Pretty much a legend wherever he played!
A true Aussie. Need more of them, if we going to win the biggest game of life and save democracy, independence and freedom.
What’s the name of his cleaning business?
Good on ya mate
A good bloke and a real tough nut.
Bloody Legend!
Pure Warrior, the warriors need him around the boys right now
Legend!
Definition of tough. Loved how he played.
Campion and michael luck are probably the 2 hardest aussie signings to join the warriors.
the peak of footy.
'You know the thing about a shark…he's got lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, he doesn't seem be living, until he bites ya'
True honest toiler never shirked the hard stuff on field
Decent bloke.
good on ya mate
Is this guy the inspiration for the kid’s name on Raised By Wolves?
Legend😷🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙
On ya mate!
A journeyman with a boxers nose.
Slip the jab 🥊
He's quite a well-spoken bloke, isn't he?
None of the usual upspeak and weird speech intonations we hear all too often from Aussie sportsmen and women.
Should sign him to the coaching staff
A proper footy player❤️❤️☯️🎏🦦✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽
The millennium rules have chocked the blooding of what used to be a true hard man of league. Campion Can carry the accolade of being one of them.
Old school tough footy player
