    I’m in the exact same boat! Instead of taking it to the third shop I’m gonna do it myself! I have fixed two leaks from watching videos. But now I’m at whether it’s the oil pan or rear main seal and this video it what I’ve been looking for. I did not know about the inspection plate, so I can now look to see if it’s the RMS or the oil pan gasket! Thank you for sharing 🙏🏻 this information is priceless.

    If the seal was pushed out like this it's probably because the PCV valve is messed up and there's too much pressure in the crankcase

    I have been trying to diagnose oil and transmission leaks on my 1999 Accord 2.3L for a year or two. I learned that I had a transmission leak--the fluid got so low that I had a CEL!
    I took it into the nearest transmission shop and the guy just gave me an estimate for a rebuild!
    I keep cleaning my engine and trying to find the source of the leak.
    Then I found out that a single mom that I knew, who had recently been homeless, was looking for a car and a place to live, so I let her drive my car while she figured out housing.
    I couldn't get my car back for 6 weeks, she drove 5,000 miles, and the 2.3L engine was missing 3 quarts of oil and it was missing 3.5 quarts of ATF!
    I resumed cleaning the engine, put dye in the engine and the transmission, and the dye was all over the oil pan, but not above it.
    A mechanic said the oil pan gasket was leaking and wanted $400.
    He said he didn't see any transmission fluid and neither did another mechanic.
    I replaced the oil pan gasket and the first time I drove her there was oil all over the transmission, right where the case halves meet.
    I only cared about the oil leak because I figured that it made it harder to track down the transmission leak.
    I believe I saw some ATF on the catalytic converter, but that was all that I noticed, while the entire underside is oily.
    I took my car to a transmission shop and he didn't see any transmission fluid, either, but pointed out oil behind my valve cover gasket, and then suggested that the rear main seal was leaking!
    I needed to drive out of town for some appointments and my sister has been bothering me to sell her the car for my nephew.
    I cannot find the leaks. Three mechanics didn't help. I have other cars that I need to fix.
    I bought this from our sister-in-law for $250, so I offered to sell it for that price, and she agreed.
    My car had some recalls, though, so I took it in for that, and asked the dealership to find my leaks.
    He didn't notice any ATF, but said there was oil all over the bottom, and there wasn't Hondabond on the corners of the valve cover gasket, so obviously I need to replace that, and they will put Hondabond on the corners.
    There isn't oil below the gasket!

    My 2.3 Accord oil seal problems started with a sudden increase in internal engine psi by blowing out the dip-stick! PVC valve, all upper engine seals, oil pan and gaskets replaced. Now the front and rear crankshaft seals are leaking! All cylinders have 160-180 psi compression. Excessive blow-by is not the issue. Stumped as to what else could possibly cause this sudden high increase in internal engine air pressure? Presently looking at $1,300 est. to replace just the rear seal!

    Some of these silly arm chair technicians don't realize that oil leaks are often not just one specific area. I've worked on Toyotas, Lexus and Hondas and have discovered multiple engine oil leak, to include valve covers, hoses, oil pans and rear engine seals. I've always told vehicle owners to wash the engine from all oil and then placing a large piece of cardboard to determine the location. In addition the use of engine oil dye also helps to narrow down the source of the leak. With high mileage engines, a technician can often start at the top and work their way down to eliminate those leaks. I've had to do this with customers when identifying the engine oil leaks. Often times, customers don't want to pay either and want oil leaks to disappear with a limited budget since removing a transmission to replace a e rear engine seal is not a cheap endeavor.

    Supposedly I have multiple oil leaks coming out the front only transmission in my Honda Accord 2002 LX. It's wet under the car when I was showed it by a mechanic, but I never see anything on the floor when I'm parked. Slowly coming out how? Oil appeared to drained when he checked the amount with stick. What would be the issue here?

    • @JohnSadlersAutoRepair
      @JohnSadlersAutoRepair  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good afternoon, if it's wet underneath and no fluid on the ground we call that seeping and it Is Not a big deal and I would not spend money to fix it.
      When cars get older they will use a little oil between changes due to the engine burning it internally. If it's transmission fluid , when you check it cold it will be at a lower level on the stick. When the transmission fluid warms the level will be higher on the stick.

    • @jgizzy
      @jgizzy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a very common leak on these engines, it is from the spool valve assembly (the whole block that your dipstick attaches to). There are steel plates and a gasket set that can be replaced. IIRC Honda doesn't sell these gaskets separately, BUT they are available online. Search for V6 spool valve gaskets and make sure they fit your year range, the Accord Forums are also a good resource. By the way, this oil leak can and will ruin/kill the alternator!! So get it fixed sooner than later otherwise you'll have bigger problems.

    I literally just had this problem in Pflugerville, Texas. My valve cover gasket needed replaced. I've known that, but I just started getting small oil leaks in my driveway. I take it to the mechanic and say I'm aware of the valve cover gasket needing replaced, but I would like to know what the cause of this other leak is. I want to know if it is a separate issue. They then say they usually work from the top down, and my valve cover gasket needs replaced. So I again reiterated that I'm aware and want to them to see if their are any other leaks. They call back and say that appears to be the only leak. So I have them replace valve cover gasket and when i get home...the same leak is occurring directly under the engine. Highly annoying situation. Thank you for the video though. The search continues.

    • @JohnSadlersAutoRepair
      @JohnSadlersAutoRepair  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Christopher, the seal usually comes out due to its mounted on a thin aluminum plate that bolts to the back of the engine.
      Over about 150,000 miles the seal material wears out and so does the aluminum housing it's pressed into.
      Whenever I replace them I buy the housing and the seal from the dealer.

    I had this same issue when I was diagnosing oil leaks. If you don't have much experience you don't know what your looking for. People don't take their time and make the right diagnosis. I've taken my car to a Honda shop for a warranty coolant leak and they kept telling me they can't find it and that it was the coolant resivoir. I found the leak and dried blue coolant on the driverside lower part of the radiator in 5 mins. It took 5 different techs some varied in experience and age. Just baffles me to know that those shops have people that don't know shit. I had a Ford and took it in for some issues, I didn't have time to diagnose myself, but, they diagnosed it correctly and car ran perfect after that. People always forget to take care of the customer and they will keep on coming back. Not just sell them shit they don't need and find out the problem didn't get fixed. That's why I've maintained all my vehicles well over 100k mark. Good to know that a guy like you can do his job right not just for a paycheck.

      @@JohnSadlersAutoRepair I have a small leak due to a rear seal that is failing. The mechanic has concerns, because he said sometimes the crankshaft has a groove from the seal (often on Hondas). Is there a way to ensure a good seal? I'm not very mechanical. I don't even know what a new housing is.
      The cost of this is about $1650 at my mechanic, and part of me wants to walk away from it, but I also care if my car is leaking onto the ground. It seems like it will only get worse.

    • @JohnSadlersAutoRepair
      @JohnSadlersAutoRepair  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If your leak is small, couple of spots on the ground and don't have to add oil between services, I would not worry to much about it for now. Depending on the mileage sometimes you can put a little heavier weight oil also.
      The leak may stay like that for along time.
      Waiting is not a bad thing.
